(p. 78). - Das Archiv beruhte lange Zeit im Wesentlichen auf der Ordnung, wie sie von Fürstabt Plazidus Reimann (od. Reymann; 1594-1670, Abt seit 1629) eingeführt worden war. ?Ueber die Archivare des Stiftes vor Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts ist keine Nachricht auf uns gekommen, aber auch keine Nachricht über die Art und Weise der Aufbewahrung und Ordnung dieser kostbaren Dokumente.? (p. 3). - Da P. Norbert unmöglich noch ein Register anfügen konnte, ist der spezifische Zugriff auf das komplexe und umfangreiche Material nur über das detaillierte Inhaltsverzeichnis zu suchen (Index: Bl. III-XI). In seinem Schlusswort (pp. 317-322) beschreibt P. Norbert zusammenfassend den Zustand des Archivs mit seinen Baustellen im Prinzip als ?heutzutage in guter Ordnung, und doch ist stetsfort eine Unmasse von Arbeit für es zu leisten, die so zeitraubend ist, dass ein langes, über alles fleissiges Menschenleben nicht hinreicht, dass der Archivar sich ruhigen Herzens einer grössern schriftstellerischen Arbeit hingeben könnte.? (p. 317). Und er listet resümierend die mannigfachen Probleme und Mängel auf, welche anzugehen und zu beheben wären: ?So sind z.B. die Akten der Schweizerischen Benediktiner Congregation wenig geordnet und nicht registriert, welche Arbeit wohl in einem Jahre nicht gemacht werden kann. [.] Einige Summarien sind stockfleckig und sogar verlöchert [.], die Akten selber liegen im Staub, in traurigen Mappen und Umschlägen. [.] Viele Akten im Archiv sollten copiert werden, weil sie beschädigt, zerrissen, stockfleckig, verblasst sind, und doch erhalten werden sollten. [.] In den Archivgewölben stehen auf allen Gestellen eine Menge Bände, sie sind nicht signiert und registriert. Es existiert nicht einmal ein Verzeichnis davon. Auch das sollte gemacht werden.? Élève de l´École nationale des arts décoratifs à Paris et de Jules Adler. Adrien Sénéchal réalisa un grand nombre d´affiches et de portraits. Sa série de 18 pastels représentant l´incendie de la cathédrale de Reims fut présentée à Paris. en 1919. à la galerie Georges Petit. en la présence du président de la République Raymond Poincaré et du président des États-Unis Thomas Wilson. En 1925. il décora entièrement la chapelle des Filles de la Charité. rue Féry à Reims. peinture et conception du mobilier. avec la participation d´Eugène Bourgouin. De cette oeuvre il ne reste plus que la statue de la Vierge de ce dernier. Il épousa à Ligny-en-Barrois en 1937 Yvonne Germaine Simon. Saint-Valery-sur-Somme ist eine Kleinstadt im zur französischen Region Picardie gehörenden Département Somme mit 2818 Einwohnern (Stand 1. Januar 2010).       Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston and New York 1930 - Dated 1930 to both copyright page and bottom of title page; no later dates or printings mentioned. Thus; the first printing of this Pulitzer Prize winner. NO dust jacket. Will close its own text block, but we'll call it "good plus" as the top board corners have worn through the black cloth and there's some fraying to top and bottom of spine. Red titles to spine and front board age-dulled, but still easily legible. Book may once have had a topstain, but color no longer discernible. (Our other first printing shows a maroon topstain.) This copy is complete with endpapers and half-title page. A metallic-backed sticker has been adhered to rear pastedown reading "This Book May Not Be Taken From the Library," but there are NO other signs of library stampings or attachments. Interior text block lovely and unmarked. Author Barnes attended Bryn Mawr College 1903-1907 and served as alumnae director for the school from 1920-1923. Bryn Mawr and characters based on two of its pre-1930 presidents, M. Carey Thomas and Marion Park, feature prominently in this autobiographical novel. The author's manuscripts and some of her papers now reside at the Bryn Mawr Library. This copy bears the previous owner's name "Katharine E. McBride" to FFE, in a forceful script. Katharine Elizabeth McBride (1904-1976) served as the fourth president of Bryn Mawr College, 1942-1970; her copy. We also offer another first printing (lacking its free endpapers) and several later printings, including a signed copy.       October 1930. 1930. Archive of 11 large rough proof photographs of the R101 airship disaster, the photographs measure 12'' x 10'' [6] and 10'' x 8'' [5]. A total of 46 of the 54 passengers and crew were killed immediately. Rigger's S. Church and W. G. Radcliffe survived the crash but later died in hospital in Beauvais, bringing the total of dead to 48. The bodies were returned to England and on Friday 10 October a memorial service took place at St Paul's Cathedral while the bodies lay in state in Westminster Hall at the Palace of Westminster. Nearly 90,000 people queued to pay their respects: at one time the queue was half a mile long, and the hall was kept open until 12:35 am to admit them all. The following day a funeral procession transferred the bodies to Euston