Original drawings transspheroidal / pituitary tumor removal

1930 - [Bruno Keilitz and Oscar Hirsch] 12 fine pen and ink images by the prolific anatomical/medical illustrator Bruno Keilitz (b. 1898) showing the stages of the removal of a pituitary tumor. The illustrations seem to have been for an article written by Dr. Prof. Oscar Hirsch (1877-1965), who was an early and influential Viennese rhinologist who made major contributions to pituitary surgery, performing this transspheroidal procedure for Harvey Cushing in 1911, and who would go on to perform the procedure more than 500 times in his long career.(Note 1)__+__Of the 12 drawings, 9 are very closely related and show the progress and route of a transsphenoidal surgery for the removal of a pituitary tumor. I feel pretty confident that these drawings were done in 1930 (see below). These images are labeled I-VIII (including a “Ia”). These images measure about 6x8.5 inches each, drawn on a heavy stock, and done in colors. Each of these images is drawn from the same perspective and show different aspects of the surgery in progression. These drawings I-VIII are all rubbers tamped on the back with Bruno Kelitz's name and address; two of this series are signed by Kelitz in the drawing, both of which are dated 1930. There are also some other notations in ink on the reverse that I can't quite place, as well as some later dates, as the images seem to have been used on more than one occasion. __+__One drawing in this series has an old American Medical Association label (seemingly stamped Feb 11, 1952), identifying the publication of origin ("Arch. Otol" Archives of Otolyrngology), the author ("Hirsch"), and the type of reproduction to be used when illustrating the article. The last of this series is signed and dated (1930) by Kleitiz. The 10th drawing is similar to the preceding nine, though is smaller and is without color, and shows the interior radium application of the tumor. Measurement: 4.5 x 6 inches. The 11th drawing shows six different types of tumors, I think, and is rendered in black and white. Measurement: 4.5 x 6 inches. 10 of the images have their original wax paper protective covering; one has a plastic cover and the last has no cover at all. All are in fine condition. The 9-drawing series are all quite bright and fine.__+__ Notes: 1. Transsphenoidal Surgery: Complication Avoidance and Management Techniques, edited by Edward R. Laws, Jr, Aaron A. Cohen-Gadol, Theodore H. Schwartz, Jason P. Sheeha, pg 16. ".Harvey Cushing and Oskar Hirsch, two prominent pituitary surgeons who pioneered the transsphenoidal technique. Cushing championed the sublabial approach, whereas Hirsch was the master of the endonasal route."--“Harvey Cushing and Oskar Hirsch: early forefathers of modern transsphenoidal surgery” James K. LIU, M.D., et alia, Journal of Neurosurgery December 2005 / Vol. 103 / No. 6 / Pages 1096-1104__+__ Other Notes: Bruno Keilitz: "The remaining numerous text illustrations are all from the academic painter Mr. Bruno Keilitz, done with the greatest accuracy and beauty, which we acknowledge gratefully here . "from The Cytoarchitectonics Of The Adult Human Cortex by Professor Constantin Baron von Economo”--Database of Scientific Illustrators, University of Stuttgart__+__ Oscar Hirsch: (A) "The evolution of pituitary surgery over the past century dates back to the work of Oscar Hirsch and Harvey Cushing in the early 1900s. Hirsch's dedication to the transsphenoidal technique as the most effective method to approach the sella ran contrary to his contemporary's opinion. Cushing, with large series' of cases using both transcranial and.transsphenoidal approaches to the sella, would ultimately choose the former as the more efficacious procedure. Citing its distinct advantage in providing a direct and gross exposure of the gland, Cushing helped establishwidespread employment of the transcranial method throughout Europe by the 1930s."

