        The Savoy Cocktail Book

London: Constable & Company, Ltd, 1930. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good +. Rumbold, Gilbert. 12 mo - over 6.75" to 7.75" tall, 292 pps. A cultural icon and the foundation for all great modern bartending books. Harry Craddock (1876-1963), British by birth, had emigrated to the US in 1897 but moved back to Britain with the advent of prohibition, landing a job at the American Bar at the Savoy Hotel, London, in 1920. His bartending guide, a collection of 750 recipes (several of which he is credited for creating) was published in 1930 and remains in print today. This copy is a first printing, with the date on the title page and before the publishers inserted the errata slip modifying the "Bacardi Special Cocktail" on page 25 to simply "Bacardi Cocktail". We believe the UK edition was published prior to the US, as there is an advertisement for the book dated November 23, 1930 in the London Observer while the ealiest mention found in the US is a review in the Hartford Courant dated December 7, 1930. This copy with an inserted ad spread for Booth's Gin ("Welcomed by the Gallants of 1740") as a tipped in sheet between the half-title and title pages. ***DESCRIPTION: Decorated paper boards with an Art Deco design, black cloth spine, pictorial endpapers, 2-page ad spread for Booth's Gin tipped into the book between the half-title and the title pages, 1930 date on the title page, decorations and illustrations throughout by Gilbert Rumbold (as late as the 1950s, he was living in Broadstairs, continuing to sketch drawings of local scenes that were sold in gift shops around the town, despite having lost an arm in a train accident); duodecimo size (just under 7.5" tall), pagination: half-title page with Aldrich quote on verso (1-2), inserted ad spread (i-iv), title page (3) through 286 includes three pages with only blank lines at the end, page 287 a vignette of a haughty woman peering through a lorgnette off to the side, followed by the printer's statement (printed by Lowe & Brydone, London), (288). ***CONDITION: We are rating as good plus due to overall wear to the binding; there is some light rubbing to the front board, general fairly minor edgewear, wear to the head and tail of the spine including light loss of the cloth, there is a bend in the spine running vertically down the center, and the gilt lettering on the spine has rubbed off; both hinges are tender although the endpapers have not cracked, and there is some offsetting to the endpapers from the inks on the pages opposite. The interior pages are clean and bright, we see no prior owner markings of any kind, there is perhaps a hint of toning to the pages, the interior is near fine. ***POSTAGE: International customers note that additional postage may apply, please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. The Ajanta Caves in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state of India are about 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments which date from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 or 650 CE. The caves include paintings and rock cut sculptures described as among the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art, particularly expressive painting that present emotion through gesture, pose and form. . According to UNESCO, these are masterpieces of Buddhist religious art that influenced Indian art that followed. The caves were built in two phases, the first group starting around the 2nd century BC, while the second group of caves built around 400-650 AD according to older accounts, or all in a brief period of 460 to 480 according to Walter M. Spink. The site is a protected monument in the care of the Archaeological Survey of India, and since 1983, the Ajanta Caves have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. . The Ajanta Caves constitute ancient monasteries and worship halls of different Buddhist traditions carved into a 250 feet wall of rock. The caves also present paintings depicting the past lives and rebirths of the Buddha, pictorial tales from Aryasura's Jatakamala, as well as rock-cut sculptures of Buddhist deities in vogue between the 2nd century BCE and 5th century CE. . Textual records suggest that these caves served as a monsoon retreat for monks, as well as a resting site for merchants and pilgrims in ancient India. While vivid colours and mural wall painting were abundant in Indian history as evidenced by historical records, Caves 16, 17, 1 and 2 of Ajanta form the largest corpus of surviving ancient Indian wall-painting. . Panoramic view of Ajanta Caves from the nearby hill . Ajanta is famous for its ancient Buddhist paintings.

