My Early Life, a variant binding unknown to bibliographers

Thornton Butterworth Limited, London 1930 - This is the first edition, first printing, of Churchill’s extremely popular autobiography. This copy offers an additional enticement to collectors, being a variant binding not noted by bibliographers and only the second copy we have encountered bound thus. Various states of the first edition, first printing are known. First states were bound in both a coarse and a smooth plum colored cloth, have the title stamped on the front cover in either three or five lines, and contain a list of 11 Churchill titles in the boxed list of "Works by the same Author" on the half-title verso. Second state copies are distinguished by the addition of "THE WORLD CRISIS: 1911-1914" to the boxed list of works on the half-title verso, making 12 titles. It was presumed that all second state copies featured bindings with a five-line title on the front cover. In his excellent bibliography of Churchill's works, Ronald Cohen states: ". most, perhaps even all, copies of the second state will be found in binding cases in which the front cover is stamped in 5, rather than 3, lines." This unrecorded variant is a first printing, second state copy in the coarse cloth binding with three lines on the front cover. Condition approaches very good overall. The binding remains tight with sharp corners, vividly bright boards, and little of the customary wear. The chief detraction is both sunning and some mottling to the spine color. The contents remain respectably bright with light spotting primarily confined to prelims and page edges. My Early Life covers the years from Churchill’s birth in 1874 to his first few years in Parliament. One can hardly ask for more adventurous content. These were momentous and formative years for Churchill, including his time as a war correspondent and cavalry officer in theatres as varied as Cuba, northwest India, and sub-Saharan and southern Africa. This time contained a wide range of experiences in Churchill’s life. Not only was he developing as an author, publishing his first books, and making his first lecture tour of North America, but this was also the time of his capture and daring escape during the Boer War, which made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. Churchill would take his seat in Parliament only weeks after the end of Queen Victoria's reign. My Early Life remains one of the most popular and widely read of all Churchill's books. And for good reason, as the work certainly ranks among the most charming and accessible of his many books. An original 1930 review likened it to a "beaker of Champagne." That effervescent charm endures; a more recent writer called it "a racy, humorous, self-deprecating classic of autobiography." To be sure, Churchill takes some liberties with facts and perhaps unduly lightens or over-simplifies certain events, but this is eminently forgivable and in keeping with the wit, pace, and engaging style that characterizes the book. My Early Life sold very well at the time and has seen a great many editions since, many of them collectible in their own right, but of course a premium attaches to first editions. The challenge for collectors is that the plum colored binding of this edition proved especially susceptible to fading, soiling, and wear; nearly all copies are considerably spine faded. Moreover, the contents are susceptible to heavy spotting and the binding is often cocked. This helps explain why so many first editions of this book have been torn apart and rebound.       Milwaukee WPA Handicraft Project [193?], Milwaukee - Elephant folio (19 x 25"). 10 loose framed plates, as issued. Original olive cloth portfolio with title label on front cover. String ties. This extremely rare portfolio was made by the Milwaukee Handicraft Project, one of the most successful and innovative Works Progress Administration (WPA*) projects in the US, which employed thousands of people, teaching them to make a variety of handmade wooden and cloth articles. This fifth volume (of a series of six) is devoted to motifs, and contains 10 splendid motifs in vibrant colors on linen. Each piece is taped on heavy cardstock (as issued) with paper frame overlays, and has a typed title label taped at lower margin of mount:Mother Goose A, B & C (3); Tyrolean; Circus Montage A, B & C (3); Country Schoolhouse; Madeira; and Dykstra Plaid. Verso of cardstock with stamp "WPA Handicraft Project # 7040, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Sponsored by Milwaukee County and Milwaukee State Teachers College." Ex-library copy with thin paper strip with typewritten title and library inventory number attached with non-abrasive tape along front joint. Some age wear, with moderate discoloration and age-toning to cloth. Ex libris and library barcode as well as publishers bookplate on inside of front cover. Abrasion on bookplate. Slight age toning to outer edges of cardstock. Portfolio in overall good- to good, interior in good+ to very good, plates in very good condition. * The WPA (Works Progress Administration) was a government sponsored project developed in the early 1930's to help remove hundreds from the welfare rolls and to provide many workers with the training and skills they needed to qualify for jobs in the private sector. It was Milwaukee's response to the Great Depression which hit America in 1929. At some stage over 1300 unskilled poor women produced work for the program making useful artistic items such as draperies, dolls, toys, furniture, prints, books, costumes and rugs. The project improved the quality of life of children and adults in Milwaukee by producing materials of exceptional design, outstanding quality and lasting educational value. Unfortunately the program was discontinued in 1943 mainly as a result of the economic recovery that took place in the United States. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Collected Poems

