Heron Press Inc., New York 1930 - " One thousand one hundred numbered copies of 'Blood' have been printed in Granjon; 1 to100 on Charing Handmade Paper bound in cloth; 101 ti 1100 on Godleian Rag Laid, bound in specially designed paper. The first hundred copies have been signed by author and illustrator." This is the first book I have seen with 2 limitation pages. The first one says 750 copies and is un-numbered and unsigned, a possible mistake. This is on the verso of the page before the half title page. The limitation showing 1100 copies which is signed and numbered is on the verso of the half title page. Very confusing This is #31. Fine condition in quarter cloth black binding and vellum boards with illustrated paper label attached.Book is clean and unopened. The former owner Montgomery Evans II attached a "very cool" but strange bookplate to the front paste down. There are 7 lines of very neat script in pencil on verso of back cover. slight wear to front spine corner. A very rare and wonderful collectible. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Faber & Gwyer Ltd, London 1930 - FIRST PUBLISHED EDITION of Auden's first book, SIGNED BY AUDEN on title page; one of only1000 copies printed. Poems, accepted for publication by T.S. Eliot at Faber & Faber in 1930, established Auden's reputation at the young age of twenty-three. Included in Auden's landmark volume is the dramatic sketch "Paid on Both Sides: A Charade" dedicated to Cecil-Day Lewis as well as thirty shorter poems drawing on a breadth of material including the Icelandic sagas, Old English poetry, the works of Marx and Freud, and public-school life. Many of the poems first appeared two years earlier in a pamphlet (also entitled Poems) privately printed in a small number of copies (estimated to be about 30) that were handset by his friend Stephen Spender at the end of Auden's third year at Oxford. This copy also with a neat presentation inscription (dated 1932) from Auden's friend Richard "Dick" Crossman on the half-title and with a rare original Faber and Faber ad slip for Poems laid in. London: Faber & Faber, 1930. Small quarto, original stiff wrappers. Wrappers with a little edgewear; rear wrapper with a few indentations and a little rubbing. Rare signed.

        Sezione di Spilimbergo Scuola Corale.

(Spilimbergo, Italy Opera Nazionale Dopolavoro c. 1930s) - Quarto. (30)ff. scrapbook belonging to a member of the Spilimbergo Choral School, and containing eight hand-tinted photographs, a roster of members, mimeographed sheets with lyrics to songs and a guide to a folk dance, and hand-written sheet music. One photograph shows the entire group in folkloric attire. The other photographs show couples dancing; most demonstrate specific steps to the furlana, a courtship folk dance. The choral roster in the front of the book lists the name of each member, his or her choral part and occupation. The Spilimbergo Scuola Corale was part of the Opera Nazionale Dopolavoro (OND), which was formed by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini in cooperation with fascist trade unions in 1925. The OND provided recreational and cultural activities for industrial workers and was intended to compete with Socialist cultural organizations. The OND’s activities were popular among workers, but it was never a successful tool for Fascist indoctrination; as such, the songs in this scrapbook appear to be more sentimental and folkloric than propagandistic. In slate blue paper wrappers, with the title calligraphed in black ink to front cover. The mimeographed pages bear the official stamp of the OND and the choral school. Repair to spine and some edgewear, else about fine. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        STREET HAUNTING. Signed.

The Westgate Press, San Francisco 1930 - Woolf, Virginia STREET HAUNTING. Signed. San Francisco, 1930. 8vo., The Westgate Press. First Editon, First Limited Edition. Limited to 500 numbered copies signed by Woolf on the limitation page. Printed at the Gradhorn Press. Patterned paper-covered boards with emerald green leather gilt-stamped spine. Original card slipcase. A fine fresh copy of the most difficult of issues. Kirkpatrick A13 states: "There is at least one variant of the binding in sage-green paper boards patterned in gold and darker green with emerald-green leather spine and a green slip-in case. Mr. David McGee (bibliographer of the Grabhorn Press) states: '". the majority of the edition was bound in blue - ratio of 10 to 1 in favor of blue.". It is reasonable to presume that about 50 copies only appeared in green & that since most of these have faded to brown at the spine, perhaps as few as a half dozen survive in fine unfaded condition. This is one of those elusive fine copies. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        My Early Life

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1930. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Very good plus. This book comes from the personal collection of Churchill's bibliographer, Ronald I. Cohen. This is the first edition, first printing, first state, first binding state. Originally published in October 1930, My Early Life is Churchill's extremely popular autobiography, covering the years from his birth in 1874 to his first few years in Parliament. One can hardly ask for more adventurous content. These were momentous and formative years for Churchill, including his time as a war correspondent and cavalry officer in theatres as varied as Cuba, northwest India, and sub-Saharan and southern Africa. This time contained a wide range of experiences in Churchill’s life. Not only was he developing as an author, publishing his first books, and making his first lecture tour of North America, but this was also the time of his capture and daring escape during the Boer War, which made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. Churchill would take his seat in Parliament only weeks after the end of Queen Victoria's reign. My Early Life remains one of the most popular and widely read of all Churchill's books. And for good reason, as the work certainly ranks among the most charming and assessible of his many books. An original 1930 review likened it to a "beaker of Champagne." That effervescent charm endures; a more recent writer called it "a racy, humorous, self-deprecating classic of autobiography." To be sure, Churchill takes some liberties with facts and perhaps unduly lightens or over-simplifies certain events, but this is eminently forgivable and in keeping with the wit, pace, and engaging style that characterizes the book. My Early Life sold very well at the time and has seen a great many editions since, many of them collectible in their own right, but of course a premium attaches to first editions. The challenge for collectors is that the plum colored binding of this edition proved especially susceptible to fading, soiling, and wear; nearly all copies are considerably spine faded. Moreover, the contents are susceptible to heavy spotting and the binding is often cocked. This helps explain why so many first editions of this book have been torn apart and rebound. Here is a very good plus copy - an unrestored first edition, first printing, first state, first binding state that, while not fine, is in unusually clean condition for the edition. Edition, impression, and state are confirmed by a three-line rather than five-line title on the front cover, a binding in rough texture cloth rather than smooth, and 11 Churchill titles listed on the half-title verso. The cloth binding remains square and tight with nicely rounded spine and bright gilt. The spine is toned, as usual, but retains a respectable amount of color and decent shelf presentation. We note only modest wear to extremities, with a hint of fraying at the spine ends and small bumps to the lower corners. The contents are notable for showing no spotting whatsoever. We note modest overall age-toning with minor dust soiling to the top edge of the text block. The sole previous ownership mark is a gift inscription in pencil on the first free endpaper reading: "Hope you'll like this | Best wishes | Bob | Xmas 1930". The inscription may be erasable, but we have left it intact since it is from just two months after publication. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A91.1.a, Woods/ICS A37(aa), Langworth p.131.
