        N BY E.

New York: Brewer & Warren, 1930. 281 pages. Designed and illustrated by Kent. Beige pictorial cloth; with chipped dust jacket. First edition. With a Kent bookplate signed by Merle Armitage and a dedication of this book to Claire Troth, by Armitage. Laid in is a fine typed letter by Kent to Armitage dated March, 1925, discussing his artwork. "I have had a couple of letters from Mr. Harrison. While I would like very much to sell him a picture for the Museum [Los Angles Museum of Art], I cannot possibly meet his terms. I would consider it very unfair to those steady patrons of mine who are accustomed to pay more. I offered him a discount of 33 2/3%; that considering that I do get for my pictures the price that I ask seems to be generous enough.

        L'Odyssee [THEO SCHMIED'S PERSONAL COPY]

La Compagnie des Bibliophiles de l'Automobile-Club de France, Paris 1930 - Theo Schmied's personal copy of volume one (of four) of his father's most ambitious book illustration project, Homer's Odyssey. The printing and illustrations were done entirely on vellum, leading to enormous production costs. Their goal of printing 125 sets proved to be too costly and had to be abandoned. It is estimated that about 73 copies of the 4 volume set were actually completed, along with a few copies printed for the collaborators on the project, including our copy here which is copy 'c' and was given to Theo Schmied (1900-1985), Francois' son as well as the wood-engraver for this project. It is recorded that 3,000 goats from the High Atlas mountains of Morocco were used in the production of the vellum for this edition. Schmied went on a voyage to Greece and the Near East for the sole purpose of studying the atmospheric light of the region so that you could accurately reproduce it in this work. A stunning achievement. 23 pochoir plates (17 full-page), with highlights in silver and gold. 4to (28.7 x 23.7 cm), lvii, 115pp., 2pp. A few wrinkles to a few leaves. Loose as issued in limp vellum wrapper, gilt lettered, stiff vellum chemise, vellum slipcase (upper joint of wrapper splitting, foxing to cover.). [Monod 6075]

Barbara Cartland is the 3rd best selling author of all time (1 billion books), trailing only William Shakespeare and Agatha Christie. Our 4 books are all frustratingly scarce 1st editions, even without their dustjackets, just try and get any one of them. And it is only pretentious and crusty, subject scorning, literary snobbery (romance novels are trash), that prevents them from being 10 times as expensive as they are here, and your odds of finding another inscribed set (chasing the horizon), are lower than the chicken vote for Colonel Sanders, though I suppose you could try saying "Beatlejuice" 3 times, and see if that leads to anything.

eigentl.

A Collection of 43 SpaldingÕs Football Rule Books

New York: American Sports Publishing, 1903-1930 - Some are in wrappers; some bound either with or without wrappers; many with notes, mostly pencil, and various enclosures, printed and holograph. These were the property of player and coach (mostly at the University of Chicago) Amos Alonzo Stagg, and his name is embossed on many covers, and while we are unfamiliar with his writing, presumably many, if not most or all, of the notes are in his hand. This is an extensive collection, but evidently not complete with every rule book from every year, and there are some duplicates. The condition varies as to be expected in publications intended for the playing field; generally very good. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Parabaik Burmese Myanmar Tattoo Book

      - CONDITION: Very Good; no marks, or tears; the black lacquer is a bit dulled. I have not attempted to clean it. There is a 1x1.5" chip in the black on one back corner and a small bump and crack on a front corner tip. The bird has a dull scratch near its head. The pages are Fine, bright, unwrinkled, and extremely clean; the folds are not rubbed or torn at all and the corners are sharp. There is no indication of when this book was published. Because the tattoo designs use four colours of varying shades, it is not an early 19th c book, The lacquer work suggests that it is older, probably before the suppression of tattoos by the British in the 1930's, so say 1890 to 1928, perhaps produced for the tourist trade and certainly barely used. BINDING: Concertina fold, leporello, book, 10.2 x 16.5 cm, 4.1 x 6.5" , with 18 + 16 "pages", pasted to decorated black lacquered wooden boards. (Unfolded, one side shows 16 double sided pages plus two "endpapers" pasted to wooden boards, making 18, the other shows 16 pages and the two boards) . The images are carefully hand coloured in several shades of green, yellow, and purple, and the edges of the rough mulberry? paper are stained in black. The boards have fine incised work in red, grey blue, and golden yellow, with lines and colours placed close together (for example, each gold "brushstroke" in our jpg is actually six fine lines). One board shows a woman in a courtyard among buildings with others looking out the windows, all very linear; the other board has elaborate curved coloured lines with a fantastic bird in the center cartouche. Parabaiks like these were produced as sample tattoo books. From the British museum, manuscript similar to ours: "The manuscript is a digest of tattoo designs for a potential client to choose from, and would have been used by the tattooer to advertise his range of work." The traditional tattoos had religious or magical powers and both protected the wearer and gave him strength. This book has 27 different tattoos, black outlined coloured drawings surrounded by text, some on double spreads and some single pages: elephants brandishing swords, goddesses riding tigers, magical birds, and creatures bearing magic squares and circles, fish, chicken headed snakes, and circles of lizards and many animals with human or goddess heads.         Wild Apples. With a Preface by William Butler Yeats.

Dublin: The Cuala Press, 1930 - Octavo. Original Holland boards. With the unprinted dust jacket. A fine copy, with the dust jacket very good though chipped at the ends and corners, and a little creased and marked. First edition thus, limited issue, presentation copy, inscribed by the author "with homage to Katherine Tynan from Oliver Gogarty, Dublin 24:iv:1930" on the front free endpaper, in the very scarce dust jacket. Katherine Tynan (1859–1931) was a hugely prolific Irish poet, a significant figure in the Irish Renaissance, and a friend of W. B. Yeats. This edition of Wild Apples, which was printed in 250 copies, was preceded by the 1926 private edition of 50 copies which did not include Yeats's preface. It is the second selection by Yeats of the poems of Oliver Gogarty, likened by him in his opening poem, "The Crab Tree", to "a tart crop" of wild apples. This copy also contains the publisher's advertisement card for Wild Apples laid-in. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
