England 1930 - On offer is an intriguing and rather enigmatic pair of handwritten manuscript diaries belonging to a British gentleman and written during 1930 and 1936. We believe after a casual study of the difficult cursive that our author is a British diplomat or Foreign Service worker using a British Empire Service League. Day to day activities, mention of family, staff, contacts and payments lead one to suspect well placed intelligent writer who makes extensive notations especially of current events and most especially in the event laden year of 1936 when England suffers the death of the King, the new King beset by controversy and finally abdicating and of course Italy's assault on Abyssinia, Hitler's rantings and much, much more. The patient reader/researcher interested in the time period from the perspective of an English diplomat should be well rewarded once the cursive is conquered. 9 x 5.5 inch books are in shabby condition, 1930 worse than 1936. Covers are shot but present, loose text block but still legible and complete. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Korrespondenzsammlung mit Briefen von u. a. Alexander Lernet-Holenia, Hermann Röbbeling, Felix Salten, Heinrich Schnitzler und Hans Thimig.

Verschiedene Orte, 1930er Jahre. (ms. Br. mit eh. U. vom 5. IV. 1932). - Neben zahlreichen nicht identifizierten oder biographisch nicht erfaßbaren Verfassern finden sich in vorliegender Korrespondenzsammlung Schriftstücke der Schriftsteller, Schauspieler, Komponisten und Regisseure Herbert Furreg (Intendant, Theaterdirektor und Übersetzer, 1897-1958), Heinrich Glücksmann (Schriftsteller, Kunstkritiker und Dramaturg, 1863-1947), Paul Hansen (Schrifts [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        A Coast Pomo Girl

Boston: Suffolk Engraving Company, 1930. A breath-taking image from "The North American Indian", the grandest illustrated work ever produced in the United States, the most important illustrated work on Native Americans, and the single greatest book in Western Americana. Only the double-elephant folio edition of Audubon's "Birds of America" surpasses Curtis in its massive ambition and beauty of execution. "...Because of the singular combination of qualities with which he has been blessed, and because of his extraordinary success in making and using his opportunities... (Curtis) has been able to do what no other man has ever done; what, as far as we can see, no other man could do. He is an artist who works out of doors and not in a closet. He is a close observer, whose qualities of mind and body fit him to make his observations out in the field, surrounded by the wild life he commemorates. He has lived on intimate terms with many different tribes of the mountains and the plains. He knows them as they hunt, as they travel, as they go about their various avocations on the march and in camp. He knows their medicine men and their sorcerers, their chiefs and warriors, their young men and maidens. He has not only seen their vigorous outward existence, but has caught glimpses, such as few white men ever catch, into that strange spiritual and mental life of theirs; from whose inner most recesses all white men are forever barred...." (Theodore Roosevelt, Foreword to Volume I) Renowned for their unrivalled basketry skills, the Pomo tribe inhabited Northern California. Edward Curtis was fascinated by the story of the Native Americans from childhood. His in-depth knowledge of the various tribes increased in parallel with his skill as a photographer during his participation in a number of scientific expeditions in the 1890s. In 1896, Curtis began to take photographs of the Native American tribes (by 1930 he had taken over 40,000 negatives of eighty tribes) and evolve his hugely ambitious plan for a comprehensive work which would illustrate his romantic vision of Native American life before the disastrous impact of European contact. With the enthusiastic support of President Theodore Roosevelt (who wrote the foreword to the present work) and the financial backing of J. Pierpont Morgan (Curtis was introduced to him by Roosevelt), the publishing project finally got under way in 1906. Pierpont Morgan died in 1913 just before the completion of the ninth volume, but his son agreed to continue underwriting the project; between them, they eventually contributed about a third of the $1,500,000 cost. What had originally been projected to take five or six years eventually stretched to twenty-three, finally reaching a conclusion in 1930 but leaving Curtis a broken and bankrupt man. Nonetheless, his grand design was completed, and his work remains as his monument. Cf. Naef & Goldschmidt The Truthful Lens 40; cf. Howes C-965. Photogravure after Edward Curtis, printed by the Suffolk Engraving Company, wove paper (watermarked 'Van Gelder Zonen Made in Holland'). Excellent condition.

