John Dickson Carr
Harper & Brothers, New York and London, 1930. 1st printing of the 1st American and therefore true 1st edition in original jacket with 'New York preceding London as publisher's location at foot of title page and 'First Edition A-E' stated at copyright page - in publisher's original dark blue cloth with titles in light blue to front board and spine - all still fesh, clean and bright with very minor bumping at spine ends and minor rubbing/bumping at corners. Valier, Max
R. Oldenbourg, München & Berlin, 1930. Sixth edition, second printing (2. Auflage zugleich 6. Auflage von VORSTOSS IN DEN WELTENRAUM, EINE TECHNISCHE MÖGLICHKEIT). From the library of Frederick I. Ordway, with two of his distinctive bookplates. Originally published in 1924 as VORSTOSS IN DEN WELTRAUM, a revised and enlarged version (the fifth) was published under the title Raketenfahrt in 1928. This sixth edition, the second to be issued under the title "Raketenfahrt," was published in 1930. Originally in wrappers, this copy has been rebound in grey cloth [both the fifth and the sixth editions were issued in cloth and in wrappers -- Curry]. Valier was co-founder of the German Verein für Raumschiffahrt, along with rocketry pioneers Johannes Winkler and Willy Ley. Valier was killed in 1930, the year of publication of this edition, when a rocket engine he was testing exploded. Ordway co-wrote two seminal histories of early rocket science, Space Travel: A History and The Rocket Team. The grey cloth boards are clean, gilt spine text bright; some spine lean, otherwise binding tight and sound; narrow binder's slip tipped in at title page. The bookplates are neatly attached to both the front paste down of the hardcover binding, and the inside of the original wrapper. Interior pages are clean and unmarked. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A colored steel print image done by N C Wyeth next to the title page of the book of Johan Printz, the Governor of New Sweden. The book is in pretty good shape. Some rub to the finish at the corners of the covers. A similar map inside the front and back covers of the territory talked about in the book. Richard Aldington
Henri Babou and Jack Kahane, 1930. Henri Babou and Jack Kahane. First unexpurgated edition published by Henri Babou and Jack Kahane in 1930. 1 of only 300 numbered copies. This copy is in near fine condition. The original paper wrappers are very clean and free from marks. Volume 2 has a tan mark across the top of the front panel. There are a couple of gentle creases along the spines of both. Without the original glassine wrappers but in the original publisher's matching marbled paper chemise and slipcase. The slipcase has minor wear to the edges and corner tips. The pages are very clean and both volumes look unread. Some pages still uncut. Overall a near fine set and rare to find in this condition. The unexpurgated edition is the authoritative text of Aldington's bitter World War I novel, restoring the amendments made to the previously published British and American trade editions, which were both sanitised owing to obscenity laws, although the American text was less so than the British. Death of a Hero is the story of a young English artist named George Winterbourne who enlists in the army at the beginning of World War I. The book is narrated by an unnamed first-person narrator who claims to have known and served with the main character. Aldington, a veteran of World War I, claimed that his novel was accurate in terms of speech and style. It contained extensive colloquial speech, including profanity, discussion of sexuality and graphic descriptions of the war and of trench life. There was extensive censorship in England and many war novels had been banned or burned as … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gorinevskii, Prof. V. V.
Moscow-Leningrad: Molodaia gvardiia, 1930. Octavo (17 × 12.3 cm). Original typographically formatted printed wrappers; 136, [8] pp. Very good. A guidebook for guides of the Russian Pioneer movement, in charge of the physical and athletic development of children and young adults. While acknowledging biological differences between the two sexes, the book stresses the importance of upbringing and the family environment for creating further unnecessary division between boys and girls. The author provides information on the anatomy and muscular development of children, sport and games as an educational factor, and introduces a broad range of movements and games, including summer and winter games, sports, and activities meant to be done by both girls and boys. The final chapter also touches on the ongoing struggle against outdated notions of hygiene and sanitation, which further hinder the proper physical development of children. The book also mentions the factor of childhood sexuality and the effect of unhealthy gender dynamics and violence at home on playful interactions between boys and girls. It is striking how overtly many of these physical exercises are linked with the future ability of children to carry out various kinds of physical labor. Also included is a short bibliography (in addition to many works cited in the footnotes throughout). As of May 2020, not traced in KVK, OCLC. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

A meticulous researcher who visited battlefields and interviewed participants from both sides in the Peloponnesian War, Thucydides (ca. 460 - ca. 395 B.C.), the greatest of all Greek historians, was himself an Athenian general who fought in the conflict's first phases. Influenced by the medical writers of his day, he diagnoses with clinical detachment the ills of a corrupt society under the pressures of war and epidemic. He was also a great dramatist, and the tragic defeat in the harbor of Syracuse that signals the fall of Athens is written with a skill that equals the greatest Greek tragedians … [Click Below for Full Description]

