ERNEST HEMINGWAY
1930. PLEASE SEE FULL DESCRIPTION BELOW. HEMINGWAY, ERNEST. Original Typed Carbon Manuscript for an Early Draft of The Mother of a Queen by Ernest Hemingway. N.p.: n.d. (early 1930s). Original Typed Carbon Manuscript for an early draft of the short story 'The Mother of a Queen' by Ernest Hemingway. Quarto. 4 pages in total comprised of 1, 2, 3, and 5 - lacking page 4. Near fine condition with some minor age-toning and handling. The typescript contains a few corrections by typewriter or pen and it differs from the final printed version chiefly in changes of words and names of characters and some restructuring of sentences. The John F. Kennedy Library in Boston has a partial holograph manuscript for this story in their collection, and the ribbon copy of this typescript, as well as the missing page four of this carbon. The manuscript came from Telly Otto Bruce (known as Toby to his intimates), a Hemingway family retainer, Ernest Hemingway's companion and close friend, driver, and handyman. Bruce obtained this manuscript (along with others) from Mary Hemingway when she was sorting out Ernest's papers in Key West, FL. With Certificate of Authenticity. Hemingway's method of composition was apparently to write or type his first drafts and then either type revised drafts himself or get anyone he could to type them. The Mother of the Queen was published by Scribner's in 1933 in Hemingway's third and final collection of fourteen short stories Winner Take Nothing. The story centers on the life of a bullfighter who is referred to as a 'queen' and the narrator, who is both the bullfight … [Click Below for Full Description]

Zemenkov, B.
1930. Udarnoe iskusstvo okon satiry [i.e. Striking Art of Satirical Windows]. Moscow: Khudozhestvennoe izdatel'skoe aktsionernoe obshchestvo AKhR, 1930. 104 pp.: ill. 18x13 cm. In original constructivist wrappers. Slightly bumped and chipped, signature on half-title, otherwise very good and clean copy. First and only edition. One of 5000 copies. Cover design by unknown artist features photomontage compositions of ROSTA 'Windows' with geometrical figures and lettering. A book caught a turning point when ROSTA Windows (1918- 1922) were re-evaluated by the public. After seven years of silence and almost oblivion, critics started to discuss these agitational posters again, the articles on them appeared in the press and exhibitions were held in state galleries. An author, constructivist artist Boris Zemenkov deeply appreciated their informational content, methods of widespread propaganda and a different approach to each work. The author considered them not posters but rather newspapers. He wrote: "Some of them so relevant that I don't understand why they are at museums instead of being on streets". Zemenkov divided the work into chapters 'Participation in the Civil War', 'At Struggle for Production', 'At Struggle for Province', 'To a New Way of Life', overviewing how these common topics were embodied by artists. The book includes reproductions of posters of M. Cheremnykh, V. Mayakovsky, V. Lebedev, I. Malyutin, A. Niurenberg and others. Worldcat locates copies in Princeton, Yale, Drew Universities and Harvard College.

1930. Mrs. Godfrey traveled alone on this world cruise commanded by W.A. Morehouse that sailed from New York, December 15, 1930 and returned to port on April 28, 1931 (some 29,500 miles traveled). The Itinerary included Cuba, the Panama Canal, Hawaii, Japan, China, Philippine Islands, Siam, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Egypt, Greece, Italy, the Riviera, and Gibraltar. Mrs. Godfrey must have been of some means, taking the four-month cruise in the early days of the Great Depression. On leaving San Francisco on January 4, she writes, “I am feeling beautifully luxurious—facing the prospect of new countries + people all around the world.” VG+ in a faux leather Smith & Thomson (6.25” x 9”) binding (a few abrasions), with metal fastener holding three-ring binder pages. 228 pp. (approximately 8 have come loose, some out of order). The pages contain the printed log of the journey by day, with information on each location visited, as well as information on shore excursions, programs, and tender service with blank space for passengers to record their reflections and observations. In the log book, Mrs. Godfrey details onboard activities and on the ground excursions, tracking her movements around the world. She lays in and sometimes attaches various bits of ephemera from her journeys including a few photographs, excursion group passes, sightseeing program cards, an invoice from a Nikko, Japan curio dealer who sold Godfrey “1 old blue embroidered Kimono 120 years old,” postcards and clippings, and a few letters to her husband (one that speaks of the ship in Hong Kong “ran into a fishing … [Click Below for Full Description]

Winston S. Churchill
My Early Life Winston S. Churchill London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1930 First edition, first impression Condition: Good This is the first edition, first printing, first state of Churchill's autobiography. My Early Life sold very well at the time and has seen a great many editions since, many of them collectible in their own right, but of course a premium attaches to first editions. The challenge for collectors is that the plum colored binding of this edition proved especially susceptible to fading, soiling, and wear; nearly all copies are considerably spine faded. Moreover, the contents proved quite susceptible to spotting. This copy is in good condition, sound, complete, and unrestored but with flaws and wear endemic to the edition. Moreover, this copy is an uncommon variant. Two states of the first edition, first printing are identified, with a list of either 11 or 12 Churchill titles in the boxed list of "Works by the same Author" on the half-title verso. With 11 titles on the half title verso, this copy is definitively first state. Complicating matters further, there were a number of first edition binding states, bound in either a coarse or a smooth plum colored cloth, with the title stamped on the front cover in either three or five lines. The five lines on the front cover of this copy denote the identified second binding state, but this copy is unusual in featuring first state contents, five lines on the front cover, and smooth binding cloth rather than coarse. The plum cloth binding of this copy is square and tight, but with significant spine sunning, some stai … [Click Below for Full Description]

