Two years before he is appointed to the Supreme Court by President Herbert Hoover, Benjamin Cardozo, Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals, advises his predecessor as Chief Judge, Frank S. Hiscock to ?hold out an olive branch to the Governor,? Franklin D. Roosevelt, in an address he is to make to the annual meeting of the New York State Bar Association of which he is president.

Albany, [New York], January 7, 1930. 5.75" x 8". "Autograph Letter Signed ?B.N.C.? as Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals, 2.5 pages, 5.75? x 8?, separate conjoined sheets with conclusion on verso of first page. Albany [New York], January 7, 1930. Salutation ?My dear Chief? [former Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals, Frank S. Hiscock].On January 17, 1930, Cardozo?s predecessor as Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals, Frank H. Hiscock, spoke at the 53rd annual meeting of the New York State Bar Association. Hiscock, now president of the State Bar, had retired from the bench at the end of 1926 when he reached the constitutional age limit of 70 years. Hiscock had sent Judge Cardozo a copy of the address he planned to deliver. In full, ?Thank you for sending me a copy of your address which I have read with interest. I see nothing of substance to be criticized. Perhaps on p. 3, it might be well to omit the statement that our court ?has repeatedly adjourned for lack of business.? The public might think we were without there was no different cause for preserving us. You might say, ?and does not adjourn until all the cases read for argument have been heard.??On the page before the last, (at the end of the page) you might hold out an olive branch to the Governor [Franklin D. Roosevelt] by saying that it ought not to be difficult to provide for some partial representation of laymen on the commission if such representation is thought desirable.. I cannot think of anything else. Faithfully yours.?Hiscock took Cardozo?s advice. ?The New York Times? reported on January 18, 1930, that in his address, ?Judge Hiscock outlined the movement launched by the association to make a survey of the administration of justice, and disclosed that the survey had been handicapped by the inability of the committee, headed by William C. Breed, to obtain the necessary funds. Judge Hiscock estimated that at least $75,000 would be required for the survey. He referred to the Governor?s veto of an appropriation of $60,000 for the survey on the ground that laymen were not represented on the commission and suggested a new attempt to obtain the passage of a measure.?On February 6, 1930, Governor Roosevelt met with a delegation from the Executive Committee of the New York Bar Association headed by former Judge Hiscock. ?The New York Times? reported that a ?bill sponsored by the Republicans was passed last year, but the Governor vetoed it because it provided for an investigation commission composed exclusively of lawyers, while he had insisted that there should be a liberal sprinkling of laymen on it. ?I am now very hopeful that a bill we be passed on which all hands can agree,? the Governor said after the conference today. ?I am glad the Governor said that,? Senator John Knight [President pro tempore of the N.Y. State Senate and a Republican] remarked when informed of the Governor?s statement. ?If he wants some lay members on the commission, we have no objection.??"

[Photo Album]: 1930's Ranch Life in the Black Hills of South Dakota

Black Hills, South Dakota. [circa 1930]. Thick oblong small octavo. String-tied black card wrappers with printed illustration and with "Photographs Souvenir of The Black Hills" printed in gold on the top board. Chipping on the boards, and with chips at the extremities of the blank black pages, good only; the images are very good or better, a few with small nicks or wear. The large majority are captioned in ink, usually in the top margin of the image. 142 mostly glossy black and white gelatin silver photographs, most measuring about 2.75" x 4.5". The album documents life at "The Gumbo Ranch" owned by Victor Carroll, which was located near Bear Butte, South Dakota, as well as some surrounding scenes in Wyoming, and a few in Nebraska and Chicago. Most of the photos are of a working ranch and nearby towns, with many of surrounding towns, Sturgis, Paxton, Leads, Savoy, Deadwood, and other Black Hills and Badlands locations. The photographs tell a lively story that include many taken on the ranch (buildings, many of working ranch hands and cowboys, livestock, equipment, threshing, road building, etc.), interesting images of a cyclone or tornado, the Deadwood Rodeo, a gold mine at Leads, a grasshopper swarm and its resulting devastation, scenery (Devil's Tower, The Needles, Bear Butte, Mt. Rushmore under construction, buffalo herds), nearby facilities (Hotel at Lake Adams, the Tea Room at Mt. Coolidge, the Post Office in Savoy, St. Wenceslaus Church in Tabor, etc.), and more. Despite the touristic nature of the album cover, this seems less touristic than it is the documentation of an actual working ranch. A nice album. While tourist albums of the Black Hills area turn up, albums of daily life in the area are much less common. .

