Náraz: tvrtletník akademického spolku ve Vídni [NARAZ: a quarterly journal of the student community in Vienna]. Vol. II, nos. 1, 2, 3/4; vol. III, nos. 1, 2, 3/4, vol. IV, nos. 1/2, 3, 4 and special issue; vol. V, nos. 1/2, 3, 4

Lidová knihtiskárna Ant. Machát a spol, Vienna 1930 - Small quartos (ca. 25 × 19.5 cm each, last four issues 24 × 16 cm). Original decorative wrappers with an attractive understated typographic design that varies slightly through the years; ca. 24 pp. each. Advertisements. Very good condition throughout; occasional light wear to overlapping wrapper edges. Set of four complete yearly runs, as well as one special jubilee issue, of this undocumented Czech-language journal of the interwar Czech student community in Vienna, billed as the only independent Czech journal in Vienna. "Náraz" contains articles on the cultural and political interests of the Czech minority in Austria, reflections on student life and the life of the young generation in Vienna, as well as overviews of Czech modernist art and literature, and even occasional original poetry and prose. Some of the contributions also concern contemporary philosophy, such as the conflict between pragmatism and idealism. Of particular interest are the literary articles by Alexandr Hlin ný on Vitezslav Nezval's prose and on modernist Czech poetry. The authors of original poetry included in "Naraz" are Ji í Janou?ek, Václav Hrubý, K. J. Kraus, Alois Hoffmann, Jan Ho ký, Pavel Stránský, Miroslav Bidlas, and Maria Franzlová. The wrappers are illustrated with an appealing typographic design (unattributed) and each issue contains numerous advertisements of Czech businesses in Vienna, often set in appealing typography. Genuinely rare; not even held at the Czech National Library, KVK, OCLC only shows a single issue at Universitätsbibliothek Wien. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        New York

Henry Holt and Co. New York (1930) - First Edition stated. Joaquin Vaquero dustjacket art and illustrations. Morand's impressions of New York are both positive and negative. He disapproves of the upper class, the fashion, speakeasies and the area around Times Square. He is impressed by the City Hall and the buildings around Washington Square, which he regards as genuinely American and not false imitations of historical styles. He makes recurring references to the contemporary saying that "the Jews own New York, the Irish run it, and the Negroes enjoy it". In his conclusion, he writes: "I love New York because it is the greatest city of the universe and because its people are the toughest, the only people who, after the war, went on building, and who do not merely live on the capital of the past, the only ones, besides Italy, who do not demolish but construct." Near Fine, contemporary signature at front pastedown, tiny stains at inner front hinge, in Very Good dustjacket, shallow loss at top spine end and top flap corners.         McClellan, Mynderse and Allied Families: Genealogical and Biographical

New York: The American Historical Society, Inc, 1930. Full leather. Very Good +. Lavishly-bound and printed 1930 genealogy of the McClellan, Mynderse and Allied Families. Sumptuous full-leather, a navy-blue morocco, with brilliant gilt-decorated family crests and finely-tooled bordering at the panels. 5 raised bands, lovely gilt-tooling and lettering to the spine. Beautiful offsetting dark-red and navy-blue leather pastedowns, with detailed flower (rose) inlays. Light wear to the outer hinges (which are still very strong), otherwise clean as could be. Tall quarto, all edges gilt. Among other achievements, the McClellan family financed the 1925 construction of McClellan Hall at Yale, after whom the dorm was named. More than anything though, this genealogy is essentially a hunting log, devoting the final chapter (which represents 80% of the book) to recounting an exotic, 2 month hunting trip by Edwin McClellan in 1923 in Western Canada. (The narrative of the expedition is supplemented with dozens of crisp black-and-white photos {all with their original tissue-gurads}).

