        A Treatise On Money

London: Macmillan and Co, Limited,, 1930. 2 volumes, octavo. Original dark green cloth, spines lettered in gilt, double line rules in gilt to spines continued in blind to front boards. Numerous tables and diagrams to the text. Ownership inscription to front free endpaper and the occasional pencil annotation to volume 2. Extremities gently rubbed, spines rolled and ends bumped, endpapers of volume 2 lightly foxed, overall a very good set. First edition, first impression. A Treatise on Money is the first of Keynes's two major contributions to economic theory and his most comprehensive work on monetary theory. It anticipates many of the ideas of the General Theory, which it immediately preceded and by which it has been, perhaps unfairly, overshadowed.

Mots clés : MANUFACTURE DE SEVRES, DESSIN ENCRE, art déco Mots clés : angelots, amours, aquarelles, Art-déco, faïence, [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF 94 ORIGINAL, SEPIATONE IMAGES TAKEN BY TRAVELLERS TO THE BRITISH COLONY OF RHODESIA [NOW ZIMBABWE] WITH A SOJOURN TO SOUTH AFRICA IN THE 1930S

1930s. In an album made by Newlyn of London, comprising blue cloth over heavy boards and leaves of gray boards with photo-windows, are 94 photographs measuring 3.25" x 4" that feature the Zulu tradition, Victoria Falls, etc. Album, 9.5" x 6" with "Photographs" and a gilt emblem on the cover. In the self-governing colony of Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), the point of this voyage was two-fold: to interact with some of Africa's Bantu people, and to observe the rush of Victoria Falls as first sighted by David Livingstone in 1855. Following a pleasant sea voyage with all of the comforts and entertainments expected of a British cruise company, this party of travelers visited the grave of Cecil Rhodes, which lies among the rock formations of the Matopos, and also the Shangani Patrol Memorial erected to commemorate Major Wilson's Last Stand during the first Matabele War in 1893. Zulu people are seen near the front of the album in a small town, and later the men are photographed on the banks of the Zambezi River in a long canoe, while the women fill clay water jugs to carry on their heads for many miles. Victoria Falls, with its immense gorges and raging waters, appear in no fewer than a dozen photographs. Lake Victoria is photographed, along with Victorial Falls Bridge, built in 1905. Our travelers attend and photograph a sport-related celebration where the British flag is prominent, and where African men perform a traditional dance with a large group of musicians playing hand-crafted, three-foot-wide wooden xylophones. A flavorful photo album. Very Good.

The Ajanta Caves in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state of India are about 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments which date from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 or 650 CE. The caves include paintings and rock cut sculptures described as among the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art, particularly expressive painting that present emotion through gesture, pose and form. . According to UNESCO, these are masterpieces of Buddhist religious art that influenced Indian art that followed. The caves were built in two phases, the first group starting around the 2nd century BC, while the second group of caves built around 400-650 AD according to older accounts, or all in a brief period of 460 to 480 according to Walter M. Spink. The site is a protected monument in the care of the Archaeological Survey of India, and since 1983, the Ajanta Caves have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. . The Ajanta Caves constitute ancient monasteries and worship halls of different Buddhist traditions carved into a 250 feet wall of rock. The caves also present paintings depicting the past lives and rebirths of the Buddha, pictorial tales from Aryasura's Jatakamala, as well as rock-cut sculptures of Buddhist deities in vogue between the 2nd century BCE and 5th century CE. . Textual records suggest that these caves served as a monsoon retreat for monks, as well as a resting site for merchants and pilgrims in ancient India. While vivid colours and mural wall painting were abundant in Indian history as evidenced by historical records, Caves 16, 17, 1 and 2 of Ajanta form the largest corpus of surviving ancient Indian wall-painting. . Panoramic view of Ajanta Caves from the nearby hill . Ajanta is famous for its ancient Buddhist paintings. The Ajanta Caves site are mentioned in the memoirs of several medieval era Chinese Buddhist travelers to India and by a Mughal era official of Akbar era in early 17th century. They were covered by jungle until accidentally "discovered" and brought to the Western attention in 1819 by a colonial British officer on a tiger hunting party. The Ajanta caves are located on the side of a rocky cliff that is on the north side of a U-shaped gorge on the small river Waghur, in the Deccan plateau. .         Novye poety Frantsii v perevodakh Iv. Tkhorzhevskogo [Recent French poets in translation by Iv. Tkhorzhevskii]