Dimensions are 45,5cm (high), 34cm (wide), 13cm (thick).. no place, c. 1930. Folio. 1. Original Hardcover with leather covered boards. Hard to qualify this exceptional piece as Ephemera, but that is what it is. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Dimensions are 45,5cm (high), 34cm (wide), 13cm (thick). St Mawr is a short novel (or novella) written by D. H. Lawrence. It was first published in 1925. The heroine of the story, Lou Witt, abandons her sterile marriage and a brittle, cynical post-First World War England. Her sense of alienation is associated with her encounter with a high-spirited stallion, the St Mawr whose name provides the title for this tale. She eventually settles in a remote ranch set high in the mountains of New Mexico, near Taos. Lawrence wrote most of this brief novel whilst spending five months of the summer of 1924 at what is now known as the D. H. Lawrence Ranch, a property which he and wife, Frieda, acquired from Mabel Dodge Luhan earlier that year. St Mawr first appeared in St Mawr and Other Stories which, in addition to the novella, consists of two short stories 'The Overtone' and 'The Princess', and two unfinished stories 'The Wilful Woman' and 'The Flying Fish'. All these works were written during Lawrence's stay in America between 1922 and 1925. (Wikipedia)

        Dance Night

A.L. Burt, New York 1930 - Reprint. A tiny, faint stain at the bottom of the first couple of leaves, else fine in an attractive, good plus dustwrapper with several small chips, tears, and internal repairs. A pleasing copy of this reprint of the author's exceptionally uncommon fourth book, the reprint itself is exceptionally uncommon. Powell was a prolific and well-regarded, but, until a relatively recent and well-deserved revival, mostly forgotten author. For forty years she was a valued jewel of the New York literary world and if you read her books it's easy to see why. Any jacketed copy of this title and of this vintage is very scarce. The principles of quantum mechanics. Boris Podolsky's copy

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1930. Dirac, Paul A. M. (1902-84). The principles of quantum mechanics. x, 257, [1]pp. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1930. 237 x 155 mm. Original cloth, a little shaken, spine rubbed and faded, light wear at extremities and corners. Foxing and toning but a good copy. From the library of Russian-American physicist Boris Podolsky (1896-1966), with his signature on the title and occasional marginal notes in ink and pencil. First Edition of Dirac?s classic treatise on quantum mechanics, containing ?the first complete exposition of the general formalism of quantum mechanics, presented in a logically consistent and axiomatic fashion? (Jammer, Conceptual Development of Quantum Mechanics, p. 366). ?Except for Darwin?s Origin of Species, no book since Newton?s Principia explained so much of so wide a realm of nature. It is difficult to think of another physics text that conveys more effectively the power of a simple, logical presentation. Probably no other book has ever given its readers a greater appreciation of the aesthetic dimension of theoretical physics? (Schweber, QED and the Men who Made It, p. 573). ?Present expositions of quantum mechanics largely rely on [Dirac?s] masterpiece The Principles of Quantum Mechanics? (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). This copy is from the library of Boris Podolsky, best known for his collaboration with Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen on the famous ?EPR? (Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen) paper (?Can quantum-mechanical description of physical reality be considered complete?,? 1935) challenging the assumption that quantum mechanics could provide a complete description of physical reality. The EPR paper, which was actually written by Podolsky, became ?a centerpiece in the debate over the interpretation of quantum theory, a debate that continues today? (Thomas, Kelly Devine, ?The Advent and Fallout of EPR.? Institute for Advanced Study, Fall 2013. Web. Accessed 05 Jan. 2016).

