Thus; the first printing of this Pulitzer prize winner. Corners of boards peeking through the black cloth. Red titles to spine and front board age-dulled, but still easily legible. Maroon topstain also a bit age-dulled, but uninterrupted.       New York, Toronto: Longmans, Green and Co.,. 1930. original gray cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black.. Bookplate of noted collector William Harry Hopkins affixed to front. paste-down. A fine copy in very good pictorial dust jacket (designed. by Hermann Post) with light wear at edges and two closed tears, each. with internal tape mend. A bright, attractive example of an uncommon. jacket. (#149271). First U.S. edition. The U.S. edition adds a preface by Wright dated "New York, January 15, 1930" that did not appear in the 1929 Collins edition. A superior novel in which Wright explores human evolution based on degeneration of the race due primarily to continual destruction of past civilizations through the misuse of scientific discoveries. Comprises "The Amphibians," first published in book form in 1925, and its sequel, "The World Below," first published here. A third book was planned but never written. The story is "set in the far future, when humans are extinct and forgotten ... the time traveling protagonist accidentally precipitates a crisis in the affairs of a race of telepathic Amphibians who coexist with the giant humanoid Dwellers ... the first part [is] an imaginative tour de force." - Anatomy of Wonder (1981) 2-128. THE AMPHIBIANS is "a work comparable in its scope only to [Wells's ] THE TIME MACHINE and [Hodgson's] THE NIGHT LAND." - Stableford, Scientific Romance in Britain 1890-1950, pp. 183-85. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 3-72; (1981) 2-128; (1987) 2-144; (1995) 2-154; and (2004) II-1293. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 2437. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 833.       London: Cresset Press, 1930. No. 264 OF 350 COPIES on paper (and three on vellum) n. Hardcover. 335 x 205 mm (13 1/8 x 8"). 5 p.l., xv-xxiii, [1], 133 pp., [1] leaf. No. 264 OF 350 COPIES on paper (and three on vellum). Original vellum-backed cream-colored silk covers, flat spine gilt lettered, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. In the original ivory printed dust jacket (later enhanced neatly with color). Additional title and 12 illustrations (headpieces) by John Nash, colored by stencil process (title page and headpiece for January with colors enlivened by a previous owner). Ransom, p. 8. Front panel of dust jacket missing a 3/8" portion halfway across the top and with a significant adjacent closed tear, minor soiling, other trivial imperfections, but without restoration and otherwise excellent; the volume itself in very fine condition inside and out. This appealing production from the Cresset Press is the earliest important work by Spenser, first published in 1579. Its 12 eclogues, which mostly take the form of dialogues among shepherds, deal with love, Queen Elizabeth, religion, right conduct, singing, and poetry. Although John Nash (1893-1977) was a remarkably versatile painter and illustrator, he is best remembered for his wood engravings, which grace a number of private press books. The uncommonly seen dust jacket is a bonus in its own right and for the protection it has provided the delicate silk boards, so easily soiled, but here remaining clean and bright.

        The Savoy Cocktail Book

London: Constable, 1930. First edition. Octavo, original half black cloth, pictorial endpapers. Illustrations by Gilbert Rumbold. In near fine condition. An exceptional example. Savoy Cocktail Book features 750 of Harry Craddock?'s most popular recipes. It is a fascinating record of the cocktails that set London alight at the time—and which are just as popular today. From Slings to Smashes, Fizzes to Flips, and featuring art deco illustrations, Harry Craddock was "the king of cocktail shakers," and The Savoy Cocktail Books contains humorous anecdotes on the origin of the cocktail and its purpose ("for the solace of man"), as well as "an elucidation of the Manners and Customs of people of quality in a period of some equality." "Behind every great bartender (literally) is a roughed-up, stained copy of The Savoy Cocktail's been an industry must-have since its first edition" (GQ).

        Don Quixote de la Mancha

London: Nonesuch Press, 1930. Two octavo volumes, original full tan niger morocco, raised bands, maroon spine labels lettered in gilt, top edges rough gilt, pages uncut. With twenty-one color illustrations by E. McKnight Kauffer throughout text. Presentation inscription from Kauffer to Roger Fry on limitation page. Rubbing to spine ends and corners, boards lightly mottled. Nonesuch edition of Cervantes's great picaresque novel, limited to 1475 copies, with twenty-one color plates by E. McKnight Kauffer. Originally issued in two parts in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote begins as a parody of chivalric romances, but expands to examine the whole of Spanish society through the adventures of the deluded Quixote and his long-suffering companion Sancho Panza. This edition follows the 1743 English translation of Motteux and Ozell: "A world of disorderly Notions, pick'd out of his Books, crouded into his Imagination; and now his Head was full of nothing but Inchantments, Quarrels, Battles, Challenges, Wounds, Complaints, Amours, Torments, and abundance of Stuff and Impossibilities." This copy is warmly inscribed by the illustrator, E. McKnight Kauffer: "for Roger Fry, without whose encouragement this book would not have been done -- E. McKnight Kauffer, 1930." The preeminent English art critic of his day, Fry was instrumental in promoting Kauffer's art through the Omega Workshops, the influential Bloomsbury design collective that Fry directed with Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant; in 1925, Fry contributed the introduction to the printed catalogue of Kauffer's modernist posters. A near-fine copy of the most influential work of Spanish literature, with an important English art historical association.

