HALSTED, William Stewart (1852-1922] MACCALLUM, William George (1874-1944).
Johns Hopkins Press, 1930., Baltimore. 8vo. xvii, [1], 241, [1] pp. Frontis. portrait, 17 illus., fold-out family-tree diagram. Blue blind- and gilt-stamped cloth. Inscription: "To Jack Gibbon in appreciation of our interesting experiences in 'experimental surgery' 1930-1931. E.D.C." Very good. First edition. INSCRIBED BY EDWARD DELOS CHURCHILL TO JOHN HEYSHAM GIBBON, INVENTOR OF THE HEART-LUNG MACHINE. The unique inscription in this copy of MacCallum's biography of Halsted, may well refer to a watershed moment in cardiac surgery, that led to the development of technology and techniques that saved, over the past sixty years, millions, of lives. Gibbon was a research fellow working under Edward Delos Churchill in 1930-1931, and together they performed numerous experimental surgeries aimed at increasing survival rates for open heart surgery patients (Hurst, Conti, and Fye, Profiles in Cardiology, 2003). A review of Churchill's archival papers, at the Harvard University Library, show six correspondences with Gibbon, and in two of them Churchill refers to Gibbon as "Jack". PROVENANCE: Edward Delos Churchill (1895-1972) was a noted thoracic surgeon. John Heysham Gibbon, Jr. (1903-1973) is best known for inventing the heart-lung machine and pioneering many techniques in open heart surgery. Gibbon's impetus for devising the heart-lung machine stemmed from an emergency surgery he performed with Churchill at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1930. "In 1930 he found himself assisting Dr. Edward Churchill in an emergency pulmonary embolectomy. At that time the procedure was one of des … [Click Below for Full Description]

FORD, Henry.
Garden City, New York: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1930. Garden City, New York: Doubleday, Doran & Company,, 1930. In collaboration with Samuel Crowther. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine and front board lettered and decorated in gilt, top edge stained yellow, others untrimmed. With the pictorial dust jacket. Spine ends and corners slightly rubbed and bruised, else a bright, clean copy in the tanned dust jacket, a few splits to joints and extremities chipped with some minor loss - in all well preserved, as the jacket is genuinely hard to find in anything close to a fine state. First edition, first printing, of Ford's fullest statement of his world view, his "glorification of the machine", and a major influence on Huxley's masterpiece, A Brave New World, published just two years later. "In 1930, Henry Ford and his ghost writer, Samuel Crowther, published Moving Forward, their third collaboration, and surely many people turned immediately to it for the advice its title seemed to promise on how to deal with the economic challenges suddenly thrust upon them … It is very much a glorification of the machine … Ford's love for the machine is clearly evident - the very point that antagonised Huxley in 1926. Ford's cultural hero is the engineer. His praise of engineers near the end of his book could, without difficulty, be given to Mustapha Mond or the Hatchery Director" (p. 105).

FISHER, Irving.
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1930. New York: The Macmillan Company,, 1930. As determined by impatience to spend income and opportunity to invest it. Octavo. Original dark blue fine-ribbed cloth, spine lettered in gilt with single gilt rules at ends, front cover blocked in blind. With 3 folding tables. An ex-library copy in excellent condition; shelfmark to lower spine sometime removed, San Francisco College for Women Library stamp and accession number to the title leaf verso and matching card pouch pasted to rear pastedown; additionally with the bookplate of Monsignor Joseph M. Gleason (1869-1942), Californian priest, historian, and book collector, to the front pastedown. Else the contents clean, the cloth notably bright and unmarked, and with some minor bruising to spine ends and one small closed tear at gutter of half-title. First edition of Fisher's Theory of Interest, a revised version of his earlier book The Rate of Interest (1907). Dedicated to John Rae and Böhm-Bawerk, it is a further development of their ideas: "its greatness as a book lies wholly in its outstanding pedagogic qualities... [which] amounted to the demonstration that the real rate of interest is determined by both demand and supply, by the demand for production and consumption loans on the one hand and the supply of savings on the other" (Blaug, Great Economists before Keynes, p. 79).