Cakes and Ale or the Skeleton in the Cupboard

Heinemann, London 1930 - First edition, first state with won instead of won't in line 14 of page 147. 270 pp. 1 vols. 12mo. After Of Human Bondage, Cakes and Ale is probably Maugham's finest novel, and certainly one of his most popular. Of it, Maugham wrote: "The book I like best is Cakes and Ale. It was an amusing book to write". Notes the author's biographer: "His [output] had its ups and downs. Cakes and Ale was one of the ups. He went on writing for another thirty years but never matched it in style or structure. It was a pity that the scandal surrounding the models for the main characters drew the attention of the literary community away from the book's real merit." Today, of course, it is those models who provide the fun: Driffield, the Grand Old Man of Letters (Thomas Hardy), and the writer-on-the-make Alroy Kear, a highly unflattering portrait of the novelist Hugh Walpole, who never forgave Maugham for writing his most malicious--but also his funniest--book.

PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF 94 ORIGINAL, SEPIATONE IMAGES TAKEN BY TRAVELLERS TO THE BRITISH COLONY OF RHODESIA [NOW ZIMBABWE] WITH A SOJOURN TO SOUTH AFRICA IN THE 1930S

1930s. In an album made by Newlyn of London, comprising blue cloth over heavy boards and leaves of gray boards with photo-windows, are 94 photographs measuring 3.25" x 4" that feature the Zulu tradition, Victoria Falls, etc. Album, 9.5" x 6" with "Photographs" and a gilt emblem on the cover. In the self-governing colony of Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), the point of this voyage was two-fold: to interact with some of Africa's Bantu people, and to observe the rush of Victoria Falls as first sighted by David Livingstone in 1855. Following a pleasant sea voyage with all of the comforts and entertainments expected of a British cruise company, this party of travelers visited the grave of Cecil Rhodes, which lies among the rock formations of the Matopos, and also the Shangani Patrol Memorial erected to commemorate Major Wilson's Last Stand during the first Matabele War in 1893. Zulu people are seen near the front of the album in a small town, and later the men are photographed on the banks of the Zambezi River in a long canoe, while the women fill clay water jugs to carry on their heads for many miles. Victoria Falls, with its immense gorges and raging waters, appear in no fewer than a dozen photographs. Lake Victoria is photographed, along with Victorial Falls Bridge, built in 1905. Our travelers attend and photograph a sport-related celebration where the British flag is prominent, and where African men perform a traditional dance with a large group of musicians playing hand-crafted, three-foot-wide wooden xylophones. A flavorful photo album. Very Good.

The Ajanta Caves site are mentioned in the memoirs of several medieval era Chinese Buddhist travelers to India and by a Mughal era official of Akbar era in early 17th century. They were covered by jungle until accidentally "discovered" and brought to the Western attention in 1819 by a colonial British officer on a tiger hunting party. The Ajanta caves are located on the side of a rocky cliff that is on the north side of a U-shaped gorge on the small river Waghur, in the Deccan plateau. .         Moby Dick or The Whale (3 Volumes)

Chicago: The Lakeside Press, 1930. Deluxe Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Signed. First edition thus, limited to 1,000 copies. Three volumes in publisher's acetate jackets, lacking the aluminum slipcase. Presentation copy signed by Rockwell Kent on the front free end paper of Volume I, "Inscribed with affectionate friendship to Putzie - Rockwell Kent, 1950." Volumes II and III bear Rockwell Kent-illustrated bookplates of Marie Luise Hinrichs. Very Good+. Narrow strips of sunning to spine cloth at ends, light rubbing to cloth at extremities and light abrasions to black topstains. Pages toned and with offsetting from illustrations. Acetate wrappers are wrinkled and shrunken with age, as is typical, and show a bit of chipping and edge wear, with some separation starting between the acetate and a paper flap on both volumes II and III; acetate on volume II with light staining. A stunning presentation copy, inscribed by Kent, and with bookplates designed by him as well. John Schulman writes in the ABAA blog The New Antiquarian that this edition "is the crowning achievement of the Lakeside Press and also one of the triumphs of Machine Age book design and illustration in America. [Rockwell] Kent’s affinity for the sea and knowledge of sea-faring gave his illustrations even more power and accuracy." It also helped to propel Moby Dick from semi-obscurity into its current fame as perhaps the quintessential American novel.