        A Roving Commission

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1930. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a the U.S. first edition, first printing of Churchill's extremely popular autobiography, covering the years from his birth in 1874 to his first few years in Parliament. This is a very good copy in the scarce first printing dust jacket. Published in England as My Early Life, this is one of the few Churchill first editions for which the U.S. edition bears a different title than the British. Interestingly, A Roving Commission was the title proposed by Churchill himself and favored by his American publisher. One can hardly ask for more adventurous content. These were momentous and formative years for Churchill, including his time as a war correspondent and cavalry officer in theatres as varied as Cuba, northwest India, and sub-Saharan and southern Africa. This time contained a wide range of experiences in Churchill's life. Not only was he developing as an author, publishing his first books, and making his first lecture tour of North America, but this was also the time of his capture and daring escape during the Boer War, which made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. Churchill would take his seat in Parliament only weeks after the end of Queen Victoria's reign. A Roving Commission remains one of the most popular and widely read of all Churchill's books. And for good reason, as the work certainly ranks among the most charming and accessible of his many books. An original 1930 review likened it to a "beaker of Champagne." That effervescent charm endures; a more recent writer called it "a racy, humorous, self-deprecating classic of autobiography." To be sure, Churchill takes some liberties with facts and perhaps unduly lightens or over-simplifies certain events, but this is eminently forgivable and in keeping with the wit, pace, and engaging style that characterizes the book. The book sold very well at the time and has seen a great many editions since, many of them collectible in their own right, but of course a premium attaches to first editions, both British and U.S. Jacketed copies of the U.S. first edition are scarce. Even decent unjacketed copies are unusual. The red-orange cloth binding proved highly susceptible to fading and soiling and the fragile dust jacket proved highly vulnerable to wear and severe fading of the orange color, particularly on the jacket spine. This first printing copy (confirmed by the Scribner's “A” on the copyright page) features a square and tight binding with sharp corners, bright gilt, only light wear to extremities and, most notably, a bright, unfaded spine with only trivial sunning to the spine ends corresponding to minor dust jacket losses. The contents are clean with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. Some residue and scarring on the front pastedown indicates removal of a bookplate and there is a two-inch cosmetic split to the paper at the inner front hinge that affects neither the mull beneath nor overall binding integrity. The first printing dust jacket has a neatly price-clipped front flap, loss to the spine ends to a maximum depth of .375 inch, and a 1.5 x .5 triangular loss at the upper front face. The spine ends and upper front face loss are reinforced on the jacket verso. As with most surviving jacketed copies, the spine is significantly faded, though the title, author, and publisher print remains clear. The dust jacket is protected beneath a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A91.2.a, Woods/ICS A37(b.1), Langworth p. 134.

        The Savoy Cocktail Book

Constable & Company, Ltd, London 1930 - 12 mo - over 6.75" to 7.75" tall, 292 pps. A cultural icon and the foundation for all great modern bartending books. Harry Craddock (1876-1963), British by birth, had emigrated to the US in 1897 but moved back to Britain with the advent of prohibition, landing a job at the American Bar at the Savoy Hotel, London, in 1920. His bartending guide, a collection of 750 recipes (several of which he is credited for creating) was published in 1930 and remains in print today. This copy is a first printing, with the date on the title page and before the publishers inserted the errata slip modifying the "Bacardi Special Cocktail" on page 25 to simply "Bacardi Cocktail". We believe the UK edition was published prior to the US, as there is an advertisement for the book dated November 23, 1930 in the London Observer while the ealiest mention found in the US is a review in the Hartford Courant dated December 7, 1930. This copy with an inserted ad spread for Booth's Gin ("Welcomed by the Gallants of 1740") as a tipped in sheet between the half-title and title pages. ***DESCRIPTION: Decorated paper boards with an Art Deco design, black cloth spine, pictorial endpapers, 2-page ad spread for Booth's Gin tipped into the book between the half-title and the title pages, 1930 date on the title page, decorations and illustrations throughout by Gilbert Rumbold (as late as the 1950s, he was living in Broadstairs, continuing to sketch drawings of local scenes that were sold in gift shops around the town, despite having lost an arm in a train accident); duodecimo size (just under 7.5" tall), pagination: half-title page with Aldrich quote on verso (1-2), inserted ad spread (i-iv), title page (3) through 286 includes three pages with only blank lines at the end, page 287 a vignette of a haughty woman peering through a lorgnette off to the side, followed by the printer's statement (printed by Lowe & Brydone, London), (288). ***CONDITION: We are rating as good plus due to overall wear to the binding; there is some light rubbing to the front board, general fairly minor edgewear, wear to the head and tail of the spine including light loss of the cloth, there is a bend in the spine running vertically down the center, and the gilt lettering on the spine has rubbed off; both hinges are tender although the endpapers have not cracked, and there is some offsetting to the endpapers from the inks on the pages opposite. The interior pages are clean and bright, we see no prior owner markings of any kind, there is perhaps a hint of toning to the pages, the interior is near fine. ***POSTAGE: International customers note that additional postage may apply, please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Lawrence was a painter, designer, printmaker and teacher. She attended the Slade School of Art from 1910-14, where she was a prizewinning student. She went on the spend a period of time in St. Ives and returned to the Slade in 1916 where she studied under the Canadian born artist Percyval Tudor Hart and also began exhibiting at the Royal Academy and New English Art Club. In 1917 she took up a teaching position at Runston Hill School and in 1920 she met Claude Flight, the founder of the Grosvenor School of Modern Art. In 1925 she moved into Claude Flight's studio and the two shared an exhibition of textiles and linocuts at the Redfern Gallery in 1926. In 1927 they set up an interior decorating business trying out different methods of linocut, wallpaper, wall hangings and textiles. Edith spent many summers with Claude at his Neolithic chalk cave in the banks of the Seine at Chantemesle, that he had purchased for 300 francs after his time in France during WW1. Here he taught the art of the linocut at informal summer schools. During WWII Claude and Edith lived in London working from their studio off Baker Street. Later fleeing from the blitz they moved to a cottage in Donhead St Andrew. She spent much of her later life at Worth Matravers, the surrounding area becoming a source of inspiration for many of her paintings. In 1973, the year of her death Edith held a solo exhibition at the University of Hull, which was later followed by a memorial exhibition in the same year at the Parkin Gallery dedicated to both Edith and Claude.         Memoirs of an Infantry Officer [with important bibliographic significance]

