Group of 4 original silver print portrait photographs of the American pianist Edward Kilenyi (1910-2000), ca. 1935, by this noted Jewish Hungarian-born Dutch photographer

Ca. 230 x 190 mm. (9" x 6-3/4"), each with the photographer's stamp in blue ink to verso. One photograph with some spotting and slight silvering. . Kilenyi had a successful international career as a pianist, performing widely in both Europe and North America in the 1930s. He studied at the Liszt Royal Academy in Budapest under Ernst von Dohnányi, with whom he developed a close friendship. Kilenyi's father was a teacher of George Gershwin. Besnyo, born in Budapest, moved to Berlin in 1930, where the photographic avant-garde was prominent; her photographs appeared in the Berliner Illustrierten Zeitung, among other publications. Besnyo became part of a circle of socially and politically engraged intellectuals and artists such as György Kepes, Joris Ivens, John Fernhout, Lászlo Moholy-Nagy, Otto Umbehr (Umbo), Robert Capa, and others. She established her own studio in 1931 but, with the growing threat of National Socialism, moved to Amsterdam in 1932, reaching some prominence there as a photographer until she was forbidden, under the occupation, to engage in all journalistic activities. Besnyo resumed her artistic activities after the war and went on to win many awards for her work. Her photographs are held by museums in both Holland and Germany.         My Early Life, inscribed and dated pre-publication to Lord Beaverbrook

This first edition, first printing, is inscribed and dated six days prior to publication on the ffep.  The unusually personal inscription inked in black in four lines on the ffep reads:  "To Max / from / Winston / Oct 14. 1930".  Confirmed by his bookplate, the inscription is to Lord Beaverbrook, William Maxwell Aitken (1879-1964, Knighted 1911, created Baron Beaverbrook 1917).  Churchill met Beaverbrook in 1911.  Their association proved lifelong, close, sometimes frictional, and both personal and professional.  A dynamic young Canadian millionaire, Beaverbrook moved to England in 1910.  Already a Member of Parliament in 1911, Beaverbrook quickly became both a force in Tory politics and a newspaper mogul.  During and between two World Wars Churchill was supported by Beaverbrook, beset by him, employed by him, served in the Government with him, or some combination of the above.  Their friendship lasted more than 50 years until Beaverbrook's death, less than a year before Churchill's own.  Beaverbrook was one of the three close Churchill friends dubbed with some disapproval by Churchill's wife the "three Bs" - including Bracken and Birkenhead.  Like Churchill, Beaverbrook was intelligent, opinionated, energetic, ambitious, and polarizing.  A formidable friend, he defended Churchill after the WWI Dardanelles disaster.  But just a few years after this book was inscribed their friendship suffered its greatest strain.  During the 1930s Beaverbrook shared "the almost unanimous conviction of England's ruling classes that Winston exaggerates the Nazi menace".  Beaverbrook opposed and belittled Churchill to the point of cruelty, calling his friend a "busted flush" and mocking his exclusion from Tory leadership.  Churchill wrote a widely syndicated biweekly column for Beaverbrook's Evening Standard.  But at the same time, Beaverbrook's famous cartoonist - Low - savaged Churchill.  Beaverbrook fired Churchill after Munich for stridently opposing appeasement  - both a financial blow and a lost rostrum.  Beaverbrook then published news of Churchill's financial distress.  Nonetheless, when Churchill returned to the Admiralty, he advocated to bring Beaverbrook into the Government.  When Churchill became Prime Minister, Beaverbrook became Minister of Aircraft Production - despite the King's explicit reservations - and later Minister of Supply and Minister for Production.  Beaverboook accompanied WSC on wartime visits to Roosevelt and led a British delegation to the Soviet Union, but resigned in 1942, precipitated by dissatisfaction with reconstruction of the Government.  Churchill wrote to him: "We have lived & fought side by side through terrible days, & I am sure our comradeship & public work will undergo no break."  and concluded "I am always yr affectionate friend."  Beaverbrook continued to encourage and defend Churchill throughout the war and beyond.  When Beaverbrook died, Churchill's secretary wrote privately "Sir Winston was deeply and obviously moved at Lord Beaverbrook's death, and in the last years no-one had been closer to him."  Churchill's inscription is in excellent condition, the ink only modestly age faded and the page only slightly toned.  The book itself is in very good condition.  The original coarse cloth binding is square, clean, and tight with bright boards but with some of the spine sunning endemic to this edition, an unobtrusive glue repair to the cloth at the foot of the spine, and light wear to the lower rear hinge.  The contents are bright and clean.  Beaverbrook's armorial bookplate is affixed to the front pastedown, with loss at the edges from an apparent and thankfully aborted effort to remove it.  The joints have been skillfully reinforced.  Moderate spotting is confined to the page edges.  The book is protected in a custom, half-morocco clamshell case in hand-dyed dark plum with raised spine bands and extensive gilt decoration.  Bibliographic reference:  Cohen A91.1.c, Woods/ICS A37(aa), Langworth p.131.

