The Theory of Interest; as determined by Impatience to spend income and Opportunity to invest it

New York: The Macmillan Company,, 1930. Octavo. Original dark blue fine-ribbed cloth, spine lettered in gilt and with single gilt rules at head and tail, front cover blocked in blind. With 3 folding tables. Printed errata slip tipped-in at page vii. Boards slightly at upper edge, occasional minor foxing; an excellent copy in the price-clipped jacket with toned spine. First edition, first printing, of Fisher's Theory of Interest, a revised version of his earlier book The Rate of Interest (1907). Dedicated to John Rae and Böhm-Bawerk, it is a further development of their ideas: "its greatness as a book lies wholly in its outstanding pedagogic qualities ... [which] amounted to the demonstration that the real rate of interest is determined by both demand and supply, by the demand for production and consumption loans on the one hand and the supply of savings on the other" (Blaug, Great Economists before Keynes, p. 79).

A Map of Berkeley, Oakland, & Alameda. Pictorial envelope title:This is a Section of the Map of Alameda County showing Some of the Early Histories of Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda and Environs with Special References to the Flora & Fauna of this most colorfu

Berkeley, CA.: The Sather Gate Book Shop.. No date. Ca. 1930?. Color pictographic / pictorial map poster, 34 1/2 by 42 3/4 inches folding, professionally mounted on linen. Infill painting of little loss at fold intersections, infill of pinhole at each corner, only visible on the closest of inspections. Bright and clean. Together with the COLOR PICTORIAL ENVELOPE into which the poster was originally folded (tears and little paper loss to edges). Fabulous Art Deco style map by Michael Baltekal Goodman, notable for its brilliant color and striking design. The minimalist design of the street layout at the centre of the map is in stark contrast to the blue pattern of the sea at lower left and the rich greens, reds and oranges of the inland area at upper right. The names of several of the main streets are featured in scrolls, also historical events and important places such as Oakland Municipal Airport. Many buildings are featured in elevations; meanwhile vessels, ancient and contemporary, sail the harbour. Wind cherubs at the corners hark back to ancient maps as does the mythical sea creature at lower right. In the elaborate border are vignette images of historial events. The map was produced in collaboration with Eugene (Eugen) Neuhaus, the California painter and teacher. At the centre of the upper border a quotation proclaims the glory of San Francisco in the westward push of the nation: the best is last; it seems likely that the artist mapmaker had the intention of making this map of San Francisco the most glorious in scale and color of the several maps of American cities that had been published in the late 1920s under the influence of MacDonald Gill's Wonderground map. .

        The Works

New York: Doubleday, Doran & Co.,, 1930. The Crowborough Edition. 24 volumes, octavo. Recent brown crushed morocco, raised bands to spines, titles and central tools to compartments gilt, single frames to boards gilt, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, marbled endpapers. Photogravure frontispiece portrait by Pirie MacDonald to Volume I. Occasional unopened folds. Tissue guard in Volume I partially loose, light dampstains along lower gutter and margin of the text block of a few volumes. Otherwise an excellent set. First complete collected edition, number 663 of 760 numbered sets signed by the author in volume I. The Crowborough edition—named after the Sussex town where Doyle's home, Windlesham, was located—has double the number of volumes of the Author's Edition of 1903. Doyle had already signed sheets for it but his illness and death on 7 July 1930 prevented him seeing final publication of the work, and so it belongs to that select category, the posthumous signed limited edition. The introductions are reprinted from the Author's Edition, and the text is set from the existing editions without any corrections.

With which are also printed The Hamlet Stories from Saxo Grammaticus and Belleforest and English translations therefrom. Illustrated by Edward Gordon Craig, and printed by Count Harry Kessler at the Cranach Press, Weimar. Folio (355 × 240 mm). Original japon vellum-backed Kessler binding, beige paper to covers, vellum tips, titles gilt to spine and front board, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Title page designed by Eric Gill and 91 woodcut designs (two with colour) by Edward Gordon Craig in the text. Spine very slightly darkened, a couple of small spots to boards, and a short closed tear to head of front joint. An excellent copy in a slightly rubbed and worn slipcase. First English edition, first impression, preceded by the German-language edition published by Kessler in 1929. Limited to 300 numbered copies printed on Maillol hand-made paper, this copy was printed out-of-series for the German proof-reader Dr. H. Wengler of Dresden and was not for sale. The volume combines the magisterial scholarship of J. Dover Wilson, juxtaposing a number of Hamlet variants, with the extraordinary illustrations by Edward Gordon Craig (described by the London Times as being "brilliant and original" enough to "mak[e] one long to see Hamlet staged by Mr Craig"), in a beautiful Kessler binding. The A. Horne Dictionary of 20th-century British Book Illustrators (p. 154) asserts that "The Cranach 'Hamlet' is one of the most striking and imaginative works of the twentieth century".

A collection of 18 personal New Year greetings etchings and drypoints by Troy Kinney 1916-1937

1930. Troy Kinney. A grouping of etchings and drypoints of various dancers created by Troy, and used by Troy and his wife Margaret as New Year greetings. The earliest, 1916, depicts a pre-Revolutionary couple in a minuet style dance. Through the years the portrayals included ballerinas, mythical satyrs, classical and whimsical risqué ballerinas, Russian dancers and exotic dancers. For a number of years, following the move to Connecticut, a whimsical ballerina was portrayed doing various household chores from chopping wood to stoking a fire. Several signed in pencil. Some with brief New Year greetings. The only indication as to the recipients is a “Dear Anna & Nat” at the base of one card. Each measures approx 5 ½” x 4 ½”. Some mounted or with mats. Troy Kinney ((Kansas City, 1871 - Falls Village, Connecticut, 1938) was most notable for his works portraying dance performers, fanciful subjects, and classically styled nudes. He worked with dance performers, including Ruth St. Denis, Anna Pavlova, and Sophie Pflanz among others. He co-authored with his wife the books "Social Dancing of Today" and "The Dance: Its Place in Art and Life", for which he traveled throughout the world to study various dance styles. It remains to this day one of the most comprehensive works on the subject. Kinney's original drypoints and etchings are now included in the collections of the Library of Congress, Washington, DC., the Chicago Art Institute, the Cleveland Museum and the New York Public Library.

La tradición de América. Su valoración subjetiva. Prólogo del Excmo. Duque de Alba, Buenos Aires, (Junta de Historia y Numismática, Col. “Biblioteca”, tomo VIII, “El Ateneo” Casa editora), 1930.

[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
