        The Edge of The Unknown

New York, Putnam's. 1930, 39. First American edition: 8vo. Publisher's grey cloth titled in green to spine, near fine, minor edgewear and bumping to spine ends, clean and sharp. In an example of the scarce dustwrapper, somewhat worn to the edges with areas of shallow chiupping to the spine ends. Tape reinforcement to hinges and joints of dustwrapper. Internally clean, two bookseller labels to pastedown. Shows very well. Doyle explains his engagement with spiritualism and relates his fiery disagreement with the renowned showman and escapologist Houdini, a sceptic. The book is a testament to Doyle's belief in psychic revelation as well as an insight to the temper of the times. Houdini's supreme skill as an exponent of illusion was ironically the basis for his underhand attempts to expose those 'mediums' he perceived as charlatans.

Castle Gay. ( A Dickson McCunn story)

London, Hodder and Stoughton. 1930., 1930. FIRST EDITION, with SIGNED loose letter. 8vo. Publisher's dark green cloth, some bumping to spine, corners showing the unmistakeable evidence of being found attractive to the rodentine palate which has affected both book cloth and wrapper though not severely to their detriment. Some foxing, to endpapers and edges, a little dusty on the top. Wrapper has some closed tears and creasing to the top edge of the rear panel. Unfaded and only lightly soiled, a respectable copy with a laid in letter in Buchan's trademark scrawl from Elsfield Manor, written on the 11th of January 1933 and mentioning a young lady, a time and a railway station with some reference to the weather. Undoubtedly a code and almost certainly requiring the immediate attention of the Gorbals Die-Hards.

My Early Life, inscribed in the year of publication by Churchill to his teenage godson, finely bound in a matching clamshell preservation case

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1930. First edition, first printing. Half leather. This is the first edition, first printing, first state of Churchill's autobiography, inscribed by Churchill in the year of publication to his teenage godson. The inscription, inked in black in five lines on the blank endsheet preceding the half-title, reads: "To | Roger Frewen | from | Winston S. Churchill / Dec 1. 1930". We commissioned the binding in full plum calf, evoking the original binding color, with gilt decoration and print, raised spine bands, dark brown title and author panels, gilt top edge, and marbled paper endsheets. Roger Frewen's book plate was carefully recovered from the pastedown of the original binding and re-affixed to the new pastedown and a protective tissue cover was bound in preceding the inscribed page. A matching half-leather clamshell case is executed in the same plum calf as the binding (with marbled paper sides matching the volume's endsheets), leather corners, and the same spine design as the book. Roger d'Hauteville Moreton Frewen (1914-1972) was sixteen when he received this inscribed autobiography from his famous godfather. Roger was the son of Churchill's first cousin, Hugh Frewen, and grandson of Churchill's Aunt Clara, his mother's elder sister. Hugh's childhood was marked by visits with his Churchill and Leslie cousins, including Winston, who was nine years older than Hugh. Roger was born in London during the First World War while his father was serving on the front and Winston was First Lord of the Admiralty. Roger was educated in Switzerland and Cambridge. In 1933, just a few years after he received this inscribed copy, Roger suffered a near-fatal car accident. This and tuberculosis contracted during recovery permanently impaired his health. Nonetheless, Roger joined the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in 1938. Posted to the British Embassy in Berne during WWII, Roger listened to German and Italian military signals and reported information to Britain, drove lorries with military supplies through occupied France, and rescued escaped prisoners of war by crossing into Germany and Italy and bringing them to safety in Switzerland. Driven by income needs as his family grew, in the decades after the war Roger had careers in finance and real estate. Roger's son, Jonathan, from whom this book comes to us, recalls that Roger excelled at mathematics and languages and was "a kind man, an amusing raconteur... and a good Father." Jonathan also recalls that "Winston was an excellent godparent" who "never forgot a birthday or Christmas, no matter his duties." The Frewen collection includes books by Churchill inscribed to his godson spanning the 1930s to the 1950s. An inscribed copy of My Early Life made a fitting gift to a teenage godson. Originally published on 20 October 1930, My Early Life Covers the years spanning Churchill's birth in 1874 to his first few years in Parliament, including his time as an itinerant war correspondent and cavalry officer, his early years as an author, and his capture and daring escape during the Boer War. Churchill took some liberties with facts and perhaps deceptively lightened or over-simplified certain events, but this is forgivably in keeping with the wit, pace, and engaging style that characterize the book. Moreover, Churchill's style and liberties would have done nothing to diminish the book's appeal to his godson. The binding and matching preservation case are pristine. The contents are very good for the edition, with only modest intermittent spotting, mostly confined to the first and final leaves. First state of the first edition is confirmed by 11 titles on the half-title verso boxed list of works by the author. The inscription is modestly age-toned, but remains quite distinct. Some customary transfer from the original front pastedown glue left a faintly ghosted outline of Roger's bookplate just below Churchill's signature.         The History of the Peloponnesian War, translated into English by Benjamin Jowett.

