(TV) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

String-tied gray cloth over paper boards with "my school life memory book" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 82 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1.5" and 3" x 5" with captions as well as various ephemera. Very good album with some bowing, with near fine photographs.A scrapbook kept by Lois June Jessup during her high school freshman and sophomore years at Whittier High School in Whittier, California in 1927 and her junior and senior years at Oceanside-Carlsbad Union High School in 1929. The album has sections from each year of high school with photos and ephemera detailing the grade. It begins with a list of Jessup's classmates followed by several small photo strip portraits of her girlfriends. She continues by including programs for events, ticket stubs, and membership cards for her time at Whittier. Also included are assignments such as spelling tests and essays tipped into the pages with grades, all of which show Jessup as a good student. One page shows commercial photos from Gay's Lion Farm where Jessup was taken by her uncle and grandmother as a reward for getting through admission day. She writes that it was "very interesting and we enjoyed it very much." One sections shows the school's dress up days with girls dressed up as musicians, one of which is complete with black face. In 1929 Jessup transferred to Oceanside-Carlsbad Union High School for her junior and senior year. These pages continue with ephemera from her time at the school including a copy of the O-C High Tide newsletters, various programs, and an athletic letter for participating in basketball, volleyball, and baseball and earning 30 points. She includes pages dedicated to her athletic pursuits including a section with ephemera from her basketball banquet. One section with a photograph of a sailor and a ship is from a class cruise where Jessup excitedly writes that they had the whole ship to themselves. She continues, "the shipmates and waiters were sure nice to us and we had a wonderful time." Interspersed throughout the album are photos of her classmates, some candids include building a human pyramid and general high school goofing off. There are also small portraits of the seniors in her class pasted next to a card with their names. An interesting and complete look at a California high school girl's education in the late 1920s.

        William Stewart Halsted, Surgeon.

Johns Hopkins Press, 1930., Baltimore: - 8vo. xvii, [1], 241, [1] pp. Frontis. portrait, 17 illus., fold-out family-tree diagram. Blue blind- and gilt-stamped cloth. Inscription: "To Jack Gibbon in appreciation of our interesting experiences in 'experimental surgery' 1930-1931. E.D.C." Very good. First edition. INSCRIBED BY EDWARD DELOS CHURCHILL TO JOHN HEYSHAM GIBBON, INVENTOR OF THE HEART-LUNG MACHINE. The unique inscription in this copy of MacCallum's biography of Halsted, may well refer to a watershed moment in cardiac surgery, that led to the development of technology and techniques that saved, over the past sixty years, millions, of lives. Gibbon was a research fellow working under Edward Delos Churchill in 1930-1931, and together they performed numerous experimental surgeries aimed at increasing survival rates for open heart surgery patients (Hurst, Conti, and Fye, Profiles in Cardiology, 2003). A review of Churchill's archival papers, at the Harvard University Library, show six correspondences with Gibbon, and in two of them Churchill refers to Gibbon as "Jack". PROVENANCE: Edward Delos Churchill (1895-1972) was a noted thoracic surgeon. John Heysham Gibbon, Jr. (1903-1973) is best known for inventing the heart-lung machine and pioneering many techniques in open heart surgery. Gibbon's impetus for devising the heart-lung machine stemmed from an emergency surgery he performed with Churchill at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1930. "In 1930 he found himself assisting Dr. Edward Churchill in an emergency pulmonary embolectomy. At that time the procedure was one of desperation as no patient in the U.S. had survived the removal of blood clots in open-heart surgery. As Dr. Gibbon recorded the patient's waning vital signs prior to the procedure he thought, 'If only we could remove the blood from her body by bypassing her lungs, and oxygenate it, then return it to her heart, we could almost certainly save her life.' Despite a successful removal of large clots from the patient's pulmonary artery, she never regained consciousness. This 'critical event' initiated Gibbon's determination to produce a heart-lung machine" (Thomas Jefferson University Digital Commons) â€" Jefferson Univ. (web source).         My Early Life, a bibliographically unidentified binding variant

