        Typed letter signed.

San Francisco, March 27, [ca. early 1930s].. Large 4to. 1 p.. To Reginald Poland, Fine Arts Gallery, San Diego, thanking him for his interest in his work and discussing the possibility of an exhibition in San Diego: "[...] I took the matter up with Mr. Rollins of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor and tried to arrange for an exhibition in San Diego. But it was impossible because almost the entire exhibition was loaned and the canvasses had to be returned to the owners. Just before receiving your letter I had promised to send a collection of aquarelles and drawings to the Detroit Institute of Fine Art, which collection will be returned to me shortly. But for my first exhibition in San Diego, these would not be sufficient [...]." He notes that "I expect to return to Mexico soon, to complete my work in the National Palace in Mexico City" and expresses his intent to try to arrange a San Diego exhibition when he returns. - Rivera moved to San Francisco in November 1930 in response to a commission from Timothy L. Pflueger. His work there included a mural for the City Club of the San Francisco Stock Exchange and a fresco for the California School of Fine Art. His mural at the Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes - a recreation of the controversial Rockefeller mural - was completed in 1934. - Folded for mailing, a few pencil erasures in top blank margin, otherwise very good.

Death of a Hero. A Novel.

Paris, Henri Babou and Jack Kathane, 1930.. First unexpurgated edition. 4°. 194, 210 pages. Original paper wrappers in custom-made slipcase. No.31 of 300 numbered copies (the complete edition consisted only of 300 copies). Partly unopened, this absolutely FINE copy is a true collector's item.. When Richard Aldington published his first novel, ironically titled Death of a Hero, in September 1929, he had his English publisher Chatto & Windus include a note on how his manuscript had differed from the printed text. In it he said: "To my astonishment, my publisher informed me that certain words, phrases, sentences, and even passages, are at present taboo in England. I have recorded nothing which I have not observed in human life, said nothing I do not believe to be true. I had not the slightest intention of appealing to any one's salacious instincts.... But I am bound to accept the opinion of those who are better acquainted with popular feelings than I am. At my request the publishers are removing what they believe would be considered objectionable, and are placing asterisks to show where omissions have been made.... In my opinion it is better for the book to appear mutilated than for me to say what I don't believe". (vii) Thus self-righteously, Aldington took his stand against censorship and made his points with asterisks. He was having similar but less severe censorship problems with his American publisher, Covici-Friede. Aldington was not alone in grappling with the suppression of language in 1929, a year that exceeded all other postwar years for published war fiction. [1] On both sides of the Atlantic, three other authors of the most successful and memorable war novels of 1929 had their texts expurgated: Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms, Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front, and Frederick Manning's The Middle Parts of Fortune (better known by the title of the expurgated edition, Her Privates We). The altered texts were just the latest in a growing number of serious works of fiction that tested and protested the limits of acceptable language in the Anglo-American literary communities patrolled by repressive vice societies citing outdated obscenity laws. The noisy clash between iconoclastic early modernist writers and moralistically protectionist censors had been going on noticeably since 1915, when in England, 1,000 copies of D. H. Lawrence's The Rainbow were seized and destroyed under the provisions of the Obscene Publications Act (1875), known as Lord Campbell's Act, and the same year in America, when Theodore Dreiser's The Genius ran afoul of the postal obscenity law (1873), known as the Gomstock Law, and was banned in Boston, New York, and Cincinnati. Richard Aldington, an admirer and defender of Lawrence, whom he had known since 1914, could hardly have been astonished in 1929 at the need to repress his own frank language in Death of a Hero. His note, for all its tone of amazed regret, was an ingenuous fabrication. He knew well what had been going on in the war of words. All the banning, burning, seizing, and censoring in the 1920s, under authority of the obscenity laws, forced authors who wanted to be published either to alter their texts under the guidance of sometimes sympathetic but justifiably nervous publishers or to publish unexpurgated texts outside their country, usually in Paris, where expatriate presses after World War I busily flouted conventions. It proved a financially rewarding but bitter choice for authors to bowdlerize their texts for the potential royalties and readership that only established publishing houses could provide. Some writers, including Lawrence and Aldington, published altered texts at home for profit and unexpurgated versions abroad for pride.         Guest book of Alfred Tyrnauer with 61 entries, including prominent Indian nationalists such as V. J. Patel, A. S. Iyengar, Raja Sir Vasudeva Raja of Kollengode, and Subhas Chandra Bose.