        Paul Robeson, Negro

Harper and Brothers New York: Harper and Brothers. 1930. First. First edition. Corners worn, and the spine has been professionally and nearly seamlessly rebacked, a fair only copy, lacking the dustwrapper. A biography of Robeson by his wife. The Dedication Copy. The printed dedication reads "For Our Son." Their only child, Paul Robeson, Jr., was a mere two years old at the time of publication. This is Paul Robeson, Jr.'s copy with his bold ownership Signature on the front fly (obviously written at a later date). It also has the smaller ownership signature of Rev. Benjamin C. Robeson (Paul Robeson, Sr.'s brother). In addition, the subject of the book, Paul Robeson, Sr., has noted on the rear fly: "April 25, 1956. Have translated = The Soviet Biography . - John. Soldier of Peace." An exact timeline of ownership is impossible to determine, but we suggest this was one of Paul Robeson, Sr.'s own copies, was then given to his brother, and was later inherited by the dedicatee, to whom his mother probably did not see fit to inscribe a copy while he was still in diapers. .

Cakes and Ale [Inscribed Association Copy]

London: Heinemann. (1930). One of Maugham's major novels, a comedy about hypocrisy and literary fame, featuring a writer based on Thomas Hardy and his good-natured wife Rosie. In a 1958 interview, Maugham said it was his favorite of all his novels. A significant association copy, inscribed by the author to his longtime companion and later his adopted son: "For Alan Searle from his friend W. Somerset Maugham/ Oct 6. 1930." Maugham had met Searle in 1928, when Maugham was 54 and Searle was 26; Maugham's partner at the time was Gerald Haxton, and he reportedly alternated between Searle and Haxton until Haxton died in 1944, at which time he settled, at least partially, for Searle. Their relationship continued for the rest of Maugham's life. In 1962, Maugham disowned his biological daughter and adopted Searle and made him his heir. The change in his will was overturned by the courts, but after Maugham died Searle inherited a sum of money, the contents of Maugham's estate, his manuscripts, and the income from his copyrights for the next 30 years. Foxing to edges of text block, else near fine in a very good dust jacket with only modest rubbing to folds, spotting and shelf wear. . First Edition. Hardcover.

Schmied andò in esilio in Marocco. Durante il suo esilio tornò ancora diverse volte a Parigi per curare l'esecuzione di incarichi eccezionali per libri come il Faust e Le tapis de prière.

Sir Gawain & The Green Knight, with Original Dustjacket

Oxford: The Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1930. 2nd Edition. Hard Cover. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Sir Gawain & The Green Knight, edited by J.R.R. Tolkien & E.V. Gordon. One of the first Tolkien related books published, with J.R.R. Tolkien contributing to the preface. Published by the Clarendon Press in 1930, this is the 2nd printing of this book, or the 1st impression of the second edition. Most of these books are well used student copies, whereas this copy is unmarked and even more unusual, it is still housed in it's original Very Good Plus dustjacket. Some light offsetting to the free endpapers, but no foxing to the textblock. Some light fading to the green cloth spine, but the gilt stamping remains clean and bright. The dustjacket has no loss at the corners or the flap folds. While the tips of the spine has some minor edgewear and wrinkling. The dustjacket has some tanning to the spine and browning around the edges. The dustjacket is not price clipped, shows the '7s. 6d. net'. A very nice collectable copy for the Tolkien enthusiast, quite scarce in this desirable condition. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Near Fine / Very Good Plus.

