The Theory of Interest. As Determined by Impatience to Spend Income, and Opportunity to Invest It

New York: The Macmillian Company 1930, 1st Edition. () xxvii, (4), 566pp. Very good. Octavo. Original dark navy blue boards with gilt lettering on spine. Embossed title on front cover. Dustsoiling to head foredge. Printed errata slip tipped in at page VII. Fourteen tables in text; seventeen tables in appendices; fifty-eight charts in text, including three fold-out. An old crease on title page. Textblock is clean. Inscribed on front free endpaper " to Sir Sidney J. Chapman with compliments of Irving Fisher", dated April 1930. Sir Sydney John Chapman (1871-1951) was an economist and civil servant. Chapman became Dean of the newly formed Commerce and Administration Faculty at Owens College, soon to be Victoria University of Manchester, in the winter of 1903-1904. His recruitment process was unique in that he brought in part-time local professionals to teach the commercial curriculum, reserving full-time employ for promising young economists. This effectively provided employment for a new generation of economists. In 1915 he was asked by the Board of Trade to help identify ways that production in the wartime industrial sector could be more efficient. He left the University to join the civil service full-time in 1918, and a year later was appointed Joint Permanent Secretary of the Board of Trade. He became full Permanent Secretary in 1920 and remained in the position for seven years. Perhaps his crowning achievement was in 1927 when he was appointed Chief Economic Advisor to the UK government for the following five years. At the end of his term, he mostly held nominal roles in administrative work until his retirement in the early 1940s. A terrific copy that will make a notable addition to a Fisher, or Chapman, collection..

        Trumpet in the Dust.

New York: Horace Liveright Inc., 1930 - Octavo. Original black cloth, titles and decoration to upper board and spine in gold and silver, top edge stained green. A few short tears to the top edge of several leaves, topstain faded and marked, lettering rubbed and dull. A decent copy. First edition, first printing. With the author's fine signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, "For Ring Lardner what a sap I'd be to try to tell you what I think of you and your work - you know . Gene Fowler April 3, 1930". A major association. Fowler met Lardner when the two men joined Damon Runyon as writers on Hearst's paper The American. They both went to Hollywood and wrote numerous screenplays. Lardner would eventually be named by HUAC as one of the Hollywood Ten and was effectively blacklisted. Trumpet in the Dust is the quasi autobiographical story of a newspaperman named Gordon Dole. It charts his life from his birth through his first attempts to become a published writer through to his inevitable demise. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        A Roving Commission

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1930 - This is Churchill's extremely popular autobiography, covering the years from his birth in 1874 to his first few years in Parliament. Published in England as My Early Life, this is one of the few Churchill first editions for which the U.S. edition bears a different title than the British. Jacketed copies are extremely scarce. Even decent unjacketed copies are unusual. The red-orange cloth binding proved highly susceptible to fading and soiling and the fragile dust jacket proved highly vulnerable to wear and severe fading of the orange color, particularly on the jacket spine. Here is a first edition, first printing in the first printing dust jacket. Condition is very good minus in a fair jacket. The red-orange binding remains clean and square with sharp corners. The vivid color remains unfaded apart from a small strip at the spine head and 1.75 inch portion of the lower spine corresponding to dust jacket losses. While these two instances of sunning prevent this copy from being fine, they do confirm that this book has spent its life with this jacket. The contents are clean with no spotting. The Scribner's "A" on the copyright page confirms a first edition, first printing. The sole previous ownership mark is a lovely inked gift inscription on the ffep from the year of publication: "Dec 13th. 1930. Washington D.C." The rear ffep and pastedown bear 8 small spots of glue residue and remnant print where it appears that a clipped newsprint article may have been previously affixed. The dust jacket is unclipped, still bearing the $3.50 price and the front face remains notably bright, but the jacket does show significant wear and losses, as well as the usual toning of the spine. There is an irregular 1.75 inch loss at the base of the spine, minor losses at the spine head, and chipping to both edges of the rear face as well as the front hinge. Old cello tape reinforcement that we have not attempted to remove was applied to the entire top and bottom edges. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.

Printed errata slip tipped in at page VII. Fourteen tables in text; seventeen tables in appendices; fifty-eight charts in text, including three fold-out. Textblock is clean. Inscribed on the front free endpaper "To Mr. Oswald T. Falk with compliments Irving Fisher", dated March 1930. Oswald Toynbee Falk (1879-1972) was a stockbroker and economist, known to his friends as "Foxy". After graduation, he went into the actuarial profession, becoming a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, but only remained until 1914. He then became a member of the London stock exchange, becoming a junior partner in a prominent stockbrokers, Buckmaster & Moore, by 1918. In 1917, he had been asked by J.M Keynes to join his division of the Treasury. In 1919, he joined the Treasury, and Keynes, at the Paris Peace Conference. He was created a Commander of the British Empire in 1920. Around this time, he became a senior partner at Buckmasters, and became known for his style of financial advising, which he called "active investment". He achieved massive gains, but also extremely heavy losses, even personally having to sell his country home. In February of 1932 he resigned from Buckmasters to create O.T. Falk & Partners. Falk's relationship with Keynes grew especially close, and he acted as Keynes broker and co-theorizer. The worked together on the Boards of numerous businesses, such as the National Mutual Life Assurance Society. In 1930, the friendship was dampened by a difference of opinion regarding British Industry versus American Industry. However, Falk was still the instigator of many of Keynes theories, and a fixed respect endured. Previously a part of the Gerald M. Meier library, the Konosuke Matsushita Professor of International Economics and Policy Analysis, Emeritus, at Stanford Graduate School of Business. A fantastic copy with an impressive association!.
