Schriften / Bd. 5.).. Ohne Ort, ohne Jahr (ca.1930). 4°. III, 116 Seiten. Originales Halbleinen. Schriften / Bd. 5.). Leo Löwenthal (3 November 1900 ?- 21 January 1993) was a German sociologist usually associated with the Frankfurt School. Born in Frankfurt as the son of assimilated Jews (his father was a physician), Löwenthal came of age during the turbulent early years of the Weimar Republic. He joined the newly founded Institute for Social Research in 1926 and quickly became its leading expert on the sociology of literature and mass culture as well as the managing editor of the journal it launched in 1932, the Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung. Heterodox and independent Marxists, open to new intellectual currents such as psychoanalysis, and predominantly Jewish, the Institute's members swiftly fled Germany when Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933. After a year in Geneva, they settled in New York, where Columbia University gave them shelter. Löwenthal maintained a close relationship with his colleagues, even during the war when several of them moved to California and he began to work with the Office of War Information in Washington. Although Horkheimer, Adorno, and Friedrich Pollock returned to Frankfurt to reestablish the Institute after the war, Löwenthal, like former members Herbert Marcuse, Franz Neumann, Otto Kirchheimer, and Erich Fromm, chose to remain in the United States. After seven years as research director of the Voice of America, and another year at the Stanford Center for the Advanced Study of the Behavioral Sciences, he joined the Berkeley Speech Department in 1956 and shortly thereafter the Department of Sociology. Although officially retiring in 1968, Löwenthal remained vigorously active in departmental and University affairs until virtually the end of his life. From 1968 to 1972, he served on the Budget Committee, and in 1973-74, chaired the Sociology Department. The celebrated private seminar Löwenthal conducted with graduate students interested in the sociology of literature was launched during the student strike of 1970 and continued to meet through the last months of 1992. As two of its participants, Jim Stockinger and Terry Strathman, remember it, the seminar produced a remarkable ?"cross-generational dialogue,?" whose focus on literature ?"was particularly liberating?" for sociologists unaccustomed to literary analysis. ?"Good wine, cheese, hearty and spirited debate and a large dose of German conviviality,?" they recalled, ?"made these evenings unforgettable experiences.?" As a former teaching assistant of Löwenthal's, Pamela Munro (now an actress) adds that in these evenings in San Francisco, "Löwenthal exuded a Weimarian atmosphere." Löwenthal's publications were collected during the 1980s, both in German, by the Suhrkamp Verlag, and in English, by Transaction Press. Most notable among them were Prophets of Deceit (written with Norbert Guterman in 1949), Literature and the Image of Man (1957) and Literature, Popular Culture, and Society (1961). Also included were his early writings on Jewish themes and his last ruminations on postmodernism, against whose dangers he warned. His autobiographical reflections, including fascinating conversations with the German sociologist Helmut Dubiel, were published by the University of California as An Unmastered Past in 1987. The extensive interviews he gave in 1989 to another German interlocutor, Frithjof Hager, dealt with postmodernism and other contemporary themes; they stimulated a collection of responses by European and American scholars published in honor of his ninetieth birthday as "Geschichte Denken: Ein Notizbuch für Leo Löwenthal" by the Reclam Verlag of Leipzig. For his eightieth, he had been the recipient of a Festschrift of celebratory essays in the journal Telos. In the last decade of his life, Löwenthal was richly honored on both sides of the Atlantic. Awarded the Berkeley Citation and the Federal Republic of Germany's Distinguished Merit Cross in 1985, he also received honorary doctorates from the University of Siegen, the Free University of Berlin, and the University of Hamburg. Further, he was given the city of Frankfurt?'s Goethe Medal and Adorno Prize, as well as a year at the Berlin Institute for Advanced Study. In 1985, the first full-length appreciation of his work was published by Michael Kausch as "Erziehung und Unterhaltung: Leo Löwenthals Theorie der Massenkommunikation". As the final survivor of the Frankfurt School?'s inner circle, Löwenthal achieved international recognition as a symbol of its remarkable collective achievement. Löwenthal's training in collaborative scholarship and his broad humanistic learning allowed him to play a leading role both in the institutional and intellectual life of the campus as a whole. An early supporter of the Free Speech Movement, but troubled by the excesses that followed, he was a leading member of the faculty committee chaired by Charles Muscatine that produced the widely admired report published as Education at Berkeley. Löwenthal displayed an extraordinary ability to maintain close friendships with scholars in disparate fields and begin new ones with members of very different generations. He remained a vital presence long after his active teaching days were over. His quick, often acerbic wit, uncanny shrewdness in judging ?- and gleefully gossiping about ?- people, and manifest zest for living life fully never deserted him. Nor did his intransigent refusal to abandon the long-cherished ideals of his youth, even as he soberly acknowledged the improbability of their ever being realized. Ruthlessly unsentimental and impatient with cant of any kind, he nonetheless refused to succumb to the sour cynicism of those who turn into the deadly adults Horkheimer and Adorno warned against. Löwenthal died in Berkeley, California. (Wikipedia)

