Cakes and Ale [Inscribed Association Copy]

London: Heinemann. (1930). One of Maugham's major novels, a comedy about hypocrisy and literary fame, featuring a writer based on Thomas Hardy and his good-natured wife Rosie. In a 1958 interview, Maugham said it was his favorite of all his novels. A significant association copy, inscribed by the author to his longtime companion and later his adopted son: "For Alan Searle from his friend W. Somerset Maugham/ Oct 6. 1930." Maugham had met Searle in 1928, when Maugham was 54 and Searle was 26; Maugham's partner at the time was Gerald Haxton, and he reportedly alternated between Searle and Haxton until Haxton died in 1944, at which time he settled, at least partially, for Searle. Their relationship continued for the rest of Maugham's life. In 1962, Maugham disowned his biological daughter and adopted Searle and made him his heir. The change in his will was overturned by the courts, but after Maugham died Searle inherited a sum of money, the contents of Maugham's estate, his manuscripts, and the income from his copyrights for the next 30 years. Foxing to edges of text block, else near fine in a very good dust jacket with only modest rubbing to folds, spotting and shelf wear. . First Edition. Hardcover.

Robinson, Joan Bennett and Dan Duryea. Very Good or better in original wrappers, slightly cocked with an equally slight roll and some faint creasing to the spine panel. A book that was a bestseller in its day, with this edition reprinted at least 26 times.

Schmied andò in esilio in Marocco. Durante il suo esilio tornò ancora diverse volte a Parigi per curare l'esecuzione di incarichi eccezionali per libri come il Faust e Le tapis de prière.

Sir Gawain & The Green Knight, with Original Dustjacket

Oxford: The Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1930. 2nd Edition. Hard Cover. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Sir Gawain & The Green Knight, edited by J.R.R. Tolkien & E.V. Gordon. One of the first Tolkien related books published, with J.R.R. Tolkien contributing to the preface. Published by the Clarendon Press in 1930, this is the 2nd printing of this book, or the 1st impression of the second edition. Most of these books are well used student copies, whereas this copy is unmarked and even more unusual, it is still housed in it's original Very Good Plus dustjacket. Some light offsetting to the free endpapers, but no foxing to the textblock. Some light fading to the green cloth spine, but the gilt stamping remains clean and bright. The dustjacket has no loss at the corners or the flap folds. While the tips of the spine has some minor edgewear and wrinkling. The dustjacket has some tanning to the spine and browning around the edges. The dustjacket is not price clipped, shows the '7s. 6d. net'.         [Aviation]. Aircraft Markings

N.p., (1930). (28)ff. An informative watercolor manuscript describing the wing and rudder markings of aircraft from the United States, Latin America, Asia, and Europe. Most of the markings date from around the end of World War I, charting the rise of military aviation. The wing marking included under the description "U.S.A. Navy" is the first National Aircraft Insignia for Naval aircraft, which was only used from 1917 to 1918. The symbol was then changed to resemble the markings of the other Allied Powers and to distinguish itself from the enemy. Interestingly, no markings are included from countries within the Central Powers. The illustrations and miniscule text have been executed with military-like precision. A fascinating view into the history of aviation, bound in full vellum. Front endpaper is detatched and cover shows slight soiling; else near fine. (3 by 2 1/4; 76x57mm).

