The large paper edition, one of 40 copies (this being No. 31) printed on Hollande paper. Basis for two superb films: director Jean Renoir's "La Chienne" (1931) and the American film noir classic, "Scarlet Street" (1945), directed by Fritz Lang and starring Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett and Dan Duryea. Very Good or better in original wrappers, slightly cocked with an equally slight roll and some faint creasing to the spine panel.

Charles Reginald Dawes was known to Maugham, and was the author of books on 18th Century writers, including the first English study of the Marquis de Sade. Stanford Univer- sity's copy of Maugham's 'Altogether' is similarly inscribed to Dawes on the ffep.

Printed titles and Suess illustrations at front and character descriptions at rear, containing puzzle, measuring 11.25" x 17" approx. total, comprized of 150 pieces chromolithographed on card. Fully collated. Puzzle generally fine. Envelope toned and creased throughout with several small holes at edges. An attractive example of Theodor Geisel's work as a commercial artist, predating his carreer as a children's book author. This puzzle, one of many notable advertising designs Geisel produced as a part of his longstanding contract with Standard Oil, is a scene showing Essolube defeating the five "Moto Monsters," a cast of characters symbolizing the perils of using poor quality motor oil. Signed Dr. Seuss, the puzzle shows elements of the illustrator's style that would later become key components in the the author's iconic childrens books.

An edition of a rare legendary eight-page Azerbaijani satirical political illustrated magazine in Azari, Russian and Turkic language, published in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 1930. - This is a rare surviving example of the Molla Nasraddin magazine, published between 1906-1931 for the Arabic, as well as partly Russian and Turkish readers. The name was inspired by the 13th century Muslim cleric Nasreddin, who is known for his funny stories and anecdotes. The magazine, illustrated by contemporary famous illustrators, in a style of Honoré Daumier or Toulouse-Lautrec, but with Arabic humour, depicted satirically various social phænomena, such as inequality, cultural assimilation, and corruption. The magazine was published in Tiflis (from 1906 to 1917), Tabriz (in 1921) and Baku (from 1922 to 1931) by the Azerbaijani editor Jalil Huseyngulu oglu Mammadguluzaden (1866-1932). Because of the historical events in the region, as well of a fragile paper, the magazine was printed on, the survival rate of such publications is very rare. In 2011 an exhibition, accompanied by a publication Molla Nasreddin: The Magazine that Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve, was dedicated to this magazine.

        Swimming the American Crawl

      Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company. 1930. First. First edition. Fine in a very good or better dustwrapper with a few tiny nicks and tears, internally tape repaired. A very nice copy of this book by the Olympic champion, which has become very uncommon in jacket. The following year author Cyril Hume, then working on the script for a new film adaptation of Tarzan the Ape Man, spotted the athlete and BVD model in his hotel swimming pool and a screen legend was born. .

Some off-setting to the rear panel and browning to the spine. Some wear to the edges and a piece of tape reinforcing to the top of the spine. Rare in the correct first issue dust wrapper and not the reprint dust wrapper which was priced at 3'6.

