      - Nie zuvor wurden die originalen Weltmeisterschaftsbälle komplett fotografiert, nie zuvor mit fotoästhetischer Perfektion und Liebe porträtiert. Die Künstler und Autoren haben dazu fast ein dutzend Länder bereist, über drei Jahre hinweg recherchiert, ein Jahr geplant, entworfen und produziert und dieses wunderbare, limitierte Werk herausgebracht. Die Kunst-Edition besteht aus 7 hochwertigen Pigmentabzügen der Weltmeisterschaftsbälle von 1930, 1954, 1966, 1974, 1986, 1998 und 2006 im Format 33 cm mal 33 cm, auf Hahnemühle Fine Art Papier 285 gr, in Museumsqualität angefertigt. Das heißt, sie sind besonders lange haltbar und die Oberfläche edel. Die Pigmentabzüge sind alle vom Fotografen Jens Heilmann handsigniert. Das Buch wurde auf einem besonders veredelten Naturpapier im hochwertigen Offsetdruck gedruckt, dann mit großem Aufwand zu einer sogenannten Schweizer Broschur verarbeitet (fadengenäht und verleimt, mit offenem Rücken), weil sich diese Form des Buches leicht blättern lässt. Die Naht darf gern an Ballnähte erinnern. Der Buchdeckel nimmt das Material der Schachtel noch einmal auf. Die Fotografie der Bälle ist aufwändig, wirkt aber schlicht und unspektakulär. Die individuelle Geschichte der Bälle, ihr oftmaliger Wechsel von einem Besitzer zum anderen, ihre technischen Besonderheiten wurden mit größtmöglicher Detailtreue recherchiert und aufgeschrieben. Materialwahl und Verarbeitung, Form, Grafik. Texte und Fotografie sollten eine Einheit bilden und zur Ausstrahlung der Bälle passen. Diese haben mit der Zeit eine schöne und schlichte Patina erhalten. Ähnlich verhält es sich mit diesem Buch. Der Einband ist empfindlich und es wird ein vorsichtiger Umgang empfohlen, insbesondere, wenn das Buch weiterverschenkt werden soll. Zu diesem Zweck sind Baumwollhandschuhe beigelegt. Die Bücher haben einen Umfang von 60 Seiten und 33x33 cm und sind handnummeriert. Die Schachtel ist eine hochwertige Buchbindearbeit aus Karton und Holz.       Philadelphia: David McKay Company,, [1930]. Small octavo. Original yellow cloth-backed black boards, spine lettered black, front board lettered gilt and decorated with a martini glass in gilt, yellow endpapers, top edge yellow. With the dust jacket. Spine gently rolled, faint finger-marking to front free endpaper. An excellent copy in a lightly edge-chipped, scuffed and spotted jacket. First edition, first printing of this book, uncommon in the jacket, of cocktail recipes from the exclusive London club, Ciro's. It opened on Orange Street as a private club in 1915, and was renowned as one of the first London venues to host an all-black band. This very attractive little book features an early appearance of the Pegu Club cocktail, as well as the contested White Lady - the creation of which is claimed by two Harrys: Harry Craddock of The Savoy, and Harry MacElhone (later of Harry's New York Bar fame) during his stint at Ciro's in London in 1919. The precise identity of the bartender "Jimmy" remains unknown, though it is very possible that he is Jimmy Charters, bartender of the Dingo Bar in Paris and Ciro's in Monte Carlo. All the recipes are easily replicated without special equipment, so that (somewhat questionably) "even a child of five may prepare his (or her) favourite beverage without the necessity of running to ask daddy: 'Please, what is a jigger?'

A handsome map showing the route of Transcontinental Air Transport, TAT, founded in 1928 and merged with Western Air Express in 1930, becoming TWA. The decorative border features vignette illustrations of cities and landmarks found along the TAT route. Verso includes "Certificate of Flight" (not filled in). .

