A small group of autograph musical manuscripts in the hand of the noted film composer

1930s or later 1930 - "Nobody's Sweetheart Now," a 1923 song by a team of authors including Elmer Schoebel (1896-1970), is a pop standard. The other two songs are considered jazz standards: "Some of These Days" was written by Shelton Brooks (1886-1975) and popularized by Sophie Tucker's 1911 recording; "Dinah," by Harry Akst (1894-1963) was first introduced in 1923 and remained highly popular throughout the 1920s and 1930s. "Train from the West" is most likely from a film score; the style of manuscript and the quality of paper of "Sapphire" suggest that this fragment belongs to an unknown arrangement from Raksin's very early years."Mr. Raksin began piano lessons at 6 but later switched to the saxophone. At 12, he was leading a small dance band, which he expanded in high school for broadcasting on the local CBS station. He taught himself orchestration in high school and while majoring in music composition at the University of Pennsylvania played in society bands and radio orchestras." The Los Angeles Times, August 9, 2004, obituary for Raksin by Dennis McLellan. "In 1935 Raksin went to Hollywood to work with Charlie Chaplin on the music for Modern Times. This collaboration yielded one of the most effective original scores ever written for a silent film. Raksin settled permanently in Los Angeles in 1937, working in the Hollywood studios as a composer, arranger and/or orchestrator and studying privately with Schoenberg. Raksin's unusually complex textures and harmonies typecast him as a specialist in horror films and mystery, but he was adept in other genres, including westerns and comedies. In the early 1940s Raksin was employed at Fox, for whom he wrote the score to Laura (1944). One of his most original and enduring works, the film's reputation as a classic owes much to the haunting score; at its heart is Raksin's elusive melody for the title character which, remarkably, is never completed. The theme was a great popular success as a song (lyrics by Johnny Mercer), became a jazz standard and is one of the most performed and recorded of all film themes. Raksin worked regularly as a film composer until the early 1970s; his body of about 100 scores includes perhaps some 20 works that rank among Hollywood's very best." Martin Marks in Grove onlineRare autograph examples dating from the early years of one of America's great film composers. 1. Fair copy of tenor saxophone chorus part of three standards arranged (not composed) by Raksin. Folio (319 x 241 mm.). 3 pp. of a bifolium. Notated in ink on 12-stave music paper "Parchment Brand No. 3" issued by Belwin Inc, New York. P. 1: "Nobody's Sweetheart now," dated "September 1931"; p. 2: "Some of These Days," dated "Sept. 1931"; p. 3: "Dinah," dated "August, 1931" at conclusion. With inscription to head of p. 1: "To the best Tenor Sax Man I know. Tony from Dave Raksin," signed again and dated Sept. 27, 1931 at foot. Somewhat browned and soiled, especially at spine. Slightly frayed at edges; minor paper repair.2. 1st alto saxophone part for "Sapphire." Octavo (242 x 172 mm.). 2ff. written on one side only. Notated in pencil on 10-stave music paper "Clarke's Music Tablet" issued by Theodore Presser Co., Philadelphia. Incomplete; part breaks off at the end of p. 2 after 85 measures. No signature or date. Stapled at upper left corner; creased and frayed at edges.3. Tenor saxophone part (in B-flat) of an arrangement of Frédéric Chopin's Prelude op. 28 no. 4 in E minor. Folio (319 x 241 mm.). Notated in ink on one side of the leaf only on 12-stave music paper. The part is written out twice, with minimal differences: in the second version, some enharmonic spellings have been corrected, but a "p[iano]" and "smorz." in the final measures are lacking. The first version is quite clear, but the heading, "Prelude – Chopin E. Minor" is written in haste and the instrument not specified. The second version, headed "Tenor Sax Prelude – E Minor Chopin," bears all signs of a fair copy. No signature or date. Minor repair to lef [Attributes: Signed Copy]

[Op. 32]. Von heute auf morgen Oper in einem Akt von Max Blonda Musik von Arnold Schönberg Klavierauszug

Im Selbstverlag des Komponisten Auslieferung und Bühnenvertrieb Edition Benno Balan, Berlin=Charlottenburg 4 [without PN] [1930]. Folio. Original publisher's wrappers printed in blue. [i] (title), [ii] (list of characters, list of orchestral instruments, instructions for performance), [3]-140 pp. Facsimile of copyist's manuscript. Copyright notice to lower left corner of p. 3: "Copyright 1930 by Arnold Schönberg, Berlin." Printed note to lower right corner of last page of music: "Schrift und Druck Rokodruck, Berlin." Titling of upper wrapper identical with title except lacking imprint. Wrappers soiled; corners slightly chipped.. Second edition. Rufer (Engl.) pp. 58-60. Ringer p. 317. Tetsuo Satoh pp. 23-24. The manuscript on which the edition is based is lost. The first edition, from 1929, lacks the reference to Edition Benno Balan in the imprint and carries a typeset copyright notice dated 1929. It is also a facsimile, but is based on a different, partially autograph, manuscript. Max Blonda is a pseudonym of Schoenberg's (second) wife, Gertrud, nee Kolisch (1898-1967). Von heute auf morgen is Schoenberg's first opera and also the first dodecaphonic opera by any composer. "For Schönberg it was the twelve-tone system that held the key to the future, and in 'Von heute auf morgen' he was seeking to prove that that key was not incompatible with popular success. The 1930 performances at the Frankfurt Opera and over the radio disappointed the composer. His hopes for popular success were not realized. Within two months of the premiere Schönberg was to pen the rather defensive essay 'My Public,' an essay in which he argues that 'expert judges'-principally conductors, performers, and others with influence in the musical world-are to blame for the lack of understanding of his music."         The Edge of the Unknown