New York: Random House, 1930. Limited Edition. Hardcover. This is an exceptional copy of the first, signed, and limited edition of the book that won the author his second Pulitzer Prize in 1931. Collected Poems is the first collected edition of Frost?s poems. This signed and limited edition preceded the trade edition by four weeks. The 1,000 copies of the limited edition were signed by Frost on the half-title and hand-numbered on the limitation page, this copy numbered ?801?. Unique in content, this collection based on Frost's first five books saw two poems printed for the first time (?The Last Word of a Bluebird? and ?What Fifty Said?) as well as addition of four poems previously published only in periodicals. The binding is tan heavy linen cloth with beveled edges, brown leather spine label, and gilt top edge, the contents printed on heavy, laid paper with untrimmed fore and bottom edges. The book was issued in a glassine jacket with laid paper flaps pasted to the glassine; these jackets understandably typically do not survive and, without them, the handsome linen binding proved prone to wear, soiling, and toning. This copy is a truly fine survivor. The binding is beautifully bright and clean, square and tight with sharp corners and virtually no wear, the leather spine label flawless. The contents remain bright with no previous ownership marks and no spotting and a stiff feel, as if never read. The top edge gilt remains bright, the untrimmed fore and bottom edges immaculate. The glassine wrapper is poor, having admirably protected the book beneath, but suffered in the process. There are losses to extremities and the rear cover is raggedly torn, with a significant portion detached. The glue that affixed the original laid paper flaps to the glassine has long since failed, but the flaps nonetheless remain, laid in. The original glassine and paper flaps are protected beneath a removable, clear mylar cover. Iconic American poet and four-time Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Lee Frost (1874-1963), the quintessential poetic voice of New England, was actually born in San Francisco and first published in England. When Frost was eleven, his newly widowed mother moved east to Salem, New Hampshire, to resume a teaching career. There Frost swiftly found his poetic voice, infused by New England scenes and sensibilities. Promising as both a student and writer, Frost nonetheless dropped out of both Dartmouth and Harvard, supporting himself and a young family by teaching and farming. Ironically, it was a 1912 move to England with his wife and children ? ?the place to be poor and to write poems? ? that finally catalyzed his recognition as a noteworthy American poet. The manuscript of A Boy?s Will was completed in England and accepted for publication by David Nutt in 1913. A convocation of critical recognition, introduction to other writers, and creative energy supported the English publication of Frost?s second book, North of Boston, in 1914, after which ?Frost?s reputation as a leading poet had been firmly established in England, and Henry Holt of New York had agreed to publish his books in America.? Accolades met his return to America at the end of 1914 and by 1917 a move to Amherst ?launched him on the twofold career he would lead for the rest of his life: teaching whatever ?subjects? he pleased at a congenial college? and ?barding around,? his term for ?saying? poems in a conversational performance.? (ANB) By 1924 he had won the first of his eventual four Pulitzer Prizes for poetry (1931, 1937, and 1943). Frost spent the final decade and a half of his life as ?the most highly esteemed American poet of the twentieth century? with a host of academic and civic honors to his credit. Two years before his death he became the first poet to read in the program of a U.S. Presidential inauguration (Kennedy, January 1961). Bibliographic reference: Crane A14

Correspondence between George Sylvester Viereck and Bainbridge Colby (1930-1932).

      - 9 typed and signed letters with printed letterhead by Viereck: 8 to Colby and one to publisher Mitchell Kennerley. Plus a carbon copy of another letter to Colby in triple, a carbon duplicate of a letter from Colby to Viereck (June 24, 1931), also in triple, and a single carbon duplicate of a letter from Colby to Viereck (July 14, 1931). Most of the letters have been rust stained at the top by paperclips (partly still present). The letters have been folded, but the carbons haven't; otherwise in very good condition. Accompanying this ensemble are an article 'Did President Wilson Pledge Us to War Before He Was Re-Elected?' by G.S. Viereck (p. 54-62 in Liberty, March 19, 1932 (grey-stained) and a two-color 4-page publisher's prospect of Viereck's book of interviews Glimpses of the Great (1930).* Concerning a series of articles by Viereck about President Woodrow Wilson and his friendship with Colonel E.M. House in the course of study for his book The Strangest Friendship in History: Woodrow Wilson and Colonel House (1932). The first letter by Viereck, dating from June 22, 1931, puts three questions to Colby. There are 3 carbon copies of a retyped version of the letter (probably by Colby or his secretary (for there's a mistake in Viereck's printed address), and 3 carbon copies of Colby's 3-page answer. The other 7 letters, dating from June 27, 1931 to April 22, 1932, are about exchanging books and articles concerning Wilson, House and the Great War: "If a President can morally bind the United States to a course of action involving war we are faced b a serious invasion of the treaty-making powers of the Senate and the war-making powers of Congress, for which our children may have to pay with our blood." One gets the impression that the letters after July 14, 1931, went unanswered. The letter to Kennerley (1930) also concerns Colby, House and Wilson.George Sylvester Viereck (1884-1962) was a German born American sensation journalist, decadentistic novelist and poet, a Nazi sympathizer in the 30s and 40s, imprisoned 1942-1947 for his failure to register as a Nazi agent.

[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
