Iron Man [Signed by Burnett, Dust Jacket Signed by its Designer Edna Reindel]

New York: The Dial Press [Lincoln MacVeagh], 1930. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/very good. A Very Good + to Near Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (fading and some spotting to the topstain, tiny rubs to the spine ends and board corners, a few tiny white spots to the boards, spine lettering a bit weakened, slight tide mark to the bottom corner of the rear free endpaper and to the margin corner of the last two pages of text -- but not affecting the text), in a Very Good + dust jacket (slight chipping to the spine ends and panel edges, push to the rear panel's top edge, small tide mark from the rear flap's bottom right corner extending slightly into the rear panel's lower left corner, expected sunning to the spine panel, spine and front panel images show through on the dust jacket's verso), SIGNED BY W. R. BURNETT on the title page AND with the DUST JACKET SIGNED BY EDNA REINDEL, its designer; the second novel by novelist and screenwriter W. R. Burnett, published in the year following publication of his debut novel, "Little Caesar". The novel centers around Kid Mason, a mechanic's helper turned prizefighter, who, after much perseverance, becomes the middle-weight champion. The book provided the basis for the 1931 movie of the same name, starring Lew Ayres, Robert Armstrong, and Jean Harlow, as well as for the 1951 remake starring Jeff Chandler, Evelyn Keyes, and Rock Hudson. The striking dust jacket is signed by its designer Edna Reindel, the noted Surrealist and American Regionalist painter who, during the Depression, was commissioned to create murals and sculptures around the United States. Copies of Iron Man signed by Burnett are not terribly common, and copies signed both by W. R. Burnett and by Edna Reindel are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Very nice copy, SIGNED BY W. R. BURNETT AND SIGNED BY EDNA REINDEL. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

Typed Letter Signed, 4to, on stamped "R.A.F. Mount Batten, Plymouth," stationery, Nov. 7, 1930.

      - Dr. Cooper explains that Lawrence, "seeing two old people in difficulty with a car which wouldn't start, he offered to help them but the handle [hand crank] of the car on a backfire hit him in the wrist & broke it." The incident occurred in March, 1927, near Cranwell, but since Lawrence did not take the needed time to allow the wrist to heal, it never fully recovered. The letter shows LawrenceÕs wit and good humor about his own accident as well as his concern for his good friend, Charlotte Shaw. Lawrence refers to Charlotte Payne-Townshend Shaw, reformer, women's rights advocate and wife of author George Bernard Shaw. Lawrence writes to Charlotte's Shaw's doctor , William Cooper, who took care of Lawrence's broken wrist. In this upbeat letter with a literary reference to American author Henry James, Lawrence gives an update on Charlotte as well as his own injured wrist. At the end, he asks for the cost of the bill which he supposes Charlotte would have paid had she not become indisposed from an accident. In part, "and then the fun began. Dear Cooper was to presume on a very short acquaintance. Dear Dr. Cooper lined you up with a class you probably detest. Dear Mr. Cooper is stiff. So let's begin again. I was going to write just after the occasion; only I was detracked suddenly by the accident to Mrs. Shaw.she is not so long or quite recovered from a scarlet-fever incident at Buxton; (Henry James was the putative parent of that last sentence).she bumps down in Hanover square and will be tied by the leg for more weeks.I had wanted to say thank you for examining me that morning. Mrs. Shaw and I thought of it on the spur of the moment. What you had said was most assuring; as it is not likely to get worse I snap my fingers at it. Half an arm is plenty for one's old age, and I have still and arm and a half. Nevertheless, if fate does bring me to London (No wise man would prophesy anything concerning me) I will attend on you.It has been less painful.but do not flatter your art - it is faith and happiness acting through favorable judgement. Try telling a patient that she or he will get worse, and see it happen! Before Mrs. Shaw I could not discuss finance; she would have felt herself liable for bringing me.My scandalous life of enjoyment is not to be justified, but palliated perhaps, by paying for itself.let me know how much I am in your debt *." The asterisk is actually the "@" symbol and points to another below the signature with the following explanation. "Financially, I mean. Morally I am the assessor, and delighted." In his hand he writes and signs, "Yours T. E. Shaw." With envelope docketed by William Cooper explaining the letter.

