TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY DANIEL C. BEARD AS CHIEF OF THE DAN BEARD OUTDOOR SCHOOL TO THE 17-YEAR OLD SCOUT SEYMOUR HALPERN, WHO WOULD LATER BE ELECTED TO THE U.S. CONGRESS.

Suffern, New York, September 22, 1930.. 1930.. Good. - Over 88 words typed on buff 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide "The Dan Beard Outdoor School" stationery with the names of the school's officers and its motto printed in green at the top and its eagle logo at the center. In his letter addressed to "Dear Scout Halpern", Daniel Carter Beard apologizes that while Seymour Halpern's letter has been found, the picture he'd included hasn't: "Your letter of June 23d was mislaid during the transfer of the office from here to camp and also the picture you sent was lost.... The Chief hopes the enclosed print [Not here present] taken at the Jamboree will take its place." Beard goes on to describe the accomplishments of Scouting. Signed "Daniel C. Beard / Chief". The edges of the page are slightly darkened and there are a few tiny chips to the edges with some minor creases and a couple of tiny chips out from the bottom corners and edge. Good. <p>The son of the artist James Henry Beard, Daniel Carter "Uncle Dan" Beard [1850-1941] was an American illustrator, author, youth leader and social reformer. He founded the Sons of Daniel Boone in 1905, which he later merged with the Boy Scouts of America. He wrote a series of articles for St. Nicholas magazine, which later became the basis of his book "The American Boy's Handy Book". A member of the Art Students League, he was a friend of Ernest Thompson Seton. As an artist, he illustrated several books for Mark Twain.<p>The Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation.

[SOVIET LEISURE TIME] Deshovoye dachnoye stroitel'stvo: S fotografiiami, risunkami i chertezhami [i.e. A Cheap Construction of Country Houses: With Photos, Drawings and Plans]

Moscow: Tsentrozhilsoiuz, 1930. 96 pp. 25,5x17,5 cm. Original illustrated wrappers. Tears of the spine, rubbed, owner's signature on the title page. Otherwise good. Very rare. One of 4000 copies. A great evidence of an important Soviet (and Russian) phenomenon - dacha (i.e. country house). This is the first Soviet work on the construction of country houses and organization of garden cooperatives. This was a reaction to a series of government regulations and documents on development of countryside gardens around cities of the late 1920s. The book describes the foreign experience in the construction of country houses and explains the importance of garden cooperatives for Soviet people. The edition illustrated with photographs of houses and garden furniture (even a photograph of a German 'family traveling by automobile with a tent, sleeping bags, folding table and stools, and a folding boat'), large number of plans. This edition was supposed to be used to build housed as it has detailed instructions. Private dacha in the USSR was not only a place of rest and an opportunity to provide itself with fruit vegetables for a whole year. It was considered a sign of prosperity in the Soviet Union. They appeared in the early 1930s and were small boardwalk or plywood country houses designed for summer living. In the USSR, as in pre-revolutionary Russia, country houses were often erected in one season, although their architecture has changed significantly. Cottages of the Soviet era more like a comfortable one-story huts (sometimes made of bricks) with a small (closed or open) veranda, fruit trees and beds. But in the Soviet Union there was also a «dacha aristocracy». So, already in the 1930s, there were dacha-building cooperatives, that is, departmental settlements for scientists, doctors, writers, employees of various state institutions. Dacha construction was at first, as a rule, restrictive: land plots of no more than 8 acres allocated in the suburban zone, were intended only for vegetable gardens. Then on sites it was allowed to build sheds for tools, and later - small unheated houses: first with an area of 16 square meters, and then up to 25 square meters. The second floors were forbidden. There was no electricity, no running water. The dachas were lit with kerosene lamps, food was cooked on a kerosene, and water was extracted in the nearest pond. But it is nevertheless interesting how the Soviet state tried to provide the builders of communism with summer and weekend rest. No copies found at Worldcat.

Horace Liveright New York 1930 - First American Edition. Sugar dustjacket art. Collection of four stories dealing with Lithuanian peasant life, superstitions, incantations, and even murder. W. Murnau. Long considered the greatest production of the silent movie era, it was the only film to win the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science's Best Picture award in the category of "Artistic Quality of Production". George Macy noted that upon reception of their copies, many members felt "cheated because the two volumes were paperbound. We had to bind in hard cases, American fashion, most of the copies." That said, of the approximately two dozen copies we have handled over the years, all but two were in their original paper wrappers, as is this copy. Of a total edition of 1500 copies SIGNED by the artist on the colophon page, this is one of only 15 Presentation Copies with the publisher's blindstamp attesting to such on the colophon page where the printed number "444" is struck through and "Office Copy" is handwritten.         On the Theory of Brownian Motion.

