[DESIGN BY TELINGATER] Slovo predostavlyaetsya Kirsanovu [i.e. The word belongs to Kirsanov]

Moscow: GIZ, 1930. [84] pp. 20,5х9 cm. Original wrappers with letterpress lettering and photomontage illustrations. A very good copy. Some restoration of the covers. One of 3000 copies. An exceptional example of innovative constructivist typographic design by Telingater that intended to enhance the work of the leftist poet Semyon Kirsanov. Solomon Telingater (1903-1969) was a Russian graphic artist, designer and typeface designer. Telingater wrote influential books on typography and designed some of the most memorable books of the Soviet period. He was the first Soviet citizen to receive the Gutenberg award for his achievements in designing books and typefaces. The pioneer in printing arts was El Lissitzky who saw the book as a visual object, but the widespread acceptance of these ideas did not occur until the turn of the 1920s and '30s as a result of the efforts of his young followers. First among them was Telingater. He designed books as if they were films, or a monumental poster - as sophisticated artistic construction. This kind of book was produced for its collective impact, not merely for the joy of the individual reader. His work is akin to the art of declamation: letters react to slightest fluctuations of poetic intonation instantly changing the size and color. His vision also affected what literary genres he chose to work with, and Kirsanov's poetic work provided appropriate material to match Telingater's extraordinary visual imagination. The front wrapper suggests a combination of agit-prop and Dadaist elements via collage techniques. For one particular poem, the type is laid out in the shape of a man. All elements of the book, including the text itself, are connected as one visual art object which makes a very strong impression on its readers.

Drinks - Long and Short [Cocktails]

William Heinemann, Ltd London 1930 - New Impression (First Printing 1925). Preface by X. Marcel Boulestin. J. E. Laboureur dustjacket art and frontis. Collection of cocktails and other drinks including an early appearance in print of the cocktail referred to as The Dunhill (and served at the Savoy), presumed to have been invented at the Hatchett's Bar in London and first published in the 1925 edition of this title. Blogger Martin Doudoroff writes of this title: "The book is curious for featuring recipes that are all scaled for a dinner party of six, and historically significant as perhaps the first important cocktail book written by foodies rather than bartenders." Located in "Cocktail Books, Selected Titles from the Library of Congress Collections". Very scarce in dustjacket. Very Good, cheap cloth showing crack along front spine gutter (not effecting binding strength), some foxing to page edges and some page margins, in Very Good dustjacket, short closed tear at lower front panel.       Paris: The Hours Press,, 1930. Octavo, pp. 8. Original brick red printed wrappers, stapled as issued. Housed in a custom made dark red morocco, fleece-lined solander box. Morocco book label of John Carville (on inside front cover of box). Light diagonal creasing from fore-edge to bottom edge, slight dampstain at fore-edge and lower corner of covers, peripheral toning, very slight rust marks from staples. First edition, one of 300 copies (this copy unnumbered), of Beckett's first separately published work. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the limitation leaf: "for Dr. Philip Murray from Samuel Beckett - March 1987". Murray was a bibliophile and the author of Adventures of a Book Collector (2011); apparently it was his practice to send books to authors with a stamped addressed envelope enclosed so that they could sign and return the books to him - simple but effective. Beckett's biographer Deirdre Bair gives a colourful description of the poem's inception and composition: "On the afternoon of June 15 [1930], Beckett was in his room on the rue d'Ulm, desultorily going through a sheaf of notes on Geulincx [the Flemish philosopher Arnold Geulincx, a disciple of Descartes], when [Thomas] McGreevy mentioned that Richard Aldington was disappointed by the lacklustre quality of the on hundred or more poems he had just read... None, Aldington said, was worthy of the ten-pound prize, let alone publication by the Hours Press. Jokingly, McGreevy suggested that Beckett dash off a poem to take his mind off Joyce and get it over to Cunard's shop on the rue Guenegaud before midnight when the contest officially ended. Becket laughed, but when McGreevy left he thumbed through his notebook on Descartes, and as he read, an idea for a poem began to form in his mind... He wrote the manuscript in longhand on stationary filched from the Hotel Bristol, Carcassone. Six pages and ninety-eight lines long (length was limited to one hundred lines), with only two or three minor word changes in the manuscript, the poem seems to have been almost completely thought out before Beckett committed it to paper... In general, Whoroscope is a witty, superficial exhibition of esoteric knowledge... Actually both Cunard and Aldington were so puzzled by the poem's obscurities that they barely recognized what it was about. They sent for Beckett in great haste in the early morning of June 16, and he rushed to the rue Guenegaud. When they found out how quickly the poem had been written, they were astonished and pleased with this proof that Beckett was someone of genius" (Samuel Beckett: A Biography, 1993, pp. 101-04).