Faber and Faber, London 1930 - First Trade Edition of the second installment in Sassoon's lightly fictionalized autobiographical trilogy. 8vo: 334,[2]pp. Publisher's French blue cloth, spine lettered in gold, top edge stained pink, fore-edge rough-trimmed; pale yellow typographic dust jacket printed in blue and priced 7s/6d. Loosely laid in is a letter on Faber and Faber stationary, replying to a question asking why some copies of the first edition have uncut [rough-cut] page edges and others do not {Keynes describes the edges as "trimmed."]. "As a matter of fact, it was the author's wish that some part of the first edition should be produced with uncut edges and some 3,000 odd were published in this manner. However, as far as we are concerned there is no difference at all between the cut and uncut edges; both issues were printed simultaneously, the only difference being when the sheets reached the binder's cutting room." According to Keynes, 20,000 copies of the first trade edition were printed, of which (we now know from the testimony of the letter laid into this copy) only 3,000 copies were "uncut," making that issue by far the rarer of the two. An excellent example, with important bibliographic significance, Fine, square and tight (only lightly read, if at all); pages fresh, bright and unmarked; about Fine jacket, lightly dust-soiled, with several flecks of brown ink to back panel. Keynes A33a. In the late 1920s, "Sassoon turned to the prose sequence that was to occupy him for nearly two decades: the well-received Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man was followed by two sequels, Memoirs of an Infantry Officer (1930) and Sherston's Progress (1936), to form a trilogy published as The Complete Memoirs of George Sherston (1937). In these books, the central 'Sherston' character is a semi-fictionalised version of the young Sassoon up to 1917, from which family life ('Sherston' has no mother or brothers), education, and poetic ambition are excised."         Dutch New Guinea Anthropological Photographic Album of Private 1930s Expedition

, 1930. 1930. Hardcover. Fine. Thirty seven images of an unidentified 1930s expedition in northeast Dutch New Guinea from Humboldt Bay (today Jayapura) to Fak Fak, including Lake Sentani (just inland from Jayapura). The album is an anthropological record focussing on the local people, with the Kaya Kaya identified. The images include males of all ages as well as warriors, females, family groups, and their stilt dwellings and canoes. This expedition took place during the period in which the Dutch were intensifying their exploration of western New Guinea, to keep out the British and Germans and to discover exploitable natural resources. There is an American connection with the album - the only identified person is one Charles Gary, an American from Louisville, Kentucky, who was in New Guinea presumably to investigate the possibility of growing tobacco there. The Gary Tobacco Company was apparently formed in 1915 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Liggett and Myers. This leads us to speculate that Gary had an association with Richard Archbold, the wealthy American sponsor of seven expeditions to New Guinea, the first three of which he lead himself. The location of the the third expedition is congruent with photographs in this album. At the same time, the Australian Leahy brothers were active in New Guinea. The first photograph in the album intriguing- it is of three men, two in western suits (one carrying a large camera,) and one in clothes strikingly like the Australian army uniforms in W.W.I, with breeches and puttees. This man resembles Michael Leahy. This album likely records images taken during one of the private expeditions of the time. Its route is not known, but places named here include Hollandia in Humboldt Bay and Fakfak, which were both Netherlands Indies government administrative posts, established in 1894 and 1910, and used as staging sites for the Dutch government expeditions. In 1926, the American-Dutch collaboration called the Stirling Expedition, sponsored by the Smithsonian, traveled along the Mamberamo River to the highlands of Dutch New Guinea. The sepia tone photogravure images include:1. Image of a large native hut on stilts in the water2. "Papuan Warrior of Hollandia", with feathers of white cockatoo in his hair, cassowary feathers around his neck and ankles, boar's tusk in his nose. On the verso is written, in pen and pencil, "Please ret. photo to Mr. Charles Gary, 2611 Top Hill Rd."3. Sepia tone shot of 3 women carrying babies, their village behind them.4.         Holograph revisions to the typescript short story "A High Wind-less Night in Jamaica" by his lover Jane Mason.

