        The Discoverie of Witchcraft

1930. WITCHCRAFT. The Discoverie of Witchcraft. With an introduction and bibliographical note by Montague Summers. By Reginald Scot. xxxviii, 283 pp. 4to., bound in publisher's tan calf-backed green cloth. London: John Rodker, 1930. |~||~||~||~||~| This is a reprint of the 1584 edition. A handsome edition of this 16th-century classic which attempted to disprove the existence of witches. Rich full account of charges against witches, witch trials, practice of the black arts. Excerpts from Inquisition, interviews with convicted witches, discussions of alchemy, astrology, much more. An indispensable primary source on witchcraft. When published in 1584 it was the first significant English response to the witch craze. Scot drew from the ideas of Weier and others to argue forcefully against the theories of witch hunters like Sprenger and Kramer and Jean Bodin, thereby attracting the wrath of King James I of England, who ordered all copies of his book burned, making the original edition a legendary rarity. One of an edition of 1275 copies.

        Autograph letter signed.

Boulogne-Billancourt, [after 1930]. - 4to. 1¾ pp. To an "Editorial Board": "What you asked me in your last letter represents the hardest task for me. I am a badly organized and lazy person in regards to anything that is not related to my direct work, which is sculpture. There is enough literature, a few monographs, and lots of magazines and newspaper articles, but to put it all together is beyond my ability. I will send you the one that I received recently as an example. Incidentally this is one is flattering, but there are a few that are not so rewarding. Anyway - all that is not really important. I believe that the day will come when the contour of my art will become clear. Meanwhile, for those who want to know from where I came and how old I am - here is my short autobiography. I was born on 30th of August (new style) in v[illage] Druskeniki; Grodno county, in a pious Jewish family. I studied at vocational school in Vilna and in 1909 went to Paris to study scultpure (I did some as a self-taught since my early childhood). So I have lived here since that time, I even became a naturalized French citizen. I studied at the Academy and since 1912 have had several exhibitions in different salons, but not many. I did have a personal exhibition at the Rosenberg gallery in 1920 and a second one, very extensive in 1930. My works are in different personal collections and museums. There is not much exciting in happening in my life. That's all. With all my respect [.]". - Though Pablo Picasso is credited with creating Cubism, Lipchitz advanced and further interpreted the style by applying the principles of Cubist painting to sculpture. When he moved to Paris in 1909, he became acquainted with Picasso, as well as fellow sculptors Juan Gris and Alexander Archipenko. During this time he created Cubist sculptures including his "Sailor with Guitar". In 1924, Swiss avant-garde architect Le Corbusier built a studio for Lipchitz on the outskirts of Paris, whence our letter was written. By the time the Nazi's occupied France, forcing Lipchitz to move to the U. S., he was known around the world. - Folded with a small vertical fold tear at the upper edge and four file holes in the margin not affecting the text. With a moderate amount of foxing and some uneven age toning on the recto. A fragment of paper headed "Le Musée" is affixed to the upper left corner.

London, 1930. No. 134 OF 195 COPIES on paper (and 10 on vellum) n. Hardcover. 364 x 256 mm (14 1/4 x 10 1/8"). Two volumes. No. 134 OF 195 COPIES on paper (and 10 on vellum). FINE RECENT DARK GREEN HALF MOROCCO, GILT, BY COURTLAND BENSON, lighter green marbled paper sides, raised bands, spines handsomely gilt in compartments in antique style with large elegant floral stamp centerpiece and curling leafy cornerpieces, gilt titling, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With a total of 27 engravings (26 images), as called for: a title page vignette featuring a bust of Swift (appearing in each volume), eight head- and tailpieces, five full-page maps, and 12 DELICATELY HAND-COLORED COPPER-ENGRAVED PLATES (including two frontispieces) BY REX WHISTLER, each within an ornate baroque-style frame. Front pastedown of volume II with the bookplate of Charles J. Rosenbloom. Ransom, p. 7. A VERY FINE SET inside and out. This is a beautifully rebound copy of one of the major Cresset books. Inspired by such masters as Watteau, Canoletto, and Boucher, Whistler's work, including the witty drawings here surrounded by rococo frames, recall the 18th century heyday of French book illustration. Horne quotes a 1984 exhibit at the British Museum that says, "This playful essay in 18th century pastiche is, like much fine English book-making of the 1920s and 1930s, aesthetically backward-looking. Whistler's drawings are matched by a text printed in a revival of John Baskerville's 18th century types." Reginald John "Rex" Whistler (1905-44) made a name for himself in mural painting, stage design, and book illustration, and in "Gulliver," his skills as a theater designer and as a muralist align to produce what is widely regarded as his masterpiece, as well as a highspot of 20th century fine printing. Horne describes him as "one of the most gifted figures of the years between the wars," and laments that his artistic career was brought to a tragically premature end by World War II, during which Whistler died while serving as a tank troop leader in France. Our copy's prior owner, Pittsburgh attorney and businessman Charles J. Rosenbloom (1898-1973), was a philanthropist, bibliophile, and art collector with broad interests and refined taste.