station through streets crowded with mourners: the bodies were then taken to Cardington village for burial in a common grave in the cemetery of St Mary's church. A monument was later erected, and the scorched Royal Air Force Ensign which R101 had flown on its tail is on display, along with a memorial tablet, in the church's nave. On 27 November 2014, 84 years after the disaster, Baroness Smith of Basildon, together with members of the Airship Heritage Trust, unveiled a memorial plaque to the R101 in St Stephens Hall in the Palace of Westminster. The original zinc plates were used in the printing of this monograph, on authentically inferior paper which has subsequently toned, as is usual in this work. Tous les volumes comportent, de la main de Hélène Pichon, épouse d'Edouard Pichon et fille de Pierre Janet, d'innombrables corrections typographiques à la mine de plomb, ainsi que le nom en clair de chacun des auteurs des exemples oraux (voir plus bas) et sont complets des feuillets d'errata. On joint à cet exemplaire une importante documentation, pour partie inédite : A) Un ensemble de documents permettant d'identifier très précisément les auteurs des exemples oraux (dits "témoins"), dont les noms sont cryptés dans l'ouvrage. Outre les exemples littéraires ou tirés de la presse, les auteurs ont en effet scrupuleusement noté les phrases que prononçaient les personnes de leur entourage (familial, professionnel, relationnel, etc.), corpus soigneusement anonymisé grâce à un simple code alphabétique pour la publication. Il est amusant de noter que les deux hommes utilisaient ces cryptogrammes quand il faisaient référence à certaines de leurs connaissances dans leur correspondance privée. L'outil (largeent inédit) qui nous est proposé est d'autant plus intéressant que gravitaient dans l'entourage des deux hommes (surtout semble-t-il dans celui de Pichon) un nombre important de personnes du monde des sciences (particulièrement celles de l'esprit) et des lettres, dont le nom nous est toujours familier aujourd'hui, et que l'on peut retrouver grâce à ces "clés" : citons par exemple Louis Aragon (qui fut l'étudiant de Pichon au début des années 20 et que Pichon continua de fréquenter par la suite) ou Charles Maurras (le "maître" de Pichon) du côté des lettres, ou Jacques Lacan (on trouve même trace du père de Lacan, Alfred), René Laforgue, Parcheminey, Marie Bonaparte, et tant d'autres jusqu'à Françoise Dolto, alors Françoise Marette (autre étudiante de Pichon), du côté des sciences de l'esprit. Il est souvent très amusant de chercher les phrases (orales donc, et coupées de tout contexte) de ces personnalités et de voir les "pathologies grammaticales" que celles-ci illustrent, tant le vocabulaire même de l'Essai de Grammaire est complexe. Nous disposons là, à notre sens, d'un outil oulipien (par anticipation, et posthume) particulièrement original. Cette digression temporairement close, voici donc la description des outils proposés : 1) [de la main de Jacques Damourette] : "index-clef des exemples oraux et épistolaires", 33 1/3 pp. in-8 dans un cahier d'écolier (accidents), comportant au total environ 800 noms notés A (...)       Boston: Suffolk Engraving Company, 1930. Photogravure after Edward Curtis, printed by the Suffolk Engraving Company, wove paper (watermarked 'Van Gelder Zonen Made in Holland'). Very good condition apart from some slight discolouration of the paper along the extreme edge of the top right margin. A breath-taking image from "The North American Indian", the grandest illustrated work ever produced in the United States, the most important illustrated work on Native Americans, and the single greatest book in Western Americana. Only the double-elephant folio edition of Audubon's "Birds of America" surpasses Curtis in its massive ambition and beauty of execution. "...Because of the singular combination of qualities with which he has been blessed, and because of his extraordinary success in making and using his opportunities... (Curtis) has been able to do what no other man has ever done; what, as far as we can see, no other man could do. He is an artist who works out of doors and not in a closet. He is a close observer, whose qualities of mind and body fit him to make his observations out in the field, surrounded by the wild life he commemorates. He has lived on intimate terms with many different tribes of the mountains and the plains. He knows them as they hunt, as they travel, as they go about their various avocations on the march and in camp. He knows their medicine men and their sorcerers, their chiefs and warriors, their young men and maidens. He has not only seen their vigorous outward existence, but has caught glimpses, such as few white men ever catch, into that strange spiritual and mental life of theirs; from whose inner most recesses all white men are forever barred...." The abundant tules along its shallows formerly supplied the natives with material for house coverings, mats, garments, and balsas, and