Various places, 1930 to 1937.. 38 pp. of which 17 pp. are inscribed. Green velour. Large 8vo.. Alfred Tyrnauer was Viennese correspondent for the International News Service. His guestbook records visits by other journalists, refugees from Germany, and prominent Austrian personalities such as the composer Ernst Krenek and Leopold Wölfling, the former Archduke Leopold Ferdinand (both with calling cards with autogr. address), Elisabeth Windisch-Grätz (the "red archduchess") and her lover (and, much later, husband) Leopold Petznek (twice, once in a group of names and again together on a page of their own), the journalist Sigmund Münz, the philanthropist, writer and pedagogue Genia Schwarzwald, the German physician Max Gerson. Other entries are from the author R. H. Markham, AP Berlin correspondent Alvin J. Steinkopf, Council General at Berlin Geo Messersmith and his wife Marion, and presumably Karl Seit, the former mayor of Vienna. - Of special interest are the entries by prominent Indian nationalists. The following signed with poetic quotations: V. J. Patel, A. S. Iyengar, Raja Sir Vasudeva Raja of Kollengode, and Subhas Chandra Bose. Bose wrote out two lines of poetry followed by the explanation "Translated from Bengali by A[u]rubindo Ghosh", and also his address in Calcutta and the date (May 5, 1933). Bose took the road of violent rather passive resistance and during World War II collaborated first with Germany and then with Japan, hoping to force the British out of India. His military venture ended in failure and he disappeared near the end of the war. The circumstances of his death remain mysterious, probably more due to folkloric than historical reasons. Today he competes with Gandhi, a quite different figure, for first place in the state mythology of India. - Page block loose in binding, cover somewhat rubbed, otherwise in good condition.

2 (1 eigenh. und 1 ms.) Briefe mit eh. U.

Wien und Salzburg, o. D. bzw. 14. IV. 1930..

ORIGINAL ART: CHRISTMAS ANGELS

SEWELL,HELEN. ORIGINAL ART: CHRISTMAS ANGELS. Offered here is a large and lovely Sewell original. The visible image measures 10 3/4" wide x 15" high, matted and framed to 17 x 21". The subject is a non religious Christmas scene with 6 little angels circling a glowing candle. One holds a toy rocking horse, another has a toy lamb and one has a basket of apples. Stars in the night sky are twinkling through the curtained window and a few branches of the Christmas tree with decorations are on the side. Done with white paint and pencil in several shades of black and grey on a tan background. The level of detail is amazing. Not dated with no visible signature, but based upon the style this is her early period, circa 1930. Sewell was a highly regarded and prolific American illustrator probably best known as the original illustrator of Laura Ingalls Wilder "Little House" books. This is a truly beautiful piece, very evocative of the season.

        August. Roman.

2 bind i 1. Gyldendal Norsk Forlag, Oslo 1930. Førsteudgaven. 239+256 sider. Orig. halvlæderbind med rig rygforgyldning. Ganske lette brugsspor. Exlibris indsat (Thorkild Hansen)..

Album of Photographs from a Voyage to Africa for a Big Game Safari in the Serengeti,

East Africa, South Africa, circa 1930-1935.: . East Africa, South Africa, circa 1930-1935. Album of photographs from an indulgent voyage to Africa for a big game safari in the Serengeti, sailing and touring in Cape, and a cruise through the Suez Canal, made by about a dozen English men who spared no expense on their overseas adventure. 8vo. Oblong album by Bartons (Birm.) Ltd. with the trademark name Simplico, brown paper boards uniquely bound with clasped posts, measuring approximately 10.5 x 8 inches. Contains 143 sepia photographs mounted onto 22 cardstock leaves. Photographs vary in sizes, the smallest being 1.5x 2.5 inches, and the largest just shy of 3 x 5 inches. Minor creasing to extremities of boards only, otherwise in Very Good Condition. The sequence of the images suggests that this voyage went first to South Africa, where the enthusiastic group enjoys a sailing adventure in what appears to be Saldanha Bay, a natural paradise for the watersport enthusiast still today. From there a grand cruise ship took them around the Cape to Tanzania for the highlight of the voyage, a big-game hunting excursion in the Serengeti guided by Masai hunters, resulting in at least one sizeable cat captured for prosperity. The homeward voyage would entail a cruise around the Horn of Africa and through the Suez Canal In South Africa, the Nama people are photographed in their village, in front of a hut, together with their Western visitors. Evidently being gracious hosts, a young man is seen collecting coconuts for them, and an elder tends to them at the beach. Further images suggest that time was spent at a horse ranch. A newly constructed building bears the date MCMXXIX (1929) above its primary entrance aids in dating the voyage. One photograph is taken in front of an automobile service station of the Vacuum Oil Company (VOCO), originally formed in 1866, essentially taken over by John D. Rockefeller in 1879 and established in Cape Town in 1882, merged into Socony-Vacuum in 1931, operating in 50 countries including East Africa by 1933, and eventually becoming part of the US-based Mobil Corporation. The trophy lioness captured in the Serengeti, hunted and tied to the front of the lorry, is shown in two photographs. A group of Masai people stand together in traditional costume carrying a pastoral wood staffs; a robust man leads the foreigners on a jungle tour, and a very young warrior shows his painted face. (Young Masai warriors will roam the country for a year before taking their place in the community as men.) Much of the Serengeti has been historically known as the wildest place in Africa, inhospitable to most, though traditionally home to the indomitable Masai tribes who cohabitated both peacefully and symbiotically with the region's fiercest of beasts. Its name is derived from the Maasai term "Serengit" meaning "Endless Plains." Prior to the inevitable departure from the African continent, the photographer captures a cruise ship and other immense vessels in the harbour. A view of the Administration building of the former Suez Canal Company and a harbour marketplace in Port Said, an Arab dhow, and a cart burdened camel essentially concludes the volume. The album was made in Birmingham, West Midlands, by a bookbinder in the Bartons family, possibly a descendent of James Barton, eighteenth century watch and clockmaker in Birmingham, which may explain the most unusual and ingenious binding posts in this volume..

