Ernst includes a line of ironically pretentious text with each image. This is number 232 of the edition of 1000 copies on Velin, inscribed by Paul Eluard "à Théo/ un jour de/ clergy/ un peu mal frotté/ bonjour/ Paul", (signed with Éluard's characteristic paraph).         THE ONE WHO IS LEGION OR A.D.'S AFTER-LIFE

London: Privately Subscribed by Eric Partridge Ltd [at the Scholartis Press], 1930.. Large octavo. Polished green buckram, lettered in gilt, t.e.g. Two plates. Cloth somewhat sunned and bubbled , otherwise very good, without dust jacket. First edition, one of 535 copies, from a total edition of 560 (525 for sale). With Barney's late presentation inscription: "To Bettina, my best reader & most charming friend ever her admirer Natalie / Paris 3 June | 63." The recipient, Elizabeth "Bettina" Bergery, was the American born and Paris-resident fashion designer, and wife of French politician and Vichy ambassador, Gaston Bergery. The two plates reproduce paintings by Romaine Brooks that she executed specifically for this work. One of Barney's most unusual works, and one of the handful of her original publications in English, THE ONE WHO IS LEGION is a stylistically unconventional novel, imbued with several gothic elements, concerning a suicide reincarnated as a sexually ambiguous hermaphrodite. It has considerable importance as a reflection of Brooks' influence in Barney's life, as well as of Barney's efforts to come to terms with Renée Vivien's death.

Insgesamt wohl erhalten. Rar. Polunbi 2, 96 ("unbrauchbar zu machen"). -------------------------- The artist of this work is Amadeus Dier (Austria 1893 - 1963), here under the pseudonym P.L. This set of erotic etchings applies to the most famous sexual-enlightment book for adults in Germany during the 20s and 30s: Th. van de Velde's "Die vollkommene Ehe" (transl.: The perfect marriage). And the title of the portfolio is: A painter has read 'The perfect marriage'. For the author van de Velde it was important for a good marriage to have a good and active sex life. And obviously this book was an inspiration for the artist of the etchings while collecting different sex positions in different situations. Each etching has a title in latin like "Defloralis orientalis" or "Habitus sedens posterior".

ALBUM OF VERNACULAR PHOTOGRAPHS, TAKEN DURING A TRIP TO INDIA, CIRCA 1930-1935, FEATURING A NOTABLE HORSEMANSHIP EVENT AS WELL AS ANCIENT RUINS IN JAMMU AND KASHMIR

1930. Original photograph album. Original Boards. Very Good. This album contains 134 photographs, mounted with corners to black cardstock leaves. The photographs vary in size from 4.75" x 3.5" to 2.5" x 2". In an album of tan cloth boards; edges of boards rubbed. 10" x 13" Following a few views from a visit to New Zealand, the port and mountains of Aden are shown from the approach at sea. Then come three photogaphs of the ancient Aden tanks, also known as the Taliwa Tanks or the Cisterns of Taliwa, considered one of the greatest, historical engineering feats of South Arabia. This album, however, is centered on India, mainly Kashmir, and begins with about 20 photographs of a grand horsemanship competition involving cavalry regiments. Indian Army soldiers are also seen firing rifles in a large park. A highlight of the album are the photographs of Naranag Temple and ruins, an impressive relic of early architecture, situated near Wangat in the Sind Valley, at the base of Harmukh Mountain. Also seen are views of the Hari Parbat Fort in Srinagar, along with birdseye views of the expansive city of Srinagar, local men at work, felled trees being floated down-river, &c.