        The World in 2030 A.D

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1930. Quarto, with a frontispiece and eight plates; a fine copy in the original black cloth, lettered in crimson. Futurist predictions come true? First edition of this extravagant vision of the future. The first Earl of Birkenhead (1872-1930) was a dashing figure, a 'swashbuckler' and 'ready subject for the caricaturist,' (DNB) who had a lengthy career as Solicitor General, and after 1919, Lord Chancellor. Reading The World in 2030 the knowledge that Birkenhead was drinking himself to death whilst writing comes as little surprise. It is an extraordinary work, displaying the occasional prescience of the unhinged. Amongst a very odd collection of statements about ectogenesis, the unlikelihood of future wars due to trans-national integration, scientific relativism, and the creation of a Florida-style 'playground for all Europe' in the basin of the Sahara, there is the bald announcement that atomic energy will be harnessed, that eugenics will be commonplace and the genes mapped, and that a 'mad dictator, jealous of Western progress, may precipitate a war, which will finally burn up and destroy Western civilisation'. Best of all, advances in television will mean that a busy Englishman will be able to follow 'an Australian test-match'. Accompanying the work are nine futurist plates by E. McKnight Kauffer.

The collection comprises 339 chromolithographed and half-tone colour-printed cards (each ca. 14 x 9 cm) showing garden flowers. Mounted mostly 4 to a page on the black leaves of a contemporary album, bound in black cloth.

A few include background scenes of gardens, buildings or interiors, a half dozen including people (for example, three Dutch children working in a garden). A few of the flowers are clearly reproduced from photographs. More than half the cards appear to belong to two numbered series. Some cards have been slightly trimmed, sometimes with the loss of the name, series number or printer's notice, but most of the cards are in very good condition.

Hector; la novela de ambiente Mexico

Marpha, TX: the author, 1930. Hardcover. 377p., first edition, original wrappers rebound in black leatherette, gilt titles and bands at head and tail, bookmark ribbon bound-in, blank white endpapers replacing the original cover illustration, text in Spanish, very good rebound first edition. In spite of lacking the colorful pictorial covers of the original paper edition this is an attractive copy of a very scarce title. Gram is the pseudonym of David G. Ramirez, a Mexican priest who lived in San Antonio during the Cristero War for a decade starting around 1925. One of the rarest titles in Mexican American literature because of the imprint. We would not be surprised if the imprint were faked, and the book was actually published in northern Mexico, unlike subsequent editions

        My Early Life

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1930. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. This book comes from the personal collection of Churchill's bibliographer, Ronald I. Cohen. This is a collector-worthy copy of the first edition, first printing, first state, first binding state. Originally published in October 1930, My Early Life is Churchill's extremely popular autobiography, covering the years from his birth in 1874 to his first few years in Parliament. One can hardly ask for more adventurous content. These were momentous and formative years for Churchill, including his time as a war correspondent and cavalry officer in theatres as varied as Cuba, northwest India, and sub-Saharan and southern Africa. This time contained a wide range of experiences in Churchill’s life. Not only was he developing as an author, publishing his first books, and making his first lecture tour of North America, but this was also the time of his capture and daring escape during the Boer War, which made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. Churchill would take his seat in Parliament only weeks after the end of Queen Victoria's reign. My Early Life remains one of the most popular and widely read of all Churchill's books. And for good reason, as the work certainly ranks among the most charming and easy to read of his many books. An original 1930 review likened it to a "beaker of Champagne." That effervescent charm endures; a more contemporary writer called it "a racy, humorous, self-deprecating classic of autobiography." To be sure, Churchill takes some liberties with facts and perhaps deceptively lightens or over-simplifies certain events, but this is eminently forgivable and in keeping with the wit, pace, and engaging style that characterizes the book. My Early Life sold very well at the time and has seen a great many editions since, many of them collectible in their own right, but of course a premium attaches to first editions. The challenge for collectors is that the plum colored binding of this edition proved especially susceptible to fading, soiling, and wear; nearly all copies are considerably spine faded. Moreover, the contents are susceptible to heavy spotting and the binding is often cocked. This helps explain why so many first editions of this book have been torn apart and rebound. Finding superior copies in unrestored, original bindings is increasingly challenging. Here then is a noteworthy copy for collectors - an unrestored first edition, first printing, first state, first binding state in excellent condition. Edition, impression, and state are confirmed here by a three-line rather than five-line title on the front cover, a binding in rough texture cloth rather than smooth, and 11 Churchill titles listed on the half-title verso. The cloth binding remains square, tight, and unusually clean, with nicely rounded spine, bright gilt, sharp corners, and virtually no wear. Spine presentation is superior for the edition, with only slight color shift between the covers and spine, which retains quite good color. The sole exterior blemishes are a small whitish mark to the lower front cover and a tiny black dot to the upper front cover below the author's name. The contents match the binding - atypically clean and bright. We find no spotting and no previous ownership marks. Searching for flaws, we can report only slight dust soiling to the top edge. The binding is protected with a fine replica of the original bright plum dust jacket, which is fitted with a removable, archival quality clear cover.  Bibliographic reference: Cohen A91.1.a, Woods/ICS A37(aa), Langworth p.131.

