Alcune piccole abrasioni sulla cartella, leggere bruniture e qualche piccola mancanza su alcune delle tavole. [M244] Opera completa, così come pubblicata. E.-A. Seguy fu pittore e illustratore. Poco si sa della sua vita, tranne che fu attivo a Parigi. La sua arte si ispirava al mondo della natura, agli animali, alle farfalle, agli insetti, ai fiori, alle foglie, ai cristalli ecc. Fu uno dei pochi artisti che riuscirono a operare una sintesi tra l'Art Nouveau e l'Art Déco. Durante la sua carriera ha prodotto undici album di tavole, tutte magistralmente colorate au pochoir, e le sue creazioni vennero  spesso prese a modello da artigiani-artisti che le utilizzarono per realizzare oggetti, tessuti, tappeti, arazzi e carte da parati di altissima qualità. Proprio per questo motivo (le singole tavole prese come modello) gli album completi sono di difficilissimo reperimento. Il Pochoir era una tecnica di coloritura, interamente manuale, utilizzata soprattutto in Francia nei primi decenni del Novecento. Una volta creato il modello della tavola da colorare venivano realizzati degli stampini, o maschere normografiche, ritagliati e sagomati al loro interno. Si trattava di sagome ottenute utilizzando diversi materiali come cartoncino impermeabilizzato con paraffina o sottilissime lamine di rame o zinco e se ne realizzava una per ogni colore necessario. La coloritura vera e propria avveniva sovrapponendo lo stampino sulla tavola da colorare e stendendo una mano di colore, a spruzzo o a pennello, in modo che il colore stesso aderisse solo sulle parti a vista senza intaccare le altre. Per la coloritura di una sola tavola potevano essere necessari fino a cento diversi passaggi, operazione che richiedeva notevole perizia ed abilità. In quel periodo in  Francia sorsero veri e propri Ateliers specializzati  che, operando in collaborazione con i più importanti Editori, realizzarono, nel campo dell'illustrazione del libro,  dei veri e propri gioielli di arte tipografica. -

        Greenwich Village: Types, Tenements & Temples

      New York: Self-Published, 1930. Limited to 26 copies. Hardbound. Internally VG, covers are weakly attached and spine cloth getting weaker due to weight of covers with embedded zinc etching plates (one in each). Paper-covered thick cardboard covers with a thin and deteriorating cloth spine. Front cover upper right has an etching which represents the title of the book. No printing along spine. Four preliminary sheets, each an etching, followed by 22 signed etchings, and finishing up with an unsigned etching as the endsheet. The Limitation page (etched) has written in ink that this is copy 25 of a total of 26. A laid-in typed sheet (dated Lime Rock, Ct. in 1937) states that the original intent was to print 50 copies of this, the third state of the book. However, it goes on to say the zinc plates began to deteriorate and the edition was halted at 26. Each inside cover has a plate embedded into it. The front cover has an architectural scene, and the rear cover has a dancing scene. All 22 of the artist image etchings is signed. Weber, p. 31: "An interesting pictorial presentation of 'the Montmartre of America,' an area in Manhattan long frequented by authors, artists, and students." The limitation leaf describes Greenwich Village thus: "A hodge-podge of tumble-down tenements, rickety architectural relics, with a great deal of modernity just minced together. Mushroom tea taverns & dancing dens have found lodgement in the attics & cellars." One of the most charming and spirited of Wall's productions.

[um 1930]. 48:33,5 cm Konvolut von 18 großformatigen, im Art Deco-Stil gestalteten Entwürfen für wohl großflächige Terrazzo-Böden (eventuell auch in komibinierter Ausführung mit Mosaikflächen gedacht). Die mit Bleistift skizzierten, mit kräftig aufgetragenen, leuchtenden Gouache-Farben und Deckweiß ausgemalten und schließlich mittels einer aufgespritzten Schicht finisierten Entwürfe zeichnen sich durch attraktive Farben- und Formenkompositionen, sowie detailierte Ausführung aus. Jedes dieser wahrscheinlich im Entwurfsbüro einer Werkstatt oder an einer Schule entstandenen Entwürfe ist ein Unikat. Es dominieren geometrische Formen, die Motivwahl zitiert verschiedene künstlerische Traditionen (mesoamerikanische, keltische, klassizistische). An Ecken und Rändern teils mit etwas Farbabrieb, die Ecken zum Teil mit Knickspuren, insgesamt gut erhaltener Satz dieser außergewöhnlich schmucken Mustersammlung.

