Holograph revisions to the typescript short story "A High Wind-less Night in Jamaica" by his lover Jane Mason.

Havana (?): n.p. c. mid 1930s - 7 pages quarto, triple-spaced on seven sheets of white paper. Pale brown staining (mostly at left margin of each sheet), rust marks from paper clips, with some pencilled revisions by Jane Mason (one on verso of page 6). Housed in a custom-made dark brown morocco solander box. When Hemingway met Jane Mason she "was the twenty-two-year-old wife of G. Grant Mason, the head of Pan American Airways in Cuba and the owner of a beautifully situated estate in Jaimanitas, west of Havana. With her slender but curvy body and her strawberry blond hair, which she parted in the middle and pulled away from her oval face, she was the most beautiful woman whom Hemingway had ever gone after. A native of Tuxedo Park, New York, and a graduate of Briarcliff, she had made her debut in Washington, D.C., just before her impulsive marriage to Mason. Dancing, drinking, and deep-sea fishing were among her current enthusiasms, and so was pigeon shooting at the Club de Cazadores, a sport in which few other women engaged. Conceivably, [Hemingway] came to think of Jane Mason as his very own Zelda, except that he proposed to make her well by giving her lessons in marlin fishing and by telling her over and over that she wasn't crazy [Mason suffered with manic depression]" (Kenneth S. Lynn, Hemingway, 1987, p.404). With Hemingway's encouragement Jane began writing fiction. In "A High Wind-less Night in Jamaica" (the title echoes Richard Hughes's A High Wind in Jamaica, 1929) she draws upon Hemingway's dictum of "write what you know" and tells the story, from the point of view of an American woman, of a thoroughly unpleasant group of colonial Jamaicans drinking and dancing on a hotel veranda. Hemingway has corrected punctuation, changed verbs, tightened-up phrases, and in general polished the story. His longest revision occurs near the end where Jane has written about her lead character: "I felt strangely sorry for her, despite the fact that in England she was the type who always terrified me, and to whom I am generally rather rude." Hemingway has revised the part in italics to read: ".one would not have felt sorry for her but simply classed her as a bitch without implying any condemnation." The story was submitted to The New Yorker but turned down; it would seem to remain unpublished. On the verso of the first leaf is a pencil sketch of a bearded figure wearing a cap of the type favoured by Hemingway, the face of which is scribbled over, and a sketch of a bare foot.