October 1930. 1930. Archive of 11 large rough proof photographs of the R101 airship disaster, the photographs measure 12'' x 10'' [6] and 10'' x 8'' [5]. A total of 46 of the 54 passengers and crew were killed immediately. Rigger's S. Church and W. G. Radcliffe survived the crash but later died in hospital in Beauvais, bringing the total of dead to 48. The bodies were returned to England and on Friday 10 October a memorial service took place at St Paul's Cathedral while the bodies lay in state in Westminster Hall at the Palace of Westminster. Nearly 90,000 people queued to pay their respects: at one time the queue was half a mile long, and the hall was kept open until 12:35 am to admit them all. The following day a funeral procession transferred the bodies to Euston station through streets crowded with mourners: the bodies were then taken to Cardington village for burial in a common grave in the cemetery of St Mary's church. A monument was later erected, and the scorched Royal Air Force Ensign which R101 had flown on its tail is on display, along with a memorial tablet, in the church's nave. On 27 November 2014, 84 years after the disaster, Baroness Smith of Basildon, together with members of the Airship Heritage Trust, unveiled a memorial plaque to the R101 in St Stephens Hall in the Palace of Westminster.

        The Hunter - Lake Pomo

Boston: Suffolk Engraving Company, 1930. Photogravure after Edward Curtis, printed by the Suffolk Engraving Company, wove paper (watermarked 'Van Gelder Zonen Made in Holland'). Very good condition apart from some slight discolouration of the paper along the extreme edge of the top right margin. A breath-taking image from "The North American Indian", the grandest illustrated work ever produced in the United States, the most important illustrated work on Native Americans, and the single greatest book in Western Americana. Only the double-elephant folio edition of Audubon's "Birds of America" surpasses Curtis in its massive ambition and beauty of execution. "...Because of the singular combination of qualities with which he has been blessed, and because of his extraordinary success in making and using his opportunities... (Curtis) has been able to do what no other man has ever done; what, as far as we can see, no other man could do. He is an artist who works out of doors and not in a closet. He is a close observer, whose qualities of mind and body fit him to make his observations out in the field, surrounded by the wild life he commemorates. He has lived on intimate terms with many different tribes of the mountains and the plains. He knows them as they hunt, as they travel, as they go about their various avocations on the march and in camp. He knows their medicine men and their sorcerers, their chiefs and warriors, their young men and maidens. He has not only seen their vigorous outward existence, but has caught glimpses, such as few white men ever catch, into that strange spiritual and mental life of theirs; from whose inner most recesses all white men are forever barred...." (Theodore Roosevelt, Foreword to Volume I) "The scene is Clear Lake. The abundant tules along its shallows formerly supplied the natives with material for house coverings, mats, garments, and balsas, and sheltered teeming flocks of waterfowl" (Curtis, Frontispiece to Volume XIV). Renowned for their unrivalled basketry skills, the Pomo tribe inhabited Northern California. Edward Curtis was fascinated by the story of the Native Americans from childhood. His in-depth knowledge of the various tribes increased in parallel with his skill as a photographer during his participation in a number of scientific expeditions in the 1890s. In 1896, Curtis began to take photographs of the Native American tribes (by 1930 he had taken over 40,000 negatives of eighty tribes) and evolve his hugely ambitious plan for a comprehensive work which would illustrate his romantic vision of Native American life before the disastrous impact of European contact. With the enthusiastic support of President Theodore Roosevelt (who wrote the foreword to the present work) and the financial backing of J. Pierpont Morgan (Curtis was introduced to him by Roosevelt), the publishing project finally got under way in 1906. Pierpont Morgan died in 1913 just before the completion of the ninth volume, but his son agreed to continue underwriting the project; between them, they eventually contributed about a third of the $1,500,000 cost. What had originally been projected to take five or six years eventually stretched to twenty-three, finally reaching a conclusion in 1930 but leaving Curtis a broken and bankrupt man. Nonetheless, his grand design was completed, and his work remains as his monument. Cf. Naef & Goldschmidt The Truthful Lens 40; cf. Howes C-965.

