        THE SAVOY COCKTAIL BOOK

New York: Richard R. Smith, 1930. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good+ binding. Quite a beautiful, crisp copy of this iconic cocktail book, with bright spine and just a very small amount of rubbing the foil paper-covered boards. There are two very small drops of something "clear" -- could it be clear nail polish? -- to the front cover. There is a lightly penned name on the dedication page, and on the colophon page at the end of the book. Really an outstanding copy. Very Good+ binding.

Vol. 10 of 29 Atlases of Insurance Maps for Queens. Jackson Heights & East Elmhurst

Sanborn Map Company, New York 1930 - This volume includes the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway expansion which connected to Grand Central Parkway, the La Guardia Airport prior to runway extension, and original avenue names (Schurz, Patterson, Fillmore etc.). The Sanborn map collection consists of a uniform series of large scale maps, dating from 1867 to the present depicting the commercial, industrial, and residential sections of some twelve thousand cities and towns in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The maps were designed to assist fire insurance agents in determining the degree of hazard associated with a particular property and therefore show the size, shape and construction of dwellings, commercial buildings, and factories as well as fire walls locations of windows and doors, sprinkler systems, and types of roofs. The maps also indicate widths and names of streets, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. They show locations of water mains, giving their dimensions, and of fire alarm boxes and hydrants. Sanborn maps are an unrivaled source of information about the structure and use of buildings in American Cities. The collection includes some fifty thousand editions of fire insurance maps comprising an estimated seven hundred thousand individual sheets. The Library of Congress holdings represent the largest extant collection of maps produced by the Sanborn Map Company. The majority of the maps were acquired by the Library through copyright deposit, but the collection was substantially enriched in 1967 when the Bureau of the Census transferred to the Library of Congress a complete set. The 1,899 loose-leaf binders were particularly noteworthy because they included later editions than those previously acquired by the Library. The Bureau of the Census set of maps had been regularly updated by printed, paste-on corrections supplied by the Sanborn Map Company, whereas the Library of Congress copies were retained in the form in which they were copyrighted. Atlas. Lithograph with original hand coloring. Massive elephant folio. Decorative calligraphic titles, indices, and key maps. Contains a set of 94 maps along with changes recorded on paste-on correction slips through 1974. Quarter leather binding with gilt title on front and spine. Large tear to spine of original protective canvas cover. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Rhododendron Pie

New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1930. First Edition, First printing. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Good. First Edition, First printing in very scarce original dustjacket. Very clean deep pink cloth boards with unchipped gold lettering and small decoration on cover and spine. No bumping, fraying or wear. Binding is tight & square, no cracking. Pages are clean; clean endpapers with no names, writing or marks. 359 pgs. (1) on last page indicating Appleton First Edition. This is British author Margery Sharp's first book; a book which is extremely scarce, in and of itself, particularly in excellent condition; with a dustjacket, it is virtually unobtainable. This original dustjacket is clean and bright, not price clipped, but does have a piece missing at top of spine cutting into title area (2-3/4" inch max. depth), additional small edge chips, closed tear at base of rear panel extending approx. 2-1/2" upward. Enclosed in new archival quality mylar cover. From rear flap (Comment from the English Press): "Rhododendron Pie is something more than an amusing and good-natured gibe at literary and artistic snobbery, for all the Laventie family--including the mother, who comes in with a great burst of rhetoric on behalf of the bank clerk at the finish--and the various minor characters are far more than argumentative counters in the attack or defence of aestheticism. They have all authentic lives of their own, and Miss Sharp is particularly successful in catching the accent of those inhabitants of the modern world who carry a magnificent undergraduate irresponsibility into the affairs of everyday life." - The London Times Literary Supplement "We are very grateful for a writer who can understand and see through the pretentiousness of the fastidious dillettanti, and restore the credit of the ordinary inarticulate professional families who take real pleasure in Kipling, Wallace, foot-ball, and the films. Miss Sharp is already a novelist of unusual perception and ripe sympathies. Her development will be worth watching" - The Daily Telegraph. 8vo. Fiction.

ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF AUTHOR ZANE GREY And His Brother Romer Grey on a Bear Hunting Trip

circa 1930. A fine original photograph of Zane and Romer Grey displaying the results of a bear hunt together. The Photograph is SIGNED BY ZANE GREY, but the ink has faded and only the impression remains viewable in angled light. Black and white photograph, approximately 8 by 6.5 inches, mounted in textured buff board with beveled edge and handsomely framed in wood and glazed. The photograph itself is in beautiful condition with no fading or chipping, the contrast is excellent and the image is defined and clear, frame and mounting are very fine, the signature however is faded to near invisibility. A very handsome original photograph of brothers Zane and Romer Grey. In hunting attire the two men are standing in a forested area with two black bears from their hunting trip. One of the bears is on the ground, the other suspended from a tree. Though an accomplished writer on many subjects Zane Grey is probably best remembered for his novels of the American West. He was a highly outspoken and influential conservationist. His main motivation behind the writing of his western novels was to spark interest in America’s great wilderness areas and National Parks, and thus he hoped to encourage others to preserve them. The period of his writing coincides with when many of the great National Parks we now take for granted were only coming into being. Without the influence of men like Grey one wonders how much lesser our modern America might have been. Romer Grey was known to frequently accompany Zane on his excursions out west and on his fishing excursions around the world. While also being a published author of books on game fishing and hunting, Romer was primarily a noted photographer. A fact which may explain the excellent quality and composition of this picture.

BIG GAME HUNTING IN CENTRAL AFRICA

London:: Cecil Palmer. (1930). First edition. Considered one of the better books on elephant hunting. Buckley hunted in Uganda--where the large tuskers were then known to exist in good numbers--and in the Congo. Portrait frontispiece and 23 photo-illustrations on 13 plates. The book is very good in original brown cloth, in a lightly soiled dust jacket with some minor edge chipping, touch of creasing, scant quarter-inch chipped from head and tail of spine, and spine a litle darkened.         Japan and Jazz

Shiba, Tokyo: The Taiheiyosha Press,, 1930. Sketches and Essays on Japanese City Life. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles and pictorial design across spine and boards in black, patterned endpapers. Illustrations within the text. Contemporary ownership signature to front blank and title page. Spine rolled and tanned, cloth lightly rubbed and dulled with some faded areas and small spots, occasional light spotting to contents. First edition, first impression of this rare collection of essays on Japan's uneasy embrace of modernism during the 1920s and 30s. The author, Setsuo Uenoda, was a sort of ambassador between the west and east, a proponent of the new styles in art and music which he hoped to incorporate with the best of Japanese tradition. He wrote for the English language periodical The Japan Advertiser, where these essays first appeared, and may have had contact with Ezra Pound. The essays collected here cover topics such as the nightlife of the Ginza district; cultural attitudes of the young, particularly the development of flapper culture; the Shibui Konomi aestheticism; jazz in Japan and the hits being produced by Japan's version of Tin Pan Alley; Japanese popular songs; Christmas in Japan, the art of bonsai; the Samisen musical revival, the modernisation of the Geisha, and superstitions of old Japan. An attractive copy of an uncommon and fascinating collection.

The Master of Hestviken: The Son Avenger [Signed / Underskrevet]

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1930. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/very good. A Very Good + copy of the first American edition, first printing (fading at spine extremities, modest soiling to the bottom of the page block), in a Very Good dust jacket (small chips and tears, with a larger chip to the top of the rear panel -- not affecting any lettering, toning to spine and to panel and flap edges), SIGNED BY SIGRID UNDSET on the half-title; the final book in Sigrid Undset's tetralogy, "The Master of Hestviken" (originally published in two volumes -- "Olav Audunssøn i Hestviken" and "Olav Audunssøn og Hans Børn" -- each of which contained two of the four novels). The "Master" was Olav Audunssøn, owner of Hestviken, a fictional medieval farm inspired by a summer cottage where Undset once resided. Sigrid Undset won the 1928 Nobel Prize in Literature "principally for her powerful descriptions of Northern life during the Middle Ages".. and the Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy, along with The Master of Hestviken tetralogy, were responsible for her winning the Prize. Signed copies of Sigrid Undset's works are rather uncommon. A Very Good or better copy of one of the Nobel Prize-winner's important works, SIGNED BY SIGRID UNDSET. Quite Scarce.

Oeuvre originale
