        Alay-Oop

Coward, McCann, New York 1930 - Very good or thereabouts in a very good or slightly less than dust jacket, with the jacket showing chipping at the upper and lower front panel, an old tape repair at the spine. Spine cloth slightly toned, boards slightly soiled. This copy inscribed with a drawing of men on a trapeze and signed by Gropper on the title page verso, which is detached but cleanly so, a minor repair. As is often said, a pioneering form of the modern graphic novel, not often found in a jacket, and found even less often when signed. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Jeeves

      A. L. Burt (1930), New York - Original olive green cloth lettered in black. A very clean, bright and solid copy of the book. The complete dust jacket is quite bright as well with some shallow chipping at the top edge of the spine and also showing some faint spotting to the spine. A very nice copy of this reprint edtion. Burt issued their first printing in 1925 and re-issued, I think, in 1929, 1930, 1931 and 1936. This copy is the 1930 copy with "Who Killed Charmian Karslake" as the final title listed on the rear panel. A very bright and pleasing copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The first printing can be identified by the absence of the word ?reprinted? which appears on the back of the title-page of the next printing? (Linder). The Tale of Little Pig Robinson is a children's book written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter as part of the Peter Rabbit series. The book contains eight chapters and numerous illustrations. Though the book was one of Potter's last publications in 1930, it was one of the first stories she wrote. Potter introduces the story as her explanation of how the pig from Edward Lear's poem, "The Owl and the Pussycat" comes to travel to the "land where the Bong-Tree grows". Little Pig Robinson's aunts, Miss Porcas and Miss Dorcas, send him to the market to sell produce from their farm and purchase certain items they need. On his way home from the market, Little Pig Robinson is stopped by a sailor who offers him an array of goods and an opportunity to travel. Little Pig Robinson agrees to the sailor's offer and goes with the sailor to the ship. There, the sailor tells Little Pig Robinson to go down and help himself to "muffins and crumpets". The sailors then leave the dock and Little Pig Robinson quickly realizes he has been kidnapped. He further realizes that the sailor he had met at the market was in truth the ship's cook who had planned to turn Little Pig Robinson into a fine feast for the ship's men. With the help of the ship's resident cat, Little Pig Robinson escapes on a row boat and finds his way to "the land where the Bong tree grows". Some time later Pig Robinson meets the The Owl and the Pussycat there.Linder, p. 430. Quinby 30. V & A 1596.

        Animal Stories

Macmillan and Co. Limited, London 1930 - 4to., 18.6 x 25.2cm red cloth with black stamped illustration to the front and titles and decoration to the spine. 215pp (1) with 8 coloured plates and numerous black and white illustrations by Stuart Tresillian. Original illustrated unclipped dust jacket with 6/-price to the front flap and list of author's children's titles to the rear panel. The only issue to have 8 full colour plates (Richards E1-134). The boards are bright and clean with the black printed illustration contrasting dramatically with the red cloth. There is just a very little rubbing and loss of colour to the upper and lower edge and faint spotting to the edge of the text block. Internally, the book is very good with no inscriptions or book plates and only very light toning to the free endpapers and the occasional area of light spotting. The extremely scarce dust jacket illustrated by Stuart Tresillian is lightly dust stained to the rear panel and has a little creasing along the top edge. However, it is virtually complete, with chips to the head of the spine measuring 1.2cm at most, minimal loss to the fore edge corner and a 4mm chip from the top edge. Closed tears of 0.9 and 3cm to the lower edge of the rear panel. The top edge has a number of closed tears four of over 1cm and a couple of 1-2mm. All in all a VG+ copy in a VG+ scarce dust jacket with beautiful images by an illustrator most famous for his illustrations for Enid Blyton's Adventure series. The first printing can be identified by the absence of the word ‘reprinted’ which appears on the back of the title-page of the next printing” (Linder). 430. Quinby 30. V & A 1596.
