        The Works. The Crowborough Edition.

New York: Doubleday, Doran & Co., 1930 - 24 volumes, octavo (215 × 146 mm). Contemporary blue half morocco, blue cloth sides, titles and decoration to spine gilt with raised bands, gilt rules to boards, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Small bookplate to the verso of front free endpapers at the top, pages nice and clean, some minor restoration to a couple of headcaps, an excellent set. Photogravure frontispiece portrait with tissue guard by Pirie MacDonald to Volume I. First complete collected edition, number 324 of 760 sets signed by the author in volume I, of which 750 were for sale and ten for presentation. The Crowborough edition—named after the Sussex town where Doyle's home, Windlesham, was located—has double the number of volumes of the Author's Edition of 1903. Doyle had already signed sheets for it but his illness and death on 7 July 1930 prevented him seeing final publication of the work, and so it belongs to that select category, the posthumous signed limited edition. The introductions are reprinted from the Author's Edition, and the text is set from the existing editions without any corrections. Green & Gibson A61.

Cakes and Ale or the Skeleton in the Cupboard

London: Heinemann, 1930. First edition, first state with won instead of won't in line 14 of page 147. 270 pp. 1 vols. 12mo. Original publisher's blue cloth. Bookplate, in near fine dust jacket with two internal tape repairs. First edition, first state with won instead of won't in line 14 of page 147. 270 pp. 1 vols. 12mo. After Of Human Bondage, Cakes and Ale is probably Maugham's finest novel, and certainly one of his most popular. Of it, Maugham wrote: "The book I like best is Cakes and Ale. It was an amusing book to write". Notes the author's biographer: "His [output] had its ups and downs. Cakes and Ale was one of the ups. He went on writing for another thirty years but never matched it in style or structure. It was a pity that the scandal surrounding the models for the main characters drew the attention of the literary community away from the book's real merit." Today, of course, it is those models who provide the fun: Driffield, the Grand Old Man of Letters (Thomas Hardy), and the writer-on-the-make Alroy Kear, a highly unflattering portrait of the novelist Hugh Walpole, who never forgave Maugham for writing his most malicious--but also his funniest--book. THE ABOVE IS THE END TO THE MESTER PERSONAL COPY NOTES . . BELOW CONTINUES WITH A DESCRIPTION OF OTHER COPIES . . THE DESCRIPTIONS ARE FOR VARIOUS EDITIONS OF THIS TITLE . . CONTENTS & SUBJECT REMAINS IDENTICAL FOR ALL COPIES . *** EARLY ANATOMY: This is the first Japanese treatise to give an exposition on the whole system of human anatomy, based on original observation, including dissection. During the Edo period[160-1868] the opening of dead bodies was forbidden by the Shogunate and by Buddhist law. This text is the first record of anatomical dissection in Japan based on an actual observation. . *** MAGNIFICIENT COLOR WOODBLOCK ILLUSTRATIONS: . The is a famous, magnificent color-illustrated work showing the various parts of human anatomy. . Mestler stated: "These drawings were well executed, and illustrate the following structures: thoracic and abdominal viscera, in-situ the lungs, with a careful dissection of the bronchial tree; the heart, the diaphragm, spleen, stomach, liver, gall bladder, kidneys with their blood supply and the urethras, the urogenitial system, in male & female, with the plexus of veins draining testes and ovaries, uterus with fallopian tubes and ovaries, urinary bladder in the male with testes and accessory organs of reproduction [seminal vesicles, prostate], and penis, the small & large intestines, with the vermiform appendix, the supply to the intestine through the mesentery; pancreas, pancreas, a schematic diagram of the lymphatic, general vascular system of the entire body, the system of spinal nerves the gross appearance of the brain." GALAXY p.319. . * ILLUSTRATIONS: This set contains 14 double-page color, 8 color single page illustrations, 1 double b.w. and 1 single page illustration. Illustrated in GALAXY, p.317, plate iv, C. . *** WHO WAS AUTHOR: MITANI Shoshu [1774-1823]: He was also known by alternate first or "Go" [studio names]: Boku or Koki. He was a Rangaku Sha [student of Dutch learning], a scholar and physician from Omi province. He depicted and described anatomical findings based on his primary observation and dissection performed in 1802. He also studied anatomy books and records of autopsies in Japan. GALAXY, pp.316-318. . . * The last volume is an appendix. This work was written by Mitani's pupil MINAMOTO Konsei. Mestler states: "This work was of sufficient historical importance to be entirely reprinted [1930] in a facsimile." GALAXY p.318. . This was a most valuable and important work, the first to be illustrated in color. It was an avant-garde work of the period, relied upon by physicians & medical students. . *** An inserted advertisement for the work read "This book is KAITAI HATSUMO, based on some new Dutch theories and dissections of real dead bodies to confirm accuracy." . *** THE FIRST EDITION OF 1813: This edition was bound in crushed mica dust impregnated covers, an unusual and costly technique. This dust was combined with a sort of "gesso"-like material and glue, then spread finely over the paper covers in a spider-like web pattern, then block printed over that in white...a lovely effect. Size: 19 x 26.5 cm. . *** CONDITION OF THE FIRST EDITION: The covers show the usual scuffing, corner wear and are otherwise solid. Some title labels are chipped, top 2 cm. of volume 4's label gone, else complete. There is a bit of old worming here and there, most of which was restored on the verso. Most of the worming was in the margins, a few others in the text. There was some old worming to vol. 1, which by and large has been restored. The work it is now firm and stable. . Volume 1: stain to covers, worming to upper and lower margins, mostly restored. . Volume 2: covers mostly clean, a bit of minor worming to upper margin, text not affected. . Volume 3: covers mostly clean, some old worming in leading margin first two-thirds. . Volume 4: small stain in upper right corner does not affect text, small hole in a few pages at the top margin, text unaffected. . Volume 5: Covers mostly clean, small stain on front & rear covers, small stain in lower right corner of margin, text unaffected. . CONDITION NOTE: We tend to be a bit over critical in observing and reporting defects. Often the books are in better condition than we describe. The set is by and large a nice copy given it is over 200 years old. . *** THE REPRINT EDITION OF 1930: This reprinted edition is replete with many color illustrations. It was made to look and feel like an early 19th century wood-block printed book, this work is true to the traditional format of paper, binding and color printing. It is 17.5 x 25 cm. A superb copy, in its original indigo blue Chitsu [folding cloth case] with bone clasps. A lovely example ! . *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: .         Moby Dick, or The Whale (First Trade with Dust Jacket)