sheltered teeming flocks of waterfowl" (Curtis, Frontispiece to Volume XIV). Renowned for their unrivalled basketry skills, the Pomo tribe inhabited Northern California. Edward Curtis was fascinated by the story of the Native Americans from childhood. His in-depth knowledge of the various tribes increased in parallel with his skill as a photographer during his participation in a number of scientific expeditions in the 1890s. In 1896, Curtis began to take photographs of the Native American tribes (by 1930 he had taken over 40,000 negatives of eighty tribes) and evolve his hugely ambitious plan for a comprehensive work which would illustrate his romantic vision of Native American life before the disastrous impact of European contact. With the enthusiastic support of President Theodore Roosevelt (who wrote the foreword to the present work) and the financial backing of J. Pierpont Morgan (Curtis was introduced to him by Roosevelt), the publishing project finally got under way in 1906. Pierpont Morgan died in 1913 just before the completion of the ninth volume, but his son agreed to continue underwriting the project; between them, they eventually contributed about a third of the $1,500,000 cost. What had originally been projected to take five or six years eventually stretched to twenty-three, finally reaching a conclusion in 1930 but leaving Curtis a broken and bankrupt man. An evocative image from "The North American Indian", the grandest illustrated work ever produced in the United States, the most important illustrated work on Native Americans, and the single greatest book in Western Americana. Only the double-elephant folio edition of Audubon's "Birds of America" surpasses Curtis in its massive ambition and beauty of execution. (Curtis) Edward Curtis was fascinated by the story of the Native Americans from childhood. His in-depth knowledge of the various tribes increased in parallel with his skill as a photographer during his participation in a number of scientific expeditions in the 1890s. In 1896, Curtis began to take photographs of the Native American tribes (by 1930 he had taken over 40,000 negatives of eighty tribes) and evolve his hugely ambitious plan for a comprehensive work which would illustrate his romantic vision of Native American life before the disastrous impact of European contact. With the enthusiastic support of President Theodore Roosevelt (who wrote the foreword to the present work) and the financial backing of J. Pierpont Morgan (Curtis was introduced to him by Roosevelt), the publishing project finally got under way in 1906. Pierpont Morgan died in 1913 just before the completion of the ninth volume, but his son agreed to continue underwriting the project; between them, they eventually contributed about a third of the $1,500,000 cost. What had originally been projected to take five or six years eventually stretched to twenty-three, finally reaching a conclusion in 1930 but leaving Curtis a broken and bankrupt man.       Salem, Germany: The Salem School, 1930. First Edition. First Edition. Publisher's half vellum with decorative gold string over textured handmade paper. An album produced in a small limited edition, targeting American supporters for the purpose of raising funds for the then-new school. Though today the school is one of the most elite in all of Europe, and with several locations, it had virtually no funding at the time of this volume's publication. Kurt Hahn and Karl Reinhardt founded the Schule Schloss Salem (or Salem School) in 1920 with the support of Prince Maximilian of Baden, introducing an "education reform" which encouraged progressive methods, developing the unique talents of each student. The focus was not on academic performance but on the development of character. Hahn was a key figure in the development of progressive and experiential education, strongly influencing many modern-day alternative educational institutions. He also founded the Atlantic College, Outward Bound, the United World College, and other major worldwide institutions. Included are sections on "The Seven Laws of Salem," "Salem Certificate of Maturity," and "Reproduction of Kurt Hahn's Film Lecture." The "film lecture" includes 49 original mounted black and white photographs in various sizes showing Prince Max von Baden, the faculty, the students, and many shots of the school. Some of the images depict students engaged in activities such as field hockey, skiing, jogging, dancing, archery, or performing a play. Others show students at work and in the classroom. A rare volume. The text for this example is in English, and though there was presumably a German-language version produced as well, we have never encountered another copy. Minor soil and some sunning and minor foxing to the boards, slight rubbing to the spine. Some rippling to the leaves around some photographs due to aging of the glue, photographs not affected. Edges of a few photographs slightly oxidized. In Very Good plus condition overall.