Richard Aldington
There was extensive censorship in England and many war novels had been banned or burned as a result. When Aldington first published his novel, he redacted a n … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chesterton. No. 1 OF 30 SPECIAL COPIES SIGNED BY CHESTERTON AND YUNGE (from an edition of 240). Original bright red buckram, smooth spine with gilt lettering, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in a slightly worn grey cardboard slipcase. With 10 full-page black and white illustrations by John Yunge-Bateman, and with AN ADDITIONAL SUITE OF THE 10 PLATES PRINTED ON JAPANESE VELLUM AND SIGNED BY THE ARTIST, housed in a gray envelope and laid inside. With an old invoice and letter laid in, dated 1978, indicating that this item belonged to the publisher and was purchased by the bookseller from his estate. Top edges slightly bumped, a hint of offsetting from the plates, but in extremely fine condition. This is an attractive printing of one of the greatest tragedies in the English language, with striking black & white illustrations highly reminiscent of the work of Harry Clarke and Aubrey Beardsley. Little has been written about our artist John Yunge-Bateman (1897-1971), though we know from Cave & Mason that he was championed by Christopher Sanford of the Golden Cockerel Press, who "found [his] drawings 'enticingly lush'" and commissioned the artist to illustrate two works for the press: the "Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam" (1958) and "Metamorphoses" (1959). In the present work, Yunge-Bateman--who signed his work simply "Yunge"--draws heavily from Japanese prints and the work of e … [Click Below for Full Description]

No. 5 OF 100 COPIES SIGNED by the author and illustrator. Publishers black roan over green paper boards, gilt design on upper cover, smooth spine with gilt titling. Illustrated throughout with amusing caricatures by Thomas Derrick. Free endleaves with a couple of tape marks and a bit of browning where something was once tipped in. Taylor & Sewell A-191; not in Ransom. Corners and tail of spine lightly bumped, mild offsetting from illustrations, otherwise a fine copy--clean, fresh, and bright inside and out.Written by a famous Catholic convert and printed at a Catholic private press, this is a strictly limited edition of a modern mummers' play, with the traditional characters of St. George the Crusader, the infidel knight, the doctor, and Father Christmas set among the crumbling Ottoman Empire in the years following World War I. Though best known today for his Father Brown mysteries, G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936) was a leading intellectual light in turn-of-the-century England, delighting in public disputes with George Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells, and Bertrand Russell. He was an influential literary and art critic, and a prolific essayist. One of the subjects he examined in his writing was the mumming (or mummers') play, a traditional English folk entertainment featuring the crusader St. George in a story of death and resurrection: the saint battles an infidel warrior, one of them is slain, but … [Click Below for Full Description]

No place of publication.: 教育資料出版社.[Kyoiku Shiryo Shuppansha]., (circa1930?). No place of publication.: 教育資料出版社.[Kyoiku Shiryo Shuppansha].. (circa1930?).. Four very striking Japanese education posters in colour, the posters showing either a Japanese male or a female student in their black school uniform demonstrating the correct position for sitting or standing. Two creases (15cm and 6.8cm in length respectively) from left margin on the poster of the seated boy, two repaired closed tears from lower margin (16cm and 3cm) on poster showing the seated girl, a small area of insect damage upper corner one poster and some general light wear but overall still very good copies of a scarce set of posters. Text in Japanese. Sheet measures 77.8 x 53.4cm These four posters are designed to hang on the wall in the classrooms to teach students how sit and stand properly. The male student is dressed in Japanese school uniform with black jacket with brass buttons and a pair of shorts with knee-high stockings. The female student is dressed in black jacket with sailor-style collar and a skirt. These uniform styles (particularly the sailor-suit style for girls) started being in general use in Japanese schools in the 1930s, suggesting that the posters date from this decade. Correct posture was considered a crucial element in school physical education, as it was considered important both for physical health and for conveying proper respect to teachers and others. The posters show the children standing with hands pressed straight against their sides, in the position which is also used when bow … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pen ownership inscriptions of one Dorothy Logan to front joint and dated 1945 to front free endpaper, profuse annotations. Slight rubbing to spine ends, the binding otherwise firm and unfaded, light liquor stains to bottom margin of pp. 47-54, else untoned and fresh. A very good copy in the very good jacket, light wear to corners and edges, small tape residue to front panel, else notably bright. First edition, first printing of this book, uncommon in the jacket, of cocktail recipes from the exclusive London club, Ciro's. It opened on Orange Street as a private club in 1915, and was renowned as one of the first London venues to host an all-black band. This very attractive little book features an early appearance of the Pegu Club cocktail, as well as the contested White Lady - the creation of which is claimed by two Harrys: Harry Craddock of The Savoy, and Harry MacElhone (later of Harry's New York Bar fame) during his stint at Ciro's in London in 1919. The precise identity of the bartender "Jimmy" remains unknown, though it is very possible that he is Jimmy Charters, bartender of the Dingo Bar in Paris and Ciro's in Monte Carlo. All the recipes are easily replicated without special equipment, so that (somewhat questionably) "even a child of five may … [Click Below for Full Description]