        Moby Dick: Or, the Whale

New York: Random House, 1930 Illustrated by Rockwell Kent. First edition. Publisher's black cloth boards, with lettering and whale illustrations stamped in metallic silver; in the original gray pictorial dust jacket, with the same whale illustrations to the front panel and spine in black and blue, lettered in black. A fine copy, with a hint of wear to the spine ends, minor rubbing to the spine, else fine; unclipped dust jacket, with minor wear and light rubbing to the extremities, a few minor nicks to the spine head, light toning to the spine and panel edges, else fine. Overall, a near fine and pleasing copy. One of the great American novels, Moby Dick is narrated by Ishmael, a sailor on the Pequod. The ship is led by the tyrannical Captain Ahab who is consumed by his thirst for revenge on a ferocious sperm whale named Moby Dick. The novel employs a symbolic use of the color white - an expansion upon Melville's similar symbolism in his 1850 novel White-Jacket. Melville wrote Moby Dick as his friendship with fellow American Renaissance author Nathaniel Hawthorne was developing and dedicated the book to him. In 1926, prolific illustrator and artist Rockwell Kent was commissioned to illustrate Richard Henry Dana, Jr.'s Two Years Before the Mast, but the artist declined, choosing instead to create illustrations for Moby Dick. Kent was given full artistic license, which he used to create a now iconic series of woodcut prints, including the matching covers and dust jacket. After critics rediscovered the text in the 1920s, Rockwell's illustrated edition helped accelerate the renewed appreciation of Moby Dick that helped establish it as a crowning achievement in American Romantic and Renaissance writing.. Illus. by Kent, Rockwell. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

        Don Quixote de la Mancha

Nonesuch Press, London 1930 - Nonesuch edition of Cervantes's great picaresque novel, limited to 1475 copies, with twenty-one color plates by E. McKnight Kauffer. Originally issued in two parts in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote begins as a parody of chivalric romances, but expands to examine the whole of Spanish society through the adventures of the deluded Quixote and his long-suffering companion Sancho Panza. This edition follows the 1743 English translation of Motteux and Ozell: "A world of disorderly Notions, pick'd out of his Books, crouded into his Imagination; and now his Head was full of nothing but Inchantments, Quarrels, Battles, Challenges, Wounds, Complaints, Amours, Torments, and abundance of Stuff and Impossibilities." This copy is warmly inscribed by the illustrator, E. McKnight Kauffer: "for Roger Fry, without whose encouragement this book would not have been done -- E. McKnight Kauffer, 1930." The preeminent English art critic of his day, Fry was instrumental in promoting Kauffer's art through the Omega Workshops, the influential Bloomsbury design collective that Fry directed with Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant; in 1925, Fry contributed the introduction to the printed catalogue of Kauffer's modernist posters. A near-fine copy of the most influential work of Spanish literature, with an important English art historical association. Two octavo volumes, original full tan niger morocco, raised bands, maroon spine labels lettered in gilt, top edges rough gilt, pages uncut. With twenty-one color illustrations by E. McKnight Kauffer throughout text. Presentation inscription from Kauffer to Roger Fry on limitation page. Rubbing to spine ends and corners, boards lightly mottled. During the interwar period, Woolf was a significant figure in London literary society and a central figure in the influential Bloomsbury Group of intellectuals. Her most famous works include the novels Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927) and Orlando (1928), and the book-length essay A Room of One's Own (1929), with its famous dictum, "A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction." Woolf suffered from severe bouts of mental illness throughout her life, thought to have been the result of what is now termed bipolar disorder, and committed suicide by drowning in 1941 at the age of 59.George Bryan "Beau" Brummell (7 June 1778 ?" 30 March 1840) was an iconic figure in Regency England, the arbiter of men's fashion, and a friend of the Prince Regent, the future King George IV. He established the mode of dress for men that rejected overly ornate fashions for one of understated, but perfectly fitted and tailored bespoke garments. This look was based on dark coats, full-length trousers rather than knee breeches and stockings, and above all immaculate shirt linen and an elaborately knotted cravat.Beau Brummell is credited with introducing, and establishing as fashion, the modern men's suit, worn with a necktie. He claimed he took five hours a day to dress, and recommended that boots be polished with champagne. His style of dress is often referred to as dandyism.Condition:Condition is Good/Very Good.  Small wear to edges, some marks/soiling to boards, light blemish to front upper corner, some dark spots to back board, little tape residue mark to lower boards near hinges, library stamp to first end page/cardholder in back, pages/hinges/text block are very good for over 80 years old!!!

