Group of 4 original silver print portrait photographs of the noted American pianist by the distinguished Jewish Hungarian-born Dutch photographer Eva Besnyo (1910-2003)

Each 230 x 190 mm. (9" x 6-3/4") and with the photographer's stamp in blue ink to verso. One photograph with some spotting and slight silvering. Kilenyi had a successful international career as a pianist, performing widely in both Europe and North America in the 1930s. He studied at the Liszt Royal Academy in Budapest under Ernst von Dohnányi, with whom he developed a close friendship. Kilenyi's father was a teacher of George Gershwin. The photographer Besnyo was born in Budapest and moved to Berlin in 1930, where the photographic avant-garde was prominent; her photographs appeared in the Berliner Illustrierten Zeitung, among other publications. Besnyo became part of a circle of socially and politically engaged intellectuals and artists such as György Kepes, Joris Ivens, John Fernhout, Lászlo Moholy-Nagy, Otto Umbehr (Umbo), Robert Capa, and others. She established her own studio in 1931 but, with the growing threat of National Socialism, moved to Amsterdam in 1932, reaching some prominence there as a photographer until she was forbidden, under the occupation, to engage in all journalistic activities. Besnyo resumed her artistic activities after the war and went on to win many awards for her work. Her photographs are held by museums in both Holland and Germany. Abstracted from an article by Marion Beckers, Jewish Women: A Comprehensive Encyclopedia.

Autograph letter signed to B. Schott's Söhne Musikverlag.

1 page. Quarto (275 x 220 mm). Dated Budapest, June 20, 1930. In blue ink on stationery with watermark "Szenabella Stationer Szénásy Budapest." In German (with translation). Bartók is furious about a volume of Hungarian folksongs published by Schott. He has asked the publisher for "corrections," but Schott refuses to take action: "I am sorry to glean from your letter that you are not inclined to respond to my request (concerning Möller's edition, 'Ungarische Volkslieder'). Because of this I am forced to attempt to realize the corrections I would like by resorting to other means." Annotations by the recipient in blue and green pencil. Slightly worn; creased at folds; small burnhole and trace of rusty paper clip to left margin; small edge tears. Apparently unpublished. Not in Demeny: Béla Bartók Letters. The publication by Schott that offended Bartók was volume 12 of Das Lied der Völker, an anthology of folksongs edited by Heinrich Möller (1876-1958). The volume, issued in 1929, reprinted two of Bartók's folksong arrangements without permission. In addition, Möller attacked Bartók's scholarly work on the subject. As Schott was not bowing to Bartók's pressure for satisfaction, Bartók took revenge and reviewed Möller's publication in the Zeitschrift für Musikwissenschaft, August-September 1931, pp. 580-582. The review sparked a polemical exchange with Möller that lasted well into the following year. See "The Bartók-Möller Polemical Interchange," in Suchoff, ed.: Béla Bartók Studies in Ethnomusicology, pp. 142-157.

        Moby Dick or the Whale.

Folio, 3 volumes in original black cloth, lettered and with designs on spines and upper boards in silver. Illustrated by Rockwell Kent throughout. Lettering on spines a little dulled and rubbed, some light offsetting from plates to letterpress as usual. A very good set with original aluminium slipcase (slightly scatched), the original acetate wrappers not preserved. First Rockwell Kent edition, limited to 1,000 sets. One of the finest editions of Melville's masterpiece and one of the great American illustrated books of the 20th century. In 1926 Rockwell Kent (1882-1971), then just beginning to establish his fame as an artist, was approached by R. R. Donnelley and Sons to illustrate a new edition of Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast. Kent demurred, suggesting Moby Dick instead. Kent was given complete freedom to design and illustrate the three-volume set. The resulting work has been hailed as a masterpiece of 20th-century book illustration.