A visual and textual discussion of Shochiku's TOKYO THEATRE, a large Western-style building designed for the performance of Kabuki, one of several Kabuki theatres in Tokyo which provided venues for Shochiku's near monopoly of traditional theatre at the time. Interestingly enough, the TOKYO THEATRE was the only one of Shochiku's venues to survive the war and became the center of Kabuki production during the Occupation. The Obayashi Gumi which built the theatre and published this guide, survives today as one of the major contractors in Japan. Very good condition throughout with slight soiling to the covers.

Paris: Hours Press,, [1930]. Paris: Hours Press,, [1930]. Octavo. Original illustrated boards in black and grey by Len Lye, black morocco backstrip, titles to spine gilt. Boards very lightly rubbed, spine just a little faded. Contents unopened. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. Number 85 of 200 hand-set copies signed by the author on the limitation leaf. This charming book of philosophical advice was ostensibly written for the eight-year-old daughter of Robert Graves and Nancy Nicholson, close friends of the author. "Strongly reminiscent of prose by Gertrude Stein (to whom an epigraph is addressed), the letters toss abstractions about in a disarmingly simple fashion" and "suggest both an endorsement and a mockery of Edwardian wisdom that was characteristic of much Modernist thinking" (Library Journal review, 1993).

        A Roving Commission

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1930. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very good. This is Churchill's extremely popular autobiography, covering the years from his birth in 1874 to his first few years in Parliament. Published in England as My Early Life, this is one of the few Churchill first editions for which the U.S. edition bears a different title than the British. Jacketed copies are extremely scarce. Even decent unjacketed copies are unusual. The red-orange cloth binding proved highly susceptible to fading and soiling and the fragile dust jacket proved highly vulnerable to wear and severe fading of the orange color, particularly on the jacket spine. Offered here is an especially fine copy in a very good plus first printing dust jacket. The red-orange binding retains vivid, entirely unfaded color and bright gilt. Notably, there is absolutely no fading whatsoever to the spine. The coarse cloth binding is tight, square, and remarkably clean with virtually no wear or soiling, sharp corners, and bright gilt. The contents are as crisp and bright as any we have seen. Even the page edges, including the untrimmed fore edge, remain bright with no age-toning, soiling, or spotting. The Scribner's "A" on the copyright page confirms a first edition, first printing. The same previous owner name from the year of publication is inked three times within - on the front pastedown, the half-title, and the blank verso of the frontispiece. It is dated "December 25, 1930" (publication was in October 1930) in the half-title gift inscription. The dust jacket is unusually clean and unclipped, still bearing the original $3.50 price on the front flap. Most notable, the spine retains a bright orange panel with only a barely discernible hint of sunning and light scuffing. The only loss is a .625 x .5 inch triangular chip at the upper front hinge. The jacket is crisp apart from a .375 inch strip across the top edge where it was evidently once misfolded and wrinkled. A plausible explanation is that the book was carelessly shelved with the dust jacket protruding from the top of the book. Apart from the top edge wear, this is a stunning example of the first printing dust jacket. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.
