        Kits and Cats

London: Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd., 1930. Some of the Very Best Full Color Plates from the Master of Feline Illustration One of The Rarest of all The Louis Wain Books WAIN, Louis. Kits and Cats. [Shape Book]. Father Tuck's Hurrah Series No. 9080. London: Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd., n.d., ca. 1930. First edition. Folio (15 x 7 7/8 inches; 383 x 200 mm.). 12 pp. Four magnificent full-color, full-page illustrations and eight text pages with wonderful black and white illustrations. 'Shaped' stiff pictorial wrappers with two fine full-color illustrations. Very slight wear to board edges, small water-stain to inside edges of wrappers. Still a remarkable copy of a very scarce Louis Wain book rarely seen in any condition. In over fifty years of dealing in children's illustrated books we have only seen this title once before. The Stories: With Louis Wain in Pussyland Anxious Rooks Fuzzy's Failure Paying The Bill Supper-Time How Paulina Took The Ducklings Out The Black Intruder A Nasty Tumble The Punishment We Are Seven Glee According to Rodney Dale, the title Kits and Cats was originally published in 1904 (Dale, 95) by Raphael Tuck in the "Little Pets" series (No. 8838). This book was smaller in size, was not 'shaped' and contained completely different stories and pictures. Dale, 96.

        The Yorkshire Moorland Murder

Alfred A. Knopf and Longmans, Green and Co New York and Toronto 1930 - First Canadian Edition (in correct Knopf issued First American Edition dustjacket). M. dustjacket art. Very scarce Fletcher title and biblio-mystery. "Would anyone commit violent murder for one musty old book? A famous American book collector, his body a mass of battered flesh, was found at the bottom of Harlesden Scar on the lonely Yorkshire moors." As the novel progresses, it becomes clear that Dr. Essenheim was murdered shortly after having purchased a first edition of Pilgrim's Progress and a medieval book of hours, both of which were missing when the body was found. In one of his Saturday Evening Post articles, Dr. Abraham Simon Wolf Rosenbach claimed that Essenheim was based on him, an homage which the mystery-loving Dr. Rosenbach enjoyed. Almost Near Fine, hint of a splash stain to spine, very mild cocking in nearly Very Good dustjacket, dime sized chip at lower spine end and lower front panel, some tiny edge chips, couple square inch sized light stain at mid rear panel, split along rear spine edge (mended at verso with archival tape).         Photograph album documenting the fur trading and whaling voyages of Captain Christian Theodore Pedersen

California, Alaska, Canada, and the Arctic, 1930. Good to Very Good. This 10" x 6.5" album contains 54 photographs documenting whaling, hunting, and fur-trading in the Arctic. The first 37 photographs have typed captions. A second grouping of 15 photos is captioned in a female hand, probably Mrs. Pedersen's. Two photographs accompany a letter mailed by Mrs. Pedersen to a friend in New Jersey. The album photos have been glued in place and are in nice shape. Newspaper clippings about the Pedersen's rescue of stranded Inuits and a feature story on Mrs. Pedersen headlined "White Woman Farthest in Arctic Zone" are in the rear. The album is missing most of its front cover; the binding cord is present and the album pages are in place however most of their binding holes have been torn. The first group of photos show walrus hunting, whale bombing and processing, polar bears, Roald Amundsen, Inuits, the Pedersens, blasting through ice packs, the Herschel Island settlement including warehouses owned by the Pedersens, and Vilhjalmur Stefansson's camp at Bank's Island. Ship photos include Patterson, Lady Kindersley, Maud, Nanuk, and Nigalik. Similar, but different images are in the second group of photos. The two laid in photographs are of a fox farm, the couple established on Rat Island (now Howadax Island), Alaska. The Pedersens were well-known among mariners sailing the Arctic waters during the first forty years of the 20th century. C. T. Pedersen began his whaling career in 1903 at the age of 17 he was captaining vessels. In 1914, he signed on with the H. Liebes, a San Francisco furrier, and began making annual whaling and trading trips on the company's schooner, Herman. After marrying May Olive Jordan in 1921, the couple made the annual sailings together, and Mrs. Pedersen, a former nurse, provided medicine and health care to Inuits at their stops. The Pedersens went into business for themselves in 1923 and continued their arctic voyages until 1938 when they retired from the sea to become full-time fur-traders. The Pedersen's produced at least three sets of the first collection of 37 photographs. A complete set is in the Henry Asbjorn Larsen fonds at the Library and Archives Canada, and a partial set is held in the Wood Family fonds at the Glenbow Museum. As of 2017 no other examples of the other photographs are located by OCLC. No similar albums are in the trade, and ABPC and the Rare Book Hub show no auction records for other Pederson materials.

