Photograph album showing aircraft, students, and facilities at the Curtis-Wright Technical Institute at the Grand Central Air Terminal in Glendale, California

Glendale, California, 1930. Album. Very good. This 12" x 8" album contains over 115 original photographs (most 4.5" x 2.75") and real photo postcards. All of the images are glued to the pages. About 100 of the photos show training, racing, experimental, military, and commercial aircraft; the remainder show students and school facilities. The contents are in nice shape; the album cover has some wear. The Curtis-Wright Institute, established in 1929, was one of the first professional aviation schools in the United States, and Glendale's Grand Central Air Terminal was the first, best, and most important airport in the American west, and the aircraft images are testament to the California's burgeoning aircraft industry. Almost any of the aircraft photographs in this album would be considered a highlight. Some are: Military (a flight-line of Boeing P-23 Pursuit airplanes, Fokker YB-8 Bomber, Douglas 0-38F Observation, what appears to be a Boeing YB-9 Bomber, Curtis P-3 Hawk, Curtis P-5 Superhawk Pursuit, Douglas XA2 Attack, Northrup A-17 attack, Sheldon Crusader Streamline Cabin Plane, etc.), Racing and Experimental (Folkerts Special Speed King SK-3, Miles Atwood Racer Special, Brown B-2 "Miss LA" Racer, Gee Bee Sportsers, Rider R-1 Racer, Gilmore Record Breaker Keith-Rider R-3, Rider R-4 Firecracker, Hansom Baby-Bullet, Wedell Williams Red Lion Racer, etc.), Commercial (Focke-Wulf Stosser Air Transport, Douglas DC 1-3s, Vultee V-1 Airliner, Boeing Model 40 Mail Plane, Douglas DF Flying Boat, Douglas Dolphin Flying Boats, etc.), Kellet K-3 Autogyro NC12691 (the same autogyro used in the movie, It Happened One Night),Amelia Earhart's famous Lockheed Model 10 Electra R16020 (there is no "N" in the aircraft number so this photograph must have been taken before she seriously considered flying it outside of the United States.), and more. A series of images showing an American Airlines Curtiss T032C Condor being destroyed in a runway fire-explosion on 27 September 1937. There several images of students at their drafting tables, one of an Asian-American using a slide-rule. There are two 8" x 10" class photos of students in front of the institute. Some of the online images are slightly blurred because the album would not sit flush on the scanner bed.

Théo Schmied points out the natural happiness of the interconnection between his father's cultural tendencies and art of the book and the world of the Near East as it is filtered by the 'inspired' Mardrus translations. throwing light on the the two fundamental aesthetic coordinates we need in order to understand how the details are made subordinate by the elegant decorative unity expressed by the plates, that is, the purity of the Egyptian graphic art and the will of the Italian primitives. The layout shows either a text harmoniously arranged in respect of double and single plates of various size, or a text framed by rules forming a variety of geometrical patterns and decorated by bout de lignes in sienna. The illustrations mainly show subdued and delicate pastel colours.' - Nasti Carteret Illustrés IV, p. 264; Buyssens, no 42; Nasti B15. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Moby Dick or The Whale

Chicago: The Lakeside Press,, 1930. 3 volumes, large quarto. Original black cloth, bevelled boards, titles and vignettes to spines in silver, abstract design and volume numbers within simple frame to front boards in silver, top edges black, others uncut. Housed in the original aluminium slipcase. Wood-engravings throughout by Rockwell Kent. Very light marking to covers, spines very slightly faded. Slight offsets from illustrations, as usual. Slight scuffing to slipcase. An excellent copy. First Rockwell Kent edition, limited to 1,000 sets. With a pencilled presentation inscription by Rockwell Kent to the front free endpaper of volume 1: 'To Jerry M. Stepanek by Rockwell Kent'. This is one of the finest editions of Melville's masterpiece and one of the great American illustrated books of the 20th century. In 1926, Rockwell Kent (1882–1971), then just beginning to establish his fame as an artist, was approached by R. R. Donnelley and Sons to illustrate a new edition of Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast. Kent demurred, suggesting Moby Dick instead. Kent was given complete freedom to design and illustrate the three-volume set. The resulting work has been hailed as a masterpiece of 20th-century book illustration and credited with reviving public interest in a sublime but difficult novel.