The proofs are numbered 1 of 12 and signed, titled and dated in pencil by the artist. Published in the year of D.H. Lawrence's death this is a fitting tribute with some superb large wood engravings by Hughes-Stanton.

"In 1930, Keynes brought out his heavy, two-volume Treatise on Money, which effectively set out his Wicksellian theory of the credit cycle. Presentation copy to his South African friend Sir Abraham ("Abe") Bailey, inscribed by the author on the blank preceding the half-title, "To Abe from Winston. Oct 15. 1930". A superb association: Churchill first met Abe Bailey (1864?-1940) during the Second Boer War, the events of which feature memorably as the climax to this book. Bailey, who divided his time between South Africa and London, remained a lifelong friend of Churchill's, acting as his financial adviser and quiet political promoter. The meeting of 3 December 1916 which led to Lloyd George succeeding Herbert Asquith as prime minister was held in Bailey's London home, and Bailey urged Lloyd George to have Churchill in his new government. A man of considerable wealth and influence, Bailey continued to meet and correspond with Churchill throughout his life. Churchill's daughter Diana married Bailey's eldest son, John, in 1932; although the union proved short lived, this did not alter their friendship. Churchill does not mention Bailey by name in the book, but short pencil strokes in the margins suggest that Bailey read the book with attention, particularly the later chapters dealing with South Africa.

        Labels (Inscription By D.B.Wyndham Lewis)

      A First UK printing published by Duckworth in 1930. 8vo dark blue cloth boards with silver stamped title and author name on the spine, 206pp with seven illustrations and a pictorial dust jacket. The book is a detached commentary on Waugh?s brief honeymoon with his wife, also called Evelyn during 1929.The BOOK is in VERY GOOD condition with the boards being clean with some sunning to the spine and very light bumping to the corners and spine tips. Internally there is an inscription on the front free endpaper which reads: 'To Ronnie and Mary, with love,from Wyndham, Christmas 1930'.The edge of the text block has some foxing spots and there is some scattered foxing throughout the text in places.The distinctive original cream WRAPPER is unclipped and is in VERY GOOD condition.It shows the original price of 8/6 NET and is now protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. There are spots of foxing particularly on the verso of the jacket and on the rear flap.The spine is age toned and the fore edges discoloured.There is a 60mm split in the middle of the rear shoulder of the spine and a 40mm tear at the bottom of the front shoulder. There is also a 2cm tear across the middle of the spine. The top and bottom edges are chipped with a little loss to the fore edge corners and spine tips.There is also a 7mm x 15mm section missing on the bottom front right-hand corner.There are also a number of small tears of 2-5mm top and bottom and two larger 2-3 cm tears top and bottom.The wrapper has the VERY RARE ?Recommended by the Book Society? Sticker applied to the front panel. This was used instead of the usual wrap-around band in order to blend in with the distinctive design of the wrapper?s front cover.The inscription is an intriguing one.It is possible that the book was given as a Christmas gift by the author D B Wyndham Lewis.We have however been unable to identify the recipients of the inscription.Despite the faults described, this copy presents well.

