        My Early Life.

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited,, 1930. A Roving Commission. Octavo. Original dark pink cloth, title gilt to spine and front board, publisher's device and broad single rules to covers in blind, bottom edge untrimmed. Housed in a custom quarter morocco solander box and chemise. Photographic frontispiece and 15 plates of which 12 from photographs, folding map, 8 maps and 2 plans to the text. Spine faded and lightly spotted, short nicks to head of each joint, tips very lightly rubbed and bumped, very faint scattered marking to covers, small superficial scrape to front, contents toned, a few spots to edges, prelims, and index leaves. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, second state. Presentation copy, inscribed by Churchill six days before publication "To Leslie from Winston, Oct. 14. 1930" on the initial blank, with the armorial bookplate of Leonie Leslie, Churchill's maternal aunt, to the front pastedown, though the form of address suggests that the recipient was in fact her son Shane Leslie (1885-1975), Churchill's cousin and close friend since childhood, despite more than ten years' age difference: in 1890 Churchill's family acquired Banstead, a country house near Newmarket, where Winston and his brother Jack constructed a small fort known as the "Den", assisted by Shane and other children (Gilbert I p. 99). At Cambridge Leslie fervently embraced Roman Catholicism and Irish nationalism, so "Churchill, who was in favour of home rule, showed interest in Leslie's political views and introduced him to John Redmond, leader of the Irish nationalists in the House of Commons. Inspired by Redmond, Shane agreed to stand for Londonderry as a nationalist in the 1910 election. He narrowly lost the seat and set off to raise interest in the Gaelic movement in America where he worked with Bourke Cockran the Irish orator, who was a friend of Churchill's" (ODNB). Leslie went on to become a prolific biographer, novelist, and poet, and the summer after My Early Life was published he helped Churchill with the research for Marlborough (Gilbert V, p. 511). A suitably intimate familial association for Churchill's first work of extended biography.

A Map of the Bermuda Islands. The Sommer Ilands. Ia des Demonios Isles of the Devils.

Elizabeth Shurtleff and Helen F. McMillin. 1930. Color pictorial / pictographic map, 25 x 35 1/4 inches, originally folded, now professionally mounted on linen, minimising wear along upper part of left and upper centre fold line. A stunning pictorial map poster of the tropical isles of Bermuda. The decorative border features the fish and seaweeds of the tropical waters; the seas surrounding the islands are full of sailing vessels old and new as well as mythical creatures. At upper right the Graf Zeppelin is pictured at Murray's Anchorage; the pilot peers out with the question (contained in a speech bubble) "Mir ist als ob ich etwas rieche! Kann es zwiebeln sein? Ya, das ist Bermuda." ("I smell something! Can it be onions? Yup, that's Bermuda") Little pictographs indicate activities on shore. The inspiration of MacDonald Gill's Wonderground Map of London Town (1914) is evident in the speech bubbles containing quips and allusions.

[Children's Book Complete Manuscript Mock-up With Eleven Superb Full-Size Quarto Watercolor Illustrations] "De Brug Naar Elfenland"

Oblong quarto (13 x 10 inches). Color pictorial original watercolor illustration on card paper. An exceptionally beautiful and expertly illustrated children's book executed by the artist probably in the 1930's with full-size original watercolor title-page and ten full-size original watercolor illustrations accompanying and associated with the text, which is marvelously written out by hand, including vignettes and page numbering in red. To our knowledge, the book was never published, and we are unaware of the artist who produced this wonderful children's lap book. Near fine. Most scarce thus.

        DUDE WRANGLER, THE (1930)

Sono-Art 1930 - Vintage original 21 ½ x 14" (54.6 x 35.5 6 cm.) window card poster, USA. Lina Basquette, George Duryea, dir: Richard Thorpe; Sono-Art. An obscure romantic comedy from the early talking film era, about an effeminate young man who prefers to spend his time working on embroidery, and whose girlfriend (who breeds polo ponies) schemes to make a man of him. The film, which was released by a very small studio, received on this poster artwork which was obviously intended to be funny eight decades ago, but which, with its very extreme sexual stereotyping, can only be seen in a radically different way. Paper from this film is terribly rare, and I have never seen anything else from this film. Backed with conservation paper, the poster has been professionally conserved with touch ups to address stains, etc., the paper exhibits some minor warping, VERY GOOD

        Album of Japanese Matchbox Labels

[1930s?]. Collection of over 280 matchbox labels laid down in an oblong album. Album measures 15 x 21.5cm. Some labels are torn with a little loss to corners and edges and there is some wear to others. An attractive album. The delightful images featured on these labels are largely advertisements of restaurants and cafés, but also featured are bars, drinks, a bank, barbers, pool halls, mah-jong parlour, petrol stations, inns, fruit shops, Western-style apparel and accessories shops, Shiseido, medicine, and so on. These businesses were located in Tokyo or the surrounding regions. Although none of the labels has a date, they are probably labels from the Taisho and early Showa Eras before the end of World War II. The kanji used in these labels is old one, which indicates that the labels were made before the end of the war. There are two labels advertising Showa Bank. This bank was established in 1927 after the Showa Financial Crisis to rescue depositors of and companies which had business relations with the failed banks. Showa Bank existed until 1944. There is one label advertising a movie, Tawamureni koi-ha sumaji ???????? (No Trifling with Love) which premiered in 1933. There are two labels advertising Kabuki plays at the Kabuki-za Theatre. One of them shows the play title, "It? Hirobimi to Li K?-sh???

Castle Gay. (A Dickson McCunn story)

London, Hodder and Stoughton. 1930. FIRST EDITION, with SIGNED loose letter. 8vo. Publisher's dark green cloth, some bumping to spine, corners showing the unmistakeable evidence of being found attractive to the rodentine palate which has affected both book cloth and wrapper though not severely to their detriment. Some foxing, to endpapers and edges, a little dusty on the top. Wrapper has some closed tears and creasing to the top edge of the rear panel. Unfaded and only lightly soiled, a respectable copy with a laid in letter in Buchan's trademark scrawl from Elsfield Manor, written on the 11th of January 1933 and mentioning a young lady, a time and a railway station with some reference to the weather. Undoubtedly a code and almost certainly requiring the immediate attention of the Gorbals Die-Hards.

        The World in 2030 A.D.

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1930. Quarto, with a frontispiece and eight plates. First edition of this extravagant vision of the future. The first Earl of Birkenhead (1872-1930) was a dashing figure, a 'swashbuckler' and 'ready subject for the caricaturist,' (DNB) who had a lengthy career as Solicitor General, and after 1919, Lord Chancellor.Reading The World in 2030 the knowledge that Birkenhead was drinking himself to death whilst writing comes as little surprise. It is an extraordinary work, displaying the occasional prescience of the unhinged. Amongst a very odd collection of statements about ectogenesis, the unlikelihood of future wars due to trans-national integration, scientific relativism, and the creation of a Florida-style 'playground for all Europe' in the basin of the Sahara, there is the bald announcement that atomic energy will be harnessed, that eugenics will be commonplace and the genes mapped, and that a 'mad dictator, jealous of Western progress, may precipitate a war, which will finally burn up and destroy Western civilisation'. Best of all, advances in television will mean that a busy Englishman will be able to follow 'an Australian test-match'.Accompanying the work are nine futurist plates by E. McKnight Kauffer. A fine copy in the original black cloth, lettered in crimson.
