St.Mawr - This is not the book but a unique Furniture Drawer (Toolbox) made by a D.H.Lawrence enthusiast. The Drawer was made in bookform and has the St.Mawr Emblemata on the cover and the title on the spine. Excellent craftsmanship. Leather covered board.

1930. no place, c. 1930. Folio. Original Hardcover with leather covered boards. Hard to qualify this exceptional piece as Ephemera, but that is what it is. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Dimensions are 45,5cm (high), 34cm (wide), 13cm (thick). St Mawr is a short novel (or novella) written by D. H. Lawrence. It was first published in 1925.nThe heroine of the story, Lou Witt, abandons her sterile marriage and a brittle, cynical post-First World War England. Her sense of alienation is associated with her encounter with a high-spirited stallion, the St Mawr whose name provides the title for this tale. She eventually settles in a remote ranch set high in the mountains of New Mexico, near Taos.nLawrence wrote most of this brief novel whilst spending five months of the summer of 1924 at what is now known as the D. H. Lawrence Ranch, a property which he and wife, Frieda, acquired from Mabel Dodge Luhan earlier that year.nSt Mawr first appeared in St Mawr and Other Stories which, in addition to the novella, consists of two short stories 'The Overtone' and 'The Princess', and two unfinished stories 'The Wilful Woman' and 'The Flying Fish'. All these works were written during Lawrence's stay in America between 1922 and 1925. (Wikipedia)

        Alice in Wonderland

Paris: The Black Sun Press, 1930. Original Wraps. Collectible; Fine/Fine. A beautiful copy of the 1930 Black Sun edition of "Alice....". Clean and Near Fine in its original wrappers and in a seemingly-immaculate, Near Fine example of the tissue dustjacket. Oblong octavo, 114 pgs. The 6 colored lithographs by Marie Laurencin have been very neatly excised from this copy, in fact so neatly--with almost no sign of their removal-- that one can certainly speculate that this may be a trial or pre-publication copy in which the plates were never included. This copy does include though the publisher's pink chemise protecting the fragile book and a VG example of the original silver carboard-backed slipcase. Another wonderful effort from the ex-patriots Harry and Caresse Crosby.

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

St.Mawr - This is not the book but a unique Furniture Drawer (Toolbox) made by a D.H.Lawrence enthusiast. The Drawer was made in bookform and has the St.Mawr Emblemata on the cover and the title on the spine. Excellent craftsmanship. Leather covered board.

no place, c. 1930 - Folio. H. Lawrence. It was first published in 1925. The heroine of the story, Lou Witt, abandons her sterile marriage and a brittle, cynical post-First World War England. Her sense of alienation is associated with her encounter with a high-spirited stallion, the St Mawr whose name provides the title for this tale. She eventually settles in a remote ranch set high in the mountains of New Mexico, near Taos. Lawrence wrote most of this brief novel whilst spending five months of the summer of 1924 at what is now known as the D. H. Lawrence Ranch, a property which he and wife, Frieda, acquired from Mabel Dodge Luhan earlier that year. St Mawr first appeared in St Mawr and Other Stories which, in addition to the novella, consists of two short stories 'The Overtone' and 'The Princess', and two unfinished stories 'The Wilful Woman' and 'The Flying Fish'. All these works were written during Lawrence's stay in America between 1922 and 1925. (Wikipedia)

Poema par ormani (Poem about a Cabman)