New York: Random House, 1930. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. Kent, Rockwell. 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. 823 p. First trade edition of Moby Dick illustrated by Rockwell Kent; the Lakeside Press published a limited edition in three volumes with 280 illustrations; this trade edition is in a smaller format and uses 272 of the illustrations. Rockwell Kent was already well-known and his appeal has continued to grow throughout the 20th century; his work is widely collected today. Interestingly, while Melville wrote Moby Dick in 1851, it was almost neglected until Kent elected to illustrate the story; his illustrated version had tremendous success and revived the novel for the 20th century. ***DESCRIPTION: Black cloth boards with silver letting on front and spine, both the front and spine also display Kent's own design of a whale, with the head on the front and the tail on the spine, cream endpapers, prior owner bookplate laid in (it was tipped onto the front pastedown, one can just see very light browning from the adhesive) for Francis White, bookplate designed by John McGrath (1880s to 1940s), vintage bookseller's ticket on the rear pastedown from Wayfarer's Bookshop, Washington D.C; there is also a vintage price in pencil at the top of the rear free endpaper of $3.50. Volume is replete with Kent's black-and-white pen/brush and ink drawings which made him justly so famous. The dust jacket mirrors the design on the front panel and on the spine, in black with cobalt blue highlights, and while it displays Kent's name on both front and spine, it does not display Melville's. 12 mo size (approximately 7" tall), 822 pages plus a one-page Epilogue. ***CONDITION: Volume is overall fine, the silver gilt on the front and spine bright and unrubbed, with a square, strong text block and solid hinges, straight corners without rubbing, other than the bookplate mentioned above it is free of prior owner markings; professional restoration was done to repair a very small tear to the binding at the front joint near the head of the spine; slight dustiness to the text block edges, else fine. The unclipped (although also unpriced) dust jacket is good only, with overall edgewear, several small chips, the front panel has a small triangular spot where the top layer of paper rubbed away, just affecting the top of the letter "y" in "Moby", the back panel has several creases; there is also some sunning to the spine - the jacket is entirely present and the illustration on the front is bright, but it's overall a bit rough. ***CITATION: Rockwellkentiana, pg. 62. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Greenwich Village: Types, Tenements & Temples