[Original Photograph Album of Children with Polio]

Chicago: np, [ca. 1930-1959]. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Oblong 8vo. Commercial strong-bound album. Vinyl covered boards. 145 black and white; 4 color photographs verso and recto mounted to 23 black paper leaves, one or two elements loosely laid in. Front cover detached, but archivally mended. Edgewear to pages. Images generally clean, well preserved. A few prints perished. Overall very good. Original photograph album of the Zagar family of Chicago, focusing primarily on their daughter, Margaret Ann (b. 1936), and covering primarily the 1940's. Most prints snapshot in size, though notably several enlargements appear as well, including 4 class photographs between 1942-1950 from the Gompers School for the Handicapped on the city's South side at 123rd. and State St. Margaret Ann was apparently stricken with Polio at an early age, as early as 2 years old according to photograph dates, and her development is chronicled in detail, into young adulthood, closing with images of her in a wheelchair in December 1954. The images between present a rich visual archive of growing up with the disease.

[PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM DEPICTING NATIVE AND AMERICAN MILITARY LIFE IN THE PHILIPPINES DURING THE 1920s AND 1930s]

Philippines, 1930. Eighty-eight photographs of varying sizes, most approximately 3 x 5 inches. Black faux leather album, tied with cord. Photos in white corner mounts on black construction paper. With original tissue guards, of which the first three are detached and chipped. A few images slightly faded or with light soiling, but mostly clear and well developed. Very good. An outstanding album of eighty-eight photographs portraying native country life and showing scenes from the U.S. Army's Nichols Field outside of Manila during the 1920s and 1930s. The images of native Filipinos consist principally of individual and group portraits of men and women in traditional dress. There are a number of additional images showing agricultural activity, rural farm land, and animals. The second significant portion of the album contains images of Nichols Field, the American military base built near Manila in 1919. These photos depict indigenous people and American personnel in and around the airfield, along with several representations of military buildings, living quarters, army activity, airplanes, and other army matériel. A few other images of port activity and a photograph that captures an eruption of the Mayon volcano are also included. Well shot and well developed, the photographs in this album create a striking portrait of two vastly different modes of living during this period in Philippine history.

Wild Apples. With a Preface by William Butler Yeats.

Dublin: The Cuala Press, 1930 - Octavo. Original Holland boards. With the unprinted dust jacket. A fine copy, with the dust jacket very good though chipped at the ends and corners, and a little creased and marked. First edition thus, presentation copy inscribed "with Homage to Katherine Tynan from Oliver Gogarty, Dublin 24:iv:1930" on the front free endpaper, with the very scarce dust jacket. Katherine Tynan (1859-1931) was a hugely prolific Irish poet, a significant figure in the Irish Renaissance, and a friend of W. B. Yeats. This edition of Wild Apples, which was printed in 250 copies, was preceded by the 1926 private edition of 50 copies which did not include Yeats's preface. It is the second selection by Yeats of the poems of Oliver Gogarty, likened by him in his opening poem, The Crab Tree, to "a tart crop" of wild apples. This copy also contains the publisher's advertisement card for Wild Apples laid in. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Malý ernoch [The Little Negro]

[Brno], circa 1930. Limited Edition. Original woodcut print in black ink on translucent paper, affixed at top edge to cream-colored cardstock. Measures 24.5 cm x 26.5 cm (cardstock slightly larger). Signed, titled, and numbered (3/25) by the author on bottom edge. The image is a close-up of a black child in livery carrying a large glass on a salver. In the background, a small crowd, all facing away, is awash in the light of a chandelier. Helena Bocho áková-Dittrichová (1894-1980) was the first female wordless novelist, and the only woman to work in this medium during its heyday. She was born in the Moravian region of what is now the Czech Republic and spent most of her life in Brno, the Moravian capital. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and in 1923 received a government scholarship to study printmaking in Paris. Bocho áková-Dittrichová's unpublished wordless novel Malí ka Na Cestách [The Artist on Her Journey] recounts this period in her life. In Paris, she first encountered the wordless novels of Flemish artist Franz Masereel, the originator of the form, and was inspired to create her own. Over the course of her long career, Bocho áková-Dittrichová published several wordless novels, along with travelogues and historical works. She also worked as a printmaker and illustrator, and was highly regarded in her native land, though largely unknown elsewhere. This changed in 2014, when the National Museum of Women in the Arts held an exhibition of her work entitled "The First Woman Graphic Novelist: Helena Bocho áková-Dittrichová," and this important artist finally began to gain global recognition. Her work, however, is still not widely available.