        Rhododendron Pie

New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1930. First Edition, First printing. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Good. First Edition, First printing in very scarce original dustjacket. Very clean deep pink cloth boards with unchipped gold lettering and small decoration on cover and spine. No bumping, fraying or wear. Binding is tight & square, no cracking. Pages are clean; clean endpapers with no names, writing or marks. 359 pgs. (1) on last page indicating Appleton First Edition. This is British author Margery Sharp's first book; a book which is extremely scarce, in and of itself, particularly in excellent condition; with a dustjacket, it is virtually unobtainable. This original dustjacket is clean and bright, not price clipped, but does have a piece missing at top of spine cutting into title area (2-3/4" inch max. depth), additional small edge chips, closed tear at base of rear panel extending approx. 2-1/2" upward. Enclosed in new archival quality mylar cover. From rear flap (Comment from the English Press): "Rhododendron Pie is something more than an amusing and good-natured gibe at literary and artistic snobbery, for all the Laventie family--including the mother, who comes in with a great burst of rhetoric on behalf of the bank clerk at the finish--and the various minor characters are far more than argumentative counters in the attack or defence of aestheticism. They have all authentic lives of their own, and Miss Sharp is particularly successful in catching the accent of those inhabitants of the modern world who carry a magnificent undergraduate irresponsibility into the affairs of everyday life." - The London Times Literary Supplement "We are very grateful for a writer who can understand and see through the pretentiousness of the fastidious dillettanti, and restore the credit of the ordinary inarticulate professional families who take real pleasure in Kipling, Wallace, foot-ball, and the films. Miss Sharp is already a novelist of unusual perception and ripe sympathies. Her development will be worth watching" - The Daily Telegraph. 8vo. Fiction.

        Original Illustrations for a Book?

21 original pen and ink drawings on 12 bi-foliums of artist's paper stock. Nine of the bi-foliums consist of one larger drawing and one vignette; three of the bi-foliums contain a single drawing. Some modest soiling, dampstaining mostly in the margins of a couple drawings, encroaching on only one vignette, very good. Each large drawing is signed "C.R. Macauley"; each vignette is initialed "C.R.M."The Canton, Ohio-born artist won the Pulitzer Prize in 1930 for editorial cartooning in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, and is perhaps best known for popularizing the caricatured image of Teddy Roosevelt brandishing his "big stick." He concentrated on book illustration between 1901-1905. Titles he wrote and illustrated include Fantasma Land, The Red Tavern, Whom the Gods Would Destroy, Keeping the Faith, The Man Across the Street, and The Optimistic Spectacles. Among the many books he illustrated were editions of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, Romance: A Novel by Joseph Conrad and Ford M. Hueffer, Emblemland by John Kendrick Bangs, and The Return of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle.A group of nonsense drawings, some of fantastic subjects. It is unclear from which book these illustrations came from, although they are almost certainly from the period when he was concentrating on book illustration (1901-1905), purchased by us with other book art from the estate of a publisher. A few of the drawings are similar, and may be studies for Emblemland (images of John Bull and another of a talking oyster), but we have been unable at this date to locate some of his other works that might contain the drawings. Provenance on request. .

[Original Art]: Six Large Military Themed Animal Paintings

[Circa 1940s]. Six original paintings, each measuring 17" x 25". Gouache on artist boards. Near fine with some toning to the edges of a couple of paintings and tape remnants on the rear of each, but each image is still exceptionally fresh and vivid. The six images depict various animals -- squirrel, owl, lion, dog, bear, and rooster -- all with military hats and one with a complete uniform, suggesting the art was created during World War II or possibly the Korean War. Several of the paintings appear to reinforce wartime ideals of conservation (squirrel storing nuts), education (the owl reading), and military service (the lion sitting on a pile of money with the various bills labeled "Security," "Leadership," "Welfare," "Prestige," and so on). The rear of two paintings have the fading stamp of the Simmons-Beal Agency that was located at 3 E. 40th Street in New York City from the 1930-1990s. We could find no specific information on the artist aside from references to several children's books he may have illustrated during the 1950s. While his background is unclear to us, his artistic skills are quite apparent. An amusing and clever collection of mid-century children's animal paintings promoting perceived American virtues. .