Zelta grauds, Riga (Gold Grain, Riga) 1930 - Latvian language. Enlarged format. Octavo 20 x 24 cm. Weight 100 gr. Wrappers 48 pp., including 3 sheets of illustrations tables. The book is in Near Fine condition, without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Two soft creases across front cover corners, very light stain on the bottom left corner of front (please see images). Three amazing ink drawings for the book considered very successful work of Romans Suta. The poet’s ode to the cabman and the partying and entertaining city in which he drove his cart proved to be close in mood to the artist. That is seen in the many cafes, bars and saloons which he drew. Caks's poem depicts Riga's typical cabman, who became gradually replaced by cars. In the second half on 1920s Riga achieved progress in mechanization, jazz, outlandish schlagers, fashion, artistic movements etc. Poet portrays going away silhouette of modern city, which has undergone entire era of changes. In this poem, as in early works, poet swim strongly against the tide, he is against the generally accepted ranges of society and don't evaluate changes positively (here he takes cabman's side). As a poet, Aleksandrs Caks (1901-1950) was a legend, the most influential poet among the Latvian modernists. Caks' poetry is notable for its urban setting and modernity which gave it a strong contrast with the established pastoral and folkloric traditions in Latvian literature. His verses was devoted to Riga’s restless, throbbing life, including topics and characters that had hardly been featured before — the city nightlife, horse taxi drivers (cabmen), shop-windows, streets and boulevards, poverty- stricken suburbs. He is a world-level poet whose works are endowed with all human feelings, a vast scope of emotions and a passionate love. Aleksandrs Caks’ verse heralded the origination of the modern Latvian poetry by proposing new aesthetic principles and poetic forms. The format characteristics of his verse - rhyme, rhythm and imagery - have influenced succeeding generations of poets. Caks poetry is full of extravagant comparisons and metaphors. He keeps the reader riveted by the vivid scenery, the wealth of personifications, wild imagination and expressivness of his language. The lyrical strand of Latvian poetry is not absent even from Caks's most modernist, futurist poems. Artist Romans Suta (1896-1944) considered as outstanding representative of classical modernism in Latvia's art history. In the late 1910s, Romans Suta created artworks with simple forms and heightened expression. He often depicted Latvians, forged by war and their lives as refugees. By the first half of the 1920s, artist increasingly turned to the styles of Constructivism and Cubism. Very popular became his works in the field of graphic art - series of indian ink drawings which depict inviolable components of an urban environment, along with wine lovers, card players, musicians and dancers.         "I Got Rhythm"

: , 1930. "I Got Rhythm, I Got Music, I Got My Man Who Could Ask For Anything More" One of the Most Catchy Melodies in American History GERSHWIN, George. [Musical Notation] "I Got Rhythm". The two opening musical bars of the immortal "I Got Rhythm" Titled and signed by George Gershwin. [ca. 1930-1937]. Written in pencil on the back of a dinner menu: "Cream of Mushroom Soup/Cold Fish/Saddle of Lamb/Salad Galluis/Fruit/Coffee" (window mounted on back). Matted, framed and glazed. (2 7/8 x 4 7/8 inches; 73 x 123 mm.). Frame size: 9 3/4 x 11 3/4 inches; 248 x 299 mm. Provenance: Purchased from New York Rare Book Dealer Walter Schatski, November 1971. When George Gershwin composed "I Got Rhythm" with lyrics by Ira Gershwin for the 1930s musical Girl Crazy, he created not only one of the most catchy melodies in American history, but also a Jazz standard. Its chord progression, known as the "rhythm changes", is the foundation for many other popular jazz tunes such as Charlie Parker's and Dizzy Gillespie's bebop standard "Anthropology (Thrivin' on a Riff)". "Not only did Ethel Merman introduce "I Got Rhythm" in the Broadway musical, Girl Crazy, but Girl Crazy introduced Ethel Merman to Broadway. The show opened on October 14, 1930, at the Alvin Theatre and ran for 272 performances. Ginger Rogers was the co-star of the show, but in her debut as a leading lady she lost the limelight to Ethel Merman." "I Got Rhythm" was George Gershwin's favorite among the songs he composed for Broadway musicals. An indication of this affection was the dedication to his brother Ira of his last concert work, The "I Got Rhythm" Variations, which was written expressly for a 1934 concert tour with the thirty-piece Leo Reisman Orchestra, conducted by Charles Previn. The 12,000-mile tour was a self-financed affair to celebrate the tenth anniversary of "Rhapsody in Blue." ( George Jacob Gershwin (September 26, 1898 - July 11, 1937) was an American composer and pianist. Gershwin's compositions spanned both popular and classical genres, and his most popular melodies are widely known. Among his best-known works are the orchestral compositions Rhapsody in Blue (1924) and An American in Paris (1928) as well as the opera Porgy and Bess (1935). Gershwin studied piano under Charles Hambitzer and composition with Rubin Goldmark, Henry Cowell and Joseph Brody. He began his career as a song plugger, but soon started composing Broadway theatre works with his brother Ira Gershwin, and Buddy DeSylva. He moved to Paris intending to study with Nadia Boulanger, who refused him, where he began to compose An American in Paris. After returning to New York City, he wrote Porgy and Bess with Ira and the author DuBose Heyward. Initially a commercial failure, Porgy and Bess is now considered one of the most important American operas of the twentieth century. Gershwin moved to Hollywood and composed numerous film scores until his death in 1937 from a malignant brain tumor. Gershwin's compositions have been adapted for use in many films and for television, and several became jazz standards recorded in many variations. Many celebrated singers and musicians have covered his songs.