Januar 1873 in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco; gest. 1. März 1952 in Mexiko-Stadt) war ein mexikanischer Arzt und Schriftsteller. Azuela studierte Medizin an der Universidad de Guadalajara; nach erfolgreichem Abschluss wurde er 1899 als Arzt zugelassen. Politisch interessiert nahm er an der Revolution teil und kämpfte unter Führung von Francisco Madero gegen Porfirio Díaz. Für einige Zeit leitete Azuela dabei auch die Verwaltung seiner Heimat Lagos de Moreno. Nach der Ermordung Maderos legte Azuela 1913 alle seine Ämter nieder und schloss sich Pancho Villa an. 1915 flüchtete er nach El Paso (Texas) und arbeitete dort u.a. als Journalist. Zwei Jahre später kehrte er mit seiner Familie in die Hauptstadt seines Landes zurück und arbeitete dort dann zeit seines Lebens als Arzt. Azuelas großes umfassendes Thema ist die mexikanische Revolution. Sein bei weitem berühmtester Roman "Los de abajo" (dt. Die Rotte) entstand 1915 als Fortsetzungsroman für das Feuilleton der in El Paso erscheinenden, spanischsprachigen Zeitung El Paso del Norte. Im Folgejahr wurde er auch in Buchform publiziert. Bereits kurz nach Erscheinen wurde er vielfach übersetzt und eine bemerkenswerte Verfilmung von Regisseur Chano Urueta war unter demselben Titel ab 1. Juni 1940 in den Kinos zu sehen. Bei Los de abajo verzichtet Azuela auf historische Genauigkeit. Vielmehr besticht sein Werk durch schnellen Szenenwechsel und lebendige Bilder, mit denen er ein beeindruckendes Bild der revoltierenden Horden zeichnet. First Rockwell Kent trade edition, first printing. First published the same year by the Lakeside Press of Chicago in a three-volume limited edition, this trade edition proved immensely popular. It has been credited with contributing greatly to the rediscovery of Moby Dick as a classic.

        A CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN THE FAMOUS FALCONER "CHAS" KNIGHT AND THE AMERICAN LECTURE MANAGER JAMES "BIM" POND CONSISTING OF SEVERAL LETTERS TOGETHER WITH ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS & PUBLICITY BROCHURES ADVERTISING HIS LECTURES.

      [1920 through 1956]. Circa [1930]. [1930] - - This small archive and correspondence begins with a retained copy of a typed letter from the American lecture manager James "Bim" Pond to his British colleague Gerald Christy of the Gerald Christy Lecture Agency dated May 4th, 1920 admiring Captain Knight's circulars and requesting that Christy send him "fifty or a hundred" of his booklets as he believes he can secure bookings for Captain "Chas" Knight as soon as October. The retained copy of a second letter to Christy, this one dated August 20th, 1920, is in response to Christy's telegram requesting Pond let him know the "fixed" dates for Knight's lectures. The brief telegram is included. Pond replies that he has not yet set dates since it is hard to do so without "proper advertising equipment". He goes on "I must also confess that I have really little heart for working on these unknown English lecturers when you are so little willing to return the effort and put a little energy on a man such as Vachel Lindsay." In an Autograph Letter Signed by "Chas" Knight, dated January 25, 1926 and penned on a 6-1/2 inch high by 5 inch wide sheet of creamy white paper with an attached blank leaf, the naturalist & falconer invites Pond to come and hear him lecture in New York. Signed "Chas. R. Knight". By September 24, 1928, Pond has signed a contract with Franklin Fisher of the National Geographic Society for a lecture by Knight. The partially printed document on a 10-7/8 inch high by 8-1/4 inch wide sheet is signed by Pond and Fisher. Franklin Fisher was Director of Illustrations at the National Geographic Magazine. A retained copy of a typed letter by Pond, dated February 4, 1931, addressed to Captain Knight hints at a misunderstanding which has resulted in a rift between the two men. "I have always been terribly sorry that we misunderstood each other." Apparently Knight had gone on to engage the services of one of Pond's competitors as Pond continues "I have said nothing to you of leaving Miss Smith and returning to me as I have not wanted to do