Photo Album - Burma & Bangledesh

India, 1930. British Burma Photograph Album Rangoon and Coastal Sea Trade Akyab - Mawlamyine - Myeik Saya San Rebellion 1930-33 Burma, India, Bangladesh, 1930-1933. Album of snapshot photographs taken by a young marine employed by the British India Steam Navigation Company, travelling on the Irrawaddy River and working the trade routes across the Gulf of Martaban between Yangon, Akyab, Mawlamyine and Myeik in Burma and also across the Bay of Bengal to Calcutta, Cuddalore and Chennai in India. Contains 238 sepia photographs mounted with corners, each captioned in manuscript. Oblong 8vo. string-tied album measuring approximately 32 x 25 cm, black cloth boards, marbled endpapers. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 8 x 5,5 cm, and the largest 11,5 x 7 cm. Boards bowed and frayed at edges, otherwise in Very Good Condition, with uncommon views. The rather unusual album is largely centered around Burma, providing a unique firsthand visual chronicle of British trading along Burmese coasts, and also marking the riotous era of the Saya San Rebellion (1930-1932) which culminated from anti-colonial and anti-Indian sentiment. Another uncommon feature are scenes from Bangladesh, then part of British India, which include the Chittagong Armoury photographed in April 1930 immediately after another rebellion - the failed takeover attempt by Indian independence revolutionaries. Economic expansion and prosperity in British ruled Burma (Myanmar), though at the time chided by the peasant class, is the undertone of this album, with cargos of teak timber, coal and live goats being conveyed. Many large teak rafts are seen floating on the Irrawaddy River; one of these scenes is captioned "Rangoon River Frontage" referring to the city of Yangon in the distance. Splendid snapshots are taken Moulmein (Mawlamyine), three of these showing elephants being used for conveying logs at a timber plant, others showing the old pagoda, a monk with a young protégé, a small kid (goat) and the quaint town itself. In Akyab, in Rakhine State, a large cart is pulled down a dirt street by two hardy white oxen. Most of the voyages were made aboard the SS Winkfield, a cargo ship (previously War Violet) which was purchased in 1919 by the British India Steam Navigation Company. According to captions, the vessel also cruised to Tavory (presumably Dawei formerly known as Tavoy). Changing to SS Chakdina, the marine travels from Rangoon as far as Mergui [Myeik] in the extreme south of the country on the coast of an island on the Andaman Sea, where he captures views of the charming village with a hilltop pagoda and its harbour. Whilst in India, after discharging timber in Calcutta, he takes a lovely tour of the city, taking notice of a row of jute mills on the Hooghly River upon arrival. In Madras (Chennai) the vessel is unloaded of its coal, which was previously photographed as it was being manually loaded in woven baskets by both men and women. Evidently afforded more time ashore, he visits Cuddalore, in Tamil Nadu, where women are again working very hard in a wood yard, a man is crushing grain at his homestead, and children are fascinated by the foreigner dressed in white. Christmas 1930 is spent at sea, but a brief leave is taken at the historic and luxurious Mount Lavinia Hotelin Colombo, February 1931. Occasional photographs are taken at Penang in Malayasia, and at the Port of Victoria, located in the Seychelles archipelago. Overall illustrating the mariner's daily life aboard a trade ship, he includes photographs of the vessel's mechanical features, his colleagues, native cargo boats of various sorts coming alongside, and the like. Numerous other vessels are seen and named; mail ships are seen at Calcutta; Chinese junks, dugout canoes, covered river boats and hand carved wood sailing ships appear throughout. The British-India Steam Navigation Company ("BI") was formed in 1856 as the Calcutta and Burmah Steam Navigation Company. The company had been formed out of Mackinnon, Mackenzie & Co, a trading partnership of the Scots William Mackinnon and Robert Mackenzie, to carry mail between Calcutta and Rangoon. It became British India SN Co in 1862. Under the hand of Lord Inchcape (James Lyle Mackay) who had become chairman in 1913, the company became part of the P&O group of companies in 1914 through a complex amalgamation, but continued with its own identity and organisation for another nearly 60 years until 1972, when it was entirely absorbed into P&O. As one of the largest shipowners of all time, the company owned more than 500 ships and managed 150 more for other owners. At its height in 1922, BI had more than 160 ships in the fleet. Saya San (Hsaya, original name Yar Kyaw, 1876-1931) was a former monk, a physician and the leader of the 'Saya San Rebellion' of 1930-1932 in British Burma. The series of uprisings has been regarded as one of Southeast Asia's quintessential anti-colonial movements. Because of its national and historical nature, discussions about Saya San and the rebellion associated with him has persisted to this day, particularly within academic spheres. Discussions about the Saya San Rebellion often revolve around its causes and characters. Scholars have studied on it and produced several interpretations in order to located Saya San?'s position in Burmese history and examine the rebellion from different aspects. The Chittagong Armoury Raid also known as Chittagong uprising, was an attempt on 18 April 1930 to raid the armoury of police and auxiliary forces from the Chittagong armoury in Bengal province of British India by armed revolutionaries for Indian independence led by Surya Sen popularly known as Master-da. Chittagong now is in Bangladesh. . Very Good.