        [Aviation]. Aircraft Markings

N.p., (1930). (28)ff. An informative watercolor manuscript describing the wing and rudder markings of aircraft from the United States, Latin America, Asia, and Europe. Most of the markings date from around the end of World War I, charting the rise of military aviation. The wing marking included under the description "U.S.A. Navy" is the first National Aircraft Insignia for Naval aircraft, which was only used from 1917 to 1918. The symbol was then changed to resemble the markings of the other Allied Powers and to distinguish itself from the enemy. Interestingly, no markings are included from countries within the Central Powers. The illustrations and miniscule text have been executed with military-like precision. A fascinating view into the history of aviation, bound in full vellum. Front endpaper is detatched and cover shows slight soiling; else near fine. (3 by 2 1/4; 76x57mm).

        Rhododendron Pie

New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1930. First Edition, First printing. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Good. First Edition, First printing in very scarce original dustjacket. Very clean deep pink cloth boards with unchipped gold lettering and small decoration on cover and spine. No bumping, fraying or wear. Binding is tight & square, no cracking. Pages are clean; clean endpapers with no names, writing or marks. 359 pgs. (1) on last page indicating Appleton First Edition. This is British author Margery Sharp's first book; a book which is extremely scarce, in and of itself, particularly in excellent condition; with a dustjacket, it is virtually unobtainable. This original dustjacket is clean and bright, not price clipped, but does have a piece missing at top of spine cutting into title area (2-3/4" inch max. depth), additional small edge chips, closed tear at base of rear panel extending approx. 2-1/2" upward. Enclosed in new archival quality mylar cover. From rear flap (Comment from the English Press): "Rhododendron Pie is something more than an amusing and good-natured gibe at literary and artistic snobbery, for all the Laventie family--including the mother, who comes in with a great burst of rhetoric on behalf of the bank clerk at the finish--and the various minor characters are far more than argumentative counters in the attack or defence of aestheticism. They have all authentic lives of their own, and Miss Sharp is particularly successful in catching the accent of those inhabitants of the modern world who carry a magnificent undergraduate irresponsibility into the affairs of everyday life." - The London Times Literary Supplement "We are very grateful for a writer who can understand and see through the pretentiousness of the fastidious dillettanti, and restore the credit of the ordinary inarticulate professional families who take real pleasure in Kipling, Wallace, foot-ball, and the films. Miss Sharp is already a novelist of unusual perception and ripe sympathies. Her development will be worth watching" - The Daily Telegraph. 8vo. Fiction.

        Original Illustrations for a Book?

21 original pen and ink drawings on 12 bi-foliums of artist's paper stock. Nine of the bi-foliums consist of one larger drawing and one vignette; three of the bi-foliums contain a single drawing. Some modest soiling, dampstaining mostly in the margins of a couple drawings, encroaching on only one vignette, very good. Each large drawing is signed "C.R. Macauley"; each vignette is initialed "C.R.M."The Canton, Ohio-born artist won the Pulitzer Prize in 1930 for editorial cartooning in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, and is perhaps best known for popularizing the caricatured image of Teddy Roosevelt brandishing his "big stick." He concentrated on book illustration between 1901-1905. Titles he wrote and illustrated include Fantasma Land, The Red Tavern, Whom the Gods Would Destroy, Keeping the Faith, The Man Across the Street, and The Optimistic Spectacles. Among the many books he illustrated were editions of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, Romance: A Novel by Joseph Conrad and Ford M. Hueffer, Emblemland by John Kendrick Bangs, and The Return of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle.A group of nonsense drawings, some of fantastic subjects. It is unclear from which book these illustrations came from, although they are almost certainly from the period when he was concentrating on book illustration (1901-1905), purchased by us with other book art from the estate of a publisher. A few of the drawings are similar, and may be studies for Emblemland (images of John Bull and another of a talking oyster), but we have been unable at this date to locate some of his other works that might contain the drawings. Provenance on request. .