anything to hinder her. However, from what I hear your business is not coming along as it should and I am wondering if you would like to come back. If so, the door is wide open." On October 11th, 1932, Knight writes an exceedingly friendly typed letter to Pond. In this two-and-a-quarter page letter, Knight informs Pond that he'll be over again in January and "will take the liberty of coming to look you up." He writes of his passion "We've had a great Falconry Season, the best show we've had. My Falcons killed just on 60 Crows and Rooks, and my Gos 114 head of game since the middle of August." He playfully closes by saying that "Ramshaw is in the pink, like wise deep in the moult. He sends his love to his Uncle Bim, and to the charming ladies of the staff." Signed "Chas". In a 3-page Autograph Letter, dated February 22, 1933 on three sheets of 9-1/2 inch high by 6 inch wide Northern Hotel (Billings, Montana) stationery, Knight writes of his "new film" which he is to show at the Harvard Club in New York City in March and hopes that Pond can be there: "I think I can promise you some refreshment". He closes with news of his eagle Mister Ramshaw "The bloody old Eagle is still going strong. Did ya hear how he 'foiled burglars' at William Huff's house??" Signed "Chas". In a friendly, though sad typed letter signed on 9-1/2 inch high by 7-3/4 inch wide light blue air mail paper, dated January 6th, 1956, Knight informs Pond that "So far I have not had any nibbles regarding a return tour." Apparently he'd had a falling out with a promoter named "Mac" and goes on to say "The few dates Mac had obtained for this season have had to be abandoned - as you say there is no telling what he may spread about me. I think the true situation is fairly well known." He closes with "I feel much depressed, Bim. I wonder what the future has in store for me!" Signed "Chas". A rare and quite possibly unique opportunity to acquire a complete set of 4 volumes of the John O'London's Children's Library. 1st editions, hardback, each comprising 128pp with 4 colour plates and 4 b&w illustrations. The illustrations for The Knights of the Round Table are by Thomas Heath Robinson, brother to Charles and William Heath Robinson. Unfortunately, the illustrator for the other 3 titles is not credited by the publisher and his/her identity remains unknown. A very attractive set in the original red cloth with black titles, all contained in the original colour illustrated dustwrappers, in near-FINE condition all round with a very few minor nicks to the wrappers. Each book is neatly dated and inscribed to the front free endpaper: "July 1935. St Gildas High School, Langport. Sr Marie du Cénacle, Princ." [The school was attached to St Gildas' Convent, now closed, in the Somerset town of Langport].

        Exceptional Photograph Album Documenting the Activities of a Hunting & Fishing Club (probably the Chapleau Fish and Game Club)

      Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec, 1930. Photograph Album. Very Good. 1930s. The album is 11" x 15" and contains over 280 black and white photographs ranging in size from 2.5" x 3.5" to 8.5" x 14". Most are 3.5" x 5.5" and 22 are 3.5" x 14" panoramas. The photos are primarily attached using corner mounts, several are captioned. The album and photographs are in nice shape; a few of the photos have corner creases or missing tips. Two of the photos are annotated, "Chapleau Club Complements J. O. Tetrault." The Chapleau Fish and Game Club was a long-standing private club composed wealthy Quebecers/Quebecois and named in honor of former Premier Joseph-Adolphe Chapleau, who was also an honorary member. J. O. Tetrault, whose name appears in the margins of two photographs, was the founder and president of the Tetrault Shoe Manufacturing Company of Quebec. The photos include exceptional images of scenery, hunting, fishing, canoeing, camping, campfire cooking, hunting dogs, and large numbers of strung deer, fish, and other game. There are also several photos of a member imitating Adolph Hitler, a recently caught shark, ice sculptures, banjo playing, women swimming, and a fantasy image of a 'giant' fish loaded on a truck.

