Published by the author and printed on fine coated paper, this complete run of 11 fascicules contains the complete catalogue raisonné of Honoré Daumier's lithographic work. The fascicules are bound two per volume, except for the last one (volume 5) which has three, as it includes fascicule 29 bis (Tables). Illustrated with over four thousand b/w photographic reproductions, this work was published in Loys Delteil's series "Le Peintre-Graveur Illustré" (volume 20 up to 29 bis). Ex-library copies with reference number at tail of spines, and bookplate on inside of each of the five volumes. Minor shelf-wear, soiling and rubbing along edges of binding. Text and captions in French. Binding in overall good+, interior in very good condition. About the artist: Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) was a celebrated French printmaker, caricaturist, painter, and sculptor, whose many works offer commentary on social and political life in France in the 19th century. First printing in original 1st issue Modern Library DJ with 170 books listed in the Modern Library Collection on rear of DJ. DJ price of 95 cents intact on DJ flap. DJ artwork is by Wuyts. Book is beautiful. Binding and hinges are strong. Flexi-cloth panels are clean with sharp corners. On February 25th, 1930, the Modern Library printed their First Edition of this title. The first ML edition was offered in a choice of 4 hues without preference to which of the 4 colors came first. Red, Blue, Green and Maroon. Cloth color would in turn dictate the corresponding illustrative endpaper color as well as the topstain color. In my experience, Maroon seems to be the least common color. Original first issue DJ shows rubbing/wrinkle along edges with shallow chipping. DJ shows professional reinforcement on interior. Front flap fold of DJ is cracked along crease but sits snug in place. An excellent copy of the 1st ML edition, 1st printing in original, corresponding 1st issue DJ with 170 books listed in the ML series up to that point. A fascinating and frequently moving group of letters, in which Frost discusses his work ("I just finished a canvas from memory of that Maryland country...Everything I've done up to this has been a flop as I've been pressing and overworking--but I think I've gotten hold of the thing again...That woodcock stuff is God Awful hard to do, hard not to get it all broken up and cluttered with detail"), his personal problems ("I have certainly been taking no care of myself for years--jacking myself up with liquor to keep going for heaven knows how long"), business matters concerning his work for The Sportsman magazine and others ("If it costs more to make a single plate and if you can get the Woodcock and Sportsman [to] agree to that program tell them to take the cost of printing out of what they were to pay for the use of the originals"), and makes occasional references to his famous father ("Do you remember Dad's old fishing 'comic' "How did you come to fall in?" "I didn't come to fall in, I came to fish"). In 1934, Frost painted an oil on commision by Connett, entitled Maryland Marsh, printed as a sporting aquatint by the Derrydale Press in 1936.       New York: Horace Liveright. 1930 - Hart Crane. THE BRIDGE. Published in New York by Horace Liveright in 1930. Frontispiece photograph of the Brooklyn Bridge by Walker Evans. The book is fine in dark blue cloth with bright gilt lettering and design on the front cover and spine. The text is crisp and unmarked. The beautifully designed dust jacket has no restoration and is not price-clipped. As such it is a splendid survival with the Walker Evans photo on the front panel. The rear panel has blurbs by Eugene O'Neill, Waldo Frank, and Edmund Wilson for Hart Crane's first book, White Buildings. There is some very minor chipping along with the slightest edge wear. This is the first American and first trade edition of this remarkable book-length poem. A slightly different earlier version was published in February 1930 in a very limited edition by Harry Crosby's Black Sun Press in Paris which contained three Walker Evans photographs.       