This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Very Good dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The text pages are mostly clean and bright, but there is some light generalized toning to the endpapers and edges of the text block. The dust jacket has edge wear and nicking along with rubbing and tears to the spine ends and flaps. There is one chip missing from the middle spine of the dust jacket. Trade copies of this book with the dust jacket are actually quite scarce in comparison to the limnited edition. This copy has been signed, with an inscription on the front endpaper. "A transcendentalist and mystic in the tradition of Thoreau and Emerson, whose works he read, Kent found inspiration in the austerity and stark beauty of wilderness. After Monhegan, he lived for extended periods of time in Winona, Minnesota (1912?-1913), Newfoundland (1914?-15), Alaska (1918?-19), Vermont (1919?-1925), Tierra del Fuego (1922?-23), Ireland (1926), and Greenland (1929; 1931?-32; 1934?-35). Projet de décoration et aménagement d'un hall d'aérogare indéterminé mais très représentatif du goût de l'époque (notons à titre d'exemple que l'aérogare du Bourget près de Paris fut inauguré en 1937 en présence du Président de la République et du Ministre de l'Air). Les grands noms de l'aviation sont inscrits en colonne sur les murs (Costes, Mermoz, Codos, Le Brix, Guillebaud, Hélène Bolt, Nungesser, Assolant, Delmotte), des moteurs à hélices ornent les portes d'entrée, sur fond de grandes façades vitrées. Très beau document visuel sur l'architecture aéronautique de l'entre-deux guerres.

A rare,crisp example of the corrected 1930 version of Tolkien and Gordon's edition of the great Middle English Poem, Sir Gawain. The book is squarely bound in the original publisher's cloth with gilt decoration; internally a little browning to pages. The ownership signature of 'D Rose 1936' appears on the first blank with further ink annotation to the text in the same hand. A very nice copy. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (Middle English: Sir Gawayn and þe Grene Kny?t) is a late 14th-century Middle English chivalric romance. It is one of the best known Arthurian stories, with its plot combining two types of folklore motifs, the beheading game and the exchange of winnings. The Green Knight is interpreted by some as a representation of the Green Man of folklore and by others as an allusion to Christ. Written in stanzas of alliterative verse, each of which ends in a rhyming bob and wheel, it draws on Welsh, Irish and English stories, as well as the French chivalric tradition. It is an important poem in the romance genre, which typically involves a hero who goes on a quest which tests his prowess, and it remains popular to this day in modern English renderings from J. R. R. Tolkien, Simon Armitage and others, as well as through film and stage adaptations. It describes how Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur's Round Table, accepts a challenge from a mysterious "Green Knight" who challenges any knight to strike him with his axe if he will take a return blow in a year and a day. Gawain accepts and beheads him with his blow, at which the Green Knight stands up, picks up his head and reminds Gawain of the appointed time. In his struggles to keep his bargain Gawain demonstrates chivalry and loyalty until his honour is called into question by a test involving Lady Bertilak, the lady of the Green Knight's castle. The poem survives in a single manuscript, the Cotton Nero A.x., which also includes three religious narrative poems: Pearl, Purity and Patience. This is likely a prepublication/review copy, due to the color of the boards (we have handled quite a few copies of this work over the years, and we have never handled a copy in tan boards) and laid in is a typed slip, that reads: "THIS BOOK IS PUBLISHED MARCH 7". Nückel's only wordless novel is made up of striking leadcut images, but in the tradition of the work of (early) Lynd Ward and Frans Masereel. "This pitiless story of a girl of the lower classes is curt, bare and powerful. The baseness of the underworld milieu is drawn with unsparing line; but the tale is lifted out of the merely lurid by the honesty of the artist's feelings, by his mastery of his medium. The slipcase is worn at top and bottom with the flaps coming loose, slight fading to spine but generally a very fresh, bright copy. The great mathematician and physicists Pascal's last thoughts which form his defence of the Christian religion - a book which he intended to publish but which were were in fact published posthumously.         WORLD MAP WITH ANIMAL HABITATS: WELTKARTE DER GEOGRAPHISCHEN VERBREITUNG DER PELZTIERE.