Dutch New Guinea Anthropological Photographic Album of Private 1930s Expedition

1930. Hardcover. Fine. Thirty seven images of an unidentified 1930s expedition in northeast Dutch New Guinea from Humboldt Bay (today Jayapura) to Fak Fak, including Lake Sentani (just inland from Jayapura). The album is an anthropological record focussing on the local people, with the Kaya Kaya identified. The images include males of all ages as well as warriors, females, family groups, and their stilt dwellings and canoes. This expedition took place during the period in which the Dutch were intensifying their exploration of western New Guinea, to keep out the British and Germans and to discover exploitable natural resources. There is an American connection with the album - the only identified person is one Charles Gary, an American from Louisville, Kentucky, who was in New Guinea presumably to investigate the possibility of growing tobacco there. The Gary Tobacco Company was apparently formed in 1915 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Liggett and Myers. This leads us to speculate that Gary had an association with Richard Archbold, the wealthy American sponsor of seven expeditions to New Guinea, the first three of which he lead himself. The location of the the third expedition is congruent with photographs in this album. At the same time, the Australian Leahy brothers were active in New Guinea. The first photograph in the album intriguing- it is of three men, two in western suits (one carrying a large camera,) and one in clothes strikingly like the Australian army uniforms in W.W.I, with breeches and puttees. This man resembles Michael Leahy. This album likely records images taken during one of the private expeditions of the time. Its route is not known, but places named here include Hollandia in Humboldt Bay and Fakfak, which were both Netherlands Indies government administrative posts, established in 1894 and 1910, and used as staging sites for the Dutch government expeditions. In 1926, the American-Dutch collaboration called the Stirling Expedition, sponsored by the Smithsonian, traveled along the Mamberamo River to the highlands of Dutch New Guinea. The sepia tone photogravure images include: 1. Image of a large native hut on stilts in the water 2. "Papuan Warrior of Hollandia", with feathers of white cockatoo in his hair, cassowary feathers around his neck and ankles, boar's tusk in his nose. On the verso is written, in pen and pencil, "Please ret. photo to Mr. Charles Gary, 2611 Top Hill Rd." 3. Sepia tone shot of 3 women carrying babies, their village behind them. 4. Men of the village in front of a western building with illegible sign. 5. Men beside an outrigger canoe. The carbon prints images include: 6. Kaya Kaya warriors, 3 men with bows and arrows. Smaller and crisper image with title beneath in ink. 7. Kaya Kaya warriors. Dark, crisp image of 3 men in war plumage. 8/9. Images of women posing for photograph, village in background. 10/11. "Kaya Kaya types - Dutch New Guinea". One image of man with plumage; the second image of a family with child between them. 12/13. Two men posing with younger man; and two men posing with child. The gelatin silver snap shots include: 14/15. "Hollandia - Humboldt Bay" written in pencil. An image of 2 women, and an image of 4 men. 16/17 "Sentani Lake, Dutch New Guinea" written in pencil. An image of houses on stilts, with natives, and an image of villagers on a walkway. 18/19. Man with decoration in white on his face, and image of a standing man. 19/20. 3 men on a dock, village on stilts behind them, and image of young man with bow and arrow, with possible mission buildings behind him. 21/22. 3 men on a dock, in front of a hut, and an image of 7 women and girls of varying ages. 23/24. Man with a spear in front of raised western hut, and an image of 3 women with babies. 25/26. 3 native prisoners with 2 uniformed native guards, and an image of 9 natives entitled "Charlie's Carryers (sic) N. G." 27/28. River view with small boat, and an image of a native with spear standing at his fishing trap. 29/30. "Geelvink Bay, N. Coast D. N. G." in pencil. Image of large hut on stilts beside the water, with large hut on water with canoes (Sentani Lake). 31 - 34. 4 images of village huts and canoes of Humboldt Bay, with two showing the designs on the prows of the canoes. 35/36. "Sentani Lake, N. G.". White cockatoo perched on a branch, and an image of native paddling a dugout canoe. 37. "Ko Kaz, W. coast near Fak Fak". A sepia photogravure image of a hut on stilts.         Suggestions pour étoffes et tapis. 60 motifs en couleur

SEGUY, E.-A. Suggestions pour étoffes et tapis. 60 motifs en couleur. Paris: Massin, [1930]. Frontespizio e venti tavole, contenenti sessanta illustrazioni a colori, in cartella editoriale. 46x34 cm. Alcune piccole abrasioni sulla cartella, leggere bruniture e qualche piccola mancanza su alcune delle tavole. [M244] Opera completa, così come pubblicata. E.-A. Seguy fu pittore e illustratore. -

Four preliminary sheets, each an etching, followed by 22 signed etchings, and finishing up with an unsigned etching as the endsheet. The Limitation page (etched) has written in ink that this is copy 25 of a total of 26. A laid-in typed sheet (dated Lime Rock, Ct. in 1937) states that the original intent was to print 50 copies of this, the third state of the book. However, it goes on to say the zinc plates began to deteriorate and the edition was halted at 26. Each inside cover has a plate embedded into it. The front cover has an architectural scene, and the rear cover has a dancing scene. All 22 of the artist image etchings is signed. Weber, p. 31: "An interesting pictorial presentation of 'the Montmartre of America,' an area in Manhattan long frequented by authors, artists, and students." The limitation leaf describes Greenwich Village thus: "A hodge-podge of tumble-down tenements, rickety architectural relics, with a great deal of modernity just minced together. Mushroom tea taverns & dancing dens have found lodgement in the attics & cellars." One of the most charming and spirited of Wall's productions.