ca. 1930, France - Vintage original 47 x 63" (120 x 160 cm.) grand affichà poster, France. A French stock poster for the Danish comedy team Pat and Patachon, who were popular from 1920 through the 1930s.         LA PLACE EST BONNE [THE PLACE IS GOOD] (1930)

Yvonne Leduc, Marthe Sarbel, Charles Camus, Armand Bernard, dir: Roger Lion; Delightful poster with art by popular humorist illustrator Chaperon Jean for a delightful early talkie short (39 minutes). A comedy of mistaken identity when the Dutilleuls invite his boss for dinner and fire their maid on the same day. When the boss arrives, he mistakes the Mrs. for the maid and she takes on that role, one which she is not prepared for.         HELL HARBOR (1930)

USA 1930 - Vintage original 14 x 36" (36 x 91 cm.) insert poster, USA. Lupe Velez, Jean Hersholt, John Holland, Gibson Gowland, dir: Henry King; Inspiration Pictures/United Artists. The story concerned a girl, abused by her father, who dreams of escaping her dull island life and going to Havana. Promoted at the time as the "first all-talking all outdoor picture." The company went to Florida to film much of the action (rare in those days) and it is distinctive for the excellent cinematography and use of early sound. Henry King spotted the very unusual-looking Rondo Hatton, who was assigned as a reporter to cover the filming. Hatton became a cult figure in such horror films as "The Creeper". Lupe Velez and John Holland share a torrid moment portraying the image on this poster. Paper-backed, NEAR FINE.

        PUTTIN' ON THE RITZ (1930)

USA 1930 - Vintage original 14 x 22" (35 x 56 cm.) window card poster, USA. Harry Richman, Joan Bennett, James Gleason, Aileen Pringle, Lilyan Tashman, dir: Edward Sloman; United Artists. Wonderful jazz age graphics highlight this lively poster for the early musical featuring the songs of Irving Berlin. It was the age old story of a Vaudeville performer who becomes a big success, forgetting the "little people" he knew on his way up. The film also featured songs which star Harry Richman ("The idol of Broadway" as we learn here) wrote. Popular singer as well, Richman would appear in a few films and contribute to the song scores of others. Though the film is extant, the two-strip Technicolor sequences only remain in black-and-white. Paper-backed, exceptionally conserved to address minor internal creasing, with touch-ups to some lettering, displays near to mint, NEAR FINE.

        GRAND PARADE, THE (1930)

USA 1930 - Vintage original 27 x 41" (68 x 102 cm.) one sheet poster, USA. Helen Twelvetrees, Fred Scott, Richard Carle, Marie Astaire, dir: Fred C. Newmeyer; Pathe Exchange. Wonderful stone litho poster for what is believed to be a lost film. Edmund Goulding, well-known director of the 1920s-30s, was also a prolific writer and had started as an actor/playwright and director on the London stage before coming to the U.S. This story was about a minstrel song man who is known as "Come Back" because of his problem with drink. This early talkie, made just after the Stock Market Crash of 1929, was an attempt to explore in film the tragedies of alcoholism. It gave Helen Twelvetrees a grand role in her best weeping tradition: that of a burlesque actress who becomes pregnant, is thrown over for a showgirl and contemplates suicide. Show biz and the romantic triangle are the themes of this poster. On linen, with light touch-up only to blank margins and fold lines, NEAR FINE.
