Dublin: The Cuala Press, 1930 - Octavo. Original Holland boards. With the unprinted dust jacket. A fine copy, with the dust jacket very good though chipped at the ends and corners, and a little creased and marked. First edition thus, limited issue, presentation copy, inscribed by the author "with homage to Katherine Tynan from Oliver Gogarty, Dublin 24:iv:1930" on the front free endpaper, in the very scarce dust jacket. Katherine Tynan (1859–1931) was a hugely prolific Irish poet, a significant figure in the Irish Renaissance, and a friend of W. B. Yeats. This edition of Wild Apples, which was printed in 250 copies, was preceded by the 1926 private edition of 50 copies which did not include Yeats's preface. It is the second selection by Yeats of the poems of Oliver Gogarty, likened by him in his opening poem, "The Crab Tree", to "a tart crop" of wild apples. This copy also contains the publisher's advertisement card for Wild Apples laid-in. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Kin Ping Meh. [10 Original-Radierungen und Titelblatt].

Eigendruck, ohne Ort und Jahr [um 1930]. - Folio: 35x30 cm. Kin Ping Meh. Portfolio with 10 original etchings by Roderich von Safft and title-page. Privately printed, no place, no date [about 1930]. Folio 2vo (36,5 x 32 cm). Yellow orig. cloth portfolio with a mounted parchment label. The title-page is handwritten in calligraphic style with titles for each etching. Each etching signed by the artist and with the note "Eigendruck" which means etching printed by the artist himself. The etchings combine lyrical delicateness with explicit erotic presentation. The number of printed copies is not mentioned but according to its rareness it couldn't be hardly more than 100 copies. Not mentioned in any bibliography. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

She continues by including programs for events, ticket stubs, and membership cards for her time at Whittier. Also included are assignments such as spelling tests and essays tipped into the pages with grades, all of which show Jessup as a good student. One page shows commercial photos from Gay's Lion Farm where Jessup was taken by her uncle and grandmother as a reward for getting through admission day. She writes that it was "very interesting and we enjoyed it very much." One sections shows the school's dress up days with girls dressed up as musicians, one of which is complete with black face. She continues, "the shipmates and waiters were sure nice to us and we had a wonderful time." Interspersed throughout the album are photos of her classmates, some candids include building a human pyramid and general high school goofing off. There are also small portraits of the seniors in her class pasted next to a card with their names. An interesting and complete look at a California high school girl's education in the late 1920s.

        The Bridge A Poem.

Paris: The Black Sun Press, 1930 - Tall quarto. Original white wrapper, titles to spine and front wrapper in red and black. With the original glassine jacket. Housed in the publisher's silver card slipcase. A superb copy in the somewhat worn tissue and original silver-covered card slipcase that has had the lower panel and a small portion of the top panel renewed. First edition, first impression, one of 200 copies on Holland Paper from a total limited edition of 284 copies. The Bridge was Crane's only attempt at a long poem, inspired by his view of the Brooklyn Bridge from his apartment in Columbia Heights, and includes three plates from photographs of the bridge by his friend Walker Evans. Harold Bloom praised the poem for "its astonishing transformation of the sublime ode into an American epic, uneven certainly but beyond The Waste Land in aspiration and accomplishment" (Complete Poems of Hart Crane, Liveright, 2000). This shimmering first appearance was one of several exquisitely produced books put out by the Black Sun Press, founded by the wild and wealthy expatriate couple Harry and Caresse Crosby. Harry Crosby (1898–1929) was heir to one of Boston's wealthiest banking families, but after serving as an ambulance driver during the First World War he met and fell in love with a married lady, Mary Peabody (née Jacob) – they fled to Paris, married, and she changed her name to Caresse. Harry and Caresse embedded themselves in the avant-garde cultural scene, befriending the likes of Dalí, Hemingway and Cartier-Bresson, founded the Black Sun Press which helped to publish the early works of Joyce, Eliot, Pound and Hart Crane, and lived a life of utter dissolution off Harry's inheritance – which, when it ran out, had to be supplemented by telegrams to his banker father such as the infamous, "PLEASE SELL $10,000 WORTH OF STOCK. WE HAVE DECIDED TO LIVE A MAD AND EXTRAVAGANT LIFE" (to which the father, reluctantly but nonetheless amazingly, assented). Following Crosby's tragic death in 1929 (he was found shot dead in the same bed as Josephine, "The Fire Princess", one of his many lovers), the Black Sun Press continued issuing books in Paris and New York under the directorship of Caresse, who survived until 1970.         A Draft of XXX Cantos.

Paris: Hours Press, 1930 - Octavo. Original buff linen, titles to front board and spine in red, edges untrimmed. With a plain glassine wrapper (spine defective). Faint spotting to untrimmed edges, else a fine copy. Initials and vignette by Dorothy Shakespear. First edition, limited issue, inscribed by the author and signed with his initials on the front free endpaper to "Marcella, EZ". Number 138 of 200 copies on japon (Canson-Mongolfier Soleil velin MRV paper), from an edition of 212 (for details of the whole edition, see previous item). Marcella Spann Booth (b. 1932) was introduced to Pound's poetry at graduate school in her native Texas. While living in New York, she wrote to Pound at St Elizabeth's Hospital and requested to meet him while on a stopover in Washington DC, which began a lengthy correspondence and friendship. They collaborated on a poetry anthology (inevitably "Spannthology"), later published as Confucius to Cummings: An Anthology of Poetry (New Directions, 1964). During her frequent visits to St Elizabeth's Hospital between 1957 and 1958, Spann often shared her students' work with Pound who provided comments and advice for her teaching. After Pound's release from St Elizabeth's Hospital in 1958, Spann accompanied him and his wife, Dorothy, to Italy where she acted as Pound's secretary and continued work on the "Spannthology". Pound and Spann continued to correspond briefly after she returned to Texas in October 1959. Her extensive collection of manuscripts and correspondence with Pound is now in the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, Texas. Gallup A31a. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Published in Paris between April 1929 and January 1931, it ran for 15 issues, each of which contained a wide range of original writing and photographs. It was overseen by the writer-philosopher Georges Bataille, who became more and more its single guiding figure as the issues progressed. Primarily through the pages of this journal, Bataille forcefully challenged the tenets of Surrealism espoused by André Breton in favor of an alternate model, in which humanity could embrace the formless, the sordid, the discarded and disregarded.\" (monoskop) Versand D: 4,00 EUR Kunst, Zeitschriften

        CHARLIE CHAN CARRIES ON.

The Bobbs-Merrill Company, Publishers, [1930]., Indianapolis - First edition. Very good, clean copy in dust jacket with minor rubbing to front flap, pink portions of the spine faded, and with a couple of tiny chips at the extremities. Hugh Morris Drake, an automobile manufacturer from Detroit, is found murdered in his hotel room. Drake had been traveling as a member of a small Round the World travel party. At first, the case seemed quite simple but, before Inspector Duff could discover any convincing evidence, the remainder of the travel party moved on, widening the distance between the murder site and the suspects. An attractive copy of the final Charlie Chan adventure. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
