Vertag Ullstein, Berlin 1930 - Inscribed Rarity. Nabokov, Vladimir. KONIG DAME BUBE [King Queen and Knave]. Berlin: Vertag Ullstein, [1930]., Extraordinary Presentation Copy of the First German Edition published two years after the first edition in Russian which was also issued i n Berlin [Juliar A9.1]. 8vo. 266 pp. Original publisher's oatmeal cloth covered boards showing modest use. An excellent, very good tight copy. Nabokov has inscribed the book to: " L. and B. Thompson / with the author's best love / Berlin VIII. 30 " [Lisbeth and Bertram were very close friends of the Nabokov's for over 40 years.] Included is a further five line inscription by Nabokov about the figures illustrated on the dustwrapper [not present] & their relationship to the characters in the book, as well as a holograph comment on the title page regarding the origins of the subtitle. In all, a unique presentation indeed indicating some of the author's sentiments concerning the production of this edition. Nabokov presentations are uncommon especially those of such a personal & generous nature. Custom Clamshell Case. [Juliar D9.1] [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Paris: The Black Sun Press, 1930. - Quarto. Original printed wrappers. Very faint shadow to spine area around slipcase finger- pulls, otherwise a fine copy, in rather scuffed and rubbed silver foil covered slipcase, with a significant portion of lower (or upper) panel snagged (but present and still whole). First edition, trade issue. From a total edition of 283 numbered copies, this is one of two hundred copies with the text printed on Holland. Now acknowledged as among the defining poetic works of the American 20th century, THE BRIDGE also marks the debut of Walker Evans' photographs as book illustrations. Although Crane and the Crosbys had initially planned to use one of Joseph Stella's iconic paintings as the frontispiece, and a corresponding proof of the title pulled, they opted instead to include the photographs by Evans, who Crane had actually met at the Brooklyn Bridge in 1928. Crane was engaged with the decision, taking a careful hand in the placement of the photographs in relation to the text, and pleased with the final result, noting in a letter to Caresse Crosby: "I think Evans is the most living, vital photographer of any whose work I know. More and more I rejoice that we decided on his pictures rather than Stella’s." While one may surely regret that the edition with Stella's frontispiece didn't come about, the conjoining of Evans' photographs with Crane's poem has proved a durable aesthetic marriage, particularly after the selection of photographs was revised for the subsequent Liveright edition. The circular cut out forms display the title: KIM in gilt letters and gilt dots, the central form bears a gilt sunburst type design formed of small dots, around a larger gilt dot, these are repeated in each corner of the front and back covers, the mounted title form on the back covers does not display the lettered word Kim, but does have the sunburst design on the central form; multicolored, sewn headbands; inner leather turn-ins with green slik endpapers, and green, brown and gold marbled flyleaves. The binding is unsigned, but possibly designed by Schmied, who also used Crette and Dunand to design and execute bindings for his books; the design also seems to echo some of Paul Bonet's early work, in the use of the circular forms with lettering. The spines show fading, some rubbing to the leather surfaces of the spines, spine ends, outer hinges. In dark green & gold-flecked paper-covered slipcases, with brown morocco leather facings.         THE BOOK OF SIGNS which contains all manner of symbols from the earliest times to the middle ages by primitive peoples and early Christians. Collected, drawn and explained by Rudolph Koch. Translated from the German by Vyvyan Holland.

Japanese wood-veneer covered slipcase, Formerly Mark Severin's copy with his signature on the front flyleaf with a faint 'symbol' below and a small symbolic ownership monograph (?af).         Ash Wednesday

London: Faber & Faber, 1930 - Inscribed on the flyleaf: "Allen (Tate) Red (Robert Penn Warren) April 30, 1930." A superb association copy, inscribed from Robert Penn Warren to his friend from Vanderbilt, fellow 'Fugitive' poet ALLEN TATE. Inscribed in the very year that both contributed to the now-famous southern agrarian manifesto I'LL TAKE MY STAND (1930), and inscribed one day after Eliot's ASH WEDNESDAY, was published (April 29, 1930 as per Gallup). The association deepens when one considers that Eliot's poetry - THE WASTELAND, in particular - had a profound influence on both writers The copy has several pencilled notes and marks throughout, probably in Tate's hand First trade edition, one of 2000 copies. 12mo. .       Paris: Henry Babou and Jack Kahane / New York: The Fountain Press, 1930 - Folio in 4s. Untrimmed and partly unopened in original white paper covers printed in black and green, in the original glassine. Enclosed in the original folding card wrapper covered with gilt paper, in the original green paper-covered slipcase with gilt edges and facings and then housed in a green cloth solander box made by The Chelsea Bindery. Tiny amount of wear to glassine at front fore-edge at head, one small chip to paper side of slipcase but overall a greatly superior copy, the gilt card wrapper and slipcase in excellent condition. First edition, one of 100 copies printed on imperial handmade iridescent Japan paper signed by Joyce under the limitation notice (in pencil, as the paper would not take ink), the whole edition being 685 copies. This is the most luxurious issue, originally priced $40: the edition was completed by 500 copies on handmade linen, priced $20; and 10 copies on imperial handmade iridescent Japan paper and 75 on handmade linen, these latter two issues designated writer's copies and numbered in roman numerals. Copies were generally issued in paper covers, with a glassine wrapper, in a green slipcase; some copies of the special issues were additionally enclosed, as is this, in a three-panel card wrapper covered with gilt paper, within the green slipcase. The entire construct is relatively delicate and especially liable to chip. Slocum & Cahoon A41. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