THE TRAGEDIE OF HAMLET PRINCE OF DENMARKE

Weimar: Cranach Press, 1930. No. 100 OF 300 COPIES on handmade paper specially produced for the press (along with 15 on Japanese paper and seven on vellum). 362 x 241 mm. (14 1/4 x 9 1/2"). 186, [2] pp. No. 100 OF 300 COPIES on handmade paper specially produced for the press (along with 15 on Japanese paper and seven on vellum). Original cloth-backed paper boards, edges untrimmed, with the bound notes by John Dover Wilson in the rear pocket, as issued. In the (slightly worn) original cardboard slipcase. Illustrated throughout with woodcuts in the text by Edward Gordon Craig. Printed in red and black. Ransom, p. 253; "A Century for the Century" 21. Two short light scratches to lower cover, one tiny marginal smudge, otherwise A SPLENDID COPY, in as close to original condition as one is likely to find. Undertaken in what Franklin calls "a perfectionist spirit," this book brings together the most glittering names in English and German private printing at the time. In addition to the presence of the woodcuts by Craig, the typographical arrangement of the volume was done by Count Harry Kessler; the title was cut by Eric Gill; the type (in 18, 12, and 10 point black letter) was designed by Edward Johnston (after that used by Fust and Schoeffer in their Mainz Psalter of 1457) and was cut by Edward Prince, completed after his death by G. T. Friend; and the paper was made by a process devised jointly by Kessler and Aristide and Gaspard Maillol. Franklin says that "anybody who examines the Cranach Press 'Hamlet' must agree it is worthy of its reputation. The paper, superficially like Bachelor's Kelmscott, seems softer and more friendly, appropriate for the expressionist style of Craig's woodcuts. . . . These designs, and Gill's in the Golden Cockerel Chaucer, form the bravest artistic adventure among all private press books." The Cranach Press Hamlet is a sought-after book, and one seldom encounters in the marketplace a copy in its original boards in the near mint state seen here, especially with the easily soiled binding so remarkably well preserved.         Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

Second Edition (Corrected Impression of the First Edition). Octavo. 211 pages. Original Hardcover. A rare, crisp example of the corrected 1930 version of Tolkien and Gordon's edition of the great Middle English Poem, Sir Gawain. The book is squarely bound in the original publisher's cloth with gilt decoration internally a little browning to pages. The ownership signature of 'D Rose 1936' appears on the first blank with further ink annotation to the text in the same hand. A very nice copy. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (Middle English: Sir Gawayn and e Grene Kny?t) is a late 14th-century Middle English chivalric romance. It is one of the best known Arthurian stories, with its plot combining two types of folklore motifs, the beheading game and the exchange of winnings. The Green Knight is interpreted by some as a representation of the Green Man of folklore and by others as an allusion to Christ. Written in stanzas of alliterative verse, each of which ends in a rhyming bob and wheel, it draws on Welsh, Irish and English stories, as well as the French chivalric tradition. It is an important poem in the romance genre, which typically involves a hero who goes on a quest which tests his prowess, and it remains popular to this day in modern English renderings from J. R. R. Tolkien, Simon Armitage and others, as well as through film and stage adaptations. It describes how Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur's Round Table, accepts a challenge from a mysterious "Green Knight" who challenges any knight to strike him with his axe if he will take a return blow in a year and a day. Gawain accepts and beheads him with his blow, at which the Green Knight stands up, picks up his head and reminds Gawain of the appointed time. In his struggles to keep his bargain Gawain demonstrates chivalry and loyalty until his honour is called into question by a test involving Lady Bertilak, the lady of the Green Knight's castle. The poem survives in a single manuscript, the Cotton Nero A.x., which also includes three religious narrative poems: Pearl, Purity and Patience. All are thought to have been written by the same unknown author, possibly Cameron of Sutherland, dubbed the "Pearl Poet" or "Gawain Poet", since all four are written in a North West Midland dialect of Middle English (Wikipedia)

        Designs for Stained Glass Window

England, 1930. 4 vols. Ink and watercolor on paper. Unframed, matted. Very good. 4 vols. Ink and watercolor on paper. Four Ecclesiastical Watercolor Drawings. Four stained glass designs by John Hardman & Co., formerly part of Hardman, Powell & Co. The company reached great popularity in the Victorian period making ecclesiastical fittings and ornaments for churches throughout England. The firm's interest in Gothic Revival led them to stained glass production in the late 1800s in which they then produced windows for churches around the world. These cartoons of windows are finely detailed showing the wide ranges of colors used in production. The two larger cartoons are annotated to indicate corrections of specific color choices.