      Tallinna Eesti Kirjastus-Ühisus (Estonian Joint Publishing), Tallinn 1930 - Estonian language. Octavo 14 x 20 cm. Weight 210 gr. Wrappers, 121 [1] pp., plus frontispiece leaf. The Book is in Near Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Some foxing spots on the cover and on the frontispiece leaf edges, little wrapped cover corners, light rubbing to the front cover edges, inside is perfect preservation (please see images). The motif of "the world is open" gave title to the present poetry collection. Here the author interferes in 20th century life, displaying a global grasp, and embracing the whole world (trains, stations, buses, aeroplanes and other contemporary technological achievements). Poetry is constantly on the move, man rushes from city to city, from the town to the open world: London, Moscow, Leningrad, Venice, Paris. Describing the relations between man and city that bring about a change of mentality, poet makes use of images from nature, especially poeticising small towns (e.g., "Cycle of a Small Town"). An original nature verse emerges where the old opposition between country/nature and town is clearly felt. Poet is more open and stands closer to nature (e.g., the cycle "Anno Domini"). His usage of words and form indicates an expressionist background. Using new (modern) means of expression, he showed the novelty of his thinking. Barbarus employed unusual comparisons and images, the choice and usage of words is highly uncommon, and this very process made him the conscious creator of Estonian urban poetry. Johannes Barbarus (real name Johannes Vares) (1890-1946) was Estonian greatest modernist poet, doctor and politician. His style of verses varied greatly during his career as a poet. His early works followed the trends of French expressionism and Cubism, later poetry took more realistic turn. Though he didn’t directly participate in politics in the beginning, his left-wing thinking undoubtedly influenced his work. He was a radical socialist and was impressed with the initial ideals of the Soviet Union. His travel experiences also played a role in his worldview and subsequently his writing. Brilliant avant-garde constructivist cover design and frontispiece expressionist woodcut print are created by Estonia's most important avant-garde artist Jaan Vahtra (1882–1947). Among all his other achievements he recognized as the man who brought Cubism to Estonia. Most of all valued according to outstanding works in the field of graphics. Shaw's first novel Immaturity was published for the first time in this collected edition. "The Collected edition consisted of thirty volumes, published between 26 July and 24 February 1932. Three additional volumes were published, one on 7 July 1934 and two on 1 July 1938." This retrospective presents Leighton's work in chronological order and inludes original woodblock prints of work done as book illustrations and previously only published as reproductions. Leighton is considered one of the most gifted woodcut artists of her time. First edition (first printing). A near fine copy (decorative bookplate on inside front cover) in a dust jacket with a number of tears, particularly to the rear panel. This is copy 24 of 450 signed and numbered by Leighton.

Bound in the original blue cloth lettered in gilt on spine, publisher's device stamped in blind on lower board, FIRST ISSUE DUST-JACKET (priced 7/6), some spotting and browning, dust-jacket a little worn at extremities and repaired with tape on verso at head of spine, some browning to spine and section of lower panel, collector's bookplate. Greene became deeply disenchanted with his second novel, and as such the book appears in no other editions or reprints than the present example and the first American edition. According to Wobbe, the author remarked that "the title... suggested to him by Clemence Dane, is the only part of the novel he approves of".

        Poema par ormani (Poem about a Cabman)