        LITTLE CAESAR (1930)

Warner Brothers 1930 - Vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white single weight glossy gelatin silver print still photo, USA. Edward G. Robinson, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., dir: Mervyn LeRoy; Warner Bros. The famous granddaddy of gangster films which began a series of violent and adult-themed gangster films during the early talkie/Pre-Code era. Though a warning appeared at the top of the film, the producers painted a rather flashy picture of the gangster life in what was then the height of both the Depression and Prohibition. Gangster Rico (Little Caesar) does pay with his life in the end, though. The film is most famous for Robinson's final line. In this atmospheric still we not only see Robinson pointing his pistol, but one being pointed at him in shadow. The pointing of guns would be forbidden in stills a few years later when the stringent Production Code began. Still is coded LC PUB-A55. Minor creasing at corners only. ABOUT FINE

One of 380 numbered copies on handmade paper, signed by the author, "and containing two specially designed and hitherto unpublished alphabets by the Author". Born in 1864, William Graily Hewitt was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1899 he attended Edward Johnston's evening classes at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and was rapidly brought in to teach there, and at Camberwell School of Art, when Johnston gave up due to pressure of work (1901). Graily Hewitt taught at the Central School until c.1930. He published in tandem with Johnston in the early years of the century and collaborated with other scribes and illuminators throughout his life. Graily Hewitt and Ida Henstock worked together on the Book of Subscribers to the Bodleian Appeal (1949) and Graily Hewitt collaborated with many private presses as a decorator. His many publications on handwriting and type design appeared from 1915 to 1943, his work is in the Victoria and Albert Museum's collection and he was one of the original members of the book and printing circle, the Double Crown Club.

Shell Motor Tours. A complete guide to the best and most interesting provincial and desert routes in Egypt.

Cairo: Shell Company and the Royal Automobile Club of Egypt, 1930 - Octavo. Original card wrappers printed in red and black. A little rubbed and soiled on the wrappers, light marginal toning, overall very good. First edition, extremely uncommon early moto-tourist handbook for Egypt, with no copies traced in libraries. Tours are listed with Cairo and Alexandria as starting points, beginning with 50-mile round trips, such as Cairo to the pyramids at Saqqara, and extending to considerably longer journeys, including Cairo to Luxor and Alexandria to the isolated Siwa Oasis: testament to a time when Egypt was perhaps more easily navigable than it is today. Routes are meticulously described and the notes pages are filled with detailed itineraries in manuscript, not limited to Egypt but also including routes to Jerusalem and Petra.         A Map of Berkeley, Oakland, & Alameda. Pictorial envelope title:This is a Section of the Map of Alameda County showing Some of the Early Histories of Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda and Environs with Special References to the Flora & Fauna of this most colorfu

Berkeley, CA. The Sather Gate Book Shop. No date. Ca. 1930? Color pictographic / pictorial map poster, 34 1/2 by 42 3/4 inches folding, professionally mounted on linen. Infill painting of little loss at fold intersections, infill of pinhole at each corner, only visible on the closest of inspections. Bright and clean. Together with the COLOR PICTORIAL ENVELOPE into which the poster was originally folded (tears and little paper loss to edges). Fabulous Art Deco style map by Michael Baltekal Goodman, notable for its brilliant color and striking design. The minimalist design of the street layout at the centre of the map is in stark contrast to the blue pattern of the sea at lower left and the rich greens, reds and oranges of the inland area at upper right. The names of several of the main streets are featured in scrolls, also historical events and important places such as Oakland Municipal Airport. Many buildings are featured in elevations; meanwhile vessels, ancient and contemporary, sail the harbour. Wind cherubs at the corners hark back to ancient maps as does the mythical sea creature at lower right. In the elaborate border are vignette images of historial events. The map was produced in collaboration with Eugene (Eugen) Neuhaus, the California painter and teacher. At the centre of the upper border a quotation proclaims the glory of San Francisco in the westward push of the nation: the best is last; it seems likely that the artist mapmaker had the intention of making this map of San Francisco the most glorious in scale and color of the several maps of American cities that had been published in the late 1920s under the influence of MacDonald Gill's Wonderground map.

        Gulliver's Travels.

