[Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Bookplate in Australia. Its Inspiration and Development

Tyrrell's Galleries, Sydney 1930 - Octavo, 30 pages with 10 tipped-in bookplates. Quarter cloth and papered boards, with the printed paper label on the front cover; all edges uncut; a fine copy with the original textured glassine dustwrapper (now with minor restoration). The colophon, signed by Barnett, states that the book is 'Reprinted from the 1929 Year Book of the American Society of Bookplate Collectors and Designers'. In fact, the original printing was unillustrated. In the Book Collectors' Society of Australia 2009 publication on Barnett, the bibliography by Mark Ferson lists this item as Barnett's first separate publication on the bookplate. However, Ferson does not record a separately-paginated reprint of the ASBCD article, an inscribed and signed copy of which we have handled, which presumably predates this Tyrrell edition. Ferson notes a signed and numbered edition limited to 50 copies, as well as this unlimited edition, but does not record that there are two issues of the latter. The superior form is as described here; the standard form is in wrappers, unsigned. This copy comes from the collection of Edward Edgar Pescott (1872-1954), horticulturalist, naturalist, author and book-collector; his wattle-design bookplate is tipped in on the half-title. The page facing it is inscribed [by R.H. Croll] to 'E.E. Pescott with the good wishes of the friends gathered to wish him and Mrs Pescott bon voyage. Melbourne 9th March 1939'. The bookplate of the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria is tipped in on the same page. Tipped in on the front flyleaf is the 'Mutual Store' menu for the farewell dinner, signed by 17 guests, including Pescott, Croll, Charles Barrett, Crosbie Morrison, and Charles French. An autograph letter signed by Barnett, relating to the occasion, is also tipped in. Please use the 'Ask Bookseller a Question' link below to confirm availability and postage charges.         "A Machine-Oriented Logic Based on the Resolution Principle"

First publication of the resolution principle, the standard of logical deduction in AI applications. The basic computational method in logic programming, the unification algorithm, was proposed by mathematician Jacques Herbrand in 1930, but its first practical use was not discovered until Robinson introduced it in this paper as the basic operation of his resolution principle. "Robinson described his resolution principle as 'machine-oriented' in that it was particularly suitable for proofs to be performed by computer, having only one rule of inference that could be applied many times. Robinson's resolution has since been used as the standard of logical deduction in AI applications" (Hook & Norman, Origins of Cyberspace 865). "Born in Halifax, England, and having served in the RAF, [Robinson] attended Cambridge University, where he read classics. He received his master's degree in philosophy from the University of Oregon and his doctorate in philosophy from Princeton University in 1956. His interests thereafter focused on computers and logic. In 1963, as a visitor from Rice University in Texas to the Argonne National Laboratories, he became interested in automated reasoning, and in 1963 invented Resolution and Unification. In 1967 he became the Distinguished University Professor at Syracuse University and later Visiting Professor at Edinburgh University in Scotland." (New York Times obituary). Bibliography: Hook & Norman, Origins of Cyberspace 865. [in] Journal of the Association for Computing Machinery, volume 12, number 1, pages 23-41. Baltimore, MD: The Association for Computing Machinery, 1965. Quarto. Original cream wrappers printed in black. Remnants of a mailing label to the upper wrapper. Just a little rubbed and creased.         [Photo Album]: African-American Family Photo Album

, 1930-1978. 1930-1978. Quarto. Red decorated boards with 3 steel rings, measuring 7" x 12". A collection of 83 photographs, both in color and black and white housed in a 3 ring binder photo album, without captions. Good only lacking the front boards with worn edges and tiny tears. The album, which was possibly assembled for the funeral of Mrs. Dorothy Gay of Lutcher, Louisiana in 1971 and continued after, as the church program is affixed to the rear board, assembles photos of an African-American family from what appears to be the 1930s until the 1970s. Some of the notable early photos include one from July of 1941 of a man in a tuxedo carrying a drum set, three from 1944 of some dapper gentlemen posing in front of a grand staircase, and one undated photo of a man in a nice looking car. The later pictures depict women in fancy fur coats, a 1978 graduation ceremony, and a little girl posing and singing. .

New York. March 26, 1930. - [2]pp. on a single octavo sheet of stationery. Old fold lines, minor wear. Near fine. Noted art collector and Winslow Homer patron Thomas B. Clarke writes to Mr. [Mantle] Fielding on artistic business matters, discussing the current values of American art, etc. In part: ".Mr. Cochran (of J.P. Morgan & Co. has given several more American paintings to Andover Academy, among them 'Eight Bells' by Winslow Homer. In the 'Nineties' Homer asked me to come to his studio.on Washington Square. I went there and he said 'Clarke here is a picture that I have just finished working on, and I have named it 'Eightbells.' I said 'Mr. Homer will you sell it to me?' He replied 'Yes, and I will accept $400 from you.' In 1899. it fetched over $4000. Levy sold 'Eight Bells' later to one of his clients. This buyer 'parted with it' very recently for the Andover collection for the sum of seventy thousand dollars! Some commentators upon this sale say that this price was low! The rapid advances of certain works of art by American painters seems very remarkable to me. My inclination for the selection of oil portraits from life was manifest in the sale of my collection, and at the end of the sale I started to accumulate the paintings now hanging in the Museum in Fairmount Park Phila. and in my residence here (there are 171 in all - I feel like hiding!). . You and I have known of marvellous increases in the values of portraits of Washington by Stuart, Peale and others. Copley, Trumbull, Sully et al also lead in the great advances. In coming years will portraits by these men mount in value? I feel such a situation is absolutely certain." Thomas Benedict Clarke (1848-1931), American patron and art collector, is considered by many to be the foremost patron of American painters during the late 1800s. He was praised for his attention to American artists at a time when they considered themselves neglected or ignored. Mantle Fielding is remembered today for his works on portraits of Washington.