Forty Famous Cocktails : Being a Compendium of Reliable Recipes Carefully Compiled For Use In This Arid Era Engraved with Humble Apologies to that Master Engraver John Held Jr [Title from recto]

New York: Colonial Sales Corp, 1930. Two pieces of printed pictorial cardboard, glued together on three sides and with view windows cut on both sides, and with double-sided sliding cardboard insert with printed recipes. 9.5 cm. x 14 cm. The smaller and simultaneously printed version of the otherwise almost identical movable cocktail recipe book featuring humorous illustrations in the style of celebrated barroom artist John Held (engraved by John Boland), and an imaginative sliding display for the cocktail recipes. In this smaller edition, the eyes of the bartender are not punched out, and therefore do not show the many funny expressions included on the sliding card. The illustration on the verso of this piece is captioned, "The Road to Perdition or a Scene from the Back Room when Life Was Simple." The mention of "this arid era" in the title suggests a pre-repeal publication date. We've now handled a number of these, and this is the first we've seen to which a printer's slug advertising Martini & Rossi vermouth has been added to the sliding card. Light wear to cardboard edges, with additional wear to insert pull-tab at top, some light staining and color-fading, else near very good. Scarce. [OCLC locates two copies of all versions of this work, at SMU's DeGolyer Library and at Virginia Tech].

SEIDMANN-FREUD, TOM. FREUD,TOM SEIDMANN. DAS ZAUBERBOOT. Berlin: Stuffer 1930 (1929 7-11 tausand). 4to (8 x 9 1/2"), cloth backed pictorial boards, light cover soil and a few internal spots else VG-fine and complete. This is a very rare MOVEABLE BOOK done by the niece of Sigmund Freud. Her moveable books were immediately hailed for their innovations, but because of her Jewish heritage, most copies of her books were destroyed and very few remain intact today. In this book, there are a variety of moveable pages including a revolving wheel and a Punch and Judy theatre. There is also a grid with cut-outs that enables the reader to develop 4 different stories from one page, and a clever tale that lets the reader make part of the illustrations disappear using special red paper. Hurlimann (p. 216-17) mentions these innovative books, remarkable not only for their moveable parts but for their integration of suitable text with artistic achievement.

Herrn Ing. Heinz Schirmer in Nürnberg / Bayern. Entwurf: M 1:50. 1:25. Ausgeführt von Jorg Jarosch Dipl. Arch. Wien i.

It is our privilege to attest, and we gratefully acknowledge, that without such assistance the accomplishment of the Expedition in the Antarctic would not have been possible .

[USA, Byrd Aviation Associates, 1930?] - A very large certificate (printed surface 420 x 265 mm, mounted on stiff strawboard) with numerous decorations and 13 vignette illustrations (one with a little applied colour) on polar themes; the design is credited to Harold Butterfield. It is signed in ink by Byrd and the Chairman of the Company, James Bush. Offered together with a companion booklet by Byrd, 'Into the Home of the Blizzard' (1928; octavo, [32] pages), with the recipient's name and the copy number (X-204) written in ink - but not by Byrd - on the presentation page. The cover of the booklet is a little fingermarked; it is still housed in the original mailing box with Byrd's printed label on it. On the front panel of the box a juvenile hand has executed a neat pencil drawing of the 'Bear', one of the ships used on the Byrd Antarctic Expedition II, 1933-35.         God Save the King.

Paris: Hours Press,, [1930]. Tall octavo. Original black sheepskin spine, gilt lettered, decorated boards designed by John Banting, untrimmed. A little wear to head and tail of spine, touch of foxing to prelims. An exceptionally nice copy. First and limited edition, number 29 of 150 copies signed by the author. This is the the only substantial poetry collection of Brian Howard (1905-1958), one of the Eton Arts Society group with Harold Acton, Oliver Messel, Anthony Powell, and Henry Yorke; at Oxford he knew Evelyn Waugh and Waugh, writing later that Howard "dazzled me rather 25 years ago", drew on him for the character of Ambrose Silk in Put Out More Flags and Anthony Blanche in Brideshead Revisited. There is a potted biography of him in The Diaries of Evelyn Waugh, edited by Michael Davie: "peripatetic life in Europe; early and articulate anti-Fascist; occasional reviewer for New Statesman; RAF aircraftman in World War II; committed suicide by an overdose of drugs [following the death of his lover]; buried Nice cemetery. A notorious and extravagant aesthete-homosexual, described by Waugh, borrowing Lady Caroline Lamb's words, as 'mad, bad, and dangerous to know'".