RISTIC (Marko) [dir.].
1930. THIS BOOK IS IN PRETTY GOOD CONDITION CONSIDERING IT IS OVER 90 YEARS OLD. THIS BOOK IS OVER 90 YEARS NOW. IT WAS SOME WRITING ON THE INSIDE COVER AS SHOWN. IT ALSO HAS SOME MINOR DAMAGE TO THE OUTSIDE PAGES WITH A FEW TEARS AS SHOWN.OVERALL, IT'S IN PRETTY GOOD SHAPE AND WILL MAKE AN EXCELLENT ADDITION TO A DISCERNING COLLECTOR. I TOOK IT TO SEVERAL ANTIQUARIAN BOOKSTORES WHO GAVE ME A PRETTY ACCURATE PRICE AS TO WHAT I COULD GET FOR IT. IF I PUT IT ON CONSIGNMENT WITH THEM, IT COULD TAKE A WHILE TO SELL IT, SO THEY TOLD ME MY BEST BET IS EBAY. IT WILL BE EXPOSED TO A NATIONAL AUDIENCE OF ELECTRICIANS. THESE ARE THE GUYS WHO WOULD BE INTERESTED IN THIS. IN ANY EVENT, I AM PUTTING IT UP FOR $575 AND WILL NOT GO DOWN. IF IT DID NOT HAVE THESE MINOR PROBLEMS, IT WOULD BE WORTH DOUBLE WHAT I PUT IT UP FOR. THIS IS THE LOWEST PRICE THEY TOLD ME IT WAS WORTH, SO THAT'S WHAT I'M GOING TO INSIST ON. THIS BOOK IN PARTICULAR IS VERY RARE AND YOU WON'T FIND TOO MANY COPIES ON THE INTERNET. SO PLEASE NO LOW BALLERS OR OFFERS. I JUST WON'T RESPOND. IF YOU DO BUY IT , IT WILL BE PACKAGED CAREFULLY SO IT CAN'T GET DAMAGED. IT WILL GO OUT INSURED AND WITH SIGNATURE REQUIRED. SO IF YOU COLLECT THESE BOOKS AND NEED THIS ONE TO FILL IN YOUR COLLECTION, HERE'S YOUR CHANCE. ANOTHER MAY NOT COME UP FOR SALE FOR A DECADE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

Bruxelles, Société Auxiliaire des Expositions du Palais des Beaux-Arts, Imprimerie Wellens, Godenne et Cie, s.d. [1930]. 102 x 69 cm. Affiche imprimée en noir sur papier crème. Affiche originale. POST, Emily
New York: Funk and Wagnalls, 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good +. Large octavo, 521pp., illustrated. A very nice, square copy, near fine, but for some light, small pencil markings in a few margins - all erasable with some patience. Deep blue topstain. In the exceedingly scarce dust jacket, very good or better, with a few shallow chips and a thumb-sized piece missing at the top of the rear panel (not approaching any content). A profusely-illustrated follow-up to Post's hit, "Etiquette," we had real trouble finding any copies of this volume in its original dust jacket - in any condition - and very few copies of the first edition, even without its jacket. Note that there is a bizarre appearance between pages 160 and 161 of what looks like the remnant of a torn-out leaf. However, all of the called-for illustrations are present, and there is no text leaf missing there. This is likely the result of a poorly trimmed gathering, which was folded and bound in without having been fixed.

[RADICAL & PROLETARIAN LITERATURE] ENGDAHL, J. Louis and Sasha Small, et al. (editors)
New York: International Labor Defense, 1930-1937. Paperback. This fragile and uncommon publication, issued from 1926 to 1937, is perhaps one of the most underappreciated of American radical magazines of the period. In addition to its bold photo-montage covers and pictorial style, the Labor Defender featured some of the finest radical writing of the time and was notable for its direct engagement with contemporary events. Headed by The Daily Worker editor, J. Louis Engdahl, with contributions by Ernst Toller, Louis Colman, Grace Hutchins, Myra Page, Lucy Parsons, V.I. Lenin, Angelo Herndon, Bruce Minton, Joseph North, Anna Damon, Theodore Dreiser, Joseph Brodsky, Granville Hicks, William L. Patterson, Jorge Paz, and William Z. Foster, et al. v76. Fourteen quarto issues (30.5-32.75cm); photo-illustrated wrappers, stapled; variously paged; illus. Modest wear to extremities, with all but two issues bearing rubber-stamps to wrappers from the Bancroft Library (duplicates from the Tom Mooney papers); occasional tears, creases, and small losses; a few wrappers detached and split along spine-folds; Nov.1937 issue with large loss to lower left corner of rear wrapper; complete; Good to Very Good+ group.