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1930. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the first edition, first printing, of Churchill's extremely popular autobiography. This copy offers an additional enticement to collectors, being a variant binding not noted by bibliographers and among just a small handful of copies we have encountered bound thus. Various states of the first edition, first printing are known. First states were bound in both a coarse and a smooth plum colored cloth, have the title stamped on the front cover in either three or five lines, and contain a list of 11 Churchill titles in the boxed list of "Works by the same Author" on the half-title verso. Second state copies are distinguished by the addition of "THE WORLD CRISIS: 1911-1914" to the boxed list of works on the half-title verso, making 12 titles. It was presumed that all second state copies featured bindings with a five-line title on the front cover. In his excellent bibliography of Churchill's works, Ronald Cohen states: "... most, perhaps even all, copies of the second state will be found in binding cases in which the front cover is stamped in 5, rather than 3, lines..." This unrecorded variant is a first printing, second state copy in the coarse cloth binding with three lines on the front cover. Condition is very good overall. The binding remains tight with vividly bright boards, and little of the customary wear. The lower corners are bumped and the spine moderately sunned, but the spine nonetheless remains nicely rounded with decent color and bright gilt. The contents are respectably bright. Spotting is light for the edition, primarily confined to the prelims and page edges. We find no previous ownership marks. My Early Life covers the years from Churchill's birth in 1874 to his first few years in Parliament. One can hardly ask for more adventurous content. These were momentous and formative years for Churchill, including his time as a war correspondent and cavalry officer in theatres as varied as Cuba, northwest India, and sub-Saharan and southern Africa. This time contained a wide range of experiences in Churchill's life. Not only was he developing as an author, publishing his first books, and making his first lecture tour of North America, but this was also the time of his capture and daring escape during the Boer War, which made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. Churchill would take his seat in Parliament only weeks after the end of Queen Victoria's reign. My Early Life remains one of the most popular and widely read of all Churchill's books. And for good reason, as the work certainly ranks among the most charming and accessible of his many books. An original 1930 review likened it to a "beaker of Champagne." That effervescent charm endures; a more recent writer called it "a racy, humorous, self-deprecating classic of autobiography." To be sure, Churchill takes some liberties with facts and perhaps unduly lightens or over-simplifies certain events, but this is eminently forgivable and in keeping with the wit, pace, and engaging style that characterizes the book. My Early Life sold very well at the time and has seen a great many editions since, many of them collectible in their own right, but of course a premium attaches to first editions. The challenge for collectors is that the plum colored binding of this edition proved especially susceptible to fading, soiling, and wear; nearly all copies are considerably spine faded. Moreover, the contents are susceptible to heavy spotting and the binding is often cocked. This helps explain why so many first editions of this book have been torn apart and rebound. This original binding is both an interesting variant and in condition superior to many copies we encounter. "[Will James, a] western author and artist, was born Joseph Ernest Nephtali Dufault in St. Nazaire de Acton, Quebec, Canada, the son of Jean Dufault and Josephine (maiden name unknown). When the Dufault family moved to Montreal, he attended a Catholic school and his father ran a hotel, in which the boy heard stories of trappers that he later used to fabricate parts of his Lone Cowboy: My Life Story.Lone Cowboy, his partly faked autobiography, hoodwinked the vast American buying public, and even his wife, and was a 1930 selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club. (Its dishonesty was not exposed until 1967.) Although he wrote eighteen more books, James slowly lost his self-assurance, sense of well-being, and artistic inspiration. He constantly feared being found out as a prevaricating autobiographer." (American National Biography). Howes. Streeter. HBS 67870. $5,000 [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Palestine: Report on Immigration, Land Settlement and Development. By Sir John Hope Simpson, C.I.E. 1930. Presented by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to Parliament by Command of His Majesty. October, 1930.

Printed and Published by His Majesty's Stationery Office, London, England 1930 - 245 x 155 mm. 185 pages plus a foldout graph attached to rear wrapper. Tear and chip to wrappers. The Report, known as the Hope Simpson Report, following the Hope Simpson Enquiry, was a product of the British commission that Simpson led. It was formed in August 1929, followed the 1929 rioting and pogroms by the Arabs and its conclusion was to be, and was, to limit Jewish Immigration, Land Settlement and Development issues in the British colony of Palestine, known as British Mandatory Palestine, as recommended by the Shaw Commission after the pogroms. The report, dated October 1, 1930, was published October 21, 1930 and it recommended limiting Jewish immigration based on Palestine's alleged economic absorptive capacity. The Passfield White Paper was also dated October 1, 1930, and recommended similar limiting of Jewish immigration. Then, as now, the Arabs were more numerous, had oil, and were not Jews.