        Maailm on lahti! : VII kogu värsse : 1927 - 1930 (The World is Open! : 7th Verses Collection : 1927 - 1930)

Tallinna Eesti Kirjastus-Ühisus (Estonian Joint Publishing), Tallinn 1930 - Estonian language. Octavo 14 x 20 cm. Weight 210 gr. Wrappers, 121 [1] pp., plus frontispiece leaf. The Book is in Near Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Some foxing spots on the cover and on the frontispiece leaf edges, little wrapped cover corners, light rubbing to the front cover edges, inside is perfect preservation (please see images). The motif of "the world is open" gave title to the present poetry collection. Here the author interferes in 20th century life, displaying a global grasp, and embracing the whole world (trains, stations, buses, aeroplanes and other contemporary technological achievements). Poetry is constantly on the move, man rushes from city to city, from the town to the open world: London, Moscow, Leningrad, Venice, Paris. Describing the relations between man and city that bring about a change of mentality, poet makes use of images from nature, especially poeticising small towns (e.g., "Cycle of a Small Town"). An original nature verse emerges where the old opposition between country/nature and town is clearly felt. Poet is more open and stands closer to nature (e.g., the cycle "Anno Domini"). His usage of words and form indicates an expressionist background. Using new (modern) means of expression, he showed the novelty of his thinking. Barbarus employed unusual comparisons and images, the choice and usage of words is highly uncommon, and this very process made him the conscious creator of Estonian urban poetry. Johannes Barbarus (real name Johannes Vares) (1890-1946) was Estonian greatest modernist poet, doctor and politician. His style of verses varied greatly during his career as a poet. His early works followed the trends of French expressionism and Cubism, later poetry took more realistic turn. Though he didn’t directly participate in politics in the beginning, his left-wing thinking undoubtedly influenced his work. He was a radical socialist and was impressed with the initial ideals of the Soviet Union. His travel experiences also played a role in his worldview and subsequently his writing. Brilliant avant-garde constructivist cover design and frontispiece expressionist woodcut print are created by Estonia's most important avant-garde artist Jaan Vahtra (1882–1947). Among all his other achievements he recognized as the man who brought Cubism to Estonia. Most of all valued according to outstanding works in the field of graphics.

Poema par ormani (Poem about a Cabman)

Zelta grauds (Gold Grain), Riga 1930 - Latvian language. Enlarged format. Octavo 20 x 24 cm. Weight 100 gr. Wrappers, 48 pp., including 3 sheets of illustrations tables. The book is in Near Fine condition, without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Two soft creases across front cover corners, very light stain on the bottom left corner of front. Three amazing ink drawings for the book considered very successful work of Romans Suta. The poet’s ode to the cabman and the partying and entertaining city in which he drove his cart proved to be close in mood to the artist. That is seen in the many cafes, bars and saloons which he drew. Caks's poem depicts Riga's typical cabman, who became gradually replaced by cars. In the second half on 1920s Riga achieved progress in mechanization, jazz, outlandish schlagers, fashion, artistic movements etc. Poet portrays going away silhouette of modern city, which has undergone entire era of changes. In this poem, as in early works, poet swim strongly against the tide, he is against the generally accepted ranges of society and don't evaluate changes positively (here he takes cabman's side). As a poet, Aleksandrs Caks (1901-1950) was a legend, the most influential poet among the Latvian modernists. Caks' poetry is notable for its urban setting and modernity which gave it a strong contrast with the established pastoral and folkloric traditions in Latvian literature. His verses was devoted to Riga’s restless, throbbing life, including topics and characters that had hardly been featured before — the city nightlife, horse taxi drivers (cabmen), shop-windows, streets and boulevards, poverty- stricken suburbs. He is a world-level poet whose works are endowed with all human feelings, a vast scope of emotions and a passionate love. Aleksandrs Caks’ verse heralded the origination of the modern Latvian poetry by proposing new aesthetic principles and poetic forms. The format characteristics of his verse - rhyme, rhythm and imagery - have influenced succeeding generations of poets. Caks poetry is full of extravagant comparisons and metaphors. He keeps the reader riveted by the vivid scenery, the wealth of personifications, wild imagination and expressivness of his language. The lyrical strand of Latvian poetry is not absent even from Caks's most modernist, futurist poems. Artist Romans Suta (1896-1944) considered as outstanding representative of classical modernism in Latvia's art history. In the late 1910s, Romans Suta created artworks with simple forms and heightened expression. He often depicted Latvians, forged by war and their lives as refugees. By the first half of the 1920s, artist increasingly turned to the styles of Constructivism and Cubism. Very popular became his works in the field of graphic art - series of indian ink drawings which depict inviolable components of an urban environment, along with wine lovers, card players, musicians and dancers.