Kibbo Kift, London 1930 - The Kindred Called The Kibbo Kift has Something to Say To You. Original hard card 4pp. calling card extolling the Economic Runneymede in Original leather case. Stained. The organisation was founded by the charismatic Englishman John Hargrave (aka 'White Fox'), artist, author and Boy Scout Commissioner for Woodcraft and Camping, who had become disenchanted with the increasingly militaristic tendency in the Scout movement after World War I. Hargrave was promptly expelled from the Scouts by Scout founder Robert Baden-Powell. With a small group of like-minded, dissident, anti-war Scoutmasters and Scoutmistresses under his own direct leadership, he set about building an alternative and very different movement. Baden-Powell expelled Hargrave with extreme reluctance, and only after some wealthy backers had threatened to withdraw funding from the Scouts unless he was expelled. The Kibbo Kift (archaic Kentish dialect for 'proof of great strength'[2]) has been described as 'the only genuine English national movement of modern times' and was certainly very different from Baden-Powell's Boy Scouts. Based on the woodcraft principles of naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton that had been a key part of the early Scout programme, the Kibbo Kift was to be not merely a youth organisation but was to involve all ages and, very daring for the times, it was open to both sexes. The ideas of world peace and the regeneration of urban man through the open-air life replaced the nationalism and militarism Hargrave had detested in the post-World War I Scouts. Kinsmen and women were organised in Clans, Tribes and Lodges. Each individual took a 'woodcraft name', inspired by their ideas of 'Indian-style' names. The correct costume had to be hand-made by each individual or 'rooftree' (family group) and while the everyday 'habit' of Saxon hood, jerkin, shorts and long cloak must have seemed outlandish enough in the English countryside of the early 1920s; for ceremonial occasions, brilliantly coloured surcoats or silk-embroidered robes were worn by the various office-holders such as the Tallykeeper, Campswarden, Ritesmaster and Gleeman. Hargrave himself was 'Head Man' and his leadership was dynamic, inspirational and frankly autocratic. The Mark of the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift is typical of the symbolism that can be seen in many of their designs. Its meaning is: Worship (The K sign) Forever (the Circle of Unity and Eternity) Life (the Flame) through Knowledge (the Tree). Or again, ‘Worship Life Forever with Knowledge’. The Kibbo Kift's central activities of hiking and camping were refined and elevated to the level of a spiritual exercise. The weekend 'Tribal' Camps and the great annual 'Althing' were marked by colourful and impressive ritual, inspired by their ideas of what Native American ceremonies might be like, but couched in language reminiscent of the Norse Sagas and rich in Saxon archaisms. Kinsmen were not only required to make their own lightweight, one-man hiking tents (the first seen in England) but to decorate them with vivid, symbolic designs of their own devising. Influenced by Hargrave's own artistic taste, an ultra-modern 'futurist' style of design became general, and the robes, regalia, tents and other items of decorative art, often of an extremely high standard, represent an extraordinary 'democratisation' of the avant-garde art of the day. The Kibbo Kift were never more than a few hundred strong. Kinsmen and Kinswomen included the Suffragettes Emmeline Pethick Lawrence, Mary Neal and May Billinghurst, the journalist Henry Nevinson, the photographer Angus McBean, and Ruth Clark. The Advisory Committee included Havelock Ellis, Maurice Maeterlinck, the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, H. G. Wells and Professor Julian Huxley. D. H. Lawrence took an interest in the Kindred and it has been suggested that Mellors in Lady Chatterley's Lover is based on an archetypal Kinsman. Joannès Drevet. ( père de Joanny Drevet ) . Né à Lyon en 1854, il y est mort en 1940. Il a très largement représenté sa ville natale, en particulier dans ce monument qu'est Le Lyon de nos pères, d'Emmanuel Vingtrinier, ouvrage, qui malgré le côté souvent très sombre des illustrations est très recherché. Mais il est une autre facette du personnage, que l'on ne connaît pas , c'est celle de l'aquarelliste qui a peint de nombreux paysage du Lyonnais, du Dauphiné et des Alpes . ( un ouvrage sur cette partie méconnue de son oeuvre , a été publié en 1935 , sous le titre " Souvenirs " , à seulement 40 exemplaires , avec de nombreuses reproductions couleurs de ses aquarelles ). Cette facette est largement plus lumineuse et plus joyeuse que celle du graveur. Le style de cette aquarelle nous le prouve aisément . C'est un ravissement de fraîcheur et de spontanéité.

