        The Maltese Falcon

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1930. First edition. Very Good +. A Very Good + copy with a previous owner's name on the front end paper and minor soiling to the boards. Despite the defects a very presentable copy of Hammett's masterpiece. Hammett's classic hard-boiled detective tale, which would go on to influence countless others in the genre. The story features the first appearance of Sam Spade - a character Hammett referred to as a man with "no original" - and was initially serialized in the classic pulp magazine Black Mask before it was published in book form. Hammett was inspired by his own work as a detective, which is thought have contributed to Hammett's lauded realism. Famed mystery author, Raymond Chandler, said of the work: "If you can show me 20 books written approximately 20 years back that have as much guts and life now, I'll eat them between slices of Edmund Wilson's head." The Maltese Falcon also inspired numerous films, including the 1941 noir classic of the same name, (which Variety called "one of the best examples of actionful and suspenseful melodramatic story telling in cinematic form") written and directed by John Huston and starring Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, and Sydney Greenstreet. The film would be nominated for three Academy Awards - including Best Picture - and was chosen for preservation by the Library of Congress' National Film Registry. The novel appears on Modern Library's list of the 100 best English Language Novels of the 20th century. Very Good +.

The Director's Photograph Album for Ward Manor, the Old Folks Home and Youth Camp of New York City's Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor

Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, 1930. Photograph Album. Very Good. Photography likely by Alfred Tennyson Beales. This large photograph album (13" x 15") contains 40 pages with over 80 photographs ranging in size from approximately 3" x 5" to 8" x 10". Almost all of the photographs have typed captions, many long and detailed. A large map and a two-page essay are mounted on three of the pages. Some of the pages have a little light edge-wear, but the photographs are in nice shape; several pages have vacant spaces where a few photographs have been removed. The album shows some wear and the joint of the front cover has been repaired with black cloth tape. The album cover has been stamped in gilt, "Ward Manor / On the Hudson / Ollie A. Randall." Ward Manor was the Old Folk's Home and Youth Camp for the New York City's Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor (AICP). In 1926, William Boyd, the owner of a baking company, purchased a large grey stone building and the surrounding land near Annandale-on-Hudson and donated it to the ACIP, which in turn used it create "a welcoming place for poor people to spend the last years of their lives." Eventually the ACIP bought surrounding properties and not only expanded the number of elderly rooms, but also created a summer vacation resort for semi-employed adults and a summer camp for impoverished children. Ollie A. Randall was the director of Ward Manor from 1926 until 1945, and this is her personal photograph album. Images include photos of the buildings, the grounds, the residents engaged in activities (gardening, hiking, knitting, rug making, etc.), common and personal rooms, resort activities (tennis, shuffleboard, horseshoe pitching, croquet), and camp scenes (campers, lodging, swiming, interacting with animals, ping-pong, arts and crafts, outdoor games, plays and performances, hayride, farming, a children's circus, etc. Ward Manor was transferred to Bard College in 1963 and today, the grey stone building serves as a domitory and student center. This is a unique photographic record of an important innovative and pioneering urban social program.

4 TYPED LETTERS, INCLUDING 3 SIGNED, by the Modernist poet WALLACE GOULD admired by William Carlos Williams & Marsden Hartley.