        A Draft of XXX Cantos

Paris: Hours Press,, 1930. Octavo. Original buff linen, titles to front board and spine in red, edges untrimmed. With a plain glassine wrapper (spine defective). Initials and vignette by Dorothy Shakespear. Faint spotting to untrimmed edges, else a fine copy. First edition, number 138 of 200 copies on Canson-Mongolfier Soleil velin MRV paper, from an edition of 212. Inscribed by the author and signed with his initials on the front free endpaper to "Marcella, EZ". Marcella Spann Booth (b. 1932) was introduced to Pound's poetry at graduate school in her native Texas. While living in New York, she wrote to Pound at St Elizabeth's Hospital and requested to meet him while on a stopover in Washington DC, which began a lengthy correspondence and friendship. They collaborated on a poetry anthology (inevitably "Spannthology"), later published as Confucius to Cummings: An Anthology of Poetry (New Directions, 1964). During her frequent visits to St Elizabeth's Hospital between 1957 and 1958, Spann often shared her students' work with Pound who provided comments and advice for her teaching. After Pound's release from St Elizabeth's Hospital in 1958, Spann accompanied him and his wife, Dorothy, to Italy where she acted as Pound's secretary and continued work on the "Spannthology". Pound and Spann continued to correspond briefly after she returned to Texas in October 1959. Her extensive collection of manuscripts and correspondence with Pound is now in the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, Texas.

[Op. 32]. Von heute auf morgen Oper in einem Akt von Max Blonda Musik von Arnold Schönberg Klavierauszug

Im Selbstverlag des Komponisten Auslieferung und Bühnenvertrieb Edition Benno Balan, Berlin=Charlottenburg 4: [without PN]. [1930]. Folio. Original publisher's wrappers printed in blue. [i] (title), [ii] (list of characters, list of orchestral instruments, instructions for performance), [3]-140 pp. Facsimile of copyist's manuscript. Titling of upper wrapper identical with title except lacking imprint. Wrappers soiled; corners slightly chipped. . Second edition. Rufer (Engl.) pp. 58-60. Ringer p. 317. Tetsuo Satoh pp. 23-24. The manuscript on which the edition is based is lost. The first edition, from 1929, lacks the reference to Edition Benno Balan in the imprint and carries a typeset copyright notice dated 1929. It is also a facsimile, but is based on a different, partially autograph, manuscript. Max Blonda is a pseudonym of Schoenberg's (second) wife, Gertrud, née Kolisch (1898-1967). Von heute auf morgen is Schoenberg's first opera and also the first dodecaphonic opera by any composer. "For Schönberg it was the twelve-tone system that held the key to the future, and in 'Von heute auf morgen' he was seeking to prove that that key was not incompatible with popular success. The 1930 performances at the Frankfurt Opera and over the radio disappointed the composer. His hopes for popular success were not realized. Within two months of the premiere Schönberg was to pen the rather defensive essay 'My Public,' an essay in which he argues that 'expert judges'—principally conductors, performers, and others with influence in the musical world—are to blame for the lack of understanding of his music." März 1876 in Reutlingen; gest. 8.

Every Mother's Son [original title: Redheap]

New York: Cosmopolitan Book Corporation. Fine in Near Fine dj. 1930. 4th printing. Hardcover. NOISBN . [lovely clean copy with no significant wear, remnant of vintage price sticker on rear pastedown; jacket bright and clean, with just a touch of smudging to the spine, a few tiny nicks at top and bottom edges of rear panel]. Lindsay's second novel (although seventeen years had gone by since his first, hence the lauding of him as a "new writer" in the jacket blurbs), a family saga set in a country town in Victoria, Australia, in the 1890s (supposedly based on his own hometown). Its protagonist is a 19-year-old lad whose dalliances with various local girls (including the parson's daughter) lead his family to place him under the tutelage of a school teacher who's also a recovering alcoholic -- and who also falls prey to the boy's corrupting influence. (And the rest of the family aren't exactly angels, either, as it turns out.) Although he was already widely known as an artist and illustrator, this fictional foray kicked off a new phase of Lindsay's career, that of literary bad boy; published in London by Faber & Faber, the book was banned in the author's native Australia until 1959. (It would not be the only one of Lindsay's novels to meet a similar fate.) The original U.K. edition is pretty scarce, the American edition ever-so-much-more-so -- and jacketed copies, in this kind of condition? Fuhgeddaboudit. .

