Original Portrait Photograph of a Young Boy

Lovely silver print portrait photograph Signed by Beaton. An approximately 9" x 12" image on 13.75" x 22" mount. Boldly Signed by Beaton ("Beaton") in red on the mount. Fine condition. Undated but circa 1930. The subject was the scion of a newspaper family on the Philadelphia Main Line named Peter Strassburger. His estate, along with this photograph, was sold at auction nearly two decades ago. Much of Beaton's work consists of smaller prints, and much is often unsigned. A lovely image. .

Scrap Book of Dance Marathon Participant Mel Hildebrand

1930. Oblong folio. Yellow and blue cloth over boards with (worn) embossed crest of Camden (New Jersey) High School. Disbound. A well worn scrapbook of mementos compiled by dance marathon contestant Mel Hildebrand. Much of the material has become detached from the pages where they were mounted, but seemingly all of it is present, with many additional items laid in. Overall fair condition, although the detached photos and scraps are usually near fine. The album includes 64 photographs, mostly of dancers, and mostly signed - several of these have been trimmed to fit in the album. They include Dance Marathon judges Dick Layer and Ernie Bernard; promoters R. Dunlap and H.J. Ross; and a large portrait of Hildebrand wearing a "Miami Athletics" sweater that is captioned, "This is the number I wore through the entire dance in Miami, Fla. 1930-'31. Mel." Among the group are several shots of dancers that have been captioned by hand. Also tipped-in are many clippings and news stories about the various dances and dancers, including advertisements, a story (possibly apocryphal) of Hildebrand inheriting $50,000 while on the dance floor, but continuing on with the competition. Also a telegram and letters from admirers wishing him luck with the dance; several commercial images and postcards, mostly of Atlantic City; a ticket to the Cinderella Ball Room in Miami, good for "one dance", and other assorted ephemera. While Dance Marathon contestants, either professional or amateur, competed to win the contest in order to take home the big prize, they also found many collateral methods of making additional money during the contest: selling souvenir programs, printed newsletters, photographs of themselves which they would autograph, etc. This scrapbook was compiled by Hildebrand, with this handwritten explanation written on one of the leaves: "Dear Friends: In this book is my collection of pictures and news of Marathons. It has taken a long time to gather together this data. I will appreciate it if you will handle this as though it were your own. Thank you, Mel Hildebrand. Buffalo, New York." However, Mel was not without a pecuniary motive. On the inside of the rear board is affixed an envelope with the following message: "If you have enjoyed looking at my scraps a small piece of silver would be greatly appreciated. Your friend, Mel. Thank You."Hildebrand is mentioned in the clippings in the book as being from Buffalo, Detroit, or Miami. Most of the scraps and photos in the album seem related to three particular Marathons: the Cinderella Ball Room in Miami in 1930-31; the "Mad Marathon" at Carlin's Park in Baltimore in 1931; and a second Mad Marathon Dance at Olympic Hall on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City. The dance marathon craze was a product of the late 1920s and early 1930s, fueled by the desire for spectacle and a surfeit of available personnel during the Depression. The picture one takes away from this album is that Dance Marathons were a reasonably well organized show business enterprise, albeit one that thrived because of human frailty. June Havoc, Red Skelton, Frankie Laine, and Antia O'Day all performed as professional marathon dancers. By the mid-1930s half of the states in the union had passed bans or limits on Dance Marathons. While Dance Marathons existed as a competitive activity from the early 1920s until around 1950, this album represents the absolute height of the craze, that culminated in the 1935 publication of Horace McCoy's novel They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and the autobiographical play Marathon '33 that chronicled the actress June Havoc's experience as a 14-year-old contestant. An album by a participant in one of the more curious fads and crazes of the Great Depression. While an occasional dancer's photo will appear on the market, little primary source material and only a few printed sources for this activity are ever offered for sale.

        Good-Bye To All That.

Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith, New York 1930 - First American edition. Octavo, original red cloth. Advanced copy in the dust jacket without the price and the Paris Gun listed on the back flap, "To be published in February Probable Price, $3.50". Near fine in a very good dust jacket with some wear to the crown and foot of the spine. Good-Bye to All That bids farewell not only to England and his English family and friends, but also to a way of life. Tracing his upbringing from his solidly middle-class Victorian childhood through his entry into the war at age twenty-one as a patriotic captain in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, this dramatic, poignant, often wry autobiography goes on to depict the horrors and disillusionment of the Great War, from life in the trenches and the loss of dear friends, to the stupidity of government bureaucracy and the absurdity of English class stratification. Paul Fussell has hailed it as "the best memoir of the First World War." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        A HAIR DIVIDES.

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, [1930]. - First edition. Signed by the author. Fine, bright, tight copy in a fine dust jacket. This is the story of a friendship between two unusual men. Its tragic culmination provides not only a study in fear but a mystery in terms of motives, which elevates the book to a lofty level rarely attained by most stories. The first part of the book is set in 1910, and the second part in 1930, and the story bridges the most critical epoch in the history of England. The author presents not only two different time periods, but two different worlds, where episode after episode reveals the dramatic transition from the solidity of 1910 to the chaotic possibilities of 1930. An exceptional copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Memories of Early Days in Photograph (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)

Salt Lake City, Utah: Self Published, 1930. Photograph Album. Fine. Photograph album in slipcase, approximately 7" x 10.5". Approximately 200 photographs ranging in size from 1" x 1.5" to approximately 5" x 7". Photographs, album, and slipcase are in excellent condition. The album was made by John F. Bennett in the 1930s. Bennett, who apprenticed with the famous Mormon photographer C. R. Savage, was the driving force behind the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' acquisition of George Edwards Anderson's massive collection of historic photographs and negatives (made by Anderson, Savage, William H. Jackson, Junius F. Wells, and Charles W. Carter) relating to the Mormon Church and the settlement of Utah. During the acquisition process, Bennet duplicated some of the images and, with them, created several custom-made photograph albums for long-time friends. Unfortunately, the church's historical division destroyed or sold the collection of negatives after they had been microfilmed, so it is likely that many of the images in Bennet's albums are the best extant. The Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University notes that the images in a custom-made Bennett album are "some of the most notable images depicting the pioneer movement to the Salt Lake Valley and the development of Salt Lake City." Other photographs in the album depict church leaders. Some of the specific photos in this album include: Sacred Grove at Palmyra NY, Hill Cumorah, Independence Rock in Western Wyoming, Ft. Bridger, Wagons in route to Utah, Handcart emigration, Seagulls at Salt Lake, Re-enactment photos from the Jubilee of 1897, Surviving pioneers in 1897, Soldiers in Johnson's Army, Union and Central Pacific photos including the meeting at Promontory Point, Garfield Resort and Boat Garfield, Saltier Resort, many Salt Lake City street scenes and building views beginning in 1853, all the wives of Brigham Young, Beehive and Lion House, Eagle Gate, Dedication of the Brigham Young Monument, Salt Lake City Tabernacle with Organ and Choir including construction photos, church leaders including Presidents and members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, a four-fold composite photo of a map showing the journey from Navoo to the Salt Lake, and more. This is an exceptional collection of photographs. As of 2014, WorldCat's Archivegrid locates only four similar custom-made Bennet; three belong to the Church of Latter Day Saints Historical Department and one is in the Harold B. Lee Library. No auction records found at AmericanaExchange or American Book Prices Current. Very scarce.