Akvarell. Signerad: "R Holtermann". Odaterad, men troligen utförd på 1930-talet. 30 × 17 cm.

Copy no. 58 of 150 on high-class paper. Inscribed by the artist. 1st Indian Round-Table Conference, complete. Emery Kelen was born in Györ, Hungary in 1896. During the 1920s and 1930s, Kelen worked in Europe illustrating inter-war Europe with his cartoons. As witnesses to this history, he drew caricatures of famous diplomats and statesmen of the day and satirical cartoons of their activities. He was also the dedicated pictorial reporter of the meetings and delegates of the League of Nations. As active members of the international press corps, his work was eagerly sought after providing a humorous daily record of events at a time when cameras were not allowed in the conference rooms. His work was published widely in the European press. He departed Europe on 13 December 1938 aided by friends who recognized the impending dangers facing him due to being Jewish and past public criticism of Hitler's rise to power. Kelen reported on and caricatured diplomats and politicians from The Indian Round Table Conferences organized by the British Government to discuss constitutional reforms in India.

The Director's Photograph Album for Ward Manor, the Old Folks Home and Youth Camp of New York City's Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor

Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, 1930. Photograph Album. Very Good. Photography likely by Alfred Tennyson Beales. This large photograph album (13" x 15") contains 40 pages with over 80 photographs ranging in size from approximately 3" x 5" to 8" x 10". Almost all of the photographs have typed captions, many long and detailed. A large map and a two-page essay are mounted on three of the pages. Some of the pages have a little light edge-wear, but the photographs are in nice shape; several pages have vacant spaces where a few photographs have been removed. The album shows some wear and the joint of the front cover has been repaired with black cloth tape. The album cover has been stamped in gilt, "Ward Manor / On the Hudson / Ollie A. Randall." Ward Manor was the Old Folk's Home and Youth Camp for the New York City's Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor (AICP). In 1926, William Boyd, the owner of a baking company, purchased a large grey stone building and the surrounding land near Annandale-on-Hudson and donated it to the ACIP, which in turn used it create "a welcoming place for poor people to spend the last years of their lives." Eventually the ACIP bought surrounding properties and not only expanded the number of elderly rooms, but also created a summer vacation resort for semi-employed adults and a summer camp for impoverished children. Ollie A. Randall was the director of Ward Manor from 1926 until 1945, and this is her personal photograph album. Images include photos of the buildings, the grounds, the residents engaged in activities (gardening, hiking, knitting, rug making, etc.), common and personal rooms, resort activities (tennis, shuffleboard, horseshoe pitching, croquet), and camp scenes (campers, lodging, swiming, interacting with animals, ping-pong, arts and crafts, outdoor games, plays and performances, hayride, farming, a children's circus, etc. Ward Manor was transferred to Bard College in 1963 and today, the grey stone building serves as a domitory and student center. This is a unique photographic record of an important innovative and pioneering urban social program.

[KHLEBNIKOV, ZDANEVICH & KRUCHYONYKH] Zverinets [i.s. At the Zoo (Menagerie)]

Moscow: Gruppa druzei Khlebnikova, 1930. 17 pp. 21,2x17,8 cm. Lithographed edition made within the series Neizdannyi Khlebnikov (i.e. The Unpublished Khlebnikov). In original wrappers with pictorial and typographical lithograph design by Kirill Zdanevich. Edited by Aleksei Kruchyonykh. Introduction by Yurii Olesha. Slight restoration to the bottom of the spine. Overall a near fine clean copy. One of 130 copies. Very rare. This is the first and only separate edition of the poem At the Zoo by Velimir Khlebnikov (1885-1922). At that time a lot of people were working on publishing his works like Aleksei Kruchyonykh who was gathering unpublished materials. Another reason for printing this book was to make a connection with the first publication of the poem in 1910 in Sadok Sudei almanac which was handwritten and lithographed (so was this edition). This edition also includes memories and comments by Kruchyonykh and little known introduction by Yurii Olesha. Not only Olesha but a few other Russian critics and writers in 1920s praised At the Zoo as an ideal example of a new poetry, new «academy», manifesto for young writers. Zverinets is an excellent example of Russian futurism and a first attempt to create a new poetic structure different from usual romantic and post-romantic poetry. MoMA. 926. WorldCat located one copy (Getty Research Institute).

Each is about 15x20 inches, black ink and paint, heightened in white. A little rubbing or light chipping along the edges, otherwise in excellent condition. Sir Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. (1909-2000) was an iconic American actor (credited with more than 50 films, including the starring role in "Gunga Din"), and a highly decorated naval officer of World War II.