London: Cresset Press, 1930. Three quarto volumes. From an edition of 205 copies, this is one of ten printed on Roman vellum. With twelve hand-colored copper-engraved illustrations by Rex Whistler, nine engraved head- and tailpieces, and five maps. Also with an extra suite of all the engravings laid into a single volume, each signed by Whistler and individually matted. Whistler's skills as a theater designer and as a muralist align in this work, which is widely regarded as his masterpiece, as well as a highspot of 20th century fine printing. Viewing these finely detailed engravings on vellum lends them a dimensionality that cannot be found in the issue on paper. Bound in original full tan morocco by the Wood bindery. Some natural tonal variations to the vellum internally. A fine set of Whistler's most important illustrated text in the rare vellum issue. Housed in two brown, morocco-backed folding cases. Modern Library 100, 23. Fine The 42nd Parallel, first novel in the trilogy, "opens at the dawn of a new century, and introduces both the formal divisions?Newsreel, Camera Eye, biographies, and narratives?as well as many of the characters that reappear throughout all three sections of this monumental work of American modernism. . . . track[ing] the struggles and successes of its five principle characters across an enormous geographic landscape, from the bustling urban space of New York and Chicago, past glimpses at the life of migrant labor in Middle America, to the tumultuous politics of Mexico City. According to Michael Denning, the title refers to 'an 1865 book, American Climatology, which suggested that North American storms followed the 42nd Parallel,' and the 'novel seemed to follow its characters as if they were so many storms crossing the continent.' . . . [Denning] also points out the fateful timeline for Dos Passos' completion and publication of The 42nd Parallel. Dos Passos finished work on the first volume 'a few weeks before the Wall Street crash,' and the book 'appeared in February 1930.' . . . The 42nd Parallel therefore ends on a narrative precipice for the novel as a whole: the horror of World War I looms on U.S.A's horizon, just as the collapse of the market economy begins to influence its composition. . . . Largely a novel of World War I, 1919 swings on what Denning calls 'the irony of apparent victory, of winning the war and losing the peace.' . . . As he does throughout U.S.A., Dos Passos intersperses his 'Camera Eye,' 'Newsreel,' and biographic sections within more traditional third person narratives. . . . In The Big Money, America rides the booms and busts of the 1920s towards the close of a tumultuous decade, the looming abyss of the Great Depression, and the novel's final vision of a divided nation. . . . If Denning is correct in contending that 'U.S.A. is no longer a contemporary novel? It is an epitaph for an America that no longer exists,' the problem of political classes, of a divided American nation surely endures.'"         Invitation to his Daughter's Wedding to Rene Hague.

Single large folio sheet on which is mounted the invitation printed in Joanna with a calligraphed slip by Eric Gill mounted above "The Bride and Bridegroom". A very rare Gill piece using the engraving "Christ as Minister". It is likely that only a handful of these invitations have survived. The calligraphed slip may have been a place setting for the reception which Rene or Joanna Hague then mounted with the invitation as a momento of their happy day.

        Japanese Votive Slips Album...

