        Diamant Brokat - Gold Brokat.

. Two trade catalogues showing wallpaper samples from the thirties. No publisher nor date, Germany ca. 1930. Two oblong 8vo trade sample catalogues, containing over 250 sample sheets of wallpaper in various colourful designs. In original stiff wrappers with gilt title.l Very diverse and bright samples. Some of them would certainly be very fashionable again today. We could not find any information about which firm issued these catalogues. It seems that this was a luxurious line of wallpapers, since the designs are often very artistically composed. This is underlined by the words "Marke Excellenz" on the covers. Wrappers slightly worn on corners, samples all clean and bright and in mint condition..

- Gutekunst & Klipstein, Dokumentations-Bibliothek (I) 147: Von grosser Seltenheit; Gershman S. 56. - Gebräunt, stockfleckig, Bugfalten fachmännisch restauriert. The second pamphlet was arranged by a number of disaffected surrealists, sharply criticizing the movement's leader, Andre Breton, in response to criticism Breton made in his Secon Surrealist Manifesto. The Manifesto, published in December 1929, directly criticized certain members of the movement and attempted to set the course for future group activities. The Second Manifesto attacked individuals who were already moving away from Breton, and can be regarded both as his way of formalizing the break[2] and attacking Georges Bataille, who he feared was starting an anti-surrealist movement. The pamphlet Un Cadavre contained short essays by a number of those Breton criticized, many of whom he had formally expelled from the movement for reasons seemingly contrary to its goals, which in hindsight appear to be more a result of his famously imperious pride. For example, according to the Second Manifesto, the prose writer Georges Limbour was expelled for 'literary coquetry in the worst sense of the word, a reason that emphasizes Breton's rigid disdain for literature, as opposed to poetry. Another major reason for division in the group was its increasingly politicized position, which tended toward Marxism. The pamphlet included essays by Bataille, Limbour, Robert Desnos, Raymond Quenau, Michel Leiris, Alejo Carpentier, Jacques Baron, Jacques Prevert, Roger Vitrac, Max Morise, Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes und Jacques-Andre Boiffard.

Original etching by Schaldach and 64 plates (5 in color) by Lyn Bogue Hunt, Edmund Burke, Schaldach, A. B. Frost, et. al. xxiv, [iii], 249 pp. 1 vols. 4to. Three quarter chestnut morocco and cloth over boards, spine gilt with sporting vignettes and title, t.e.g., others uncut. Some minor rubbing to corners, else a fine copy (largely unopened). With small label numbered 1155 on flyleaf identifying it as Peter Widener's and The Crossroads of Sports Label on the pastedown. RARE PRESENTATION BINDING Siegel notes, "Some of America's most knowledgeable sportsmen were contributing authors to this excellent and timeless work" and Frazier states, "Certainly one of the handsomest of the great big beautiful Derrydales that Connett produced ... one of the most ambitious projects that [he] attempted." One of the most highly sought-after of Derrydale titles. This publisher's presentation copy is in a three-quarter chestnut morocco binding of the type produced for Connett by MacDonald, indisputably an unrecorded variant binding. Frazier's copy (not mentioned in his bibliography) had a note from an earlier bookseller stating that only ten copies were done thus, for the illustrators.

        ARCHIVOS MUSICALES ].

Barcelona, 1879-1930. Photo Album - Views of Peking, Silk Factories, Buddhist & Civilian Customs

