Small folio (10-1/4" x 13-1/2") consisting of 10 loose lithographs drawn on the stone by Zhenya Gay, each SIGNED by the artist. laid into the first signature of the book which in turn is laid into a cloth-backed marbled board folder with a large paper label on the front cover and with ribbon ties. There was a total edition of 1520 copies illustrated with 12 lithographs and SIGNED by the artist and the printer on the limitation page. This is a special publication, not known previously by us and, having been acquired directly from the publisher's files, is likely unique. Each of the 10 lithographs is SIGNED by the artist, which was not the case with the printed book. The inner first signature folder consists of the title page, the limitation page on the verso which is SIGNED by the artist but not by the printer, and the half-title page with the verso blank. Also laid in is a sheet of paper on which is written in pencil "Supplementary Set" with measurements and other calculations on the verso.

The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club

[1930]. The First Brock Illustrated Editionof Dickens' First BookIn a Charming 1930s Pictorial Binding by Riviére & Son[RIVIÉRE & SON, Binders]. DICKENS, Charles. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club. Illustrated in Color by C.E. Brock. London: George G. Harrap, [1930]. First Brock illustrated edition. Large octavo. xx, 687, [1, blank] pp. Sixteen full-page color plates, including frontispiece. Bound ca. 1930 by Riviére & Son (stamp-signed on front turn-in) in full navy blue morocco with gilt-ruled border and large, central gilt-ruled pictorial panel of multicolored morocco inlays reproducing "Take this little villain away!" the plate facing page 134. Raised bands with gilt tooling, compartments decorated in gilt. Board edges and turn-ins decoratively gilt-tooled. A splendid copy. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club was Dickens' first published novel, originally serialized in monthly parts by Chapman & Hall April 1836 through November 1837, and published in book form on November 17, 1837. Charles Dickens, struggling to establish himself as an author, had been selling stories to the Monthly Magazine and the Evening Chronicle that were popular and earned him an enthusiastic reception. Impressed, publisher Chapman & Hall approached him. The result was the creation of Mr. Pickwick, and an illustrious career. Dickens was twenty-five years old.C[harles]. E[dmund]. Brock (1870-1938) was a widely published English line artist and book illustrator who earned his first book commission at age twenty. He became a very successful illustrator, best known for his line work, initially in the tradition of Hugh Thomson, but he was also a skilled colorist. Brock's work varied with the sort of story he was illustrating, some of it refined and described as "sensitive to the delicate, teacup-and-saucer primness and feminine outlook of the early Victorian novelists," while other work was "appreciative of the healthy, boisterous, thoroughly English characters," i.e. soldiers, rustics, and "horsey types." Other illustrations were grotesqueries drawn to amuse children looking at or reading storybooks.Kelly, p. 164.

The Canterbury Tales of Geoffrey Chaucer. Together with a Version in Modern English Verse, by William Van Wyck

NY: Covici-Freide, 1930. Two large quarto volumes. 530pp. numbered consecutively. Limited to 924 copies signed by Kent. With twenty-five full-page illustrations by Rockwell Kent, printed in brown and black, and more than fifty smaller decorations. In a unique sculptural binding signed by the Dutch artist Pierre Thielen. Executed in 1992, this breathtaking modernist binding may well become the cornerstone of Thielen's widely acclaimed work. Thielen has created a cathedral motif for the central part of the two-sided slipcase by incorporating long pointed strips of leather-covered boards of varying lengths to signify the spires of Canterbury Cathedral. Between the spires is a gold-colored staff, symbolizing the pilgrimage. The cathedral motif is repeated in both the boards of the slipcases and the bindings. Bound in calf leather, the bindings have been "patinated" in red and black, the black being Chinese ink and the red a diluted solution of acrylic paint. The whole is finished with "glaco-cuir," a book-leather wax. This exquisite binding represents the perfect complement to Kent's striking illustrations and, in juxtaposition, provides a twentieth-century context for Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Included are the original binder's pencil and ink sketches. Some show Thielen's early designs, which were later abandoned; others show the development of the present binding, complete with a proposed color scheme. Trained in Maastricht as a master gold, silver, and wrought iron smith, Pierre Thielen is also a poet, painter, sculptor, and prize-winning binder. In an interview ("Boek en Band," 1986) he said "Jewelry of half an inch square or a very large sculpture: both are architecture. It transcends the measurements; it's the conceptual idea that has the greatness. The binding of a book, too, has a close relationship to architecture." This binding is free-standing, and functions as a graceful, beautifully crafted piece of sculpture. Although the lines are clean and modern, it recalls the upward-reaching quality of Gothic cathedrals. Few small scuffs to spine, otherwise fine in a cleverly designed, fitted box.