FISH MARKET and EAST STREET, FOLKESTONE HARBOUR

no date, but circa 1930 - Pair of watercolours, each 12 x 7 inches, framed and glazed in conservation materials, overall size 16.5 x 11.5 inches. A pair of unsigned, charming depictions of the houses in Fish Market and East Street, looking east, down narrow cobbled streets that have since been redeveloped. The streets are festooned with the everyday accoutrements of the fishing trade: nets, pots etc., and the buildings include herring hangs and sail lofts as well as dwellings. These paintings probably date from around the 1920s, and the buildings were demolished in 1935 following a landslip, and most were designated as slums.

4 albums of 87 watercolors and drawings of Life and Sport in Ceylon

no place, but Sri Lanka, 1930. 87 mounted sheets of original watercolors (57) and pen, ink or pencil drawings (30), most signed, together with a 1 page typed letter signed from the Manager of the Queens Hotel in Kandy, addressed to Webster, reproving him for his behavior "in the Hotel Dining Room last Sunday night," Webster has added a number of pen and ink thumbnail sketches illustrating what he had got up to. 4 vols. Oblong 4to. Bound in various commercial albums: 2 in "The Beacon Album" & 2 in "The Cambrian Album." With a small obituary notice on front pastedown of one volume. 4 vols. Oblong 4to. One album opens with a typed letter from the manager of The Kandy Queens Hotel, Oct. 1927, assessing Mr. C.M. Webster of Ellamulla, Kandapola for 5/ for breakage. A tea planter by trade, Webster has masterfully annotated the letter and the verso with pen and ink drawings of the goings on. Although Webster was clearly an amateur, the best images in this collection are funny and very well designed and executed. He was able to adopt a number of different styles, from pure Art Deco to images echoing the dynamic rhythm of the woodcuts of Claude Flight. The subjects depicted include baseball(!), fencing, hunting, shooting and riding. Various places are referred to: Galella, Ellamulle, Kandapola (all tea plantations), and the Hunter's Arms. A friend, Lionel S. Boys, who appears to have visited Webster, comes in for some "ribbing." It is noted online that C.M. Webster worked as the Assistant Manager on the Ellamulle (or Yellamalle in Tamil) Plantation from 1927 to 1930. As a whole, the drawings offer some indirect insight into the off-duty antics of British colonials in Sri Lanka. Webster died "at his home Wrantage, Somerest, former tea planter and writer. Dear father of Diana and Glenys and grandfather of Lyndsley and dear brother of Anthony"

£1000 All British House - stylish architectural "competition" piece, together with a group of examination and project drawings and printed plans by the same architect

Bournemouth: , 1930-1936. Superbly-executed, large watercolour (754 × 540 mm; 29.69 × 21.26 in) on art board with a large rendering drawing of deco-style house and garden together with a lay-out plan; four elevations, two sections, and floor plans of the ground and first floors and the roof. Accompanied by 13 other architectural drawings in the same hand, full listing below. Named drawing with some fairly substantial pin [nail] holes to the margin, not encroaching on the image, slightly bowed, the other pieces with similar pin-holes and some surface soiling, but overall very good. Collection of drawings, 1930s, architectural studies, plans, one an approved design, the majority signed by Samuel Douglas Hardy, who seems to have been associated at the time with the Bournemouth architectural practice of H.R. Collins and A.E.O. Geens - responsible for the award winning Havering Town Hall, 1935 - possibly related to Phillip Hardy of Seal and Hardy, architects of the deco Bournemouth Echo Building. The main piece here would seem to be some sort of competition piece, very handsome indeed, and showing just what was possible for £1000 in the 1930s. It is accompanied by a group of drawings produced over a five year period while Hardy was evidently studying for his RIBA certification, but including at least one genuine project. 1/ An Old English Style Cottage. Three elevations, section, block and three floor plans. 12/ Proposed House & Garage. Plot 75 Queens Park Avenue, Bournemouth for S.D. Hardy Esq. Dated Dec/1936. Outline draft print with watercolour, extensive red ink and pencil annotations to the plans (501 × 679 mm; 19.75 × 26.75 inches) on linen-backed, lightly waxed paper. 13/ Duplicate of the above with variant annotation, and signed, inked approval "for and on behalf of the Malmesbury Estates Company" dated 24 December 1936.