[Photo Album]: CCC Camp and Various Life Photographs

Pittsfield, Massachusetts. 1930-1946. Oblong quarto. String-tied album lacking the boards measuring 8" x 11" containing over 400 captioned black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 1"x 1" and 9.25" x 7.25". Good only with chips, tears, and lacking the boards. A collection of photographs of a young New England man, captioned as Joseph Guarnieri, as he goes through the Great Depression and into the 1940s.The son of an Italian immigrant, Joseph documents the decades of the 1930s and 40s in a series of photographs seemingly displayed in no particular order. Here his life in New England can be seen through jobs he took on like that of a postal telegraph carrier, seen here in a group photo and riding his bike down a city street, a photograph captioned "barber school" from 1936, one of himself and a young woman captioned, "lifeguard and new acquisition," as well as family shots and vacation photos. Scattered throughout the album are numerous images of the time he spent in a Civilian Conservation Corps Camp in Becket, Massachusetts possibly working with a crew constructing roads. Considered the most popular of the New Deal programs, the corps was available to unmarried men ages 18-25 who were members of relief families. As members of the C.C.C. they earned a $30 a month wage, $25 of which was to be sent home, and were provided with housing, food, and clothing. Joseph took pictures of the camp itself with one blurry image captioned "the wash room," as well as his other compatriots posing on hills, in gravel pits, and in front of cars with "CCC Life" written under them. One photo of a tough looking man is captioned "fighter 1934 CCC Camp." One section labeled "Old CCC" shows a picture of two men smiling outside of a tent captioned, "when CCC Camp was in tents."Although he never went into the service, friends of Guarnieri did and their pictures are pasted among the rest of the assortment. Towards the end of the album are drawings, cards, and letters sent to Joe. In one letter from an A.H. Balorch stationed overseas with the Air Engine Group he writes, "I didn't know what happened to you I thought maybe they caught up with you and drafted you. I'm glad they didn't though, I'll shake anybody's hand that managed to keep out." Eventually Joseph started a construction company in Boston Massachusetts, presumably from the skills gained during his time with the CCC. A business card on the final page states, "Joseph D. Guarnieri: Contractor & Jobbing for Cleaning up House Gardens, and also new ideas for gardens."An interesting and complete look at the life of a young man finding his way through the America of 1930s. .

COLLECTION OF SOUTH TEXAS REAL ESTATE EPHEMERA: Adams Gardens in the Valley of Golden Grapefruit / Points of Interest In and Around Brownsville / Why You Should Visit the Valley Now etc. etc