Ashendene Press. 1930 - Publisher's full white pigskin, with pronounced spine bands. One of 260 copies printed on paper (an additional 20 copies were printed on vellum). Boards (see photographs) have some light scattered soil and small bruises, and a superficial but unsightly 8" diagonal line indented on rear board; otherwise, and with those faults, an outstanding copy with a virtually flawless interior. The design and production of this edition makes it one of the finest achievements of St John Hornby's Ashendene Press. It is at one and the same time opulent and modest, and there can surely be no more gratifying way to read Thucydides than in one of the rare copies of this edition. The translation by Jowett, who was master of Balliol and regius professor of Greek at Oxford is, of course, authoritative. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Kyoto: [ca. 1930]. |~||~||~||~||~| Only Edition of this eccentric Japanese book, published to showcase a Tudor-style mansion designed by William Merrell Vories for Shotaru Shimomura, the chairman of the Japanese department store chain Daimaru. The book is comprised of black and white tipped-in photographs of interior rooms, furniture, decorative elements, and exterior shots of this Western Tudor house built in Japan before the Second World War. Shimomura was also a keen photographer, and exhibited in the Ashiya photographic Salons of 1935, 1936, and 1937. Vories had gone to Japan as a missionary and started an architectural practice to help fund his missionary work. A precious, if somewhat exotic, object.

PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF ORIGINAL IMAGES OF SHANGHAI AND HONG KONG, TAKEN BY A BRITISH ARMY SOLDIER OF THE 1ST BATTALION, LINCOLNSHIRE REGIMENT, 1930-1932:; Sailing aboard the China Fleet flagship HMS Suffolk

1930 - This album contains 162 b&w vernacular photographs (2.75"x2" to 4"x6"), fixed with red photo mounts to both sides of heavy black leaves. Housed in a string-tied album, 10.25"x7.25"; old newspaper remnants on boards, internally clean and well-preserved. In addition to Shanghai and Hong Kong, some views may also have been taken in Wei Hai Wei (then a leased territory under British rule) and in Gibraltar, just before it was commissioned to China. Our unidentified soldier saw action in the "Shanghai January 28 Incident" during the Shanghai War of 1932. Photos there are taken from behind a sandbag barrier on a city street, with guns at the ready as the Sino-Japanese dispute unfolds. Also present are photographs of the Hankow barracks at Sham Shui Po, the camp in Kowloon which would later be used as a prison camp by the Japanese invaders in World War II. Other war-related images include firing practice, drills, trenching, and tent camps (in Gibraltar?). Also seen are the graves of fallen soldiers and Royal marines at the Hong Kong cemetery, and eight sun-toned photographs of the Suez Canal, the Port Said monument to Ferdinand de Lesseps, &c. ~~ Indigenous life and industry are seen in photographs of Chinese men using small hammers to chisel large stones into pebbles for building roads, in photos of unusual methods of conveyance, in a view of children playing at a riverside lumber yard, in a photograph of a woman with pole baskets--one holding harvested produce, the other holding her infant child, in views of the Great Wall, junks in the harbor, a soldier in a rickshaw, &c., &c. ~~ A memorialized photograph celebrates the HMS Suffolk leaving Shanghai for Hong Kong on 1 October 1932, after this lengthy patrol to Shanghai and the Yangtze delta.