      - This extraordinary German language map depicts the entire World on a Mercator Projection, with the territories of various nations expressed in different colours. Most interestingly, the images and of dozens of different types of fur-bearing animals appear in their respective habitats, presented in an elegant and understated style. The map was published shortly before World War I by the famous furrier Emil Brass, as both an educational tool and a commercial promotional piece. At some point during the 1930s, the map was adopted as an advertising piece by the Leipzig furrier of Kittel & Franke (founded 1930), who placed their pastedown over Brass’s original imprint (in the lower left corner). The pastedown: "Kittel & Franke, Spezialität: Fohlen - Kalbfelle - Kanin. Import / Export. Leipzig C1, Brühl 68". While undated, the map can be dated from between 1912 and 1914. The international and colonial borders reflect the state of play between 1912 (when as shown, Italy acquired control over Libya) and the end of World War I. The German Empire is shown to possess large colonies in Africa and the South Pacific, while Britain’s Empire, upon which the "Sun never Set," is shown in its prime. That being said, this is clearly a peacetime map, so it dates from before the end of the summer of 1914. The present map was devised and published by Emil Brass (1856 - 1938), the foremost commercial furrier of his era and an international academic authority on fur-bearing animals and related aspects of geography. He travelled widely around the world and lived in China for some time. He was an eccentric figure who sported a long beard, dirty clothing and was something of a celebrity in his hometown of Berlin. In 1904, he founded a magazine on the fur Industry and related scientific matters, Neue Pelzwaren- und Kürschnerzeitung. He wrote a famous book on fur-bearing animals, Aus dem Reiche der Pelze (1911), which proved highly popular and was reissued in an expanded edition in 1924. Brass was fascinated by geographical questions, especially as they related to animals, and he spent many days in Paris Bibliothèque nationalecopying maps. He was a member of Britain’s Royal Geographical Society and served as president of the Gesellschaft für Erdkunde zu Berlin (the Geographical Society of Berlin) from 1919 to 1931. He was likewise a close friend of the African explorer Otto Kersten. The present map represents Brass’s largest and most visually striking geographical production. In his latter years, Brass became a recluse. When he died in March 1938, only three people knew about it, and the exact date of his death remains a mystery. Brass’s fur map is a curious and attractive piece and like most ephemera / advertising maps, it is very rare. Published in the same year by the Lakeside Press of Chicago in a large format, three-volume, limited edition, this trade edition proved immensely popular. It has been credited with contributing greatly to the rediscovery of Moby Dick as a classic. A fine copy.

      30er Jahre. - Verso mit Nachlassstempel des Künstlers "Nachlass Erich Hartmann beglaubigt vom Testamentsvollstrecker". Auf Velin. Der bildparallel angelegte Liegestuhl mit der Lesenden nimmt die gesamte Breite des Blattes ein. Rechts im Hintergrund ist ein Fenster durch einer mit wenigen Strichen skizzierte Gardine angedeutet. Der hell lavierte Hintergrund links hebt den Kopf der Lesenden hervor. Vermutlich handelt es sich bei der Lesenden Frau um Hartmanns Ehefrau Ida Jenichen. Erich Hartmann leistet einen entscheidenden Beitrag zur Ausbildung und Entwicklung des expressiv realistischen Hamburger Sezessionsstils um 1930. Nach seinem Studium an der Düsseldorfer und Münchener Akademie kommt er 1918 in seine Wahlheimat Hamburg. Ein Jahr später tritt er der Hamburgischen Sezession bei. 1922-44 unterrichtet Hartmann an der privaten Kunstschule Gerda Koppel, an der bedeutende Avantgarde-Maler wie Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann und Eduard Bargheer zu seinen Kollegen zählen. Durch die Vermittlung von Fritz Schumacher erhält Hartmann mehrere öffentliche Aufträge. 1937 - im Entstehungsjahr des Aqarells - an der Hamburger Kunsthalle und in Stettin Arbeiten von Hartmann durch die Nationalsozialisten entfernt. Nach dem Krieg ist Hartmann von 1946-53 Leiter der Malklasse an der Landeskunstschule Hamburg. Ende der 1940er Jahre löst sich Hartmann von seinen Vorbildern und beschreitet einen eigenen Weg, bei dem er die Form der Farbe unterordnet. Seine späten Arbeiten bewegen sich zwischen Abstraktion und Gegenständlichkeit. - Minimal gebräunt, wenige unbedeutende Fleckchen. Am Unterrand wohl etwas beschnitten, aber ohne Darstellungsverlust. Nach Kriegsende Eintritt in die KPD. 1946 Berufung als Professor und Leiter der Abteilung Graphik an die Staatliche Akademie für Graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe in Leipzig. 1951 infolge einer Kampagne von seinem Dienst entbunden.         Merl Lavoy Photographs from the 1930 Prayer Rock Archaeological Expedition

      - A collection of over 120 photographs, probably all taken by Merle LaVoy in 1930. The prints are in fine condition. The quality of images varies, with some low contrast or washed out, but most at good to excellent contrast. Most are 5" x 7" stereographs, with full 5" x 7" prints of some. There are also eight Keystone View Company published stereographs, 4" x 6 1/2", some of the same scenes in the larger prints. Most of the photos are from the 1930 expedition arranged by Charles Bernheimer to explore the Basketmaker sites in Northeast Arizona's Prayer Rock district. Others, however, are scenes from Zion National Park's tunnel (probably at its official opening in 1930) , reenactment scenes with many covered pioneer wagons, men with telescopes, and a Keystone view of a diver mid-air at the El Mirador Hotel in Palm Springs. The Prayer Rock expedition was an archaeological foray into some lesser known canyons around the Lukachukai Mountains. Earl Morris, John Wetherill, Charles Bernheimer, Zeke Johnson and others collected, took photographs, and documented their findings at the area, with renowned photographer Merl Lavoy taking the photos. The photos show expedition members in ruins, the pack train, a few artifacts including a huge basket, and many ruin structures. Another portion of the photos focuses on the Native Americans in the area, with many close-ups of Puebloan potters, Navajo weavers, children, and sheepherders. The majority of photos do not seem to have any published references, with the exception of the Keystone views. Bernheimer did not publish a report of this expedition as he did for his previous findings at other ruin sites. Merl Lavoy was a prolific photographer and film maker for the British Pathe news service. An adventurer and world traveler, he is particularly known for his photos and footage of World War I and indigenous peoples. ; B&W Photographs; 5" x 7"