John Murray, London, 1930., 1930. First Edition. SCARCE- only 909 copies were published. 8vo, pps. (vii) +332. A fine copy in gilt titled dark blue cloth clad in a very good, clean dustwrapper with some slight chipping and trivial loss to the extremities. A very pretty copy of Doyle's collection of spiritualist essays, including not only the fabulous posthumous meanderings of Oscar Wilde ("I was the medium through which beauty filtered...") but also the original laid in publisher's four page Doyle catalogue citing the author as "a good nourisher of Englishmen." High praise indeed. A collection of weird and wonderful supernatural tales and stories of a spiritualist nature reappearing in this first book form edition, some having previously materialised in periodicals. Includes 'Notes From a Strange Mail Bag', 'The Ghost of the Moat', 'Dwellers on the Border', 'A Strange Prophet' and 'A Rift in the Veil'. When his son Kingsley died from wounds incurred in the Great War, Conan Doyle dedicated himself to spiritualistic studies; both 'The Coming of Fairies' (1922) and 'The Edge of the Unknown' (1930) are examples, but he had already showed interest in supernatural fantasy before publishing the Sherlockian stories; in his early novel, 'The Mystery of Cloomber'(1888), a retired general finds himself under assault by Indian magic.         THE SUN ALSO RISES

[New York]: Grosset & Dunlap, [N.D. but published 1930]. First Grosset & Dunlap Edition. Octavo; black silk-finish cloth, with red title labels printed in black on spine and front panel ; red topstain; 259pp. Discreet owners name to upper front endpaper, with gentle nudging to base of spine; very Near Fine, with a bright, even topstain. Dustjacket is lightly rubbed, with faint sunning to spine and a 1.25" closed tear at upper rear panel; bright, Very Good+ example, without loss. Hemingway's great 'Lost Generation' novel about a group of American and British expatriates who travel from Paris to Spain. The pictorial jacket, which depicts a flapper in a sleeveless green dress, was reportedly Hemingway's favorite among all his books, and he was quoted saying he preferred it to that of the original edition published by Scribner's. A stunning copy of a key Hemingway title, and a high-point of Art Deco dustjacket design. Cited as one of Cyril Connolly's 100 Key Books of the Modern Movement, and basis for the 1957 Henry King film starring Tyrone Power, Errol Flynn, and Ava Gardner. Hanneman A6c.

        Redimiculum Matellarum

Milan: [For the author], 1930. Octavo. Single quire, wire stitched in laid paper wrappers printed in black and orange. Housed in a black flat-back cloth solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. A few nicks and marks to the wrappers but an excellent copy. First and only edition of the author's rare first book. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the first leaf, "To T. W. Earp from Basil Bunting 1930" The recipient was a poet and noted translator who had been a contemporary of Tolkien's at Oxford and who with Dorothy L Sayers had edited the Oxford Poetry annual for 1918. Despite these and numerous other literary achievements Earp was forever immortalised as the etymological progenitor of the slang word Twerp as defined in the OED. Privately printed in Milan and one of the true rarities of 20th century poetry. A letter exists in which Bunting recalls there having only been some 150 copies printed. In our experience such a small number seems likely since very few copies have ever been offered for sale.

        Moby Dick or The Whale

Chicago: The Lakeside Press,, 1930. Illustrated by Rockwell Kent. 3 volumes, quarto. Original black cloth, decoration to the upper boards and titles to spines in silver, top edges stained black, others uncut. In the original acetate dust jackets with paper flaps. With the aluminium slipcase. Illustrated throughout by Rockwell Kent. From the library of the hi-fi audio pioneer Saul B. Marantz (1911-1997), with presentation inscription on the front free endpaper of volume I. Spine very lightly sunned, light offsetting from illustrations to facing pages (as usual). An excellent set. First Rockwell Kent edition, limited to 1,000 sets; one of the finest editions of Melville's masterpiece and one of the great American illustrated books of the 20th century. In 1926 Rockwell Kent (1882?-1971), then just beginning to establish his fame as an artist, was approached by R. R. Donnelley and Sons to illustrate a new edition of Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast. Kent demurred, suggesting Moby Dick instead. Kent was given complete freedom to design and illustrate the three-volume set. The resulting work has been hailed as a masterpiece of 20th-century book illustration and credited with reviving public interest in a sublime but difficult novel.