        Moby Dick

Random House, New York 1930 - A superb copy of the 1930 1st Rockwell Kent-illustrated trade edition (following the landmark 3 Vol. Lakeside Press edition). Remarkably clean and bright in its silver-decorated and lettered dark cloth. No wear or rubbing of any kind to the design, nor is there any foxing or other markings to the interior. Incredibly, the book is easily Near Fine and even borders on Fine. And the iconic, Kent-illustrated dustjacket is also bright and clean and presents remarkably well. There's no chipping or paper loss to speak of and the one flaw -the very light creasing at the panel edges and spine ends-- is subtle and inoffensive. A crisp, clean, Near Fine dustjacket. Thick 12mo, the sharpest copy this bookseller has seen. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

In Memoriam by Alfred Lord Tennyson

London: Nonesuch Press, 1930.. Tall 8vo., bound in the 1980s in suede and calf painted with green paint and with inlaid sculpted leather pieces, on the back is a pendulum made from silver cord and black painted leather and there is a gilt dot on each cover, the fore edges are painted grey and black, the inside covers are in full black morocco with a large cross tooled on each of them, signed with Sellars's monogram on the lover turnin. In an extraordinary sculptural box of two glass sides framed in black which slot into a black stand, the material is leather pieces glued together, formed and then varnished. The box has caused a very slight rubbing to the spine but this is generally in extremely good condition. A remarkable achievement, executed by Sellars in the early 1980s. The binding suits the book well with more than a whiff of High Victorian mourning.

Collection Decors et Couleurs. Album No. 1

1930. VALMIER, Georges. Collection Decors et Couleurs. Album No. 1. Illustrated with 20 pochoir plates. Folio, 440 x 344 mm, issued loose in original tan portfolio, pochoir title on front board, with ties. Original tissue guards present. Paris: Aux Editions Albert Levy, 1930. One of 100 copies. A perfect copy of this Art Deco port-folio of brightly coloured pochoir plates designed by the French painter Georges Valmier. The coloured plates present multiple patterns for a particular colour scheme. These patterns served as Art Deco designs for wallpaper and textiles. Georges Valmier (1885-1937) was an accomplished artist influenced by several of the major artistic movements at the turn of the century, especially Cubism. This becomes clear in the present portfolio which includes, amongst others, a Cubist rendering of a guitar. The colours in this publication are especially vibrant; Valmier's designs were printed by Jean Saudé, a master of the pochoir process. Saudé was the greatest exponent of the art of pochoir or stencil printing, and his name is associated with nearly all of the important Art Deco books issued in France. Complete copies of this portfolio are rare as most have been segmented by the print trade.

        Das Geld Schreibt

1930. HEARTFIELD, John. Das Geld Schreibt. By Upton Sinclair. 215, [1] pp. 8vo., bound in original boards and dust-jacket designed by John Heartfield, in a new black cloth folding box, title and author printed in black on yellow leather spine label. Berlin: Malik-Verlag, 1930. Two copies of the German edition of Sinclair's 1927 novel Money Writes, the first with the original uncensored cover by Heartfield, and the second with the censored cover. Both are very rare. The first version was illustrated with a photograph of Emil Ludwig with his family. The censored version, with the faces of the family excised, appeared as a result of Ludwig's victory in his lawsuit against Malik. The rear wrapper of the censored copy is missing a corner, and has some wear, but overall acceptable copies. Pachnicke, Peter and Klaus Honnef, John Heartfield, no. 335. Valencia, John Heartfield en la Coleccion del IVAM, p.78. Siepmann, Montage: John Heartfield vom Club Dada zur Arbeiter-Illustrierter Zeitung, A132.