Havana (?): n.p. c. mid 1930s - 7 pages quarto, triple-spaced on seven sheets of white paper. Pale brown staining (mostly at left margin of each sheet), rust marks from paper clips, with some pencilled revisions by Jane Mason (one on verso of page 6). Housed in a custom-made dark brown morocco solander box. When Hemingway met Jane Mason she "was the twenty-two-year-old wife of G. Grant Mason, the head of Pan American Airways in Cuba and the owner of a beautifully situated estate in Jaimanitas, west of Havana. With her slender but curvy body and her strawberry blond hair, which she parted in the middle and pulled away from her oval face, she was the most beautiful woman whom Hemingway had ever gone after. A native of Tuxedo Park, New York, and a graduate of Briarcliff, she had made her debut in Washington, D.C., just before her impulsive marriage to Mason. Dancing, drinking, and deep-sea fishing were among her current enthusiasms, and so was pigeon shooting at the Club de Cazadores, a sport in which few other women engaged. Conceivably, [Hemingway] came to think of Jane Mason as his very own Zelda, except that he proposed to make her well by giving her lessons in marlin fishing and by telling her over and over that she wasn't crazy [Mason suffered with manic depression]" (Kenneth S. Lynn, Hemingway, 1987, p.404). With Hemingway's encouragement Jane began writing fiction. In "A High Wind-less Night in Jamaica" (the title echoes Richard Hughes's A High Wind in Jamaica, 1929) she draws upon Hemingway's dictum of "write what you know" and tells the story, from the point of view of an American woman, of a thoroughly unpleasant group of colonial Jamaicans drinking and dancing on a hotel veranda. Hemingway has corrected punctuation, changed verbs, tightened-up phrases, and in general polished the story. His longest revision occurs near the end where Jane has written about her lead character: "I felt strangely sorry for her, despite the fact that in England she was the type who always terrified me, and to whom I am generally rather rude." Hemingway has revised the part in italics to read: ".one would not have felt sorry for her but simply classed her as a bitch without implying any condemnation." The story was submitted to The New Yorker but turned down; it would seem to remain unpublished. On the verso of the first leaf is a pencil sketch of a bearded figure wearing a cap of the type favoured by Hemingway, the face of which is scribbled over, and a sketch of a bare foot.

Dutch New Guinea Anthropological Photographic Album of Private 1930s Expedition

1930. Hardcover. Suggestions pour étoffes et tapis. 60 motifs en couleur

SEGUY, E.-A. Suggestions pour étoffes et tapis. 60 motifs en couleur. Paris: Massin, [1930]. Frontespizio e venti tavole, contenenti sessanta illustrazioni a colori, in cartella editoriale. 46x34 cm. Alcune piccole abrasioni sulla cartella, leggere bruniture e qualche piccola mancanza su alcune delle tavole. [M244] Opera completa, così come pubblicata. E.-A. Seguy fu pittore e illustratore. -

However, it goes on to say the zinc plates began to deteriorate and the edition was halted at 26. Each inside cover has a plate embedded into it. The front cover has an architectural scene, and the rear cover has a dancing scene. All 22 of the artist image etchings is signed. Weber, p. 31: "An interesting pictorial presentation of 'the Montmartre of America,' an area in Manhattan long frequented by authors, artists, and students." The limitation leaf describes Greenwich Village thus: "A hodge-podge of tumble-down tenements, rickety architectural relics, with a great deal of modernity just minced together. Mushroom tea taverns & dancing dens have found lodgement in the attics & cellars." One of the most charming and spirited of Wall's productions.

        Sammlung von 18 Originalentwürfen für Terrazzo-Böden o. ä. O.O u. Dr. u.
