Castle Gay. (A Dickson McCunn story)

London, Hodder and Stoughton. 1930. FIRST EDITION, with SIGNED loose letter. 8vo. Publisher's dark green cloth, some bumping to spine, corners showing the unmistakeable evidence of being found attractive to the rodentine palate which has affected both book cloth and wrapper though not severely to their detriment. Some foxing, to endpapers and edges, a little dusty on the top. Wrapper has some closed tears and creasing to the top edge of the rear panel. Unfaded and only lightly soiled, a respectable copy with a laid in letter in Buchan's trademark scrawl from Elsfield Manor, written on the 11th of January 1933 and mentioning a young lady, a time and a railway station with some reference to the weather. Undoubtedly a code and almost certainly requiring the immediate attention of the Gorbals Die-Hards.

        The World in 2030 A.D.

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1930. Quarto, with a frontispiece and eight plates. First edition of this extravagant vision of the future. The first Earl of Birkenhead (1872-1930) was a dashing figure, a 'swashbuckler' and 'ready subject for the caricaturist,' (DNB) who had a lengthy career as Solicitor General, and after 1919, Lord Chancellor.Reading The World in 2030 the knowledge that Birkenhead was drinking himself to death whilst writing comes as little surprise. It is an extraordinary work, displaying the occasional prescience of the unhinged. Amongst a very odd collection of statements about ectogenesis, the unlikelihood of future wars due to trans-national integration, scientific relativism, and the creation of a Florida-style 'playground for all Europe' in the basin of the Sahara, there is the bald announcement that atomic energy will be harnessed, that eugenics will be commonplace and the genes mapped, and that a 'mad dictator, jealous of Western progress, may precipitate a war, which will finally burn up and destroy Western civilisation'. Best of all, advances in television will mean that a busy Englishman will be able to follow 'an Australian test-match'.Accompanying the work are nine futurist plates by E. McKnight Kauffer. A fine copy in the original black cloth, lettered in crimson.

No date. Ca. 1930s? Color pictographic / pictorial map, 22 x 34 inches on sheet size 22 1/2 x 34 1/2 inches. Originally folded to 7 1/2 x 11 inches, now professionally flattened with tears and splits repaired on verso with Japanese paper (several short edge tears, a few long tears into image, now scarcely noticeable), little paper loss to lower right margin, uneven margins.         Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

Second Edition (Corrected Impression of the First Edition). Oxford, Oxford University Press, 1930. Octavo. 211 pages. Original Hardcover. A rare, crisp example of the corrected 1930 version of Tolkien and Gordon's edition of the great Middle English Poem, Sir Gawain. The book is squarely bound in the original publisher's cloth with gilt decoration; internally a little browning to pages. The ownership signature of 'D Rose 1936' appears on the first blank with further ink annotation to the text in the same hand. A very nice copy. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (Middle English: Sir Gawayn and þe Grene Kny?t) is a late 14th-century Middle English chivalric romance. It is one of the best known Arthurian stories, with its plot combining two types of folklore motifs, the beheading game and the exchange of winnings. The Green Knight is interpreted by some as a representation of the Green Man of folklore and by others as an allusion to Christ. Written in stanzas of alliterative verse, each of which ends in a rhyming bob and wheel, it draws on Welsh, Irish and English stories, as well as the French chivalric tradition. It is an important poem in the romance genre, which typically involves a hero who goes on a quest which tests his prowess, and it remains popular to this day in modern English renderings from J. R. R. Tolkien, Simon Armitage and others, as well as through film and stage adaptations.nnIt describes how Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur's Round Table, accepts a challenge from a mysterious "Green Knight" who challenges any knight to strike him with his axe if he will take a return blow in a year and a day. Gawain accepts and beheads him with his blow, at which the Green Knight stands up, picks up his head and reminds Gawain of the appointed time. In his struggles to keep his bargain Gawain demonstrates chivalry and loyalty until his honour is called into question by a test involving Lady Bertilak, the lady of the Green Knight's castle.nnThe poem survives in a single manuscript, the Cotton Nero A.x., which also includes three religious narrative poems: Pearl, Purity and Patience. All are thought to have been written by the same unknown author, possibly Cameron of Sutherland, dubbed the "Pearl Poet" or "Gawain Poet", since all four are written in a North West Midland dialect of Middle English (Wikipedia)

Zürcherische Seidenwebschule Zürich. Kurs 1930/31. Bindungslehre und Dekomposition.

/1 1930 - Folio (40 x 33 cm). Printed title-page, ff.135. 131 pages in neat German manuscript on squared paper and 4 printed on plain paper.Contemporary half brown morocco, title in gilt to upper board, contents metal bound, printed patterned end papers. Contains over 130 fabric swatches and numerous graphic images and diagrams. Covers slightly rubbed at extremities. The Zurich Silk-Weaving School was established in 1881 by several Swiss manufacturers worried by the competition presented by Chinese silk manufacturers. This text is a transcript of one of the school's courses divided into two parts; a 'Dekomposition' and a 'pattern-making' section. Material types covered include: Pongé navy, Honan imprimé, Shantung écru, Marceline, Taffetas, Sicilienne blanc, Bengaline rayé, Mogadors barré, Poult de Soie, Georgette, Moire musique, Crêpe de Chine, Crêpe satin, Ratzimir, Surah, Serge anvers, Pekin moiré, satin Duchesse, gabardine, atlas, plush and gauze. For each silk type, a fabric sample is pasted in with accompanying diagrams of the thread run. These graphic 'patronenpapiere' would have been used to programme weaving looms to create the desired pattern. The 'patronenpapiere' represent one of the first forms of 'digital' programming which - through the work of Charles Babbage - ultimately led to the computer programming techniques of today.