With a lengthy inscription by the author on the flyleaf to Walter de la Mare, whose bookplate is on the facing pastedown: 'Dear Mr. de la Mare, I hope that you will honour me by accepting, as from one frequenter of desert islands to another, this book. I speak of my share in it: for the great Saga itself, whose portrait I have rashly tried to paint, & to frame, can only confer honour upon anybody connected with it, living or dead. So at least it seems to me, after five years' living at close quarters with it. Yours very truly, E. R. Eddison'. The inscription refers obliquely to the quotation from de la Mare's 'Desert Islands' that Eddison has used as the epigraph to the book - marking this as a very significant presentation (the other epigraph, from Sappho, eliminates the possibility of there being more than one such copy). Praised by Lewis and Tolkien for his own creative work (the latter referring to him as the 'greatest and most convincing writer of invented worlds that I have read'), and exhibiting the same 'Norse complex' as a background to the fantasy world of his fiction - Eddison here undertakes, like Tolkien and earlier William Morris (a sure influence on both), a translation of the source material. An important and accomplished contribution to the field - and an excellent Fantasy association copy.

Illustrated with elegant silhouettes of men and women dressed in the height of fashion, each framed by a colorful border. Facing each silhouette or pair of silhouettes is a passage of German verse. This particular copy is specially bound as a gift for Hugo Steiner-Prag's fiftieth birthday. Bound in pink silk, with a hand-painted and gilt-stamped "50" to the upper cover. Housed in a box decorated with patterned paper. A printed sheet is laid in to the box with the dedication to Steiner-Prag from Karl Klingspor, dated December 12, 1930. Both Klingspor and Steiner-Prag moved in the same circles of German book design and production in the early nineteenth century. Klingspor, together with his brother Wilhelm, operated the Klingspor typefoundry in Offenbach am Main. Steiner-Prag was an illustrator and designer, serving as a professor of graphics at the Staatlichen Akademie für Graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe in Leipzig from 1907 to 1933. He also designed three typefaces, including the self-named Steiner-Prag-Schrift. This pretty item, pairing the finely detailed silhouettes and the traditional Gothic type, is therefore a fitting gift for the designer. Hinges on box starting, else fine.

        Rois De France Original Manuscript

      Paris, 1930. Unbound. Paul Fort's original manuscript, neatly and beautifully written in ink; quarto, 79 leaves of heavy cream paper and laid loose into a green portfolio. Paul Fort drew much of his inspiration from the Middle Ages, and the aballad form that he used almost exclusively was taken from the same period. He filled some forty volumes with his delicate ballads. He was also active in the theatre, even before the turn of the century, writing some plays himself and producing what were considered "difficult" plays by some of his contemporaries. In 1956, he received the Grand Literary Prize of the City of Paris for his works. Fine. Together with the limited edition of the book (#48 of 200 copies), Inscribed to Madame Christian Schram Senior and with an 11 line holograph poem, initialed "P. F." and dated Paris, May, 1931; and with an excellent 4 page autograph letter signed and dated October 8, 1930. A near fine copy.

        Two personal scrapbook-photograph albums belonging to Buckskin Ben Stalker, the owner of Buckskin Ben's Wild West Show