Various.: Chas. F. C. Ladd. Circa 1930. ARCHIVE OF TEN ITEMS RELATING TO REAL ESTATE PROMOTION IN SOUTHERN TEXAS, various publishers, 1920s- 1930s. Good to very good condition. 1. REAL ESTATE BROCHURE FOR ADAMS GARDENS (between Harlingen and La Feria in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas) "Adams Gardens in the Valley of Golden Grapefruit;" folded size is 4 x 9 inches unfolding to illustrated two-color poster size advertising sheet 24 x 18 inches. Text on the advertisement reads "Artists Conception of Reba Bass Lake, showing the homes and orchards, as it is designed to appear when fully developed." When folded in half, a 12 x 18 inch sheet pictures Adams Gardens in the southern-most point in Texas, located on the border with Mexico approximately 28 miles from Brownsville, Texas. Brochure has numerous pencil computations, the owner's name in pencil and the inscription "Knox Penn(sylvania)"; light wear, good condition. *** Developer Chas. F. C. Ladd is pictured on the brochure ("He has found Happy Homes for Hundreds") and fulsome text describes the glories of his new development. "More and more each year successful men and women of sufficient financial means to allow them to locate where they find things most to their liking are coming to the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Adams Gardens, on the main highway of the Valley, with its wide expanse of fertile soils, offers the choicest of sites for country homes, where all the comforts and conveniences of civilization can be enjoyed, amidst the luxuriance of a semi-tropical climate, and a citrus orchard developed under the most favorable conditions. Here you can make YOUR home in a land of orange blossoms, of palms and poinsettias, of winter sunshine and warmth--a most delightful place in which to live." The Texas State Historical Association's website states: "During the 1920s Brownsville underwent a new period of prosperity as the area experienced a prolonged land boom. Enterprising agents went to the midwestern and northern states boosting the abundant cheap land in and around Brownsville. Special trains were dispatched to bring prospective buyers to the area, and during the height of the boom in the early 1920s as many as 200 landseekers a day were being brought into the environs. The population of Brownsville, which was just over 6,000 in 1900, grew nearly four-fold during the next three decades, reaching 22,021 in 1930." The "Adams Gardens in the Valley of Golden Grapefruit" brochure is a remarkable example of hyperbolic depression-era promotional literature extolling real estate in the "Garden of Golden Grapefruit." _______________ 2. PHOTO-ILLUSTRATED REAL ESTATE BROCHURE "Adams Gardens In the Heart of the Lower Rio Grande Valley" (folded size is 9 x 4 inches) promoting Adams Gardens, Texas. Brochure unfolds to a map 12 x 18 inches locating Adams Gardens (between Harlingen and La Feria) in the context of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, with Brownsville dominant in the south-east. Two inset maps show 1) Texas in the context of the United States and 2) the Lower Rio Grande Valley in the context of Texas. Legend on map indicates Railroads, Graded Roads, Proposed Ship Channel at Brownsville, County Seats, etc. (After numerous delays, the deep water Ship Channel, approved by voters in 1928, opened in 1936.) Light wear, overall very good condition. **** Text extols the virtues of the Lower Rio Grande Valley ("Down Where The Golden Grapefruit Grows") and Adams Gardens, in particular (Chas. F. C. Ladd, Developer). Fulsome text states: "Adams Gardens, down in the southernmost Tip of Texas, offers wonderful attractive sites for winter homes and country estates, in a semi-tropical climate, where the winters have a mean temperature of 61.3 degrees, and the heat of the summers is moderated by cool breezes from the Gulf of Mexico. Here it is possible to live an outdoor life throughout the year--fish, hunt, play golf; find new health, new happiness, new life, far away from the noise, the dirt, and the nervous strain of life in the cities." (A hasty Zillow search indicates that "winter homes and country estates" are not a feature of Adams Gardens' current housing profile.) Another example of the hyperbolic depression-era promotional literature published to entice those living in colder climes in the northeast and midwest United States to travel "Down Where the Golden Grapefruit Grows." ______________________ 3. SEVEN EPHEMERAL PUBLICATIONS RELATING TO REAL ESTATE AND AGRICULTURE OPPORTUNITIES in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, circa 1930. Publications include tourist brochures, a newspaper off-print relating to the Valley, booster publications, a flow-chart showing fruit and vegetable production, etc. Three of the publications are offered through "Smith & Trainer, Indiana, Pennsylvania," agents for "Lone Star Immigration Company, Brownsville, Texas": these are a four panel brochure, 9 x 4 inches, titled "Points of Interest in and around Brownsville"; an eight page brochure, 8 1/2 x 6 inches touting "Unprecedented Opportunities for Investment" in the Valley; an 11 x 8 1/2 inch news-sheet sub-titled "Why You Should Visit the Valley Now." Also included is a four-panel 9 x 4 inch brochure from Lone Star titled "Lower Rio Grande Valley," extolling the region's bounties; an off-print ("Ship Canal Assures Prosperity") from the Indiana, Pennsylvania "Messenger"; an 11 x 17 inch spread sheet showing the Valley's booming growth in fruit and vegetable production between 1907 and 1930; a 9 x 4 inch eight-panel brochure encouraging immigration published by the Rio Grande Valley Telephone Company and titled "The Valley Catechism." This brochure (copyright 1929 by John M. Taylor) was offered with the following message: "We are sending you this pamphlet with the suggestion that you in turn mail it to a friend in the north." The "Smith & Trainer, Indiana, Pennsylvania" publications are a reflection of the speculative land boom that unfolded in the Valley in the 1920s, as discussed on the Texas State Historical Association's website. The Smith & Trainer news-sheet ("Why You Should Visit the Valley Now") amply supports the Historical Association's observation regarding land speculation by Northern investors arriving by train; it states "any person who contemplates a visit (to the Valley) in the future should take advantage of our next and last Spring Excursion, June 27, 1930. There is no obligation attached to this excursion whatever. But those who have the pioneers (sic) mind and can vision the future will recognize opportunities there now for investments that will have disappeared before next fall." All seven ephemeral items, each in very good, clean condition, indelibly reflect the Rio Grande Valley land-boom of the 1920s and the appeals made to speculators across the country. A rhetorical question posed in one pamphlet asks: "When is the best time to locate in the Lower Rio Grande Valley?" The succinct response: "Now." __________________________________ 4. Booklet "Services, Facilities, and Costs of Marketing Vegetables in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas" published by the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station 1928, 39pp, 9 x 6 inches, paper wrappers, light discoloration to the wrappers, otherwise very good condition. ******* A detailed study of the economics of marketing vegetables in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The author observes "Prior to 1921 the price paid per acre for 161 farms averaged $346.00. In 1926 these same farms were valued by the owners at $627.00 per acre [an] increase in value of almost 20 percent a year...." One factor attributed by the author to the increased per-acre value of land was "increases in value of citrus groves." A well-researched document detailing infrastructure and expenses involved in growing and marketing vegetables in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. .