        Samson Agonistes

      - Florence - Stamperia del Santuccio, 1930 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A limited edition of Milton's Samson Agonistes. Bound in parchment and printed on rag-paper, with watermark. Scarce. Limited edition, number 81 of 103. Includes promotional excerpt. Hammer began his apprenticeship in architecture at the age of fifteen in the studio of Camillo Sitte, author of Der Staedte-Bau nach seinen kuenstlerischen Graundsaetzen. In 1898 he transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, which he left ten years later. Hammer produced his first type design, Hammer Uncial, in 1921. In 1922, he moved to Florence, Italy, where he set up a printing press. In 1929, he moved his printing operation into the Villa Santuccio in Florence and named it the Stamperia del Santuccio. The first book that was printed in this operation was Milton's Samson Agonistes (1931), using what would be known as his Samson Uncial type. Punches for the type were cut by Paul Koch, son of Rudolf Koch. Hammer moved to Kolbsheim in Alsace in 1934 where he designed and built a chapel on an estate for a friend. From 1936 to 1939, Hammer lived in Vienna, where he served as professor at the Akademie der Bildenden Knste. In 1939, he secretly fled Vienna due to World War II and emigrated to the United States of America, where he taught at Wells College in Aurora, New York until 1948. Here he produced American Uncial - the best known of his five typefaces. In 1948, Hammer settled in Lexington, Kentucky and was artist-in-residence at Transylvania University, a post he held until retirement in 1953. While in Kentucky, Hammer was known for designing the official seal of Louisville, which was used until the city's City-County government merger in 2003. Hammer built his wooden press in 1927 with the help of local Florentine craftsmen based on a press in the Laurentian Library; in 1960, the Laurentian's press was discovered to be a copy constructed in 1818. [1] It was first used to print Samson Agonistes. When he closed his studio in 1933 the press was stored. In 1954 it was moved to the University of Kentucky where it has been in use by the King Library Press since 1959. Samson Agonistes is a tragic closet drama by John Milton. It appeared with the publication of Milton's Paradise Regain'd in 1671. It draws on the story of Samson from the Old Testament, Judges 13-16. This is the first printed work of Victor Hammer's Stamperia del Santuccio. Victor Hammer (1882 - 1967) born in Vienna, Austria, was a painter, sculptor, printer, and typographer. The Stamperia del Santuccio was Victor Hammer's first press, established with his wife, Carolyn Reading Hammer, in 1929 in Florence, Italy. The press was located in an old villa and later relocated to Lexington, Kentucky, when the Hammers moved to the United States. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is almost no wear to the extremities. Internally the pages are bright with mild background spotting throughout. Overall the condition is very good..

Photograph album of yachting and deep-sea fishing cruises with manuscript titles:] Southern Cruise of the Yacht "Ara" [to the Bahamas and Cuba], Feb. 1925 [and:] Southern Cruise of the Yacht "Ara" from Miami (Fisher's Island) Fla. [to Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba] on March 6th to April 2nd, 1930

n.p., 1925; 1930 - A private family album documenting two of the tours of the celebrated yacht Ara, owned by William K. Vanderbilt II. Although Vanderbilt published numerous volumes recording his cruises, these voyages do not appear among his published logs. The photographs are captioned by his daughter Muriel, who records numerous details in a neat hand. The cast of characters in 1925 includes "Pops" (Wm. K. Vanderbilt II), "Self" (Muriel), her sister Consie (Consuelo), Muriel's fiancé Freddy (Frederic C. Church, Jr., whom she married in July 1925 and divorced in 1929), Ellen, & Dick. Muriel's uncle Harry (Harold S. Vanderbilt) makes a walk-on appearance in Key West. Among the party's activities was fishing, with more than a dozen photographs showing the sisters working the rod, members of the party with the morning's catch (variously tuna, barracuda, shark, and a sea turtle), and portraits of the three young ladies, Dick, and Freddy, each holding a trophy catch. The 1930 cruise to Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba, with a party including Muriel, "Pops", Rosie (his second wife, Rosamund), and Tony, comprises views from the yacht and at ports of call, as well as many scenes of rafting on the Rio Grande River and a few snapshots of fishing on the Demaji River (where the log details three days of successful tarpon fishing, not illustrated). The group of post cards includes scenes in Cuba, Haiti, Lake Tahoe, and the Monterey coast in California, including several real photo cards of the Pebble Beach area, among them a shot of woman golfer Marion Hollins on the 7th Green. A window into a lost world of private travel and an excellent visual record of two Vanderbilt family cruises, with good sporting content (VANDERBILT, WILLIAM K., II) Oblong 4to. With 155 photographs (86 3-1/2 x 6 inches; 69 3 x 4-1/2 inches) corner mounted on album leaves, 2 to 4 per page, captioned in ink by Muriel Vanderbilt. 94 numbered pages, of which pages 49-80 additionally contain 63 mounted post cards (10 real photo post cards, 32 printed color cards, 21 black & white cards). With 5-page typescript log of 1930 cruise inserted at p. 28. Black leatherette album, with leaves on two posts, tied with cord. Condition generally very good to fine, some photos with fading or silvering. For the Ara cf. Toy 608 & 758 (for 1924 & 1926 cruises); Morris & Howland p. 148

Léon BENIGNI (1892-1948) a illustré Alfred de MUSSET (Bénézit, I, 624-25).