      Monks House, Rodmell. June 8th [nd. but pencil notation indicates c. 1930].. Two pages, on recto and verso of quarto (26.5 x 21 cm.) sheet, previously folded into quarters for mailing. Small break at centerfold and closed tear mid-way down right side of obverse, two small tabs of linen mounting tape adhered to edges in upper quadrants, recto quite sun-faded, darkened ande a bit discolored along folds, pencil hand corrections to reversed letters or omitted words; an ill-kept but intact and remarkable letter. An intimate, newsy, and highly amusing family letter from Aunt Virginia to her nephew, "My dear Quentin," that starts with a bang, "I was just sitting down to strike the keys when fate plunged me into utter disorder. The kidneys. The cook. Yes Nelly [Nellie Boxall] had an operation. I drove through London in an ambulance, half the glass is black so that you see life [inserted] passing like a sepulchral procession. Then I saw doctors and sisters of mercy; and brothers and Aunts. Enough. I cant write when I must be [cross outs and insertion] planning dinner. How any woman with a family ever put pen to paper I cannot fathom. Always the bell rings and the baker calls." Woolf relates how her sister Vanessa Bell, "Nessa," produced a old French lady of dubious health and skills to replace the cook, and the incident of a non sequitor argument that results in lost keys to the [Gordon Square] flat. She informs Quentin that "We are now at Rodmell for Whitsun, and the Austrians are gliding over our heads like gulls. Yes, this is a fact. They have tents on the downs and prove that one can fly up and down Asheham Hill without an engine. As I never doubted it myself, I take little stock of it." This is in reference to very enthusiastic Sussex gliding, or sail plane, club ?- gliding being all the rage in the 1930s, it was being practiced all over the UK by various clubs whose members numbered in the hundreds and enjoyed a membership that included both men and women. After a bit of village business, she relates the news of the family cocker spaniel, a gift of Vita Sackville-West, "Pinka has five black pups ?- the sixth she sat on, conveniently, for to tell the truth five black bitches in my room are enough." More family news, "Julian [Bell, Quentin?'s older brother] is coming to Charleston with a troupe next week. And they shot the senior tutor of Kings last week ?- Mr Potts did, as Lydia [Keynes] says must happen, when young men have no morals and wear coloured socks." The "senior tutor?" was Alexander Wollaston, the naturalist, ethnologist, and explorer of tropical mountain regions. He was elected a Fellow of Kings College in 1920, and on 3 June 1930 was shot dead in his college rooms by a demented undergraduate named Potts, who killed himself immediately afterwards. VW fills Quentin in on the further doings of the Keyneses, Roger Fry and his Aunt Vanessa with regard to a troublesome art show, from which Fry has resigned, and looks forward to each friend bringing her up to speed on the outcome, "How I adore my friends to do that ?- and then they come over and confide in us; what fun it will be; Nessa thinks they will not dare draw water from the well. She thinks their friendship is what she calls a cruche cassée." She tells Quentin that Vita Sackville-West's book is selling so well "that Leonard and I are hauling in money like pilchards from a net. We sell about 800 every day. The Edwardians it is called." Woolf asks her nephew if he is at his family's French retreat in Cassis, "Basking, I suppose, and sipping vermouth at M. Somebodies, while the waves dont break, and the sardine boats come in at midnight," and asks for a letter from him describing his "life from the inside." In closing, she laments she hasn't actually said what she wanted to say, and that the "snap- snap of the typewriter frightens me as the snap of a turtle frightens fish. So good bye. From the collection (book-label to each front paste-down) of Charlotte "Carlo" Fisher (1895-1976). Charlotte Fisher, initially hired to serve as nanny to Christie's daughter Rosalind, was pressed into service as a part-time shorthand secretary during the earliest days of the author's career. To quote from Christie's autobiography, Charlotte Fisher was "friend and secretary and governess and dogsbody and everything else for many years. [She] is still one of my best friends." The six "Mary Westmacott" novels (of which we offer five) were those which Agatha Christie wrote to explore feelings that had no place in her mystery tales. Quoting Christie's daughter Rosalind at the time of her mother's centenary in 1947: "The Mary Westmacott novels have been described as romantic novels but I don't think that is really a fair assessment. They are not 'love stories' in the general sense of the term, and they certainly have no happy endings. They are, I believe, about love in some of its most powerful and destructive forms." Agatha Christie wasn't in the habit of inscribing her non-mystery novels; until Carlo Fisher's copies were discovered, contemporary presentation copies were unknown and we can find no auction records for any other contemporaneously signed or inscribed Mary Westmacott books. Here we have five "Carlo Fisher" copies, all with her book-label and four of which are either signed or inscribed. A unique opportunity for the Christie collector to say the least.         Fish Shows - Apsaroke