        Salem [Schule Schloss Salem]

Salem, Germany: The Salem School, 1930. First Edition. First Edition. Publisher's half vellum with decorative gold string over textured handmade paper. An album produced in a small limited edition, targeting American supporters for the purpose of raising funds for the then-new school. Though today the school is one of the most elite in all of Europe, and with several locations, it had virtually no funding at the time of this volume's publication. Kurt Hahn and Karl Reinhardt founded the Schule Schloss Salem (or Salem School) in 1920 with the support of Prince Maximilian of Baden, introducing an "education reform" which encouraged progressive methods, developing the unique talents of each student. The focus was not on academic performance but on the development of character. Hahn was a key figure in the development of progressive and experiential education, strongly influencing many modern-day alternative educational institutions. He also founded the Atlantic College, Outward Bound, the United World College, and other major worldwide institutions. Included are sections on "The Seven Laws of Salem," "Salem Certificate of Maturity," and "Reproduction of Kurt Hahn's Film Lecture." The "film lecture" includes 49 original mounted black and white photographs in various sizes showing Prince Max von Baden, the faculty, the students, and many shots of the school. Some of the images depict students engaged in activities such as field hockey, skiing, jogging, dancing, archery, or performing a play. Others show students at work and in the classroom. A rare volume. The text for this example is in English, and though there was presumably a German-language version produced as well, we have never encountered another copy. Minor soil and some sunning and minor foxing to the boards, slight rubbing to the spine. Some rippling to the leaves around some photographs due to aging of the glue, photographs not affected. Edges of a few photographs slightly oxidized. In Very Good plus condition overall.

        Treatise on Money

1930 - KEYNES, John Maynard. A Treatise on Money. London: Macmillan, 1930. Two volumes. Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jackets. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $7500.First edition of Keynes’ important work on monetary theory, in rare original dust jackets."The world-wide slump after 1929 prompted Keynes to attempt an explanation of, and new methods for controlling the vagaries of the trade-cycle" (PMM 423). "In 1930, Keynes brought out his heavy, two-volume Treatise on Money, which effectively set out his Wicksellian theory of the credit cycle. In it, the rudiments of a liquidity preference theory of interest are laid out and Keynes believed it would be his magnum opus…[however, criticism was swift and extreme] and the Treatise led to the formation of a reading group, known as 'the circus,' composed of young Cambridge economists Richard Kahn and others… Kahn dutifully delivered reports of the Circus's discussions to Keynes, who subsequently began revising his ideas. One resulting criticism of the Treatise was that it failed to provide a theory of the determination of output and employment as a wholeâ€" a particular pertinent question given the huge amount of unemployment at the time" (History of Economic Thought). As a result of the controversy over the Treatise on Money, and the subsequent discussions and debates that arose from it, Keynes produced his greatest work, The General Theory, which literally began a revolution in American economics. AMEX 254. Books near-fine, with a single tear to head of each spine and slight toning to spines. Rare dust jackets with expert restoration. A desirable copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        My Early Life.

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited,, 1930. A Roving Commission. Octavo. Original dark pink cloth, titles to spine and front board gilt, publisher's device to boards in blind. Frontispiece and 15 plates from photographs, maps and plans. Spine sunned, the presentation leaf somewhat browned, a few minor spots, a very good copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy to his South African friend Sir Abraham ("Abe") Bailey, inscribed by the author on the blank preceding the half-title, "To Abe from Winston. Oct 15. 1930". A superb association: Churchill first met Abe Bailey (1864?-1940) during the Second Boer War, the events of which feature memorably as the climax to this book. Bailey, who divided his time between South Africa and London, remained a lifelong friend of Churchill's, acting as his financial adviser and quiet political promoter. The meeting of 3 December 1916 which led to Lloyd George succeeding Herbert Asquith as prime minister was held in Bailey's London home, and Bailey urged Lloyd George to have Churchill in his new government. A man of considerable wealth and influence, Bailey continued to meet and correspond with Churchill throughout his life. Churchill's daughter Diana married Bailey's eldest son, John, in 1932; although the union proved short lived, this did not alter their friendship. Churchill does not mention Bailey by name in the book, but short pencil strokes in the margins suggest that Bailey read the book with attention, particularly the later chapters dealing with South Africa.
