The Testament of Beauty

Oxford - Clarendon Press, 1930. Oxford - Clarendon Press, 1930 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A copy of Robert Bridge's most popular poem, A Testament of Beauty. With tissue-guarded frontispiece. A Testament of Beauty is a discursive work, setting out his understanding of man's nature, spiced with scenes and incidents from his experience and reading. When Oxford University Press published it, just in time for Bridges' eighty-fifth birthday in 1929, they were unprepared for its success. Printings could scarcely keep up with demand, and by 1946 it had sold over 70,000 copies. On 3 June 1929 Bridges was awarded the Order of Merit (DNB)Condition: In a quarter-vellum binding. Externally smart, though a little rubbed. Internally, firmly bound. Ink signature dated 1933 to recto of front free-endpaper. Pages have some light foxing to first and last few pages. Overall: VERY GOOD..

In his day he was equally well-known as social philosopher, teacher, inventor, businessman, and passionate crusader for many social causes" (DAB).

- DSB 8, 546

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1930. Complete including all 14 photographic plates. Sound binding with intact hinges. Clean pages. Light wear to cover but sunned spine. Former owner's name inside front cover. Johnson's inscription on this important dedication copy reads, "For Julius Rosenwald with great admiration and deep regard. James Weldon Johnson / July 10, 1930." Rosenwald was a co-owner of Sears and Roebuck and one of the most generous philanthropists of his age. His Rosenwald Fund built 4,977 schools, 217 teachers' homes, and 163 shop buildings for African-American children in 15 states from Maryland to Texas. Johnson, one of the most influential African-Americans in the first half of the twentieth century, was a famous author, songwriter (he and his brother wrote "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" as well as popular songs like "Under the Bamboo Tree"), educator, lawyer, diplomat, civil rights activist, and a longtime leader in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). In 1929, Rosenwald began to shift his philanthropic focus from funding black education projects to funding creativity in the African-American community by providing a series of large fellowships to black writers, artists, intellectuals, and researchers. Johnson was the first recipient, and he used his grant to publish Black Manhattan, the most important cultural study of African Americans from their first arrival in America to their triumphant achievements in 1920s Harlem. Novye poety Frantsii v perevodakh Iv. Tkhorzhevskogo [Recent French poets in translation by Iv. Tkhorzhevskii]

Paris: Knizhn. Delo "Rodnik" ("La Source"), 1930. Paris: Knizhn. Delo "Rodnik" ("La Source"), 1930. Large octavo (24 x 18.5 cm). Original blue decorative wrappers by Boris Grosser; 193, [2] pp. Signed and inscribed by the author to a fellow translator on the front flyleaf (Sablina). Wrappers lightly worn, edges rubbed; some fading and loss of spine strip at ends; internally very good. A monumental collection of French poetry in Russian translation, featuring the work of over seventy French poets of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, prepared and with a preface by Ivan I. Tkhorzhevskii, Russian emigre poet and translator. Among the many poets included are Verlaine, Rimbaud, Maeterlinck, Claudel, Gide, Proust, Apollinaire, Jean Cocteau, Paul Valery, and Valery Larbaud. Tkhorzhevsky's translations were far from universally appreciated. The poet Vladislav Khodasevich was reputed to have quipped about his translation of the Rubaiyat: "I had a terrible nightmare. I dreamed that I was a Person poet and that Tkhorzhevsky was translating me" (Karlinsky 315). And Vladimir Nabokov, in a letter to Gleb Struve, ridiculed Tchorzhevsky's translation of Rimbaud's "The Drunken Boat" for his unwarranted additions (such as a captain of the Russian intelligentsia). Wrappers designed by Boris N. Grosser (1889-1982), a French Jewish artist of Russian birth who illustrated numerous books published by Russian emigres with his distinctive woodcut designs. After studying with Bilibin, Grosser continued his training in Munich and Paris. After 1918, he lived in Odessa and in 1920 he emigrated, settling in Paris after 1921. He collaborated with numerous publishing houses in Paris, Berlin, and Holland, illustrating the works of Ivan Bunin, Vladimir Nabokov and many others. Grosser remains an understudied part of Russian book design and illustration abroad. One of 500 copies printed. Not in Savine; not at the Russian State or National Library.

First edition, fourth impression, a month after the first. This copy in a sensationalist jacket, seen but once before by this cataloguer. The cover image shows Sassoon during the aftermath of the trench raid described in Chapter II, "The Raid." He was to receive the Military Cross for his actions in what he refers to as "tidy[ing] up the mess in No Man's Land." (p.39) The official citation in the Gazette is more laudatory, less laconic; "For conspicuous gallantry during a raid on the enemy's trenches. He remained for 1½ hours under rifle and bomb fire collecting and bringing in our wounded. Owing to his courage and determination all the killed and wounded were brought in." (Supplement to the London Gazette, 27 July, 1916. p.7441) The last man unaccounted for was Corporal "Mick" O'Brien, "somewhere down in the craters." Sassoon returned once again and found the badly wounded man; "It was heavy work, for he was tall and powerfully built, and the soft earth gave way under our feet as we lugged and hoisted the limp shattered body. The Germans must have seen us in the half light, but they stopped firing; perhaps they felt sorry for us … I looked down at him and then turned away; the face was grotesquely terrible, smeared with last night's burnt cork, the forehead matted with a tangle of dark hair." (p.38) It is this moment that Hookway Cowles has chosen to illustrate.
