        The Blue Angel

Readers Library Publishing Co London [1930] - First English Edition and First Photoplay Edition (and first to use the title The Blue Angel, after the German Edition of 1905, titled Professor Unrat, and preceding the 1932 Jarrolds printing). Plug for the Ufa Wardour Picture [Josef von Sternberg direction] starring Emil Jannings and a young Marlene Dietrich at title page and rear jacket panel (no stills issued in this printing). Dietrich was catapulted to stardom by this film. An extremely scarce edition. Near Fine in Very Good dustjacket, nicked at top spine end and flap corners, short closed tear at top rear panel is mended at verso with scotch tape.         Twenty Poems.

Oxford: Basil Blackwell, [1930] - Small duodecimo, pp. 24. Original paper wrappers, sewn as issued, front wrapper lettered in black, fore edge and bottom edge uncut. Slight tanning to wrappers, some gentle rubbing and creases to extremities, an excellent copy. First edition, presentation copy, out-of-series from the total edition of 135 copies, of which 75 only were numbered and signed, inscribed by the author to the American novelist and essayist "Julien Green, with the compliments and good wishes of the writer. June 1930." Here Spender begins to make connections with the European literati (Green spent most of his time in Paris) with whom he and Auden would mingle in the coming decade. This, the author's second book, was published while Spender was a student at Oxford: it was well received and prompted T. S. Eliot to invite Spender to contribute to The Criterion.       Diessen: Roving Eye Press, 1930 - Octavo. Original purple paper wrappers, titles in gilt to front cover. Spine sunned and rubbed at edges of spine, creasing to tips, lower edge a little dusty, smudge to ink p. 43; a very good copy. First and sole edition of this book of poems, which are listed as "Stops" alphabetically by location. Roving Eye Press was initially founded in the late 1920s by Bob Brown and co-managed by his wife Rose. It was part of a larger literary and artistic movement of small presses that served the modernist avant-garde, including Nancy Cunard's Hours Press. Cunard described Brown as, "at the very centre of his time, a zeitgeist in himself" (Saper p. 179). Roving Eye Press was mobile in both geography (moving with Brown from the spa town Bad-Ems, Germany, to Cagnes-sur-mer, France, and much later, in the 1950s, to New York City) and scope (publishing art, poetry, political pamphlets and even cookbooks).

London; (1930): Faber and Faber Limited. First Edition. Octavo. 306pp. illustrated. While there have been several books written about Whistler, including the most noteworthy by the Pennells. The present volume is a study of the complex and fascinating personality of a man who was also a distinguished artist. Many could not capture his personality so, the author makes an attempt to present him (like one of his own pictures) bathed in the appropriate atmosphere and the proper distance inside the frame. There were those who disliked both he and his work and others who adored him. A fine copy beautiful bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in full tan polished calf, centrally stamped in gilt, title and board edges gilt raised bands, double green morocco gilt and compartments, turn-ins and all edges gilt, decorative endpapers housed in a slipcase matching the endpapers. A few small speckles to labels, a superb copy.

One of 150 copies printed for private circulation, this offprint was Dodgson's serious attempt to discredit vivisection, published in the June 1875 edition of the Fortnightly Review.       London: Chatto & Windus, 1930. - FIRST EDITION PRESENTATION COPY WITH A 50 LINE MANUSCRIPT POEM. 1 vol., inscribed on the front blank endleaf "For my Darling from her Blue. I suppose you do know-" May 28th. 1930." The following two pages Milne has neatly penned and signed nine original verses, comprising a total of fifty lines, each relating to nine of the characters in his play and the actors who created the roles on the London stage. Bound in the publisher's tan/gray cloth, original printed paper spine label, chipped affecting one word, very minor rubbing to head and foot of spine and back corners, inner and outer hinges fine, minor foxing to first and last leafs otherwise internally clean and bright. PROVENANCE: The present volume was previously part of The Roy Davids Collection of Poetical Manuscripts and was originally acquired by him directly from the Milne family without any intermediate ownership. The affectionate inscription from Milne to his wife can be explained by the close of Michael and Mary; in the play the character of Michael turns to Mary, mother of their son, David, and proclaims 'I suppose you do know, Mary, that, much as I love him, I love your little finger - your funny little finger, more than all of David?', Mary gently replying 'I think I did know, Michael. You've got a funny little finger too'. Michael and Mary is considered to be one of Milne's most successful light comedic dramas and is a play about marriage, raising issues regarding law, religion, morality and illegitimacy. The play was originally staged in New York before moving to London where it opened at the St. James's Theatre on 1st February 1930 and starred Herbert Marshall and Edna Best (themselves married from 1928-40, and also the couple to whom Milne dedicated the present book) in the title roles. A year later Michael Balcon produced a film version of the play, retaining the stage cast in their roles. It was the first of Marshall and Best's co-starring talkies and was voted the third best British movie of 1932. The poem reads in part: "Michael - Rowe played nightly by a Bart Steers his way into the heart Only Michael's Marshall carriage Pulls him through that risky marriage" (the role of Michael created by Herbert Marshall) "Mary - When I hear your "Don't you dare to Touch me" I can hardly bear to Sit in silence. I am dying To burst in upon you, crying Thank you, Edna, very much. You Angel, nobody can touch you" (the role of Mary created by Edna Best) "David - When all of us are dead and gone And even Frankie Lawton's old If actors still come "off" and "on" And tickets still are bought and sold "How good"¿thee¿will say "That fellow - can't remember nameses - "Did - you know - in that rotten play "By what's-it at the old St. James's" (the role of David created by Frank Lawton) "Inspector - The burglar, whether British born or foreign Never escapes Inspector Thatcher (Torin) If she's a female crook, Inspector Thatcher Can always be relied upon to catch her" (the role of the Inspector created by Torin Thatcher) "Price - A horrible villain was Price, I'm afraid With his record of marriages hastily made At a registry office, and vice-less And, though it sounds odd, I am bound to confess That in voice and department, in manners and dress The way that you played him was priceless" (the role of Harry Price created by D. A. Clarke Smith) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Les demi-vierges. Edition Définitive avec 16 illustrations de Gaston Fédit Gravées par Paul Baudier.

Paris, Hachette, 1930.