Dates of the slips range from late Edo to early Showa periods (1860s - 1930s. Thick accordion style album of 145 Japanese senjya fuda ??? [lit. thousand shrines slips] or n?satsu ?? [literally votive slips] laid down on to the folded leaves of this attractive album. Slips are all in very good to excellent conditions. Patterned cloth covered boards. 19 x 13cm. A lovely collection beautifully presented. The very old custom of printing votive slips began when visitors to a shrine or a Buddhist temple stuck a paper slip with his/her name and address onto the building in commemoration of their visit, as well as in the hope of getting a divine favour. This custom became very popular in the mid-Edo period and the style of paper slips gradually changed from hand-written slips to colourful woodcut print votive slips. Shops as well as individuals came to produce decorative votive slips, and in the case of the slips printed by shops, they functioned as advertisements. As the votive slips became elaborate, they also became collectors' items. The majority of the slips in this album bear the names of shops and companies in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, there are a number of restaurants including many sushi shops, sweet shops [One such shop, Kohagi-do ??? in Shinbashi was in business until very recently), a kimono shop, a printing shop, a book shop [Hiroo Shoten ????? in Osaka which is still trading], a doll makers, and a fish shop.Another theme within the album are the very interesting slips printed by such individuals as: Hagino Ky?koku???? (Confucian scholar known for his eccentricity, 1717?-1817), Ichieisai Yoshitsuya ????? (ukiyo-e artist, 1822-66), Sany?tei Eny? ????? (rakugoka [comic storyteller], Ozawa Ichikawazu ???? (collector of items related to frogs, 1876-1960), Kawamura Meroji ????? (visual artist and cat lover, 1886-1959), and Nakamura Shikan ???? (Kabuki actor, 1831-99 [for Shikan IV] and 1866-1944 [for Shikan V]). Two slips depict westerners, one is named "Smith" and the other "Read". One slip says "Beikoku ofuda hakase [American expert on votive slips] jutay? ?????????". "Jutay?" was probably being the Japanese name of the American. The collection includes many large-size slips, most of which used the compositions of earlier ukiyo-e prints. A perfect example of this are the last thirty-five large-size slips which partially used the compositions of the series called Edo-no-hana meish?-e ??????? [Flowers of Edo: Paintings of Scenic Places] in the late Edo period. These votive slips are artistically charming and some have bold designs. There is one double leaf slip which shows a horse and was printed by T?to N?satsukai ????? [Tokyo Votive Slip Association].Over the years it has become very fashionable to produce elaborate votive slips and for collectors to meet and exchange them. Since the early 19th century through to today there have been regular meetings, n?satsukai ???, for collectors to exchange votive slips. These charming slips remain popular with collectors even today. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 157341)....

        Soldiers' Pay [Dennis Wheatley's copy]

First Edition London Chatto & Windus 1930 First Impression (no further printings noted), one of only 2000 copies of the author's first title published in the United Kingdom, with preface by Richard Hughes (who wrote "A High Wind in Jamaica" and, incidentally, helped launch Faulkner in England). 8vo: xii,326,[6, including four pages of publisher's advertisements]pp. Publisher's coarsely woven aquamarine cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge stained aquamarine, bottom edge uncut; cream-colored dust dust jacket printed in red and black, priced 7s/6d. Dennis Wheatley's copy, with his bookplate on front paste down. Top edge spotted, others lightly browned, otherwise about Fine, square and tight, in better than Near Fine jacket, the spine dust-soiled and a bit darkened, edges lightly rubbed and nicked. Petersen A2.14. Fine- In 1925, Faulkner moved to New Orleans where he joined a literary circle centered on Sherwood Anderson and was introduced to the modernist innovations of T. S. Eliot and James Joyce. His interest in experimental writing was piqued, and he began a novel, his first, Soldier's Pay, portraying the tragic homecoming of a wounded war hero. Though set in Georgia, it was, nonetheless, a kind of rehearsal for the later Mississippi novels, full of despair and "mythic motifs of impotence and futile love." (The Literary Encyclopedia) Wheatley's stylish thrillers and occult novels made him one of the world's best-selling writers from the 1930s through the 1960s. His Gregory Sallust series was a key inspirations for Ian Fleming's James Bond stories. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. A little oxidation causing mirroring at the edges of some images and some fading, one photograph creased but generally the photographs are in good condition. One leaf loosening and the margins of another creased in neither case affecting the image. These photographs appeared in the journal published by Ato Inga Kyokai.Albums of Ato Inga Kyokai's photographs are uncommon and this album is particularly unusual. It appears that this compilation of photographs may have been ordered by the original owner to match their own interest as there are a large number of images of Shanxi Province. Sixty-two images are of Shanxi Province with another 40 images of Chinese subjects although their location is not specified. The subjects covered in this interesting album include portraits and scenes showing farmers, workers and a number of striking landscapes. The few albums of Ato Inga Kyokai's photographs which we have been able to locate, held by the University of Kyoto and the Diet Library in Tokyo, include some but not all of the photographs in this collection, a number of these photographs we have not been able to find in any collection. The photographs we have traced were all published in the period from 1922 to 1928. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 150082)....
