. ." - 2. Auflage in guter Erhaltung - Nationalsozialismus, NS.-Aufklärungschrift, Kampfschrift aus der Weimarer Republik, Judenfeindschaft, Judengegnerschaft, Antisemitismus, scharfer judenfeindlicher Standpunkt, antisemitische Karikatur, NS.-Schrifttum aus der Kampfzeit, illustrierte Bücher, völkisches / nationalsozialistisches Gedankengut Sprache: Deutsch [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Hell's Angels (Collection of 16 original photographs from the 1930 film)

Los Angeles, CA: United Artists, 1930. Collection of 16 vintage single weight sepia reference photographs from the US release of the 1930 film. Six of the photographs have a red studio stamp on the verso, each identifying the actors in the shot, and the fact that it is a Howard Hughes production, and one has a typed snipe on the verso. Six of the photos feature purely aerial biplane action, four depict military action on the ground, three feature Jean Harlow, and the remaining four photos depict various male leads. More than half of the reference shots included here come from the aerial battle sequences, actually shot from planes often flying in a dizzying, disorieting multi-directional fashion. Howard Hughes' most expensive and ambitious production, a story about World War I combat pilots, today still a dazzling work of blockbuster action and actual aerial biplane footage. Originally conceived as a silent film and then retooled as a talkie in the wake of "The Jazz Singer." Most of the film is shot in black and white, but one sequence is in color--the only color footage ever released of actress Jean Harlow before her untimely death. James Whale was hired by Hughes to direct the talking sequences, Whale's first major effort in Hollywood, but the overall production took so long, that Whale's subsequent directorial effort, "Journey's End," was released first. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus to Near Fine overall. Complete collation details available on request.

Livres

Photo Album]: 1930's Ranch Life in the Black Hills of South Dakota

Black Hills, South Dakota 1930 - Thick oblong small octavo. String-tied black card wrappers with printed illustration and with "Photographs Souvenir of The Black Hills" printed in gold on the top board. Chipping on the boards, and with chips at the extremities of the blank black pages, good only; the images are very good or better, a few with small nicks or wear. The large majority are captioned in ink, usually in the top margin of the image. 142 mostly glossy black and white gelatin silver photographs, most measuring about 2.75" x 4.5". The album documents life at "The Gumbo Ranch" owned by Victor Carroll, which was located near Bear Butte, South Dakota, as well as some surrounding scenes in Wyoming, and a few in Nebraska and Chicago. Most of the photos are of a working ranch and nearby towns, with many of surrounding towns, Sturgis, Paxton, Leads, Savoy, Deadwood, and other Black Hills and Badlands locations. The photographs tell a lively story that include many taken on the ranch (buildings, many of working ranch hands and cowboys, livestock, equipment, threshing, road building, etc.), interesting images of a cyclone or tornado, the Deadwood Rodeo, a gold mine at Leads, a grasshopper swarm and its resulting devastation, scenery (Devil's Tower, The Needles, Bear Butte, Mt. Rushmore under construction, buffalo herds), nearby facilities (Hotel at Lake Adams, the Tea Room at Mt. Coolidge, the Post Office in Savoy, St. Wenceslaus Church in Tabor, etc.), and more. Despite the touristic nature of the album cover, this seems less touristic than it is the documentation of an actual working ranch. A nice album. While tourist albums of the Black Hills area turn up, albums of daily life in the area are much less common. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Autograph musical quotation signed in full

No compositions by the French violinist Thibaud are recorded. "At 13 his precocious talent took him to the Paris Conservatoire... He formed a trio with his brothers, a pianist and a cellist of ability, but it was as the partner of Cortot and Casals in a famous trio, chiefly active from 1930 to 1935, that he is remembered as an ensemble player... Thibaud never retired; he appeared in London when he was over 70 and gave his last concert at Biarritz ten days before he was killed in an air crash on his way to a concert tour in the East Asia." W.W. Cobbett and Noël Goodwin in Grove Music Online.. Octavo (204 x 138 mm.) 1 measure from an unidentified technical study, being an 8-note staccato pattern in C major, repeated in C-sharp major, both under one downbow, marked "Presto." On an album leaf. Signed and dated "Liège 30 Mai 1921" in black ink.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Autograph Letter, Signed, to Black [with] The Story of My Life, 1st.