Knizhn. Delo, Paris 1930 - Large octavo (24 × 18.5 cm). Original blue decorative wrappers by Boris Grosser; 193, [2] pp. Signed and inscribed by the author to a fellow translator on the front flyleaf (Sablina). Wrappers lightly worn, edges rubbed; some fading and loss of spine strip at ends; internally very good. A monumental collection of French poetry in Russian translation, featuring the work of over seventy French poets of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, prepared and with a preface by Ivan I. Tkhorzhevskii, Russian emigre poet and translator. Among the many poets included are Verlaine, Rimbaud, Maeterlinck, Claudel, Gide, Proust, Apollinaire, Jean Cocteau, Paul Valery, and Valery Larbaud. Tkhorzhevsky's translations were far from universally appreciated. The poet Vladislav Khodasevich was reputed to have quipped about his translation of the Rubaiyat: "I had a terrible nightmare. I dreamed that I was a Person poet and that Tkhorzhevsky was translating me" (Karlinsky 315). And Vladimir Nabokov, in a letter to Gleb Struve, ridiculed Tchorzhevsky's translation of Rimbaud's "The Drunken Boat" for his unwarranted additions (such as a captain of the Russian intelligentsia). Wrappers designed by Boris N. Grosser (1889-1982), a French Jewish artist of Russian birth who illustrated numerous books published by Russian emigres with his distinctive woodcut designs. After studying with Bilibin, Grosser continued his training in Munich and Paris. After 1918, he lived in Odessa and in 1920 he emigrated, settling in Paris after 1921. He collaborated with numerous publishing houses in Paris, Berlin, and Holland, illustrating the works of Ivan Bunin, Vladimir Nabokov and many others. Grosser remains an understudied part of Russian book design and illustration abroad. One of 500 copies printed. Not in Savine; not at the Russian State or National Library. Three volumes in publisher's acetate jackets, lacking the aluminum slipcase. Presentation copy signed by Rockwell Kent on the front free end paper of Volume I, "Inscribed with affectionate friendship to Putzie - Rockwell Kent, 1950." Volumes II and III bear Rockwell Kent-illustrated bookplates of Marie Luise Hinrichs. Very Good+. Narrow strips of sunning to spine cloth at ends, light rubbing to cloth at extremities and light abrasions to black topstains. Pages toned and with offsetting from illustrations. Acetate wrappers are wrinkled and shrunken with age, as is typical, and show a bit of chipping and edge wear, with some separation starting between the acetate and a paper flap on both volumes II and III; acetate on volume II with light staining. A stunning presentation copy, inscribed by Kent, and with bookplates designed by him as well. John Schulman writes in the ABAA blog The New Antiquarian that this edition "is the crowning achievement of the Lakeside Press and also one of the triumphs of Machine Age book design and illustration in America. [Rockwell] Kent’s affinity for the sea and knowledge of sea-faring gave his illustrations even more power and accuracy." It also helped to propel Moby Dick from semi-obscurity into its current fame as perhaps the quintessential American novel.

This is Paul Robeson, Jr.'s copy with his bold ownership Signature on the front fly (obviously written at a later date). It also has the smaller ownership signature of Rev. Benjamin C. Robeson (Paul Robeson, Sr.'s brother). In addition, the subject of the book, Paul Robeson, Sr., has noted on the rear fly: "April 25, 1956. Have translated = The Soviet Biography - John. Soldier of Peace." An exact timeline of ownership is impossible to determine, but we suggest this was one of Paul Robeson, Sr.'s own copies, was then given to his brother, and was later inherited by the dedicatee, to whom his mother probably did not see fit to inscribe a copy while he was still in diapers. Portions of the jacket (text from the flaps) affixed to the front endpapers, binding modestly smudged and soiled, a near very good copy lacking the dustwrapper. The author's exceptionally uncommon fourth book, and considered the finest of her "Ohio" novels.         [Manuscript Fair Copy, Signed, of "Curfew Must Not Ring To-night," with Related Letter]

San Diego, CA, 1930. Six pages, in ink, on rectos of six quarto lettersheets. Mailing folds, a few tiny nicks and light soiling; very good. The complete text, signed and dated at the conclusion, of Thorpe's famous narrative poem, the opening stanza of which reads: "England's sun was slowly setting o'er the hill-tops far away, [/] Filling all the land with beauty at the close of one sad day; [/] And its last rays kissed the forehead of a man and maiden fair, -- [/] He with steps so slow and weary; she with sunny floating hair [/] He with bowed head, sad and thoughtful; she [with] lips so cold and white, [/] Struggled to keep back the murmur, [/] 'Curfew must not ring tonight' ...." Accompanied by a typed letter, signed, from Thorpe, to Rev. Cornelius Greenway of Brooklyn, NY., one page, small quarto, 3357 Fourth St., San Diego, CA, 10 September 1930, with the original mailing envelopes for both. In her letter, Thorpe writes: "If the poem you desire an autograph copy of was a short one I would gladly comply ... In 1886 Edward W. Bok, editor ... sent me a request for an autograph copy of my famous curfew poem with an accompanying check of ten dollars ... I accordingly placed a price of five dollars a copy for this wearisome task which consumed so much of my time and strength necessarily needed for my literary work which was my only means of support. From that time I have received the above remuneration for this service (the only remuneration for the curfew poem, which, in the first place, I gave to the public) ...." Thorpe (1850 - 1939) wrote her most famous poem when she was a teenager, and she neglected to copyright the text. It was widely anthologized and translated, and became a favorite 19th century declamation piece. It was first printed in newspaper form in 1870, then for the first time was collected in book form in 1874, in Baker's THE READING CLUB AND HANDY SPEAKER, and then, in 1883, as a book bearing the poem's title.