Nückel, Otto
New York: Farrar & Rinehart, Inc, 1930. Square octavo [20 cm] in red cloth with titles and cover illustration in black. Light chipping and edgewear to darkened, lightly foxed jacket; small dampstain to spine at top, a few small white smudges to boards; rear hinge starting; interior is clean and crisp. Nückel's classic story, told entirely through a collection of striking images, inspired the work of Lynd Ward. From the publisher: "This pitiless story of a girl of the lower classes is curt, bare and powerful. The baseness of the underworld milieu is drawn with unsparing line; but the tale is lifted out of the merely lurid by the honesty of the artist's feelings, by his mastery of his medium. It reaches pure tragedy.". Very good in very good jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

1930. Gouache and watercolour heightened with gum-arabic on very dark green card, annotated in pale ink with body type below, numbered '83', in upper left corner, German copyright stamp on verso, 27 x 42 cm (10½ x 16½ in). Finished in light brown, with dark brown hood and wings, with matching solid disc wheels, picked out against a silhouetted trees, this deceptively large 2-door roadster was one of many variant designs around the underpinnings of Maybach's awesome V-12 engine and running gear, introduced in 1929. It was actually achieved by marrying two 6-cylinder units at a 60 degree angle. The company was founded in 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach and his son Karl, as Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau GmbH, producing engines for the burgeoning airplane and airship industries, including for the famous Zeppelin. It was rebranded Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH in 1912, as the scope of application widened to include rail locomotives, and by 1919 they experimenting with their own motorcars. From 1921 to WWII, the name Maybach became synonymous with powerful and luxurious motoring, its engine and chassis designs readily lending themselves to the creative imaginations of such coachbuilders as Kellner. Founded by Alexis Kellner (1880-1953) in 1910, in Berlin, the eponymous Alexis Kellner AG coachbuilding company's stylish automobile bodywork designs were immediately successful. This was demonstrated by the number of orders he received at the International Motor Show, in Berlin, in 1911. Kellner was noted for his inventiveness of small details, such as a concealed handle behind the driver's seat for quic … [Click Below for Full Description]

Evarts, Kentucky, 1930. 3/2/2017. Very Good. A small archive of 13 sepia-toned photographs measuring 5" x 7", with captions on the verso. All photos are very good with slight creasing and edgewear. A collection of photos from Evarts, Kentucky in the 1930s documenting the coal mining town with landscape scenes and photos of townspeople likely taken as part of a WPA (Work Projects Administration) assignment. A wonderful photo of two boys swimming is captioned, "boys risk a swim in spite of tin cans, broken bottles, and typhoid out back of our house." Another photo shows a teenage girl posed on a rock in a stream holding two buckets and smiling for the camera. Other photos include a miner's cabin with laundry drying on a porch, a candid photo of women and children on the stoop of a school, and men standing on a railroad track. A compelling collection of photos depicting rural Kentucky during the 1930s when the coal industry kept the town afloat during The Great Depression.

1930. Gouache and watercolour heightened with gum-arabic on very dark green card, annotated in pale ink with body type below, numbered '77', in upper left corner, German copyright label on verso, 27 x 42 cm (10½ x 16½ in). Finished in dark green with contrasting grey roof and matching solid disc wheels, presented against a silhouetted rural landscape with windmill, this imposing 4-door cabriolet was powered by Cadillac's famous V8 engine. Founded in 1902 from the remnants of Henry Ford's first manufacturing venture, the company was rebranded as Cadillac after the founder of the city of Detroit at the beginning of the 18th century, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. The firm was acquired by General Motors as early as 1909, to be their flagship brand, as by which time it had already made its mark as a maker of luxurious and technically innovative cars. The V8 engine was first introduced in 1915. The longer chassis of the 341-A of 1928 allowed for a sleeker, lower-slung, body that suited such a sporty design treatment by such creative coachbuilders as Kellner.
