        Malý ernoch [The Little Negro]

circa 1930, [Brno] - Original woodcut print in black ink on translucent paper, affixed at top edge to cream-colored cardstock. Measures 24.5 cm x 26.5 cm (cardstock slightly larger). Signed, titled, and numbered (3/25) by the author on bottom edge. The image is a close-up of a black child in livery carrying a large glass on a salver. In the background, a small crowd, all facing away, is awash in the light of a chandelier.Helena Bocho áková-Dittrichová (1894-1980) was the first female wordless novelist, and the only woman to work in this medium during its heyday. She was born in the Moravian region of what is now the Czech Republic and spent most of her life in Brno, the Moravian capital. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and in 1923 received a government scholarship to study printmaking in Paris. Bocho áková-Dittrichová's unpublished wordless novel Malí ka Na Cestách [The Artist on Her Journey] recounts this period in her life. In Paris, she first encountered the wordless novels of Flemish artist Franz Masereel, the originator of the form, and was inspired to create her own. Over the course of her long career, Bocho áková-Dittrichová published several wordless novels, along with travelogues and historical works. She also worked as a printmaker and illustrator, and was highly regarded in her native land, though largely unknown elsewhere. This changed in 2014, when the National Museum of Women in the Arts held an exhibition of her work entitled "The First Woman Graphic Novelist: Helena Bocho áková-Dittrichová," and this important artist finally began to gain global recognition. Her work, however, is still not widely available. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Amish Love. Adventures in a Puritan Cult.

Florence, Italy: Michael Angelino Press, (c. 1930s). Small quarto. 264pp. With woodcut cover illustration and five erotic, half-tone reproductions of paintings by Mahlon Blaine. This book is part of the swelling trend in the 1930's for "privately printed" erotic books, which would often be published by anonymous or pseudonymous authors and illustrators and printed with fake publication information in order to protect the creators from public backlash. This erotic tale, supposedly taken from a diary of an Amish woman telling of the scandalous sexual exploits of her mother, is one such work. Blaine's stirring illustrations bring life to the text, combining sensual lines with cunning details. Both the cover, in Blaine's bold woodcut style, and the illustrations, with their broad washes over sketched lines, have a raw quality to them, a sense of hurried energy that echoes the excitement of the reader. Near fine in wrappers, with spotting, crease to front cover, and scratch to back. Blaine, whose most respectable and recognizable works were illustrations for Edgar Rice Burroughs, John Steinbeck, and the New Yorker, published over two thousand drawings between 1917 and his death in 1969. An interesting work from this underappreciated master. (Trenary, "Mahlon Blaine, One-Eyed Visionary," p. 59).

Excellent Autograph Letter Signed to Mlle Monteil (Virginia, 1882-1941, Novelist, Critic & Essayist)

1930 - a French writer who had written a sympathetic critical analysis of Mrs. Dalloway, she starts by saying that she well remembers meeting her last winter and goes on to thank her "for your very generous and what is better, highly intelligent study of Mrs. Dalloway. I am very grateful to you for the care and skill which you have spent on my work - it seems to me one of the subtlest & most interesting studies of it that I have read. No doubt you have praised it too highly - of that an author cannot judge -but to be praised for the qualities one had wished to possess is a great pleasure & a rare one. I am particularly interested that a French critic should be so sympathetic; my faults are those, I should have said, that your race most abominates .", 1 side 4to., 52 Tavistock Square, 14th July In Mrs. Dallloway, which was published in 1925, Woolf experimented with the stream-of-consciousness technique which she later perfected in To the Lighthouse (1927), Orlando (1928), and other novels.

With cordial good wishes. John J. Pershing."John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing was the most accomplished American soldier of WWI. Pershing’s charismatic personality and his extensive experience in prior military initiatives had made him the logical choice to command the Allied Expeditionary Force during World War I. After the Allied victory in 1918, Pershing emerged as the most celebrated American hero of the war. Congress honored him by creating a new rank, General of the Armies, and he later served as Chief of Staff from 1921 to 1926. ( - Sehr gut erhalten.         My Early Life.