Good Medicine: The Illustrated Letters of Charles M. Russell. (with a signed introduction by Will Rogers and a signed sketch by Edward Borein)

Garden City, New York.: Doubleday, Doran & Company.. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. 4to - 30.5 x 23 cm.; xii - pages 13 to 162. A coarse-weave light olive green cloth with gilt spine letting on red panels, gilded steer head motif on a red panel centered on the front board and ruled gilt lines on both front and back boards so as to resemble a half bound binding. This is the first trade edition after the printing of 134 De Luxe copies. Full colour pictorial end papers both front and back. This volume was the personal copy of the silent screen star Irene Rich and comes from the estate of Francis Rich, her daughter. Signed by Will Rogers on the bottom of page 16 at the end of his four page introduction: "Irene says this is for you David. Remember when they throwed me out of the Bohemian Grove? Charley could have wrote a good letter about that. Will Rogers". A full page pen and ink sketch, signed by Edward Borein, of a mounted rider overlooking the edge of a bluff with three trees in the background is on the half title page. This sketch is untitled other than the serendipitous title that "Good Medicine" gives to it. Some mild offsetting from this sketch to the facing page, the verso of the front free end paper. With regards the signature, there is a smearing of the dot on the "i" and the vertical stroke of the "n" as though the page was brushed accidently while the ink was still wet. The spine is faded (sunned) to a straw yellow colour. Housed in a simple board slip case that is partially split along the top edges. All in all, a handsome book with fascinating inscriptions and associations.; Signed by One Author .

Five Line Blocks of The Goops

[circa 1930s]. Five partial line blocks from one of Gelett Burgess's Goops books that had been repurposed for a McNeil Laboratories advertisement circa 1930s. Zinc metal plates mounted on wood blocks of various sizes from approximately 2" x 2.5" to 6.5" x 4". A touch of damage to the head of one Goop, likely from the blocks being cut down from a larger full-sized image, else near fine. Laid in is an Autographed Letter Signed from Grace McNeil along with an envelope and the tattered original mailer from McNeil Laboratories. Grace McNeil was the wife of Robert Lincoln McNeil, who in 1933 founded McNeil Laboratories which is now part of Johnson & Johnson. She apparently sent the wood blocks to a friend to use and explains in the letter: "These are the remnants of the 'Goops.' The book of the original design was once lent to I-don't-remember-Whom. So this is all! I don't seem to have a printing of a third flyer [advertisement], which there is a die of. If you can use them the printer can cut away the names, as we had done."The Goops were a popular series of seven children's books published by Burgess starting in 1900 with Goops and How to be Them and ending with New Goops and How to Know Them in 1951, the year of his death. The books taught children manners by exposing readers to the poor behavior of the ever bumptious Goops children depicted through pictures and verse. The line blocks here show Goops cooking, sitting at a table eating, walking with packages, and using an early telephone. McNeil Laboratories incorporated the Goops into their advertising by cutting down some of the line blocks used to print their books and recycling select images that best fit their marketing needs.A nice example of licensing for this popular 20th Century children's book and the recyclable nature of materials during The Great Depression. .

[140 photographs of Travel in the Potosi Mining Area].

54 leaves, images mounted rectos only. Double post-holed Heinn Co. large-format photo album with metal spine and pebbled cloth covered boards. Illus. with b/w photos. Most photos are 3 x 4 inch format (three 8" x 10" in sepia enlargements) covering a variety of subjects, mainly from near the city of Potosi in Bolivia, which had been built close to its 'Silver Mountain' - mined since the days of the Spanish conquest for silver and other valuable metals; images of settlements and small rail hubs, areas that are used for llama and mule loading and commercial transport; dwellings of native peoples, including caves and adobe, shanties; automobile travel with several views of treacherous roadways and terrain, one with auto stuck in the mud to its axles, breakdowns, makeshift stream-fording. While not specifically identified, it is most likely this album was the record of either an engineering survey team or a geological expedition, as there are several images of men examining charts, with surveying instruments set up; tent camping 'on the trail', many views of the rugged landscape and rocky paths and routes; roadways, several images of railroad tracks and rolling stock; waterways and retaining walls, reinforced roadbeds, culverts, bridges including a suspension bridge; several shots taken in the city of Potosi including street scenes. An excellent glimpse of the harsh conditions in the Potosi region and the difficulties of transportation, travel and survival, that a population living and working at an average elevation of over 13, 000 feet, faced. Photographs generally very good, a few loose, mounted on clean black stock, in much worn and chipped covers.
