        The Excursion to Tilsit

Horace Liveright New York 1930 - First American Edition. Sugar dustjacket art. Collection of four stories dealing with Lithuanian peasant life, superstitions, incantations, and even murder. The title story served as the basis for perhaps the most important production of Hollywood's silent era of cinema, Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, starring Janet Gaynor and George O'Brien and directed by German expressionist, F. W. Murnau. Long considered the greatest production of the silent movie era, it was the only film to win the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science's Best Picture award in the category of "Artistic Quality of Production". In 2007, the American Film Institute ranked this as the #82 Greatest Movie of All Time. The film was remade with less lyrical and more realistic tones, under the auspices of Nazi Germany, by Veit Harlan, in 1939. Ownership signature of Communist author, Conrad Komorowski. Near Fine in Very Good dustjacket, shallow chipping along top edge of jacket, centimeter sized chip at lower front panel, inch closed tear at top front panel. 0.0 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Limited Editions Club, Paris 1930 - Two quarto volumes (7-3/4" x 10-1/8") bound in pink Ingres paper wrappers. Introduction by Andrew Lang and illustrated with woodcuts by Frans Masereel. George Macy noted that upon reception of their copies, many members felt "cheated because the two volumes were paperbound. We had to bind in hard cases, American fashion, most of the copies." That said, of the approximately two dozen copies we have handled over the years, all but two were in their original paper wrappers, as is this copy. Of a total edition of 1500 copies SIGNED by the artist on the colophon page, this is one of only 15 Presentation Copies with the publisher's blindstamp attesting to such on the colophon page where the printed number "444" is struck through and "Office Copy" is handwritten. Acquired directly from the publisher's family. Mostly unopened. Some chipping and cracking to the paper spines, resulting in a bit of looseness to some signatures. Still Very Good in glassines with tears and a Near Fine later chemise and Very Good slipcase with a split, made for the publisher [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

On the Theory of Brownian Motion.

Lancaster: American Physical Society, 1930. First edition, offprint issue, of this important paper which introduced the 'Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.' Although its origins lay in statistical mechanics, this process has found a wide variety of applications, notably in mathematical finance. The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, also known as the 'Langevin equation' in the physics literature, was originally used to describe Brownian motion, the random motion of a small particle suspended in a fluid due to the collisions of the fluid molecules with the particle. Brownian motion is most simply modelled by the 'Wiener process', but this is unrealistic because it fails to take into account the viscosity of the fluid. The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process is a modification of the Wiener process, but allowing for a frictional drag on the particle proportional to its velocity, in accordance with Stokes's law. Over time, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process tends to drift towards its long-term average. Such 'mean-reverting' processes are naturally suited to modelling several situations in finance. For example, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process is used in the 'Vasicek model,' a mathematical model describing the evolution of interest rates. As opposed to stock prices, for example, interest rates cannot rise indefinitely: at very high levels they would hamper economic activity, prompting a decrease in interest rates. Similarly, interest rates cannot decrease below zero. As a result, interest rates tend to move in a limited range, showing a tendency to revert to a long term average value. Similarly, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process can be used to model the behaviour of commodity prices, since it embodies the economic argument that when prices are 'too high' demand will reduce and supply will increase, producing a counter-balancing effect. When prices are 'too low' the opposite will occur, again pushing prices back towards some kind of long term average. Leonard Ornstein (1880-1941) was a Dutch physicist who studied under Hendrik Antoon Lorenz at the University of Leiden, receiving a PhD on a problem in statistical mechanics. In 1914 Ornstein succeeded Peter Debye in the chair of theoretical physics at the University of Utrecht, and over the next three decades carried out important work in experimental atomic physics. The Dutch-American physicist George Uhlenbeck (1900-1988) studied under Paul Ehrenfest, receiving his PhD in 1927 for work on statistical methods in quantum theory. After spending eight years at the University of Michigan, in 1935 he moved to Utrecht to take up the chair vacated by Hendrik Kramers. Although most of his work was in statistical mechanics, he is perhaps best known today for his discovery in 1925 of electron spin, in collaboration with Samuel Goudsmit, another of Ehrenfest's students. Not in OCLC. Offprint from: Physical Review, vol. 36 (1930), pp. 823-841. Original printed self-wrappers, pp. 823-841 [1:blank], very fine.

Henry Holt and Co. New York (1930) - First Edition stated. Joaquin Vaquero dustjacket art and illustrations. Morand's impressions of New York are both positive and negative. He disapproves of the upper class, the fashion, speakeasies and the area around Times Square. He is impressed by the City Hall and the buildings around Washington Square, which he regards as genuinely American and not false imitations of historical styles. He makes recurring references to the contemporary saying that "the Jews own New York, the Irish run it, and the Negroes enjoy it". In his conclusion, he writes: "I love New York because it is the greatest city of the universe and because its people are the toughest, the only people who, after the war, went on building, and who do not merely live on the capital of the past, the only ones, besides Italy, who do not demolish but construct."       Philippines, 1930. Eighty-eight photographs of varying sizes, most approximately 3 x 5 inches. Black faux leather album, tied with cord. Photos in white corner mounts on black construction paper. With original tissue guards, of which the first three are detached and chipped. A few images slightly faded or with light soiling, but mostly clear and well developed. Very good. An outstanding album of eighty-eight photographs portraying native country life and showing scenes from the U.S. Army's Nichols Field outside of Manila during the 1920s and 1930s. The images of native Filipinos consist principally of individual and group portraits of men and women in traditional dress. There are a number of additional images showing agricultural activity, rural farm land, and animals. The second significant portion of the album contains images of Nichols Field, the American military base built near Manila in 1919. These photos depict indigenous people and American personnel in and around the airfield, along with several representations of military buildings, living quarters, army activity, airplanes, and other army matériel. A few other images of port activity and a photograph that captures an eruption of the Mayon volcano are also included. Well shot and well developed, the photographs in this album create a striking portrait of two vastly different modes of living during this period in Philippine history.