Experiments with High Velocity Positive Ions" in The Proceedings of the Royal Society, 129, 1930, pp. 477-489

Harrison & Sons, London 1930 - BOUND FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST DESCRIPTION OF THE FIRST PARTICLE ACCELERATOR TO BE INTENTIONALLY CONCEIVED. This paper describes the design and early operation of the first proton accelerator."The importance of Cockcroft and Walton's work is enormous, not only because it gave an experimental proof that quantum mechanics was adequate to treat the nuclear processes, but also because, at the global level, it foreshadowed what was going to be the future of nuclear physics, and more generally, of the physics of elementary particles: no longer an isolated work, which could be done in any laboratory, but an organized enterprise, that was possible only in well-equipped centers, where the great accelerating machines could be built and operated" (Bruzzanti, Enrico Fermi,159).Cockcroft and Walton's "paper marks the beginning of the lines of evolution for particle accelerators. The starting point is located with nuclear protophysics in a 1930 paper [the offered paper] by Cockcroft and Walton: 'It would appear to be very important to develop an additional line of attack on problems of the atomic nucleus. The greater part of our information on the structure of the nucleus has come from experiments with alpha particles and if we can supplement those with sources of positive ions accelerated by high potentials we should have an experimental weapon which would have many advantages over the alpha particle" (Cockroft and Walton, 1930, 477; ibid)."The study of the scattering of charged particles has been, since the early years of the 20th century, the main tool for the experimental research in atomic and nuclear physics. However, the energy of the particles emitted in natural processes is quite small, and therefore it became necessary to design the particle accelerators, machines that dramatically changed high energy physics. One could say, establishing an analogy with an older and more familiar area of investigation, that the particle accelerators have allowed researchers to explore the structure of matter at smaller and smaller dimensions, as the telescope enlarged our knowledge of the universe at much larger scales" (Bruzzanti, 157-158)."Cockcroft and Walton were among many scientists wanting to probe deeper into the fundamental structure of matter by penetrating the nucleus. Knowing that creating and maintaining a voltage that would allow them to accelerate alpha-particles to energies above those of radioactively-produced 's was currently impossible, they looked to accelerate something lighter instead-protons. "Cockcroft made estimations of the minimum energy required to penetrate a nucleus based on some calculations he found in an article circulating in the Cavendish Laboratory on the new theory of wave mechanics. The author of this article, George Gamow, a young Russian employed by Niehls Bohr's Institute of Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen, theorized that a charged particle making a head-on collision with a nucleus has a chance of penetration (tunneling) even if it does not have as much energy as would be required by pre-wave mechanics physics (Gamow, 496). "Cockcroft deduced that protons would be a better agent than alpha', and that a proton with energy of 300 kilovolts (kV) would be about one-thirtieth as efficient against boron as an alpha from polonium would be against aluminum. He and Walton went straight to work. They initially used a 200 kV transformer to accelerate protons through a straight discharge tube. When this yielded no results, they concluded that they needed higher potentials. "They decided to build a voltage multiplier consisting of a complicated set of capacitors connected to rectifying diodes acting as Figure 1. Cockcroft and Walton's voltage multiplier (Cockcroft and Walton, 620). 4 switches. They discovered that by opening and closing these switches in various sequences they could achieve a potential of 800 kV from their 200 kV transformer. In 1932 they were vindicated when they used a potential of 500 kV to accel [Attributes: First Edition]