China, 1930. Peking (Beijing), circa 1930. Album of photographs from a visit to Peking featuring unique views of the Summer Palace, as well as special attention to Buddhist and civilian custom. Contains 43 photographs, including 1 large photograph by White Brothers, mounted with corners onto black cardstock leaves separated with webbed tissue guards. Oblong 8vo. string-tied cloth album measuring approximately 32 x 23.5 cm. Photographs vary in size, most measuring approximately 14 x 8.5 cm, and the largest 24,. x 18.5 cm. Very Good Condition, excellent crisp images. With a keen eye for capturing the essence of indigenous life in China's long-standing cardinal city, interest in this album is three-fold and presents splendidly uncommon scenes from nearly a century past. The foreigner evidently held a special appreciation for Buddhist custom, seizing the unique opportunity to observe monks gathering at temples and performing an exercise in a temple courtyard. Photographs of the ascetic monks are quite uncommon for the period. At the Yonghe Temple (Yonghe Lamasery, or popularly "Lama Temple") he also photographs the urn-like structure in its courtyard. Shrines and deity statues and other motifs depict various aspects of the nontheistic religion or Dharma. Striking photographs also capture the routines and craftsmanship of regular civilian families as they wash door panels in the river, travel on the city's canal system in sampans, and on mules in outlying regions, for example. Especially fascinating is an elderly man constructing a sampan by hand, a modest funeral procession transporting a covered sedan, women and children working at a silk reeling factory, and a street juggler. [In the early 1930s, the Bank of China turned its attention to domestic production. Yarn, flour and silk consisted of China's three major industries, accounting for eighty percent of the total industrial loans.] An unusually thorough sojourn through the Summer Palace provides pleasingly ambient views of the courtyards, bridges and waterways, ancient architecture, pavillions, and famous arches. The album begins with a lovely view of the Dragon Wall at Winter Palace, the most famously known of only nine dragon walls in all of China. [Winter Palace is situated west of the northern gate of Beijing's Forbidden City.] Some other views include: • A terracota warrior statue on the road to the Ming Dynasty Tombs • Two Chinese junks on a river • The Lingxing Gates and Circular Mound Altar at the Temple of Heaven • A tall ornamental marble pillar as those found in the Forbidden City • A large sepia photograph shows the wear of time as the ruins of a stone and brick structure over water is being consumed by trees encroaching upon it • The entrance gate and the White Dagoba on Qionghua Island in Beihai Park (northwest of the Forbidden City) SS Mongolia (1922) was a steam turbine-driven twin-screw passenger-and-cargo ocean liner launched in 1922 for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) for service from the United Kingdom to Australia. Her sister ship was SS Manchuria. For most of her career she plied the India-China-Australia route. Later she was renamed the SS Europa and sailed around New Zealand and then as a cruise ship in the Caribbean. She was scrapped in 1963. White Brothers - The photographers of the copyrighted photograph are twin brothers born in Cooranbong, New South Wales, Australia, Herbert Clarence White (1896-1962) and James Henry White (1896-1954), sons of William C. White who in 1894 led the Australian Union, and his wife Ethel May (née Lacey) of Tasmania. When the twins were four years of age the family returned to California, being largely influenced by their grandparents, Ellen G. White and James White - founders of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church - especially Mrs. Ellen White who inspired and facilitated their careers in publishing and photography very early on. Having grown up in St. Helena, California, next to their grandmother Ellen G. White's Elmshaven home, and with equipment provided by her, together Herbert and James operated a print shop they called "The Elmshaven Press." Their endeavours taught them the printing trade and also paid for their academy and college. Upon entering college they moved their operation to Angwin, where it eventually became the Pacific Union College Press. Seemingly inseparable, both men lived and worked for several years in China, in missions, photography and publishing. James was a missionary in northern China, serving with his wife Margaret from 1921 to 1929. He also became a professional photographer in this time, travelling through China with his brother. Herbert arrived in China two years later than James, and managed the "Signs of the Time" publishing house in Shanghai, China, from 1923 to 1929. During this time he, too, became a professional photographer. In later years he made public lectures and operated his own business H.C. White Publications in Riverside, California. Together they published the following photographic work before leaving China: "Romantic China: An album containing forty-two photographic studies of China's historic monuments and charming beauty spots complete with descriptive and historical notes," Shanghai: Browhite Arts, 1930. Herbert earlier published, "Peking the Beautiful: comprising seventy photographic studies of the celebrated monuments of China's northern capital and its environs complete with descriptive and historical notes. With an Introduction by Hu Shih, former professor of philosophy at the National University of Peking." Shanghai: Commercial Press, 1927.. Very Good.