He studied photography at the Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt (Training and research institute) in Munich from 1909 to 1911, and began receiving international recognition soon after graduation. In 1911 he returned to Budapest and opened his own studio, where he also offered instruction to apprentices. In 1913 he established the photography department at the Budapest School of Industrial Drawing, for which he is credited as the founder of photography education in Hungary. He was dismissed from teaching in 1920 due to conflicts with the conservative political regime but maintained his own studio, which served as a gathering place for students, including Eva Besnyö and her friend György Kepes. In 1922 Pécsi was elected vice president of the Budapest Industrial Guild of Photographers and served as editor of the guild's journal, Magyar fotográfia (Hungarian photography). In 1930 he published the influential book Photo und Publizität (Photography and publicity) to promote the blending of typography, design, and photography in avant-garde advertising, with contributions from Kepes and others. The publication marks his crossover from the Pictorialist style of his early work to the ascendant international modernism of the interwar period. The World War II years took their toll: he hid in Romania for a brief period; his studio and negatives were destroyed by a bomb in 1945; and, upon his return to Budapest, in 1946, financial hardship and an unfavourable regime forced him to take passport photographs to make ends meet. His passion for photography and innovative spirit were not lost, however; in 1952 he patented a combined duplex Pigment print process under the name PEJO" (MoMA online). The illustrations in Photo und Publizität show Pécsi's modernist approach to advertising photography in everything from biscuits and soap to razor blades and book covers.

A collection of 274 sepia toned or black and white photos measuring between 2.5" x 2" and 8" x 10", most with captions. The photo album is very good or better with some worn edges, the photographs are mostly fine. A photo album kept by a young woman referred to only as "Emaline" of original candid snapshot photos of movie stars, 53 of which are Signed by the subjects. The photos show some of the most famous actors, actresses, writers, and directors of the "golden age" of cinema, some of whom are posed with Emaline, on street corners, in cars, and waiting for trains. She is seen in photos with Ronald Reagan, Bob Hope, Walter Huston, Jimmy Durante, Eve Arden, Buddy Ebsen, Zasu Pitts, Fay Wray, Lou Costello, Bing Crosby, Sophie Tucker, and many others.She also kept separate sections of photos as a record of plays performed at the Cambridge Summer Theatre, which she had seen and taken photos of. The first is of Ruth Chatterton in Sorrows for Angels by George D. Batson in 1941 which includes 27 photos of the show as well as the playbill. The second is Lenore Ulric as Sadie Thompson in Rain in 1941 with 11 photos and a program signed by Ulric. Der bildparallel angelegte Liegestuhl mit der Lesenden nimmt die gesamte Breite des Blattes ein. Rechts im Hintergrund ist ein Fenster durch einer mit wenigen Strichen skizzierte Gardine angedeutet. Der hell lavierte Hintergrund links hebt den Kopf der Lesenden hervor. Vermutlich handelt es sich bei der Lesenden Frau um Hartmanns Ehefrau Ida Jenichen. Erich Hartmann leistet einen entscheidenden Beitrag zur Ausbildung und Entwicklung des expressiv realistischen Hamburger Sezessionsstils um 1930. Nach seinem Studium an der Düsseldorfer und Münchener Akademie kommt er 1918 in seine Wahlheimat Hamburg. Ein Jahr später tritt er der Hamburgischen Sezession bei. 1922-44 unterrichtet Hartmann an der privaten Kunstschule Gerda Koppel, an der bedeutende Avantgarde-Maler wie Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann und Eduard Bargheer zu seinen Kollegen zählen. Durch die Vermittlung von Fritz Schumacher erhält Hartmann mehrere öffentliche Aufträge. 