Asakusa Teikokukan (Cinema Theatre)
[Tokyo]: Asakusa Teikokukan, circa 1930-1934. Small octavos (15 × 11 cm). Original pictorial and photo-illustrated wrappers; between 6 and 14 pp. per issue. Contents illustrated in black and white with numerous film stills and photographs; wrappers (rectos and versos) in color. All but nine issues with the weekly schedule of screenings cut-out, affecting upper half of one page per issue. Rear wrapper detached to no. 195; otherwise very good. A visually striking and well-preserved ephemeral source of information on domestic cinema in interwar Japan, and an appealing example of the vibrant modernism of Japanese graphic design. The wrappers incorporate both selections from film stills and advertisements in interesting photo-montage designs, usually printed in two colors, often on variously colored stock. With additional designs to the insides of wrappers, as well as black-and-white photographs, film descriptions, and weekly programming within. These weekly film programs (which range from issues 87 to 284 - inquire for a list of issues), were issued by the Teikokukan cinema chain, which first emerged in Tokyo's Asakusa neighborhood and later spread to other districts and cities. As of August 2019, we cannot trace any copies in either KVK or OCLC.

This set includes the complete works of the iconic crime fiction author, including of course the four novels and over fifty short stories about Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, as well as all his non-Sherlock works such as his plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. A number of the books show some discoloration to the tan cloth. Vol. III: Several ¼" spots of soiling (slight discoloration) to cloth spine. Vol. IV: Two ¼" spots of soiling (slight discoloration) to cloth spine. "Documents was a Surrealist art magazine edited by Georges Bataille. Published in Paris between April 1929 and January 1931, it ran for 15 issues, each of which contained a wide range of original writing and photographs. It was overseen by the writer-philosopher Georges Bataille, who became more and more its single guiding figure as the issues progressed. Primarily through the pages of this journal, Bataille forcefully challenged the tenets of Surrealism espoused by André Breton in favor of an alternate model, in which humanity could embrace the formless, the sordid, the discarded and disregarded." Carr, John Dickson
Harper & Brothers, London, 1930. In red cloth-covered boards with black titles. States to copyright page "First Published 1930 / Fourth Impression." Address of Harper & Brothers to title page given as "Ninety Great Russell Street / London WC." (British edition.) NO Harper's date code. Book bears no price. (Price may have been printed to missing blue band.) The "good" unsophisticated original jacket, which has not been repaired or restored (which is what "unsophisticated" means, of course) shows inch-and-a-half tears to top corners of front panel, mostly closed but with slight loss. There was originally a blue promotional obi, or band, which is NOT present, though both jacket flaps show two-inch double vertical slits through which said band was originally held in place. The apricot-colored publisher's seal, tipped in at page 209 and then glued to Rear Free Endpaper, has been torn open to allow the final 111 pp. to be read, as usual. However, while it was roughly torn, this seal remains almost entirely present, sufficient that it could probably be re-secured, if there were any conceivable reason to do so. (Please see scan.) The section of the seal remaining before page 209 reads "A Sporting Offer / The killer has walked again! Sufficient clues are in your hands for you to have guessed the criminal. Yet so skilfully" (the British spelling) "has this mystery been constructed that we offer you your money back if you can stop here without breaking the seal. . . ." (etc.) "A Harper Sealed Mystery (Patent Applied For)" This is the first published detective novel by Carr (who also w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rotterdam, Delftsevaart - Herman Paradies, ca. 1930
[Click Below for Full Description]

California Surfriders - (Privately Published in a Limited Edition of Which This Book is #337) by John Heath "Doc" Ball (Not Signed) Estate sale find, this work is a classic among serious surf memorabilia collectors and is extremely difficult to find in any condition. Limited to approximately 510 copies, it is unknown how many have survived over the years. Considered a masterpiece of the time, California Surfriders, showed sturdy men and women enjoying a nearly pristine California coast from La Jolla to Santa Barbara, and on up to Santa Cruz and Pacifica: beach parties, hardly any traffic along the Pacific Coast Highway along expanses that were still open and undeveloped. Doc Ball was tremendously influential in the growth of surfing in California, especially between the 1930's and 1950's. Doc was instrumental, along with Adie Bayer, in organizing and leading surfing's first great surf club, the Palos Verdes Surfing Club (PVSC), a group whose leg … [Click Below for Full Description]

'These Cantos . represent the best in Pound's "poem of some length" . There are more lyrics and fewer chunks of prose than in the later, not so many economic propositions and ideograms, and some beautiful passages on the Homeric world and renaissance Italy.