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited,, 1930. A Roving Commission. Octavo. Original dark pink cloth, title gilt to spine and front board, publisher's device and broad single rules to covers in blind, bottom edge untrimmed. Housed in a custom quarter morocco solander box and chemise. Photographic frontispiece and 15 plates of which 12 from photographs, folding map, 8 maps and 2 plans to the text. Spine faded and lightly spotted, short nicks to head of each joint, tips very lightly rubbed and bumped, very faint scattered marking to covers, small superficial scrape to front, contents toned, a few spots to edges, prelims, and index leaves. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, second state. Presentation copy, inscribed by Churchill six days before publication "To Leslie from Winston, Oct. 14. 1930" on the initial blank, with the armorial bookplate of Leonie Leslie, Churchill's maternal aunt, to the front pastedown, though the form of address suggests that the recipient was in fact her son Shane Leslie (1885-1975), Churchill's cousin and close friend since childhood, despite more than ten years' age difference: in 1890 Churchill's family acquired Banstead, a country house near Newmarket, where Winston and his brother Jack constructed a small fort known as the "Den", assisted by Shane and other children (Gilbert I p. 99). At Cambridge Leslie fervently embraced Roman Catholicism and Irish nationalism, so "Churchill, who was in favour of home rule, showed interest in Leslie's political views and introduced him to John Redmond, leader of the Irish nationalists in the House of Commons. Inspired by Redmond, Shane agreed to stand for Londonderry as a nationalist in the 1910 election. He narrowly lost the seat and set off to raise interest in the Gaelic movement in America where he worked with Bourke Cockran the Irish orator, who was a friend of Churchill's" (ODNB). Leslie went on to become a prolific biographer, novelist, and poet, and the summer after My Early Life was published he helped Churchill with the research for Marlborough (Gilbert V, p. 511). A suitably intimate familial association for Churchill's first work of extended biography.

A Map of the Bermuda Islands. The Sommer Ilands. Ia des Demonios Isles of the Devils.

Elizabeth Shurtleff and Helen F. McMillin. 1930. Color pictorial / pictographic map, 25 x 35 1/4 inches, originally folded, now professionally mounted on linen, minimising wear along upper part of left and upper centre fold line. A stunning pictorial map poster of the tropical isles of Bermuda. The decorative border features the fish and seaweeds of the tropical waters; the seas surrounding the islands are full of sailing vessels old and new as well as mythical creatures. At upper right the Graf Zeppelin is pictured at Murray's Anchorage; the pilot peers out with the question (contained in a speech bubble) "Mir ist als ob ich etwas rieche! Kann es zwiebeln sein? Ya, das ist Bermuda." ("I smell something! Can it be onions? Yup, that's Bermuda") Little pictographs indicate activities on shore. The inspiration of MacDonald Gill's Wonderground Map of London Town (1914) is evident in the speech bubbles containing quips and allusions.

        Album of Japanese Matchbox Labels

[1930s?]. Collection of over 280 matchbox labels laid down in an oblong album. Album measures 15 x 21.5cm. Some labels are torn with a little loss to corners and edges and there is some wear to others. An attractive album. The delightful images featured on these labels are largely advertisements of restaurants and cafés, but also featured are bars, drinks, a bank, barbers, pool halls, mah-jong parlour, petrol stations, inns, fruit shops, Western-style apparel and accessories shops, Shiseido, medicine, and so on. These businesses were located in Tokyo or the surrounding regions. Although none of the labels has a date, they are probably labels from the Taisho and early Showa Eras before the end of World War II. The kanji used in these labels is old one, which indicates that the labels were made before the end of the war. There are two labels advertising Showa Bank. This bank was established in 1927 after the Showa Financial Crisis to rescue depositors of and companies which had business relations with the failed banks. Showa Bank existed until 1944. There is one label advertising a movie, Tawamureni koi-ha sumaji ???????? (No Trifling with Love) which premiered in 1933. There are two labels advertising Kabuki plays at the Kabuki-za Theatre. One of them shows the play title, "It? Hirobimi to Li K?-sh???