Self-Published, New York 1930 - Paper-covered thick cardboard covers with a thin and deteriorating cloth spine. Front cover upper right has an etching which represents the title of the book. No printing along spine. Four preliminary sheets, each an etching, followed by 22 signed etchings, and finishing up with an unsigned etching as the endsheet. The Limitation page (etched) has written in ink that this is copy 25 of a total of 26. A laid-in typed sheet (dated Lime Rock, Ct. in 1937) states that the original intent was to print 50 copies of this, the third state of the book. However, it goes on to say the zinc plates began to deteriorate and the edition was halted at 26. Each inside cover has a plate embedded into it. The front cover has an architectural scene, and the rear cover has a dancing scene. All 22 of the artist image etchings is signed. Weber, p. 31: "An interesting pictorial presentation of 'the Montmartre of America,' an area in Manhattan long frequented by authors, artists, and students." The limitation leaf describes Greenwich Village thus: "A hodge-podge of tumble-down tenements, rickety architectural relics, with a great deal of modernity just minced together. Mushroom tea taverns & dancing dens have found lodgement in the attics & cellars." One of the most charming and spirited of Wall's productions. Internally VG, covers are weakly attached and spine cloth getting weaker due to weight of covers with embedded zinc etching plates (one in each) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Photo Album]: Civilian Conservation Corps Camp F-2, Company 701

Isabella, Minnesota, 1930. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 101/2" x 131/2". String-tied full leather album. Contains 295 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 13/4" x 23/4" to 61/2" x 41/2" with some captions. Album and contents fine.A comprehensive Civilian Conservation Corps album showing the men of Minnesota's first camp. The men were assigned to Superior National Forest where they worked on fire prevention, conserved marshland, built buildings, conducted surveys, and more. The company was created with 10 men on April 5, 1933, the same day that FDR signed the executive order establishing the CCC. When it was first formed, it had several African-American members, though none are pictured in this album. The album contains a fair amount of group shots, both in and out of uniform, as well as several interior views showing the barracks, the mess hall, including one where it's decorated for Christmas, and one of the fireplace with FDR's portrait hanging above. Other images show the hospital including an interesting picture of a man holding a sign which reads "QUARANTINE SCARLET FEVER". Quarantines were the only way a camp could deal with contagious disease and these signs were also at camp entrances to alert visitors to the situation. Many pictures show the snow-covered roads and grounds and buildings, some in the midst of construction; others show the men being loaded into, and loading equipment into, trucks, digging, posing with equipment and raising the flag. The album shines in its documentation of leisure activities with a concentration on hunting and fishing. We see men feeding a bear, snowshoeing (and possibly racing in snowshoes), canoeing and swimming, dangling dangerously over rapids and visiting a tobacco shop. Others show them hunting, with many images of strung fish and varmints, posing with special catches, and one of a man apparently ice fishing with a rifle.A wonderful album, artfully created, fully documenting the work and play of Minnesota's first CCC camp.

[Photographie originale signée] : Intérieur du bar automatique "Presto", place de la Bourse à Paris (architecte : Otto Bauer), vers 1930

Paris: Lecram studio photo, 1930. Photo. Illus. by André Vigneau. Très bon. Aucune reliure. Signé par l'illustrateur. 0.
