Paris: Hours Press, 1930. Original stapled red wraps lettered in black. One of only 300 copies, this being no. 250. Original wraparound band announcing this as the winner, judged by Nancy Cunard and Richard Aldington, of an award for the best piece on the subject of time. Wraparound band a little darkened at edges, wraps a little sunned at edges. Very light foxing throughout. This is Beckett's first published work and the myth is that it was shoved under Cunard's door just before midnight at the deadline and of course it won and started one of the great literary careers of the 20th century. A very good copy. . 1st. Wraps. Very Good. Tall Octavo.

        Memoir on a trans-Neptunian planet.Lynn, Mass.: T. P. Nichols & Son, 1915.

First edition of Lowell's prediction of the existence of a planet beyond the orbit of Neptune, which initiated the search that culminated in 1930 with the discovery of Pluto. "More than any other astronomer of his generation, Percival Lowell (1855-1916) had a profound influence on the general public. His thesis that the planet Mars was the abode of intelligent life continued to excite the public mind decades after his death... Lowell's name is also forever linked with Pluto; although he did not live to see that distant planet, there is no doubt that his inspiration advanced the date of its detection by many years" (DSB).

"As early as 1902, Lowell was lecturing and writing about his conviction that a planet existed beyond the orbit of Neptune. He had studied the orbits of a number of comets and had noticed gaps and groupings which he felt were significant. In 1905, the first of his two extended searches for "Planet X" began. This phase lasted until 1909, and was essentially carried out by Lowell, a trio of graduate assistants and William T. Carrigan, a "computer" from the US Naval Observatory's Nautical Almanac Office in Washington DC. Lowell employed Carrigan to perform a number of calculations on the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. Lowell was interested in "residuals," differences between the calculated positions of the planets and the positions which were actually observed.

"Lowell's second search spanned the years 1910-1915. This search was based upon calculations using the formulae of celestial mechanics. In essence, it was similar to the predictions of Adams and Le Verrier [for the orbit of Neptune], but using residuals which were much smaller. The calculations, thus, were much more difficult and involved. This search culminated in the publication entitled "Memoir on a Trans-Neptunian Planet," in Memoirs of the Lowell Observatory, vol. 1, 1915" (Bakich, p. 299). Just before submitting his paper, Lowell wrote to his chief observer at Flagstaff, "I am giving my work before the Academy on January 13. It would be thoughtful of you to announce discovery at the same time." No discovery was made however and, as Lowell's brother later wrote, "That X was not found was the sharpest disappointment of his life." Ironically, it is now known that on the nearly 1000 photographic plates exposed during his second search were two images of Pluto!

"At about the same time as Lowell's observations were being carried out, William Henry Pickering (1858-1938) of the Harvard College Observatory made a series of published predictions of trans-Neptunian planets based upon his own calculations. The first report appeared in 1908 [sic]" (ibid.). An offprint of this report accompanies the offered paper ('A search for a planet beyond Neptune,' in Annals of the Astronomical Observatory of Harvard College, Vol. LXI - Part II, 1909).

In January 1929 Clyde W. Tombaugh (1906- ) joined the staff at the Lowell Observatory, with the task of finding Planet X. He used a new technique, namely comparing two plates taken some time apart by "blinking", that is shining a light successively through one plate and then the other so that objects on both plates remained steady while an object on one plate but not the other blinked. He found Planet X on 18 February 1930 and after repeated verification the discovery was announced on 13 March, 149 years to the day after Herschel's discovery of Uranus. In May the Lowell Observatory proposed the name Pluto for Planet X, appropriately incorporating Lowell's initials into its name.

M. E. Bakich, The Cambridge Planetary Handbook, 2000; P. M. Sadler, 'William Pickering's Search for a Planet Beyond Neptune,' Journal for the History of Astronomy, Vol. 21 (1990), pp. 59-64.. Offprint from Memoirs of the Lowell Observatory, Vol. 1, No. 1. 4to (311 x 235 mm), pp. 105 with nine plates (two double-page). Original printed wrappers, lower capital with small loss