        [BASHKIR LANGUAGE]

Bulat. Allasyz Kuly [i.e. Godless Humor]. Ufa: Bashgiz, 1930. 93 pp. 18x12,5 cm. Original illustrated wrappers showing two laughing faces tearing up the page from Quran. Owner's signature on the title page, minor rusting of the staples, tear of the rear wrapper, couple of spots in the texts, otherwise very good. Very rare. One of 5000 copies printed. In Bashkir language. In pre-Revolutionary times Islam was a leading religion of the region of Bashkiria. The fight against the religion started by Soviet state targeted Bashkiria as well. It's known that in the early 1920s 2414 mosques were active in the republic while by 1934 the number dropped to 323. The party was creating the 'anti-religious' clubs over the republic, called 'The friends of Bezhbozhnik magazine'. Usually those groups didn't differ muslims from christians but this particular publication has targeted Islam. It contains poems and feuilletons ridiculing the clergy and the followers of the religion. The book has been printed in latin characters, this version of Bashkir script existed for only 10 years, from 1930 to 1940. Traditionally from the Middle Ages Bashkir people used Arabic graphics for their language, but by the 1920s this script was created, using Janalif (a unified in 1926 script for all Turk languages of the Union). In 1939 the decision was made to change all the scripts of Soviet languages to Cyrillic characters, and in haste a new Bashkir script was created that remains till today.

        David Golder

Horace Liveright, Inc New York 1930 - First Edition. Sugar designed dustjacket. One of only two novels by this author to be published in the United States during her lifetime. "A business man belonging to that international and shady world of casinos - that of Biarritz in this instance - condemned to make money ceaselessly and in spite of himself by his family and by force of circumstances. His character, that of his wife Gloria, and of their daughter Joyce, are brilliantly presented from the word 'go'. The ignominious use which his women make of him, the disgust which this Jew, sure of his power, comes to feel for life, for men and for money." Nemirovsky was a French novelist who died at the age of 39 in Auschwitz, Nazi Germany-occupied Poland. She was arrested by the Nazis for being classified as a Jew under the racial laws, which did not take into account her conversion to Roman Catholicism. Némirovsky is now best known as the author of the unfinished Suite Française, two novellas portraying life in France between 4 June 1940 and 1 July 1941, the period during which the Nazis occupied Paris. These works are considered remarkable because they were written during the actual period itself, and yet are the product of considered reflection, rather than just a journal of events, as might be expected considering the personal turmoil experienced by the author at the time. Near Fine but for modest stain to top page edge, in near Very Good price-clipped dustjacket, top spine end chipped, closed tear at lower spine area, tiny chips and wear at edges. 0.0 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Two original costume studies in pencil and watercolors, signed

[Berlin], 1930. Two fine original watercolor and pencil drawings, on card stock, measuring 13 × 8.5 cm, tipped to black colored paper. Both drawings with Masiutin's estate stamp, one additionally signed in pencil and dated "193?" (illegible). Very good. Two original watercolor drawings by the Russian artist Vasilii Masiutin, most likely produced during the 1930s, when Masiutin occasionally designed costumes and sets for theatre performances in his Berlin exile. Masiutin (1884-1955, also Masjutin), whose early work blended symbolism, the grotesque, and even surrealism, was occasionally referred to as the Russian Goya. He was active in a range of media, including lithograph and woodcut, as well as producing original drawings and paintings. After 1921, he emigrated and settled in Berlin, where he collaborated with numerous Russian emigre publishers, such as "Neva" and "Gelikon," as well as illustrating many German translations of Russian classics. While largely unknown in Russia until recently, he is now being rediscovered an increasingly the subject of exhibitions and publications.

Nos. Opera v 3-kh aktakh po N. V. Gogoliu. Libretto E. Zamiatina, G. Ionina, A. Preisa i D. Shostakovicha [The Nose: an opera in three acts based on N. V. Gogol'. Libretto by E. Zamyatin, G. Ionin, A. Preis and D. Shostakovich]

Leningrad: Gosudarstvennyi Malyi Opernyi Teatr, 1930. Small octavo (17 × 12.5 cm). Original staple-stitched printed wrappers; 12, [3] pp. Wrappers very lightly worn; spine fold a bit rubbed; faint private stamp inside rear wrapper. Rare souvenir booklet distributed during the premiere of Shostakovich's opera The Nose (marked "not for sale"). The opera was produced by Nikolai Smolich, with artist V. V. Dmitriev and conductor Samuil Samosud. Shostakovich wrote the libretto with Georgii Ionin, Aleksandr Preis, and Evgeny Zamyatin. The booklet contains a preface by the Artistic-Political Council, which carefully justifies the opera's musical complexity to proletarian viewers - an important step given the controversial responses to the opera even before its premiere. A brief statement of Shostakovich's aims follows, then two short articles by the critic Ivan Sollertinskii and the stage designer. The final leaf is a feedback form, to be filled out and submitted by the viewers. First begun in 1927, when Shostakovich was only twenty-one, The Nose was the composer's first opera. His turn to the nineteenth-century writer Gogol (and, in part, Dostoevsky) was controversial: "the opera was harshly criticized by the proletarian wing for its avoidance of a Soviet theme, its musical complexity, and its inaccessibility to the masses" (Laurel E. Fay, Shostakovich: A Life, 55). The present brochure clearly attempts, as much as possible, to counter these accusations. Shostakovich had enough sympathizers to complete the project and the opera premiered on January 18, 1930. It was halted after sixteen perfomances, and as a result of the intensifying campaign against the performer it would not be performed again in the Soviet Union until 1974. Nevertheless, "Shostakovich was inordinately fond of his first opera; he judged people by whether they were 'for' or 'against' it" (Fay 56). The booklet is presumably also one of the last official mentions in Soviet print of Zamyatin. By the late 1920s, the author of the famous dystopian novel "We" was constantly attacked in the press and from 1930-1988 his writing was not published. In 1931, after petitioning Stalin himself, he was granted permission to emigrate. KVK, OCLC show only the copy at the Slonimsky Collection at the Library of Congress.