        Studies in Secret Service Intelligence.

Seems to be not published, but an offset of a typescript. 1930 - J.A. Kavanagh, Studies in Secret Service Intelligence. 1930 “Crime, like more reputable industries, has its recognized leaders—every branch of crime has its men and women who are known to be their guiding principles." This seems to be an offset copy of a not-quite-finished book project for an instructional on how to operate as a private detective. This DIY comes a few years after Continental Op and Same Spade, though it still seems to be in the early period when private eyes were becoming accessible to the public at large. I can find NO copies of this work in WorldCat/OCLC and neither hide nor hair in other references. I'm not sure that it was ever published. __+__ There are 34 divisions of approximately 336 leaves (each page printed on one side only, each including a covering "contents" page and a concluding "question" page, the contents page not included in the page count. CONDITION: text is FINE; the outer manila folder wraps are in pieces.         Poems Edited with notes by Robert Bridges. Second edition with an Appendix of Additional Poems, and a Critical Introduction by Charles Williams.

London: Humphrey Milford, 1930 - Octavo. Original blue cloth boards, titles to spine and front cover gilt, top edge trimmed, others untrimmed. With the plain paper dust jacket. Small white mark to bottom edge of boards, light offsetting to endpapers, occasional leaves uncut; a very good copy in the uncommon jacket, price-clipped, spine browned, faint foxing to covers and small nicks to extremities. With 2 facsimile signatures in the text. Second, and enlarged, edition, first impression. Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–1889) published very few poems in his lifetime and destroyed many of his early writings in a crisis of faith - he had been received into the Roman Catholic faith by Cardinal Newman himself in 1866, and in 1868 made a bonfire of his juvenilia. It was only decades after his death that, collected and largely designed by Hopkins's friend and admirer Robert Bridges, the first edition of this "sensitive, handsome, and almost complete" collection was published (ODNB). Contemporary reviews were mixed though some were stridently positive, such as Theodore Maynard: "A shy mid-Victorian priest, writing while Tennyson, Swinburne and Patmore led their various schools, was more modern than the most freakish modern would dare to be. He is the last word in technical development." Sales were slow and it had only just sold out by 1930, when this "second edition was called for by the poetry public who were demanding new, difficult poetic voices. Advocated especially by I. A. Richards, F. R. Leavis, William Empson, and Michael Roberts, so that his poems appeared in general and modernistic anthologies, followed by university and school syllabuses, Hopkins had suddenly become a popular modern poet". Uncommon in the jacket, with only two copies traced at auction. Dunne A38.

        THE WORKS

Oxford: Shakespeare Head Press, 1930-31. No. 302 OF 450 COPIES on paper (and 10 on vellum) n. This is the major modern fine press edition of Homer, with illustrations by one of the most popular woodcut artists of the period. The text here is Chapman's Homer, which Day calls "the greatest verse translation of the Renaissance" and perhaps "the greatest English translation of Homer." George Chapman (1559/60-1634) made his name as a poet and playwright before turning to translating classical literature. His was the first English translation of Homer to be done directly from the Greek, and it remained the standard translation until Pope's 18th century version. Chapman enjoyed a renewed popularity among 19th century poets: Keats composed a much-quoted sonnet, "On First Looking into Chapman's Homer," which begins "Much have I travell'd in the realms of gold"; and Swinburne said, "No praise can be too warm or high for the power, the freshness, the indefatigable strength and inextinguishable fire which animate this exalted work." Wood engraver, painter, illustrator, writer, and teacher John Farleigh (1900-65) had a style perfectly suited to an edition of Homer. In "A History of British Wood Engraving," Albert Garrett writes that "in terms of modern engraving, John Farleigh understood the purity of Greek engraving and largely formed his style upon the few known examples. Like the Greek engraver, he also understood the human form and could express it." He was one of the major engravers of the new British School, which focused on broadening the medium's range of expression and techniques.. 292 x 203 mm. (11 1/2 x 8"). Five volumes. Translated by George Chapman. No. 302 OF 450 COPIES on paper (and 10 on vellum). Publisher's original burnt-orange half morocco over cream-colored buckram, edges untrimmed. In a later paper-covered slipcase. With 52 wood engravings by John Farleigh, comprised of two frontispieces, woodcut-framed title pages to volumes I and V, and 48 full-page cuts. With ink ownership inscription of Daisy Patterson Hall on limitations pages. Ransom, p. 17; Franklin, p. 236; Horne, p. 185. Overall fading and significant chafing to spines, minor dressing residue to leather, faint dampstain covering about a third of the back cover of volume V (a few tiny stray stains on the spine of the same volume), but the bindings showing little wear, and the sides of the other volumes (often found foxed) virtually spotless and very pleasing. Internally a beautiful copy, as fresh and clean as one could hope for.       Collage. ca. 41 x 48,5 cm. Gerahmt.
