[140 photographs of Travel in the Potosi Mining Area].

54 leaves, images mounted rectos only. Double post-holed Heinn Co. large-format photo album with metal spine and pebbled cloth covered boards. Illus. with b/w photos. Most photos are 3 x 4 inch format (three 8" x 10" in sepia enlargements) covering a variety of subjects, mainly from near the city of Potosi in Bolivia, which had been built close to its 'Silver Mountain' - mined since the days of the Spanish conquest for silver and other valuable metals; images of settlements and small rail hubs, areas that are used for llama and mule loading and commercial transport; dwellings of native peoples, including caves and adobe, shanties; automobile travel with several views of treacherous roadways and terrain, one with auto stuck in the mud to its axles, breakdowns, makeshift stream-fording. While not specifically identified, it is most likely this album was the record of either an engineering survey team or a geological expedition, as there are several images of men examining charts, with surveying instruments set up; tent camping 'on the trail', many views of the rugged landscape and rocky paths and routes; roadways, several images of railroad tracks and rolling stock; waterways and retaining walls, reinforced roadbeds, culverts, bridges including a suspension bridge; several shots taken in the city of Potosi including street scenes. An excellent glimpse of the harsh conditions in the Potosi region and the difficulties of transportation, travel and survival, that a population living and working at an average elevation of over 13, 000 feet, faced. Photographs generally very good, a few loose, mounted on clean black stock, in much worn and chipped covers.

Eliot was right in saying that American fiction took its first step forward since Henry James in The Great Gatsby, then one should be free to say that As I Lay Dying, which makes Fitzgerald's technique seem wooden and creaky, was a tremendous stride forward, making possible levels of awareness, a sense of variety, and a saturation of reality that would have delighted Henry James" (O'Connor, The Tangled Fire of William Faulkner).         Sezione di Spilimbergo Scuola Corale

Opera Nazionale Dopolavoro (Spilimbergo, Italy: Opera Nazionale Dopolavoro, c. 1930s). Quarto. (30)ff. scrapbook belonging to a member of the Spilimbergo Choral School, and containing eight hand-tinted photographs, a roster of members, mimeographed sheets with lyrics to songs and a guide to a folk dance, and hand-written sheet music. One photograph shows the entire group in folkloric attire. The other photographs show couples dancing; most demonstrate specific steps to the furlana, a courtship folk dance. The choral roster in the front of the book lists the name of each member, his or her choral part and occupation. The Spilimbergo Scuola Corale was part of the Opera Nazionale Dopolavoro (OND), which was formed by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini in cooperation with fascist trade unions in 1925. The OND provided recreational and cultural activities for industrial workers and was intended to compete with Socialist cultural organizations. The OND’s activities were popular among workers, but it was never a successful tool for Fascist indoctrination; as such, the songs in this scrapbook appear to be more sentimental and folkloric than propagandistic. In slate blue paper wrappers, with the title calligraphed in black ink to front cover. The mimeographed pages bear the official stamp of the OND and the choral school. Repair to spine and some edgewear, else about fine.

New York: Grosset & Dunlap,, [1930]. Octavo. Original orange cloth, titles to spine and upper board in black. With the dust jacket. Very lightly rubbed at extremities, spine slightly faded, contents lightly toned. A beautiful copy in the exceptional dust jacket. This New York edition was produced to cash in on the success of the stage play. Dracula was first adapted for the English stage by Hamilton Deane in 1924, the adaption being authorized by Stoker's widow. Deane had originally intended to play the title role himself, but in the event opted for the role of Van Helsing. This production toured England for three years before settling in London. In 1927 the play was brought to Broadway by Horace Liveright, who hired John L. Balderston to revise the script for American audiences. The American production starred Bela Lugosi in his first major English-speaking role, with Edward Van Sloan as Van Helsing; both actors reprised their roles in the 1931 film version, which drew on the Deane-Balderston play. The rear flap of dust jacket has printed instructions to "Preserve this wrapper for future reference", and a list of Grosset and Dunlap publications on the verso, indicating how by this date printed dust jackets were no longer treated as disposable wrappers to be discarded before sale.

n.p. c. 1930 n.p., [c. 1930]. Image approx. 7-1/2 x 6 inches. Pencil and watercolor. Matted . The fantastic fairy shop, set in a dark, mysterious grove of tall trees. William M[itcheson] Timlin was born in Northumberland, England, and studied art in Newcastle before following his parents to South Africa, where he completed his studies in art and architecture. He then practiced as an architect, designing a number of major public buildings in Kimberley; at the same time he worked as an artist, producing paintings, etchings and pastels of conventional subjects, in addition to the watercolor fantasies for which is he best known. He also wrote stories and music, and did periodical illustrations. In 1923 he published "The Ship that Sailed to Mars", which has become a fantasy classic. His "The Building of the Fairy City" remained unfinished at his death, apart from a few elegant and imaginative watercolors, such as the one offered here