Circa, [1930]. [1930] - - Four letters by the poet Wallace Gould addressed to John Hyde Preston, author of "Mad Anthony Wayne" and "Revolution 1776" and associated with "Direction" Magazine. Three of the letters are signed by Gould, the other unsigned but with a manuscript correction in the poet's hand. All four letters are typed on 14 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide buff paper. Each, directly or indirectly mentions his book "Aphrodite" which he would like to correct and revise by hand. In what appears to be the first letter, with over 400 words densely typed on one page, Gould writes to Preston: "I have intended to write you. I shall ask you if you possess a volume of Aphrodite. If so, would you find it interesting to possess in exchange for it another, with subsequent corrections and revisions? I have a great desire to place such a volume in your possession frankly with the ulterior motive of its being thus preserved for posterity. Like so many other publishing houses, the Macaulay house is primarily interested in socialism and negrophilism and memoirs of famous bad women, including Peggy Joyce, but not Aphrodite, and has taken up the publication of poetry only as a new broom to sweep out Eleanor Glynn." Far from wealthy, Gould inquires whether a play to be performed at the University is free: "And do I understand rightly that a Greek play is to be given soon at the University? . And like Pericles, does Jefferson open the theater free to the mob? I quiver in suspense." Signed in full "Wallace Gould".In a second letter, nearly 600 words densely typed on 2 pages, Gould again inquires about Aphrodite, apologizing for the necessity of trading copies with Preston because his "financial affairs have come to a crisis here." He comments on Preston's forthcoming book "Mad Anthony Wayne": "I am eager to read the history of your American madman. Get the publishers to do up the book, so that you will have no excuse for not sending it." He goes on to say: "You asked about Farmville. Farmville is where Lee surrendered ----- southern Virginia, middle southern, a hundred and some miles from Richmond. No, less than a hundred. Peggy Hopkins Joyce and I put Farmville on the map. She was born here." Signed in full.In his third letter of approximately 380 words, Gould now addresses his friend as "My dear Preston" and indirectly inquires if Preston has received his copy of Aphrodite. He goes on to reveal that "You and Alfred Kreymborg are the only ones I ever write to, these days. Do you know Alfred? He is an exception to the rule that applies to the artistic cult, so far as old fashioned friendship goes." He later asks, "By the way, honey, solve a mystery for me if you can. In the November number of Harper's (I think November) there was a sonnet with a strange theme. It was written by a woman by the name of Onsett or some such name and was called Expatriate ------- was all about some poor devil playing solitaire as I do in my own poems, exactly, and about teakwood (which I would not have in the house). But the rest of it ran true, even to the end, at which point the expatriate, whatever that is, went to the window and looked out on the night, and off, up toward Maine. Strange, is it not?" Gould has made 2 corrections in pencil and signed in pencil "Wallace Gould". The left edge of this letter is roughed and the letter is slightly soiled and creased with several finger smudges as if it had been handled frequently. His last sad letter, nearly 400 words, speaks of deep poverty: "There must come a change before I do more work. My very soul is sick with disgust and boredom. For the first time in my life I have been powerless to act ------ to rouse myself and get out of it all. Sheer poverty has forced me to chloroform all but three of my only spiritual companions, my cats, and for them I have three bottles of chloroform ready. I read your letter with a thrill for you, however, and particularly your hopes of going westward, willy-nilly, even though with money. Go on. Make yourse [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Foochow UHS". Union High School teacher's photograph album; the Methodist Episcopal Church in China, 1930.

1930 - The Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church sent its first missionaries to Foochow (Fuzchou), China, in 1846. Foochow was an important provincial capital of Fujian province. This album is a record of some of the missionary teachers at the schools in 'Foochow' in the 1930s, during the Chinese Civil War.This home made photographic album consists of 7 b&w real photographs laid down, in a folding captioned album, with stiff red boards, the front board with handwritten title "Foochow UHS" and the rear, in Chinese characters. The photographs include: "Hillside Looking SW across Lotus Lake to River Min"; The House by the Side of the Road, SE corner where dispensary is"; "'We' in south yard, hillside"; Taken August 1930, G. M. N. "Jimmie and I, Jean and "Jade Eyes"; "Living and Dining Room, Camera looking East"; "George in his Study"; and "Hillside Taken from Hill back of School looking north toward hills where fighting occurred". The last names of the subjects are not noted; the one photograph of Westerners shows a white man with tennis racket, his seated wife, and a standing young woman holding a cat, in which the man is noted as "Jimmie". "Jimmie" is possibly James Edward Skinner, who moved from Kucheng to Yenping, on the Min River in the Fukien Province. Skinner built the Alden Speare Memorial Hospital, and became superintendent of the hospital, educating Chinese doctors. During this period of the Chinese civil war, Mao Zedong's army was struggling with the Communist army for control of the area. The fighting mentioned in the caption of the photograph of the school most likely refers to this. In 1933, Yenping fell to the Communists and the Skinners escaped to Haitan Island.Album measures 8 x 7" folded. Very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Civilization and its Discontents.

London: by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the the Hogarth Press and [by] The Institute of Psycho-Analysis,, 1930. Authorized translation by Joan Riviere. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Photographic portrait frontispiece. Laid-in manuscript note explaining provenance. Light foxing to edges, endleaves, and very occasionally to margins, light toning, very short nick to fore edge of earlier leaves. A very good copy. First edition in English, first impression. Inscribed by Alec Guinness "For My dear Tony, with gratitude and most sincere admiration, and may we do lots more together. Alec, Hamlet 1938" on the front free endpaper. The recipient was Tyrone Guthrie, who directed Guinness as Hamlet in his " famous—some would say notorious—modern-dress production at the Old Vic in 1938" (ODNB). For Guinness it was the culmination of a string of classic roles through which he established his reputation. He later damned his own performance as "'pale, ersatz Gielgudry', yet James Agate, while not immediately at home with Guinness's distaste for heroic struttings and bellowings, considered his playing of the last scene the finest he had ever seen" (Telegraph obituary). Civilization and its Discontents was originally published in Vienna in the previous year as Das Unbehagen in der Kultur.