      Boston: Suffolk Engraving Company, 1930. Photogravure after Edward Curtis, printed by the Suffolk Engraving Company, Japon paper. Very good condition. A breath-taking image from "The North American Indian", the grandest illustrated work ever produced in the United States, the most important illustrated work on Native Americans, and the single greatest book in Western Americana. Only the double-elephant folio edition of Audubon's "Birds of America" surpasses Curtis in its massive ambition and beauty of execution. "...Because of the singular combination of qualities with which he has been blessed, and because of his extraordinary success in making and using his opportunities... (Curtis) has been able to do what no other man has ever done; what, as far as we can see, no other man could do. He is an artist who works out of doors and not in a closet. He is a close observer, whose qualities of mind and body fit him to make his observations out in the field, surrounded by the wild life he commemorates. He has lived on intimate terms with many different tribes of the mountains and the plains. He knows them as they hunt, as they travel, as they go about their various avocations on the march and in camp. He knows their medicine men and their sorcerers, their chiefs and warriors, their young men and maidens. He has not only seen their vigorous outward existence, but has caught glimpses, such as few white men ever catch, into that strange spiritual and mental life of theirs; from whose inner most recesses all white men are forever barred...." (Theodore Roosevelt, Foreword to Volume 1) Born around 1848, Fish Shows or 'Buusish' was a gallant Apsaroke warrior, who first fought under the renowned chief Red Bear against the Sioux. According to Curtis, in "stature and in vigor the Apsaroke, or Crows, excelled all other tribes of the Rocky Mountain region, and were surpassed by none in bravery and in devotion to the supernatural forces that gave them strength against their enemies." (Volume IV) Originally planters from the upper Midwest, they inhabited the Plains and Prairies region of the United States, where they became hunters and skilled horsemen. Edward Curtis was fascinated by the story of the Native Americans from childhood. His in-depth knowledge of the various tribes increased in parallel with his skill as a photographer during his participation in a number of scientific expeditions in the 1890s. In 1896, Curtis began to take photographs of the Native American tribes (by 1930 he had taken over 40,000 negatives of eighty tribes) and evolve his hugely ambitious plan for a comprehensive work which would illustrate his romantic vision of Native American life before the disastrous impact of European contact. With the enthusiastic support of President Theodore Roosevelt (who wrote the foreword to the present work) and the financial backing of J. Pierpont Morgan (Curtis was introduced to him by Roosevelt), the publishing project finally got under way in 1906. Pierpont Morgan died in 1913 just before the completion of the ninth volume, but his son agreed to continue underwriting the project; between them, they eventually contributed about a third of the $1,500,000 cost. What had originally been projected to take five or six years eventually stretched to twenty-three, finally reaching a conclusion in 1930 but leaving Curtis a broken and bankrupt man.         Aquatint, "Bread Line"

      ca 1930-35. A spectacular large print demonstrating Groth's early mastery of aquatint technique -- a Bowery street scene peopled with the ghost-like figures of Depression-era down-and-outers, typical of Groth's social-realist work during the Great Depression. Though best remembered as a wartime sketch-artist and book illustrator (he produced a number of titles for The Limited Editions Club, including the widely-praised LEC edition of Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front ), Groth began his career as a printmaker and cartoonist very much in the social-realist mold, publishing some of his earliest work in such left-wing forums as The New Masses and PM. He was also the first Art Director at Esquire, which was founded in 1933. Groth's mastery as a printmaker is on display in these early works, which manage to convey a simultaneous sense of urgency and delicacy which would become the hallmark of his battlefield sketches made during WW2 and the Korean War. Groth's Depression-era work has remained scarce in the marketplace, with only a few examples of his social-realist prints at auction in the past twenty years. The current example is from Groth's personal archive, which we acquired in 2013. Original aquatint. Sheet size 49.5cm x 67.5cm (ca 19-3/4" x 26-1/2"); image area 45cm x 61cm. Signed and numbered (1/50) in pencil, lower right, titled lower left. Slight soil to verso and to margins; a strong, clear and clean impression.