1930. Darrow Discusses Prohibition with a Colleague Darrow, Clarence [1857-1938]. [Black, Forrest R]. [Autograph Letter, Signed, To Black, On the Letterhead of the Hotel Fenway, Denedin, Florida, February 26]. Single 10-1/2" x 7-1/4" sheet. Some toning, two horizontal fold lines, light soiling to upper right hand corner, otherwise fine. [With] Darrow, Clarence [1857-1938]. The Story of My Life. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1932. xiv, 465 pp. Fourteen plates (with 16 illustrations). First edition, first issue (Scribner "A"). Cloth in moderately worn and lightly soiled multi-color Art Deco dust jacket, light toning to text. Darrow's letter from February 26 was probably written in 1930 or 1931, the period in which the two exchanged a number of letters about the manuscript of Black's book. Darrow appears to be discussing a passage in the manuscript: "I am convinced that both propositions you are examining would stand the test of law, assuming they ever reached the courts. Of course you and I both know that it would be easier to win on them now than it would have been a few years ago. I can really imagine no argument against it. The only thing that could be said is that it is an effort to do something indirectly that can't be done directly, but that is not a valid objection. It seems to me that essentially every point has been pressed upon." The letter is accompanied by a first edition, first issue, of Darrow's autobiography.         Taos Pueblo

Grabhorn Press, San Francisco 1930 - (17 x 12 1/2 inches). [6] preliminary pages followed by [14]pp. of text. 12 original mounted photographs, printed on Dessonville paper by Ansel Adams, various sizes to 9 x 6 1/2 inches, each with a corresponding caption leaf. Publisher's tan morocco backed orange cloth, spine with raised bands in six compartments, marbled endpapers (minor fading to the leather) From an edition of 108 numbered copies signed by the author and the photographer, containing magnificent photographs by Ansel Adams. Possibly the most famous of modern photographic works on the West, Taos Pueblo was a collaboration between the young photographer, Ansel Adams, and one of the most evocative writers on the Southwest, Mary Austin. An elegant design by the Grabhorn Press provides a counterpoint to Adams' photographs of the adobe Pueblo. The book distilled the romance and naturalism that many Americans found in the Indian pueblos of New Mexico, and defined the style that was to make Adams the most popular of photographers of the American West. "It was at Taos and Santa Fe that Ansel Adams first saw the Southwest. The time was the spring of 1927. His visit resulted in a Grabhorn Press book now of legendary rarity. It includes Ansel Adams' photographs and Mary Austin's essay on Taos Pueblo. Genius has never been more happily wed. Nowhere else did she write prose of such precise and poetical authority . Their Taos Pueblo is a true and beautiful book by two consummate artists" ( Ansel Adams: Photographs of the Southwest, 1970, p. xxv). Produced in a small edition, the book is difficult to obtain today. This example is signed by both Austin and Adams and is in beautiful condition. One of the greatest books produced by the Grabhorn Press and featuring beautiful photographs by Ansel Adams, it is a landmark of American photographic depiction of the Southwest.         TOMB OF TUT ANKH AMEN, Discovered by the Late Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter

London: Cassell and Co, 1930, 1927, 1933. 3 volumes. First editions, volume one being fourth impression of the first edition. In the rare illustrated dustjackets. With over 400 illustrations from photographs. 8vo, publisher’s original mustard cloth lettered and handsomely decorated in gilt and black with scarab design on the upper covers, spines lettered in gilt. xxiii, 223, index; xxxiv, 269, index; 243, index. A very fine and bright set, the rare dustjackets showing some edge-wear, occasional tears and some evidence of tape repair, yet still intact and mostly complete. VERY SCARCE FIRST EDITIONS IN THE ORIGINAL DUSTJACKETS. The story of what must be the most famous archaeological excavation of all time, with the possible exception of Schliemann's discovery of Troy. Carter writes that the feeling of awe was overwhelming when, after clearing the stairway and steep descending passage, he entered the Antechamber to the tomb, where he beheld in the hypogeum for the first time the splendor of Imperial Egypt dated fourteen centuries before Christ. The sight was so gorgeous, so sumptuous in its splendour as to be bewildering, almost overwhelming. And the extent of the discovery took he and his companions by utter surprise both in its totality and in the fact that it was utterly intact. It has remained so to this day. Both awe inspiring and bewildering whenever the treasures are beheld, they are only the fruits plucked from one of the most extraordinary and exciting archeological adventures ever made. The story of the trevails and successes of the expedition and its members remains even today as one of the great books of modern history. Complete first edition sets in dustjackets are very scarce indeed.