      Cambridge, Indiana, 1930. Two albums (each approximately 9" x 11.5") containing 74 pages with over 150 newspaper clippings, 97 photographs and real-photo-postcards (RPPC), several business letters, and three promotional handbills. The inside cover of one album is annotated in green ink: "Property of / Buckskin Ben (Ben Stalker) / Per. Address. / Buckskin Ben's Famous / Wild West Show / Cambridge City. Ind. / Lloyd Jeffries / Publicity Director." Buckskin Ben's photographic business card is mounted below the inscription. The photographs and RPPC include images of Ben in costume and mufti, trick riding, bucking broncos, animal acts including a high-diving dog, rope tricks, trick shots and sharpshooting by the Stalker children, the human impalement knife-throwing act, the cast relaxing, and more.All of the items in one album have been glued in place. Much of the material in the second album has been attached using what appear to be mounting "dots" that are integral to the pages. The albums have some wear, but all pages are soundly attached. Some of the clippings have toned. The spine of one album has been repaired with black cloth tape; now-yellowed cello-tape (affecting two clippings) was used to help hold its front cover in place. This is a unique, personal collections of memories compiled over almost thirty years by the owner and star-performer of a very successful Wild West Show. Buckskin Ben's Wild West, which has been called "The Biggest Little Wild West Show on Earth," was the creation of Ben Stalker, who was born in what is now the state of Oklahoma and never knew his parents. Stalker claimed to have been raised in an isolated cabin by a Native American trapper known as Rocky Mountain Tom White until the age of 12 when, according to a later annotation in the one of the scrapbooks, he a became a temporary ward of the famous pioneer, Ezra Meeker. Eventually, Ben found work on a cattle drive and by the age of 15 had become a seasoned cowboy. He married in the mid-1880s and shortly after became inspired to start a Wild West show on his own. His new wife, Mary shared his vision, picked up a rifle for the first time, and practiced until she became a crack shot. Mary also agreed to participate in what would become their featured "Human Impalement Act," where she stood stock-still against a wooden backboard while Ben threw knives around her profile. Eventually, they raised five children, and all became full-fledged sharpshooters featured in the show along with a number of other cowboy performers who specialized in rough and trick riding, lasso throwing, rope tricks, and animal acts. Ben's shows were billed as "Refined, High Class" entertainment with "No gambling or immoral attractions connected to the company." Each show consisted of six to eight half-hour acts and began with a musical performance by the exceptionally popular Buckskin Ben Family Band in which every family member played an instrument. Although the show always remained rather small, it was very successful, and in 1905 appeared for 14 weeks at Coney Island. Ben frequently signed on for entire seasons to travel with larger circuses and carnivals performing throughout the East, Midwest, Canada, and Mexico. When not on tour, the Stalker family and there show resided in Cambridge, Indiana. The show, renamed Buckskin Ben's Wild West Dog and Pony Show, continued in operation until 1929 when Ben retired at the age of 86.

