Autograph draft of poem to Liese Karr

Zurich, 1930. Einstein, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph draft of an untitled poem in German, written to Liese Karr. 1 sheet, written on the back of a mimeographed slip, two lines canceled but legible. Zürich, 1930 (dated in pencil by Einstein’s secretary, Helen Dukas, in the upper right corner). Tear at vertical crease, small chip in one margin, but very good. A charming example of Einstein’s gift for light verse. In November 1930 Einstein visited Zürich to be f?ted as a special guest of honor at the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology—the famous ETH, where he had received his diploma in physics in 1900 and later served as professor of theoretical physics. Einstein’s host during his stay in Zürich was Frau Liese Karr, widow of a grain merchant distantly related to Einstein’s mother; Einstein had known the Karr family since his student days, when the Karrs had kept “a watchful but discreet eye” on him during his time at the ETH (Clark, Einstein: The Life and Times, p. 25). Einstein’s poem, thanking Frau Karr for her hospitality, appears to have been drafted on the day of his departure by train for Berlin. The poem can be translated as follows: Dear Liese, before I rush off I still send you this line I heard many Swiss citizens Who talked untiringly This celebration was not in vain For it filled up my purse Valiant men, true and worthy, Not for nothing sparkles their plumage Now that it’s all over Can I find rest again Now […] it’s enough Today at four my train leaves To you, however, full of regret I say farewell It was cozy at your house You, your cat, your child and your feast.

For years he edited 'The Rustler' and 'The Rustonian.' He is also author of "The Romance of Greeting Cards," the first and only history of the industry." A Smithsonian Institute web site reports "The Rust Craft Greeting Card Company.was begun as a little bookshop by Fred Rust (1877?-1949) in Kansas City, Missouri, 1906. He consolidated his business in Boston in 1914. In the 1950s the company relocated to Dedham, Massachusetts and in 1981 merged with the Norcross Company." The Smithsonian site also states that their collection (chiefly Norcross cards) is "not only a history of the development of the greeting card industry but also a history of social trends in the United States" and gives "an indication of the quality and technology of the [printing] industry."         Globe-Gliding

Diessen: Roving Eye Press,, 1930. Octavo. Original purple paper wrappers, titles in gilt to front cover. Spine sunned and rubbed at edges of spine, creasing to tips, lower edge a little dusty, smudge to ink p. 43; a very good copy. First and sole edition of this book of poems, which are listed as "Stops" alphabetically by location. Roving Eye Press was initially founded in the late 1920s by Bob Brown and co-managed by his wife Rose. It was part of a larger literary and artistic movement of small presses that served the modernist avant-garde, including Nancy Cunard's Hours Press. Cunard described Brown as, "at the very centre of his time, a zeitgeist in himself" (Saper p. 179). Roving Eye Press was mobile in both geography (moving with Brown from the spa town Bad-Ems, Germany, to Cagnes-sur-mer, France, and much later, in the 1950s, to New York City) and scope (publishing art, poetry, political pamphlets and even cookbooks). In 2014, a small group of some of Bob Brown's (Robert Carlton Brown II) great grandchildren, together with a group of scholars, re-launched Roving Eye Press. This title is well-held institutionally in US but not in the UK, and is scarce in commerce.

Hamlet; The Tragedie Of Hamlet Prince Of Denmarke Edited By J. Dover Wilson Litt.D. From The Text Of The Second Quarto Printed In 1604-5 `According To The True And Perfect Coppie' With Which Are Also Printed The Hamlet Stories From Saxo Grammaticus And Belleforest And English Translation Therefrom

Cranach Press, Weimar 1930 - Weimar: Cranach Press, 1930. The Red Count's Hamlet.Count Harry Kessler's very own copy of the Cranach Hamlet, bound in full red-brick levant morocco leather by Otto Dorfner, signed binding. This is by far the best binding of the book, one of perhaps three dozen bound thus (Brinks 140) The colophon in this copy, printed in red, states simply: "This copy is not for sale It was printed for Count Harry Kessler" For this copy, Count Kessler had Dorfner additionally bind in (at the rear) the two full page advertisements for the English edition, both on the same Malliol-Kessler paper. J Dover Wilson's "Notes on The Tragedie of Hamlet," is inserted (as usual) into a sliding compartment attach to the inside back board. The interior of the book is in excellent condition: there is some bottom edge foxing on the following pages 76-81 (three leaves) and 124-127 (two leaves), not affecting the text or images. The book was printed damp, and these leaves may have had a little extra moisture. In any event, this is not a storage defect. Binding is sound. Conservator Stuart Brockman has expertly inserted thin vellum tabs under the leather spine, reducing pressure on the boards, allowing the book to opened safely. The front board gutter has also been lightly refurbished (previously dry and a little flakey). The book is housed in a matching red-brick quarter morocco clamshell, also by Brockman, with his binder's tag. This copy was likely with Kessler in Lyon when he died as it came to its previous owner through a binder in Lyon. This is the first appearance of the book in trade and an unqualified high-spot of fine printing. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        DAS ZAUBERBOOT

      - FREUD,TOM SEIDMANN. DAS ZAUBERBOOT. Berlin: Stuffer 1930 (1929 7-11 tausand). 4to (8 x 9 1/2"), cloth backed pictorial boards, light cover soil and a few internal spots else VG-fine and complete. This is a very rare MOVEABLE BOOK done by the niece of Sigmund Freud. Her moveable books were immediately hailed for their innovations, but because of her Jewish heritage, most copies of her books were destroyed and very few remain intact today. In this book, there are a variety of moveable pages including a revolving wheel and a Punch and Judy theatre. There is also a grid with cut-outs that enables the reader to develop 4 different stories from one page, and a clever tale that lets the reader make part of the illustrations disappear using special red paper. Hurlimann (p. 216-17) mentions these innovative books, remarkable not only for their moveable parts but for their integration of suitable text with artistic achievement. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Near Fine with light rubbing to boards as usual, light fading to spines, light rubbing at spine ends and light offsetting to pages from illustrations. A stunning set. [Rockwell] Kentâ??s affinity for the sea and knowledge of sea-faring gave his illustrations even more power and accuracy." It also helped to propel Moby Dick from semi-obscurity into its current fame as perhaps the quintessential American novel.

        Albert Einstein: A Biographical Portrait.

Albert & Charles Boni, New York 1930 - First edition of this Einstein biography. Octavo, original cloth. Signed and inscribed by Albert Einstein on the front free endpaper and dated in 1931 with a four line unique poem in German entirely in his hand, which translates, "This life is bizarre and unsound It looks clearer written down the urgencies that in the dark are touched don't frighten others very much." The recipient was the wife of Leonor Michaelis, who was a German chemist, and physician, known primarily for his work with Maud Menten on enzyme kinetics and Michaelis-Menten kinetics in 1913. Fine in the rare original dust jacket with some chips and wear. Rare and desirable. Albert Einstein developed the general theory of relativity, one of the two pillars of modern physics (alongside quantum mechanics). Einstein's work is also known for its influence on the philosophy of science. Einstein is best known in popular culture for his mass-energy equivalence formula E = mc2 (which has been dubbed "the world's most famous equation"). He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his "services to theoretical physics", in particular his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect, a pivotal step in the evolution of quantum theory (David Bodanis).
