My Early Life, inscribed and dated by Churchill to steel magnate Charles M. Schwab from the personal collection of Churchill's biographer, Ronald I. Cohen, MBE

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1930. London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1930. First edition, later printing. Hardcover. Very good plus. This British first edition, fourth printing, of Churchill's autobiography is inscribed and dated to American steel magnate Charles M. Schwab. The inscription, in black ink on the second free endpaper, reads: "To | Charles M. Schwab | With every good wish | from | Winston S. Churchill | 6.2.31." Charles Michael Schwab (1862-1939) began as an engineer in Andrew Carnegie's steelworks, rising by age 35 to President of Carnegie Steel (1897 to 1901), then President of U.S. Steel (1901 to 1903), and finally Chairman of Bethlehem Steel from 1903 until his death.  Schwab's association with Churchill was long and significant.  En route to England on the Olympic (sister to the Titanic) in 1914, Schwab witnessed the sinking of the Audacious.  Churchill - then First Lord of the Admiralty - met Schwab on 31 October.  (Gilbert, Companion III, Part 1, p.241.)  In fact, Churchill personally released Schwab to enter the country; all other Olympic passengers were held in custody for several days to delay news of the fate of the Audacious.  Schwab "pledged the support of his factories to the allied cause" (Gilbert, Companion V, Part 2, p.29) and left London with a huge contract for munitions and howitzer guns.  Most impressively Schwab agreed to build 20 submarines for the Royal Navy - no mean feat, as the submarines were to be delivered in half a year and built in secrecy.  These U.S.-built "Montreal Boats" were assembled in Canada in order to circumvent U.S. neutrality requirements.  Schwab was later appointed by President Wilson to head the entire U.S. shipbuilding effort, which under his leadership built 495 ships in 16 months.  Though Schwab was enriched by the war, his loyalty seems more than financial.  Germany reportedly offered Schwab an enormous sum - $100 million - for controlling interest in Bethlehem.  Schwab replied: "Gentlemen, I have given my word to the British... and there are no sums that you can offer me that will make me go back on my word."  (Hessen, Steel Titan: The Life of Charles M. Schwab, p.215).  When Churchill visited the U.S. in 1929, he wrote to Bernard Baruch "I ought surely... meet Mr. Schwab, with whom I did the big deal for the 20 secret submarines in the early days of the war... We have kept in touch since and I should much like to meet him again in his own country."  (Gilbert, Companion V, Part 2, p.28).  Schwab responded by putting his extravagant personal railcar at Churchill's disposal during his U.S. tour - an offer Churchill gratefully accepted, employing it from Los Angeles all across the country and calling it "an enormous convenience and comfort."  (Gilbert, Companion V, Part 2, p.45).  On 25 October 1929 Churchill repaid Schwab's courtesy by addressing a New York dinner of the American Iron and Steel Institute (of which Schwab was President).  Schwab died at the helm of Bethlehem Steel in September 1939.  During the Second World War the 15 shipyards of the steelmaking empire he forged produced a total of 1,121 ships, more than any other wartime builder.  This first edition, fourth printing of the British first edition of My Early Life was published two months after the first printing and is virtually identical.  The edition was bound in a bright plum cloth that proved quite susceptible to fading, with contents prone to spotting.  This copy is in very good plus condition.  The binding is square and tight, retaining a nicely rounded spine and showing only light wear to extremities, but with some of the typical spine toning.  The contents are notably free of spotting.  Mild age-toning to the page edges and dust soiling to the top edge are the only flaws noted.  The sole previous ownership mark other than the author's inscription is a small 1.5 x 1 inch sticker with the printed name "Hugh Cox" affixed to the upper front pastedown.  The binding is protected with a fine replica of the original bright plum dust jacket.  Bibliographic reference: Cohen A91.1.f, Woods/ICS A37(ab.4), Langworth p.131

He studied at the Liszt Royal Academy in Budapest under Ernst von Dohnanyi, with whom he developed a close friendship. Kilenyi's father was a teacher of George Gershwin. Besnyo, born in Budapest, moved to Berlin in 1930, where the photographic avant-garde was prominent; her photographs appeared in the Berliner Illustrierten Zeitung, among other publications. Besnyo became part of a circle of socially and politically engaged intellectuals and artists such as György Kepes, Joris Ivens, John Fernhout, Laszlo Moholy- Nagy, Otto Umbehr (Umbo), Robert Capa, and others. She established her own studio in 1931 but, with the growing threat of National Socialism, moved to Amsterdam in 1932, reaching some prominence there as a photographer until she was forbidden, under the occupation, to engage in all journalistic activities. Besnyo resumed her artistic activities after the war and went on to win many awards for her work. Her photographs are held by museums in both Holland and Germany.         ARCHIVOS MUSICALES ].

Barcelona, 1879-1930. New York: Random House, 1930. New York: Random House, 1930. First Edition. Fine/Fine. Illustrated by Rockwell Kent. A lovely copy of Rockwell Kent's illustrated "Moby Dick," published shortly after the three volume Lakeside Press Edition. Book is Fine, bright and square, with none of the gilt rubbed as is common with this title. The fragile dust jacket has been well protected, and is also in Fine condition, one short closed tear on the rear panel. The nicest copy that we have handled. Quite a rare find for this jacket, which is so often in dismal condition. Considered to be one of the most famous illustrated books of the 20th century and a towering example of Rockwell Kent's illustrations. Fine in Fine. dust jacket.

        PAGANY A NATIVE QUARTERLY

Boston & Redding. Winter 1930 through Fall / Winter 1932/3 (i.e. Jan/March 1933).. Boston & Redding. Winter 1930 through Fall / Winter 1932/3 (i.e. Jan/March 1933).. Volume one number one through volume three, number four. Twelve issues. Printed wrappers. Wrappers of I:1 affected by old damp causing color bleed to prelims and terminal leaves (somewhat offset by a brief inscription from Johns above the copyright notice); small nick in spine of I:3; II:4 sunned at edges; wrappers of III:4 a bit damp marked at edges resulting in some color bleed to extreme margins of facing leaves, otherwise a very good set. Edited by Richard Johns. A complete run of this distinctive American periodical, among the very best of its era. In launching Pagany, Johns sought the support and editorial assistance of William Carlos Williams, inviting him to become a co-editor and contributor, and although Williams declined the former official function, he granted permission for Johns to use "Pagany" as the title of the magazine (derived from Williams's 1928 novel, A VOYAGE TO PAGANY) and contributed mightily, including the "manifesto" that opens the first issue. Johns provided an explanation of the magazine's title in the first issue: "Pagus is a broad term, meaning any sort of collection of peoples from the smallest district or village to the country as an inclusive whole. Taking America as pagus, any one of us as the paganus, the inhabitant, and our conceptions, our agreements and disagreements, our ideas, ideals, whatever we have to articulate is pagany, our expression." (A RETURN TO PAGANY, p.50). The roster of authors is remarkable: Williams (substantial sections of WHITE MULE appear herein), McAlmon, Rexroth, Macleod, Tyler, Ford, Zukofsky, Winters, Crosby, Butts, Munson, Caldwell, Stein, Seaver, Bynner, Imbs, Scott, J.Lewis, Blackmur, Hugnet, Halper, Carnevali, Roditi, Burke, Reznikoff, Atget, Dahlberg, Pound, Thoma, Aiken, Bunting, Cummings, Dos Passos, Loy, Abbott, Cheever, Cocteau, Fitts, Herbst, Porter, Rolfe, Toomer, Conroy, Farrell, Neagoe, et al. HOFFMAN, et al, p. 297.