1937 - im Entstehungsjahr des Aqarells - an der Hamburger Kunsthalle und in Stettin Arbeiten von Hartmann durch die Nationalsozialisten entfernt. Nach dem Krieg ist Hartmann von 1946-53 Leiter der Malklasse an der Landeskunstschule Hamburg. Ende der 1940er Jahre löst sich Hartmann von seinen Vorbildern und beschreitet einen eigenen Weg, bei dem er die Form der Farbe unterordnet. Seine späten Arbeiten bewegen sich zwischen Abstraktion und Gegenständlichkeit. - Minimal gebräunt, wenige unbedeutende Fleckchen. Am Unterrand wohl etwas beschnitten, aber ohne Darstellungsverlust. Die Mutter sendet Zeichnungen Schürchs an Ferdinand Hodler, der ihnen rät, nach Genf zu ziehen. 1916 für zwei Monate an der Ecole des Beaux-Arts und an der Privatschule Eugène Gilliards. Schürch wird Hodlers Gehilfe. 1921-1922 weilt Schürch in Florenz, wo er Max Gubler und Max Hunziker begegnet. Danach in Minusio und Brione. Freundschaft mit Fritz Pauli und Ignaz Epper. 1934 zieht er nach Ascona und verkehrt in den Künstlerkreisen im Umfeld des Monte Verità. 1941 stirbt Schürch an offener Tuberkulose. Bekannt wurde Schürch durch seine detailliert ausgearbeitete Feder- und Bleistiftzeichnungen sowie Radierungen von Dirnen, Proletariern und Zirkusartisten, Dämonen, weiblichen Akten und Todesmotiven. Dvoyre Fogel (sometimes referred to as "Debora Vogel") was born in 1902 in Burshtyn (Galicia, now Ukraine) in a non-observant, Polish-speaking home. During World War I the family fled to Vienna and later moved to Lwów, where Fogel spent most of her life. She graduated from the Lwów Jewish gymnasium, where she was active in the Zionist youth movement Ha-Shomer ha-Za'ir and studied philosophy in Vienna and Polish literature in Cracow, receiving her Ph.D. in 1926. Her doctoral dissertation charts the influence of Hegel's aesthetics upon Jozef Kremer (1806-1875), philosopher and scholar of aesthetics and art history. Fogel taught psychology at a Hebrew teachers' college in Lwów. In 1932 she married a Lwów architect and engineer named Barenblit. Her only son, Anshel, was born in 1937. Together with her husband and son, Fogel was killed in the Lwów ghetto in 1942. While at the university Fogel wrote German poetry, but gradually became familiar with Yiddish literature and began to write in that language, although it was not spoken in her home. She became active in Yiddish literary circles and wrote articles for various local Yiddish journals as well as for the Polish journals Sygnaty and Wiadmosci Literackie. She participated in the short-lived Lwów Yiddish journal of literature and art Tsushteyer (1929-1931), contributing a two-part essay on the art of Marc Chagall and other art reviews, besides her own poems and essays on poetry. Fogel's remarkable experimental poetry, all written in the 1930s, was, in the spirit of early twentieth-century art, radically avant-garde and attuned to modernist minimalism. She attempted to fuse modern art and poetry in a new style that she termed "white words," striving, as she put it, to create a new lyric poetry of the urban condition: a poetry of cool stasis and of geometric ornamentation with a rhythm of repetition that can replace melodiousness and dynamism, in which monotone becomes theme. In her creative prose she employed repetitive detached impressions ("montages") to achieve the same goals. Contemporary and later critics considered her style too intellectual, studied and obscure, and lacking in traditional Jewish and feminine thematics. Yet Fogel herself regarded her project not as a deliberate experiment, but rather as "a necessity, achieved and paid for with life's experience."She published two books of Yiddish poetry-Tog-Figurn (Day-Figures, 1930) and Manekinen (Mannequins, 1934)-and a book of short sketches, Akatsyes Bliyen (Acacias Bloom, 1935) in both Polish and Yiddish. Her poems, prose and