After an attempt at his own business in the 1930s, Tooley rejoined Francis Edwards following World War II. Tooley devoted much of his time to the history of cartography and was considered an authority on early maps and cartographers. He authored multiple books on the subject and founded the Map Collectors' Circle, which published a series of monographs on historical cartography from 1963-1975. The festschrift, My Head is a Map, compiled in 1973 for his 75th birthday by British Library Map Librarians Helen Wallis and Sarah Tyacke, celebrated his contributions to the world of antiquarian maps.

        Moby Dick: Or, the Whale

New York: Random House, 1930 Illustrated by Rockwell Kent. First edition. Publisher's black cloth boards, with lettering and whale illustrations stamped in metallic silver; in the original gray pictorial dust jacket, with the same whale illustrations to the front panel and spine in black and blue, lettered in black. Book fine; unclipped dust jacket, with some shallow chips to the spine ends, small chip very slightly affecting the title lettering, minor toning to the spine, minor split to the front hinge at the spine head, two tiny holes to the rear panel at the edges, otherwise bright and clean panels. Overall, a very good and pleasing copy in an unsophisticated dust jacket. One of the great American novels, Moby Dick is narrated by Ishmael, a sailor on the Pequod. The ship is led by the tyrannical Captain Ahab who is consumed by his thirst for revenge on a ferocious sperm whale named Moby Dick. The novel employs a symbolic use of the color white - an expansion upon Melville's similar symbolism in his 1850 novel White-Jacket. Melville wrote Moby Dick as his friendship with fellow American Renaissance author Nathaniel Hawthorne was developing and dedicated the book to him. In 1926, prolific illustrator and artist Rockwell Kent was commissioned to illustrate Richard Henry Dana, Jr.'s Two Years Before the Mast, but the artist declined, choosing instead to create illustrations for Moby Dick. Kent was given full artistic license, which he used to create a now iconic series of woodcut prints, including the matching covers and dust jacket. After critics rediscovered the text in the 1920s, Rockwell's illustrated edition helped accelerate the renewed appreciation of Moby Dick that helped establish it as a crowning achievement in American Romantic and Renaissance writing.. Illus. by Kent, Rockwell. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

        THE LINK

Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., 1930., 1930. First U.S. edition. The author's third book, and the third Colonel Anthony Gethryn mystery. Fine, bright copy in striking dust jacket. 20th Century Crime & Mystery Writers says, "A Gethryn mystery set in a country village with a veterinary surgeon as the principal character, and undoubtedly one of the most ingeniously contrived crimes in detective fiction." When the body of Lord Grenville was found on the doorstep of the Moon public house with a bullet through his head, it seemed quite obvious that the inn-keeper was the murderer. After all, he'd been overheard arguing with Lord Grenville shortly before his dead body was found. But Colonel Anthony Gethryn thinks that it's a bit too obvious and wonders what the silver sand was doing on the back of the murdered man's coat??? Beautiful copy. Crime Club title.