      Zelta grauds (Gold Grain), Riga 1930 - Latvian language. Enlarged format. Octavo 20 x 24 cm. Weight 100 gr. Wrappers, 48 pp., including 3 sheets of illustrations tables. The book is in Near Fine condition, without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Two soft creases across front cover corners, very light stain on the bottom left corner of front. Three amazing ink drawings for the book considered very successful work of Romans Suta. The poet’s ode to the cabman and the partying and entertaining city in which he drove his cart proved to be close in mood to the artist. That is seen in the many cafes, bars and saloons which he drew. Caks's poem depicts Riga's typical cabman, who became gradually replaced by cars. In the second half on 1920s Riga achieved progress in mechanization, jazz, outlandish schlagers, fashion, artistic movements etc. Poet portrays going away silhouette of modern city, which has undergone entire era of changes. In this poem, as in early works, poet swim strongly against the tide, he is against the generally accepted ranges of society and don't evaluate changes positively (here he takes cabman's side). As a poet, Aleksandrs Caks (1901-1950) was a legend, the most influential poet among the Latvian modernists. Caks' poetry is notable for its urban setting and modernity which gave it a strong contrast with the established pastoral and folkloric traditions in Latvian literature. His verses was devoted to Riga’s restless, throbbing life, including topics and characters that had hardly been featured before — the city nightlife, horse taxi drivers (cabmen), shop-windows, streets and boulevards, poverty- stricken suburbs. He is a world-level poet whose works are endowed with all human feelings, a vast scope of emotions and a passionate love. Aleksandrs Caks’ verse heralded the origination of the modern Latvian poetry by proposing new aesthetic principles and poetic forms. The format characteristics of his verse - rhyme, rhythm and imagery - have influenced succeeding generations of poets. Caks poetry is full of extravagant comparisons and metaphors. He keeps the reader riveted by the vivid scenery, the wealth of personifications, wild imagination and expressivness of his language. The lyrical strand of Latvian poetry is not absent even from Caks's most modernist, futurist poems. Artist Romans Suta (1896-1944) considered as outstanding representative of classical modernism in Latvia's art history. In the late 1910s, Romans Suta created artworks with simple forms and heightened expression. He often depicted Latvians, forged by war and their lives as refugees. By the first half of the 1920s, artist increasingly turned to the styles of Constructivism and Cubism. Very popular became his works in the field of graphic art - series of indian ink drawings which depict inviolable components of an urban environment, along with wine lovers, card players, musicians and dancers. Narrow strips of sunning to spine cloth at ends, light rubbing to cloth at extremities and light abrasions to black topstains. Pages toned and with offsetting from illustrations. Acetate wrappers are wrinkled and shrunken with age, as is typical, and show a bit of chipping and edge wear, with some separation starting between the acetate and a paper flap on both volumes II and III; acetate on volume II with light staining.       London: Constable & Company, Ltd, 1930. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good +. Rumbold, Gilbert. 12 mo - over 6.75" to 7.75" tall, 292 pps. A cultural icon and the foundation for all great modern bartending books. Harry Craddock (1876-1963), British by birth, had emigrated to the US in 1897 but moved back to Britain with the advent of prohibition, landing a job at the American Bar at the Savoy Hotel, London, in 1920. His bartending guide, a collection of 750 recipes (several of which he is credited for creating) was published in 1930 and remains in print today. This copy is a first printing, with the date on the title page and before the publishers inserted the errata slip modifying the "Bacardi Special Cocktail" on page 25 to simply "Bacardi Cocktail". We believe the UK edition was published prior to the US, as there is an advertisement for the book dated November 23, 1930 in the London Observer while the ealiest mention found in the US is a review in the Hartford Courant dated December 7, 1930. This copy with an inserted ad spread for Booth's Gin ("Welcomed by the Gallants of 1740") as a tipped in sheet between the half-title and title pages. ***DESCRIPTION: Decorated paper boards with an Art Deco design, black cloth spine, pictorial endpapers, 2-page ad spread for Booth's Gin tipped into the book between the half-title and the title pages, 1930 date on the title page, decorations and illustrations throughout by Gilbert Rumbold (as late as the 1950s, he was living in Broadstairs, continuing to sketch drawings of local scenes that were sold in gift shops around the town, despite having lost an arm in a train accident); duodecimo size (just under 7.5" tall), pagination: half-title page with Aldrich quote on verso (1-2), inserted ad spread (i-iv), title page (3) through 286 includes three pages with only blank lines at the end, page 287 a vignette of a haughty woman peering through a lorgnette off to the side, followed by the printer's statement (printed by Lowe & Brydone, London), (288). ***CONDITION: We are rating as good plus due to overall wear to the binding; there is some light rubbing to the front board, general fairly minor edgewear, wear to the head and tail of the spine including light loss of the cloth, there is a bend in the spine running vertically down the center, and the gilt lettering on the spine has rubbed off; both hinges are tender although the endpapers have not cracked, and there is some offsetting to the endpapers from the inks on the pages opposite.