essays appeared in New York, in the Introspectivist monthly journal Inzikh (1936, 1937, 1938) and in the quarterly Bodn (1937). Öl auf Hartfaserplatte in schlichtem Atelierrahmen. *Melzer war zunächst als Porzellanmaler tätig, 1903 Beginn eines Kunststudiums in Weimar, 1906 wurde er Schüler von Prof. L. von Hoffmann. Als Mitbegründer der Neuen Secession baute er in den Jahren 1910/11 gemeinsam mit Georg Tappert die Schule für freie und angewandte Kunst auf und entwickelte nach impressionistischen Anfängen einen ganz individuellen expressiven Figuralstil. Großen Einfluss hatten 1912/13 Studienaufenthalte in Paris und Florenz. 1918 wurde er Mitbegründer der \"Novembergruppe\" und seit 1921 auch Lehrer an der Reimannschule. Im Nationalsozialismus wurden seine Bilder als entartet eingestuft und aus den Museen entfernt. Melzer blieb ein Individualist und ist keiner bestimmten Stilrichtung zuzuordnen.       Wien, Fayer, o. J. [um 1930?]. Mit Prägestempel und eighd. Signatur des Fotografen. - Abzug auf Karton montiert, darunter Namensschildchen, Karton m. Gbrsp. sowie Resten von drei Klebefilmstreifen. - Berg, (1883 - 1956), versuchte sich bereits mit 15 Jahren als Komiker am Stadttheater in Leitmeritz; Engagements in Teplitz, Mährisch-Ostrau und Aussig folgten. Erste größere Erfolge hatte er gemeinsam mit Heinrich Eisenbach als Mitglied des Budapester Orpheum in Wien, dem er 17 Jahre lang angehörte. In der Folge trat er in diversen Kabaretts und Lokalen auf, wie dem Theater der Komiker im St. Annahof (Wien), an dessen Führung er sich eine Zeit lang beteiligte, und dem Ronacher. Am 2. Juli 1907 heiratete er die aus Vevey stammende Artistin Susanne Emilie Flückiger. Er spielte auch in einigen österreichischen Filmproduktionen mit, unter anderem in Charly, der Wunderaffe (1915, Regie: Joe May) und der Verfilmung des Hugo Bettauer-Romans Die Stadt ohne Juden. Berg flüchtete 1938 in die USA, wo er vom Verkauf von Papierwaren notdürftig lebte. Hin und wieder hatte er die Möglichkeit, Vorstellungen zu geben, wie im New Yorker Exilkabarett „Kabarett der Komiker“. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Wien 1949 war er unter anderem im Simpl engagiert und gab einige Gastspiele in Amsterdam und Zürich. Nachdem er keine weiteren Engagements hatte, zog er nochmals in die USA. Von 1954 bis zu seinem Tod lebte er wieder in Wien. Seine Grabstelle befindet sich auf dem Wiener Zentralfriedhof im neuen israelitischen Teil, Tor IV. He was especially known for his long tradition of painting cats. . He was a member of the central Academy of Fine Arts as a teachers, and in the Ministry of Light Industry Arts and crafts company cadres, and was a member of the Chinese Artists Association . STUDIO NAMES FOR CAO Kejia: CAO Ke Jia used "studio" names:"Yu Yin," "Ru Xian," "K`e-chia Ts'ao." In this example the artist used and signed his actual name rather than using a "studio" name. . There is a verticle mild stain line on the right side of the front cover. The back cover is clean with a faint touch of 2-3 similar mild stains to the front cover, else clean, solid, square. . There are a few old water or damp stains on pages 1-3 and on the last page. These are by and large mild. . The accordion hinges are solidly intact. . The verso of the accordion folded leaves [not the back of the painted leaves] show some old brushed color places, these do not have any relationship to the actual book or its paintings, but is merely on the backing paper of the leaves. . The period painted pages are laid paper, as usual this is "toned" with age, being 85 years old. Ein beiliegendes, handschriftliches Verzeichnis in Französischer Sprache erläutert an Hand der Nummern aber exakt die Motive: anfangs wenige spanische Motive (die Reise führte offenbar über Spanien), dann nach Tanger, Salé, Rabat, Marrakesch, Moulay Idris, Agadir, Oase von Assaka, gegen Ende dann noch ein wenig Mittelmeer und Marseille. 4500 Gramm.