Novye poety Frantsii v perevodakh Iv. Tkhorzhevskogo [Recent French poets in translation by Iv. Tkhorzhevskii]

Paris: Knizhn. Delo, 1930. Large octavo (24 × 18.5 cm). Original blue decorative wrappers by Boris Grosser; 193, [2] pp. Signed and inscribed by the author to a fellow translator on the front flyleaf (Sablina). Wrappers lightly worn, edges rubbed; some fading and loss of spine strip at ends; internally very good. A monumental collection of French poetry in Russian translation, featuring the work of over seventy French poets of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, prepared and with a preface by Ivan I. Tkhorzhevskii, Russian emigre poet and translator. Among the many poets included are Verlaine, Rimbaud, Maeterlinck, Claudel, Gide, Proust, Apollinaire, Jean Cocteau, Paul Valery, and Valery Larbaud. Tkhorzhevsky's translations were far from universally appreciated. The poet Vladislav Khodasevich was reputed to have quipped about his translation of the Rubaiyat: "I had a terrible nightmare. I dreamed that I was a Person poet and that Tkhorzhevsky was translating me" (Karlinsky 315). And Vladimir Nabokov, in a letter to Gleb Struve, ridiculed Tchorzhevsky's translation of Rimbaud's "The Drunken Boat" for his unwarranted additions (such as a captain of the Russian intelligentsia). Wrappers designed by Boris N. Grosser (1889-1982), a French Jewish artist of Russian birth who illustrated numerous books published by Russian emigres with his distinctive woodcut designs. After studying with Bilibin, Grosser continued his training in Munich and Paris. After 1918, he lived in Odessa and in 1920 he emigrated, settling in Paris after 1921. He collaborated with numerous publishing houses in Paris, Berlin, and Holland, illustrating the works of Ivan Bunin, Vladimir Nabokov and many others. Grosser remains an understudied part of Russian book design and illustration abroad. One of 500 copies printed. Not in Savine; not at the Russian State or National Library.

Grosset & Dunlap, New York 1930 - Pee-Wee Harris #13. The last of the Pee-Wees and an elusive book to find in jacket. Book is in vg condition with some edgewear and a little soil. The former owner has clipped out a list of Pee-Wee titles and taped it to the ffep. He (his name is in pencil on ffep, so I know his gender) didn't clip it off of this dj however. I'm doing 2 scans of the dust jacket only, so you can see exactly what you're getting. It's not perfect but it's pretty darned nice. The nicest one I've seen. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

THE WORKS OF GEORGE BERNARD SHAW: 33 volumes, EACH Volume Inscribed to Shaw's Favorite Actress Lillah McCarthy

Constable & Company Limited [1930-1938], London - Laurence A198a. The Best Edition of Shaw's Works, copy #740 of 1025 copies complete in 33 volumes in the original dustwrappers collecting his writings from his first novel-- IMMATURITY--to his famous plays--PYGMALION, MAJOR BARBARA, etc.--through and beyond his winning of the Nobel Prize in 1925. EACH of the 33 volumes is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author to actress Lillah McCarthy. The first volume, as are most of the others, is INSCRIBED "This one is Lillah's/G. Bernard Shaw." Volume 10, MAN AND SUPERMAN, is INSCRIBED: "This volume is very specially/dedicated to the/Creatrix/of/Ann Whitefield, who will/always be my/Ann Whitefield/Lillah McCarthy/G. Bernard Shaw 12th Dec. 1931." McCarthy became the leading lady in 1905 at The Court Theatre, managed by Granville Barker, her future husband, and financed by Shaw. Her first role was as Nora in Shaw's JOHN BULL'S OTHER ISLAND. She then caused a sensation as Ann Whitefield in his masterpiece MAN AND SUPERMAN, earning Shaw's respect for her talents so much so that he tailored the part of Jennifer in THE DOCTOR'S DILEMMA especially for her. When McCarthy married Barker, who played the male lead opposite her in several of Shaw's plays, Shaw was upset as he felt they were not a good pair. Though the couple successfully produced a number of other Shaw plays in the following years, Shaw was proven correct when Barker left her for another woman. McCarthy later married Sir Frederick Keeble, and the final volume of this set is INSCRIBED by Shaw "to Lady Keeble (Lillah)." Near Fine in Very Good dustwrappers. Sensational set [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