Lancaster: American Physical Society, 1930. First edition, offprint issue, of this important paper which introduced the 'Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.' Although its origins lay in statistical mechanics, this process has found a wide variety of applications, notably in mathematical finance. The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, also known as the 'Langevin equation' in the physics literature, was originally used to describe Brownian motion, the random motion of a small particle suspended in a fluid due to the collisions of the fluid molecules with the particle. Brownian motion is most simply modelled by the 'Wiener process', but this is unrealistic because it fails to take into account the viscosity of the fluid. The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process is a modification of the Wiener process, but allowing for a frictional drag on the particle proportional to its velocity, in accordance with Stokes's law. Over time, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process tends to drift towards its long-term average. Such 'mean-reverting' processes are naturally suited to modelling several situations in finance. For example, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process is used in the 'Vasicek model,' a mathematical model describing the evolution of interest rates. As opposed to stock prices, for example, interest rates cannot rise indefinitely: at very high levels they would hamper economic activity, prompting a decrease in interest rates. Similarly, interest rates cannot decrease below zero. As a result, interest rates tend to move in a limited range, showing a tendency to revert to a long term average value. Similarly, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process can be used to model the behaviour of commodity prices, since it embodies the economic argument that when prices are 'too high' demand will reduce and supply will increase, producing a counter-balancing effect. When prices are 'too low' the opposite will occur, again pushing prices back towards some kind of long term average. Leonard Ornstein (1880-1941) was a Dutch physicist who studied under Hendrik Antoon Lorenz at the University of Leiden, receiving a PhD on a problem in statistical mechanics. In 1914 Ornstein succeeded Peter Debye in the chair of theoretical physics at the University of Utrecht, and over the next three decades carried out important work in experimental atomic physics. The Dutch-American physicist George Uhlenbeck (1900-1988) studied under Paul Ehrenfest, receiving his PhD in 1927 for work on statistical methods in quantum theory. After spending eight years at the University of Michigan, in 1935 he moved to Utrecht to take up the chair vacated by Hendrik Kramers. Although most of his work was in statistical mechanics, he is perhaps best known today for his discovery in 1925 of electron spin, in collaboration with Samuel Goudsmit, another of Ehrenfest's students. Not in OCLC. Offprint from: Physical Review, vol. 36 (1930), pp. 823-841. Original printed self-wrappers, pp. 823-841 [1:blank], very fine.

Náraz: tvrtletník akademického spolku ve Vídni [NARAZ: a quarterly journal of the student community in Vienna]. Vol. II, nos. 1, 2, 3/4; vol. III, nos. 1, 2, 3/4, vol. IV, nos. 1/2, 3, 4 and special issue; vol. V, nos. 1/2, 3, 4

Lidová knihtiskárna Ant. Machát a spol, Vienna 1930 - Small quartos (ca. 25 × 19.5 cm each, last four issues 24 × 16 cm). Original decorative wrappers with an attractive understated typographic design that varies slightly through the years; ca. 24 pp. each. Advertisements. Very good condition throughout; occasional light wear to overlapping wrapper edges. Set of four complete yearly runs, as well as one special jubilee issue, of this undocumented Czech-language journal of the interwar Czech student community in Vienna, billed as the only independent Czech journal in Vienna. "Náraz" contains articles on the cultural and political interests of the Czech minority in Austria, reflections on student life and the life of the young generation in Vienna, as well as overviews of Czech modernist art and literature, and even occasional original poetry and prose. Some of the contributions also concern contemporary philosophy, such as the conflict between pragmatism and idealism. Of particular interest are the literary articles by Alexandr Hlin ný on Vitezslav Nezval's prose and on modernist Czech poetry. The authors of original poetry included in "Naraz" are Ji í Janou?ek, Václav Hrubý, K. J. Kraus, Alois Hoffmann, Jan Ho ký, Pavel Stránský, Miroslav Bidlas, and Maria Franzlová. The wrappers are illustrated with an appealing typographic design (unattributed) and each issue contains numerous advertisements of Czech businesses in Vienna, often set in appealing typography. Genuinely rare; not even held at the Czech National Library, KVK, OCLC only shows a single issue at Universitätsbibliothek Wien. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