Weimar: Printed by Count Harry Kessler at the Cranach Press,, 1930. Edited by J. Dover Wilson Litt.D. from the text of the second quarto printed in 1604?5 'according to the true and perfect coppie'. With which are also printed the Hamlet stories from Saxo Grammaticus and Belleforest and English translations therefrom. Illustrated by Edward Gordon Craig. Folio. Bound for the publisher by W. H. Smith & Son Ltd in red levant morocco, spine with seven raised bands, gilt-lettered in first and last compartments, compartments, sides, board-edges and turn-ins with single gilt rules, four gilt dots to headcaps, morocco inner hinges, edges rough-gilt. With an accompanying portfolio of red levant morocco, flat spine gilt-lettered direct, sides with single gilt rule around, plush-lined, cream ties (torn and re-tied), housing three extra sets of 51 loose proofs on vellum, cream Japanese tissue and yellow Japanese tissue, all but the first cream Japanese tissue proof signed in pencil by the artist. Title cut by Eric Gill, printed in red and black, wood-engraved illustrations designed and cut by Edward Gordon Craig, two with additional colour, type designed by Edward Johnston, headlines, colophon, and occasional headings printed in red. Fine condition. With the original printed prospectus, the lower third torn away, laid in. First edition in English, copy B of seven copies printed on vellum, with three extra sets of loose proofs signed by the artist, marked A to G. This is the most luxurious presentation of one of the most remarkable printed books of the 20th century. There were also printed for sale 15 copies on imperial Japanese paper with one set of loose proofs signed by the artist, numbered I to XV, and 300 copies on handmade paper. In 1912 Count Harry Kessler commissioned Edward Gordon Craig to illustrate an edition of Hamlet, to be printed at his private Cranach Press using the woodblocks of Craig's "black figures" and with specially-designed type. Work on it was suspended during the First World War and Craig became distracted by other projects so the book was not issued for nearly twenty years, the German edition in 1929 and the English in 1930, the latter with some additional engravings. When it finally appeared it was a masterpiece of printing and design, and one which visually captured many of Craig's ideas for the theatre with its "screens" or "scenery" formed by blocks of engraved lines and simple draped figures in different sizes creating theatrical space. Craig's son, Teddy, went to Weimar to assist the master-printer, Gage Cole, in the printing of the woodblocks: "I was the only person who knew how to get the kind of impression required, showing the delicate side grain of wood and at the same time producing the specially blackened details in certain blocks" (Edward Craig. Gordon Craig: The Story of His Life p. 326). According to the colophon, the type fount, designed by Edward Johnston, was based on that "used by Fust and Schoeffer in their Mainz Psalter of 1457." In fact, the model was the 1462 Bible fount of Fust and Schoeffer, modified with roman capitals. The levant morocco binding was entrusted to the W. H. Smith bindery, executed to a design which harks back to the work of the Doves Bindery in Hammersmith, where Douglas Cockerell, who supervised W. H. Smith's bindery from 1904 to 1914, had learned his trade. The three suites are on vellum, on an unbleached handmade paper stock produced by Gustave Maillol, and on a yellow-stained variant of that stock. Each suite contains the same 51 illustrations selected from the total number of 80, and each is signed by Craig (all except the first of the white paper proofs, accidentally overlooked). The vellum suite contains a larger unused version of the masked figure that appears on page 64 of the book, while the published engraving is included in the two paper suites. A number of the scenes and figures have contrasting black and grey tones produced from the same block. This effect is particularly successful on the fine paper used for the suites. The original printed prospectus promised eight copies on vellum, and an eighth copy was in fact printed, marked out of series and retained by Count Harry Kessler. That copy later belonged to the collector Professor Arnold Rood, who donated his Edward Gordon Craig collection to the V&A. It was not bound in the original red levant by the W. H. Smith bindery, but in crushed olive-brown morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe and signed by Edward Gordon Craig in 1961. It was sold at auction at Sotheby's New York, 2 June 1995, for $74,000. That is the only comparable sale record, as no other numbered copy of the deluxe issue on vellum has appeared at auction since first publication.

Hector; la novela de ambiente Mexico

Marpha, TX: the author, 1930. 377p., first edition, original wrappers rebound in waterstained boards, some loss of sizing and mildew stain, textblock also slightly affected. No mustiness. (Original cover illustration is bound in, green and red on coated white paper, in which the title lettering drips like blood onto roses growing in a cactus wilderness.). Gram is the pseudonym of David G. Ramirez, a Mexican priest who lived in San Antonio during the Cristero War for a decade starting around 1925. One of the rarest titles in Mexican American literature because of the imprint. We would not be surprised if the imprint were faked, and the book was actually published in northern Mexico, unlike subsequent editions.