Title page is followed by a four-page essay by Gallatin, followed by an essay on The Gallery of Living Art by Mauny (9 pages). This is followed by 44 full-sheet bw plates. After the plates there is a listing of all the works in the collection, organized alphabetically by artist (60 artists are listed, with detailed listings of their painting(s) in the collection. Very rare. The whole has a distinctive flair to it. Quite restorable.

      [Frankfurt - Basel], o. J. [um 1930] Original. [ca. 7,4 x 7,2 cm]. - Tadellos. - Dexel (1890 - 1973) schuf in den zwanziger Jahren in Jena als einer der ersten Gaslaternen zu Werbezwecken. Formal entwickelte Dexel diese \"dreidimensionale(n), beleuchtete(n) Plakate\" aus seiner Malerei und Gebrauchsgrafik. 1926 ging Walter Dexel als freiberuflicher Berater für Reklamegestaltung nach Frankfurt am Main. Hauptziel einer von ihm für Frankfurt entworfenen Reklameordnung war die Vereinheitlichung der Fassaden, ein Gleichklang zwischen Reklame und Architektur. In Frankfurt entwarf Dexel 1927/28 außer zahlreichen Transparenten und Reklameuhren auch größere Lichtreklamegestaltungen an Häuserfronten und auf Hausdächern. Hinzu kamen beleuchtete Telefonzellen und Leuchtsäulen für Normaluhren. Dabei gelang es Dexel, seine \"bildimmanente Syntax\" aus den Bereichen der Sammler- und Museumskunst in die Funktionsbereiche des urbanen Alltags zu übertragen. Dexels Verständnis von (guter) Werbung war dabei ein durchaus eingeschränktes, für ihn fielen \"Typografie\" und \"Reklame\" so gut wie zusammen. Insofern war Reklame für ihn \"Gebrauchskunst\" ohne alles genialische Künstlertum. (Zitat) - Bienz (1895-1960) produzierte den Film \"Der Bergführer\" (1917) mit Konrad Lips, als Kameramann.       October . 1930. - Archive of 11 large rough proof photographs of the R101 airship disaster, the photographs measure 12'' x 10'' [6] and 10'' x 8'' [5]. A total of 46 of the 54 passengers and crew were killed immediately. Rigger's S. Church and W. G. Radcliffe survived the crash but later died in hospital in Beauvais, bringing the total of dead to 48. The bodies were returned to England and on Friday 10 October a memorial service took place at St Paul's Cathedral while the bodies lay in state in Westminster Hall at the Palace of Westminster. Nearly 90,000 people queued to pay their respects: at one time the queue was half a mile long, and the hall was kept open until 12:35 am to admit them all. The following day a funeral procession transferred the bodies to Euston station through streets crowded with mourners: the bodies were then taken to Cardington village for burial in a common grave in the cemetery of St Mary's church. A monument was later erected, and the scorched Royal Air Force Ensign which R101 had flown on its tail is on display, along with a memorial tablet, in the church's nave. On 27 November 2014, 84 years after the disaster, Baroness Smith of Basildon, together with members of the Airship Heritage Trust, unveiled a memorial plaque to the R101 in St Stephens Hall in the Palace of Westminster.         Moby Dick or The Whale.

      Chicago: The Lakeside Press,, 1930. Illustrated by Rockwell Kent. 3 volumes, quarto. Original black cloth over bevelled boards, decoration to the upper boards and titles to spines in silver, top edges stained black, others uncut. With the aluminium slipcase. Illustrated throughout by Rockwell Kent. Spines lightly sunned, covers slightly rubbed, a few scuffs and scratches to the slipcase, some light offsetting from plates to letterpress, paper flaw in margin of penultimate leaf in volume I otherwise a very good set. First Rockwell Kent edition, limited to 1,000 sets. Presentation copy from the illustrator, inscribed on the front free endpaper of volume I: "Inscribed to Miss Effie Branch by Rockwell Kent. 1930"; the recipient was a member of the Branch family of Richmond, Virginia, whose most distinguished member was the writer James Branch Cabell. One of the finest editions of Melville's masterpiece and one of the great American illustrated books of the 20th century. In 1926 Rockwell Kent (1882?-1971), then just beginning to establish his fame as an artist, was approached by R. R. Donnelley and Sons to illustrate a new edition of Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast. Kent demurred, suggesting Moby Dick instead. Kent was given complete freedom to design and illustrate the three-volume set. The resulting work has been hailed as a masterpiece of 20th-century book illustration and credited with reviving public interest in a sublime but difficult novel.