Signed by the artist in the lower right corner. The painting was produced to serve as the frontispiece for Paul Annixter's Wilderness Ways (1930). Bull was among the most respected illustrators of North American wildlife during the first half of the 20th century. A native of West Walworth, New York, he studied at the Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute in Rochester, before becoming an apprentice taxidermist at the Ward Museum of Natural History. In 1893 he prepared an exhibition of 400 birds for the Guatemalan government for the World's Columbia Exposition in Chicago. His outstanding work on the project won him an appointment as chief taxidermist of the National Museum in Washington. Much of his free time was devoted to his lifelong pursuit of drawing and painting animals, and he was a frequent visitor to the National Zoo; he also took classes at the Corcoran Gallery. Determined to devote himself fulltime to his art, he moved to New York, spending decades there producing paintings for illustrating books and magazine articles, more than 100 titles, and contributing regularly to the Saturday Evening Post, Life, Colliers, and other periodicals. He was especially noted for the anatomical realism of his depictions, a skill derived from his long experience as a taxidermist. Housed in a custom red crushed half morocco solander box. Photographic frontispiece and 15 plates of which 12 from photographs, folding map, 8 maps and 2 plans to the text. Spine faded, and with a short closed nick to the headcap, very small portion of wear to head of front joint, corners very lightly bumped and rubbed, a few small pale marks to front cover, light toning. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, first state (without the cancel half-title). With Churchill's signed inscription to the front free endpaper: "Inscribed for Oliver Baldwin by his colleague at Westminster, Winston Churchill, August 1936". A superb association copy of Churchill's first volume of sustained biography. Oliver Baldwin (1899-1958) rebelled against the politics of his father, Stanley, and was elected Labour MP for Dudley in 1929, having unsuccessfully contested the same seat in 1924. He had previously seen active service in France before being appointed an infantry instructor in newly independent Armenia and serving in the Turkish-Armenian War, during which he was arrested first by Bolshevik revolutionaries and later by Turkish authorities who suspected him of being a Russian spy. When Stanley Baldwin became prime minister of the National Government in 1935 Churchill was invited to serve on the air defence committee, but really was hoping for a cabinet role. That winter he travelled to Morocco, where he received the news that his son, Randolph, was to contest the Ross and Cromarty by-election in February as Unionist candidate against Malcolm MacDonald, son of Ramsay and, until his narrow defeat in the general election in November, one of only eight remaining Labour MPs who supported the National Government. Churchill was appalled, fearing the consequences for his advancement under Baldwin, and wrote to Clementine that "Rothermere is sending Oliver Baldwin to write up Randolph, which he is apparently ready to do, and to write down Malcolm, which of course is what all other Socialists revel in. So we shall have Ramsay's son, Baldwin's son and my son ? all mauling each other in this remote constituency" (Gilbert, Churchill, vol. 5, p. 697). Churchill appears to have used his influence with Rothermere, who soon arranged for Oliver to write an article "examining the relations of fathers and sons in politics and pointing out that sons must take their own line and their fathers cannot be held responsible" (idem, p. 698). MacDonald comfortably won the election, with Randolph Churchill a distant third, and the following month Winston learned he was not to offered the newly created post of minister for the co-ordination of defence. Further differences between Churchill and the government were beginning to emerge, however, and in response to Baldwin's continuing emphasis on appeasement and defence, especially following the remilitarisation of the Rhineland, he "began to call for Britain to take the lead in the pursuit of collective security through the League of Nations, a policy that opened up the possibility of co-operation with the Soviet Union. And although he continued to base himself mainly on the Conservative Party, he began to reach out?with the assistance of a cross-party organization, the Focus?for Liberal and Labour support" (ODNB). In August, the month of the inscription, Churchill was much disturbed by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. He wrote two articles for the Evening Standard, the first arguing for collective neutrality among the European powers, the second predicting that "the growing ascendancy of Nazism" would be accelerated, regardless of the result (Gilbert, Churchill, vol. 5, p. 783). He took little part in public controversy, though protested privately to Anthony Eden about the proposed Anglo-Egyptian Treaty. His main undertaking was to complete the third volume of Marlborough. He left for France on the 24th, spending a few days painting at the château of Consuelo Balsan near Dreux before travelling to Paris, where he had a sobering lunchtime discussion with French politician Georges Mandel, together with his literary assistant William Deakin, who had come to collect the Marlborough proofs. He returned to England in October to pursue his campaign for "arms and the covenant". Oliver Baldwin later returned to parliament as Labour MP for Dudley in 1945, was elevated to the peerage on the death of his father in 1947, and the following year was appointed governor of the Leeward Islands, though was recalled in 1950, probably owing to combination of his outspoken socialist views, his racially inclusive approach to the local population, and his open homosexuality, which had already been cited against him at the time of his appointment. He died in 1958.

From the edition of 24 signed by the printer, ex-libris John Pierpont Morgan, small armorial bookplate front board verso, signed dedication from Duveen to J.P. Morgan librarian Bella da Costa Greene on flyleaf. This scarce volume is one of several that Duveen used to publicize his acquisition of the renowned Dreyfus collection of fine and decorative arts.

        "La sieste".

      1930 1Aquarelle et gouache sur papier, signée en haut à droite, (1930), 54 x 71 cm., cadre à caisson baguette chêne. Frans de GEETERE (1895 - 1968) étudie aux Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles, puis s'installe à Paris pour vivre sur une péniche près du Pont-Neuf. Il publie plusieurs ouvrages à compte d'auteur dont "les Malmenés" (1964). Il illustre "Les Chants de Maldoror" de LAUTREAMONT (1927), "les Lettres d'un satyre" de Rémy de GOURMONT(1926) et "Mes communions" de Georges EEKHOUD (1925). Cette oeuvre est à rapprocher d'une des 12 eaux-fortes de l'artiste illustrant l'ouvrage Spasmes et dont le titre est "La Porte Noire". Cette oeuvre d'une grande douceur montre une jeune femme de dos, endormie, jupon et jupe relevés sur le haut du bassin.

She was given the nicknames the "Black Venus" or the "Black Pearl", as well as the "Créole Goddess" in anglophone nations, while in France she has always been known in the old theatrical tradition as "La Baker."