An unusually fresh NEAR FINE set of Doyle's Crowborough Edition, the only complete collection of Doyle's works published in the author's lifetime, one of only 760 sets issued, and SIGNED by Doyle in Volume 1. Volume I with frontispiece portrait. Original publisher's linen-backed oatmeal-colored boards (a few volumes lightly foxed), printed spine labels, top edges gilt. TWENTY OF THE VOLUMES RETAIN THEIR ORIGINAL DUST JACKETS (DJs mostly in splendid, complete, untouched condition, only one chipped). An unusually fresh set, most volumes likely unread. There is very little wear amongst the three volumes that lack jackets. The missing Volume (number 17) is unfortunate (especially for us as this set otherwise would be valued at more than $10,000). As of this writing, we've been unable to locate a replacement and consequently have priced this item at a third of the set's value. Needless to say, we are on the lookout daily for Volume 17 but you have the opportunity until then to acquire this set at a rock bottom price. It always seems surprising that Doyle's full writings were never collected during his life and lucky indeed that this signed set managed to be arranged and printed less than a year before the author passed away. This set is rarely encountered today in commerce and those few that can be found generally are rebound or lack the dust jackets. A prize for the Doyle/Sherlock collector.. Signed by Author.       Oxford by the Shakespeare Head Press for Basil Blackwell 1930-31 - Together 5 volumes. One of 450 copies only. Printed on Batchelor handmade paper and illustrated throughout with full-page wood engravings, portrait frontispieces and decorative title-page borders, all by John Farleigh, tissue-guard to elaborate frontispiece and title-page design of the first volume. Crown 8vo, original brick-red calf over and cream cloth covers, gilt lettered on the spines, protective glassine jackets. xxxix, 262; [vi], 289; xvi, 325; [vi], 307; xvi, 200 pp. A fine set, unusually nice, very handsome and clean and unusually well preserved. The calf bindings are in excellent condition with some honest and perfectly attractive age, though near as pristine as could be hoped. Crisp and fresh, an excellent set of a book rarely found in fine condition. FIRST EDITION OF THE GREAT WORK OF THE PRESS AND A FINE SET INDEED. Colin Franklin, writing in THE PRIVATE PRESSES, says that in the years after the death of A. H. Bullen (the Press's founder), the Shakespeare Head Press "became the most mature and sophisticated of the private presses, producing some works in the grand manner which are a great pleasure to read and examine now" (p. 147). This set indeed is "in the grand manner," printed in D. B. Updike's stately Centaur typeface, with large initials and shoulder notes, complemented perfectly by Farleigh's large wood-engravings. Typographically this is perhaps the most satisfying book of the press. GEO. CHAPMAN'S GREAT ENGLISH TRANSLATION. The final and most complete state of "Chapman’s Homer." It took Chapman 25 years to finish his master translation, meanwhile it was published in segments as he completed them. Seven books of the ILIADS (1-2 and 7-11) first appear in quarto in 1598, then books 1-12 in folio in 1609, and finally all 24 in 1611. Books 1-12 of the ODYSSES were first printed in c.1614 and then reissued with books 13-24 in 1615. Homer’s hymns and verses were separately published, c.1624 as was the BATRACHOMYOMACHIA. As the translation progressed, these works were also published together, so the ILIADS could be found alone, with the first 12 books of the ODYSSES, with the complete ODYSSES and finally with the ILIADS, ODYSSES and CROWNE of minor poems all together.       Fox Film Corporation, 1930. Early Draft Screenplay for the 1930 pre-code film, "Wild Company" (here under the working title, "Roadhouse") directed by Leo McCarey, written for the screen by Bradley King, and starring Frank Albertson and Bela Lugosi. An early example of a film about "rebellious youth," set during Prohibition, about the exploits of a spoiled young man who squanders his parents' money in an illicit speak-easy, and ultimately gets involved in murder. Featuring Bela Lugosi in a pre-"Dracula" role as a doomed club owner. Blue titled wrappers, with the title "Roadhouse" and a date of April 9, 1930. Holograph notation "N.Y." at the top right corner (this was the file copy for the New York office of the Fox Film Corporation). 137 leaves, mimeograph, rectos only. Pages Near Fine, lightly toned at the edges, wrapper Very Good plus with yapped edges, bound with two gold brads.

A very good+ book without inscrip- tions, with a little browning to the spine and some spotting to the page edges. Some light spotting to the prelims. The dust wrapper is in very good to near fine condition with no fading to the spine and priced at 7/6 net, with no loss and just some light wear to the spine tips and corners. Inscribed by Maugham on the front free endpaper 'For C. R. Dawes/Thanking him/W. Somerset Maugham/. Charles Reginald Dawes was known to Maugham, and was the author of books on 18th Century writers, including the first English study of the Marquis de Sade. Embossed, blue cloth with gilt title "The Dry Garden" on the front board.l A fine herbarium of about 140 pressed specimens with their English names with a neatly handwritten index of all species. The species are grouped according to genus. Several leaves are deliberately left blank, apparently to leave room for additional specimens. Specimens are British, and from the Continent, and are both true species and varieties or hybrids. Dried plants are on leaves 3, 8, 11, 12, 13, 19, 21, 24, 24 verso, 25, 27, 28, 33, 34, 37, 38. All the plants are very well preserved. Paper lightly age-toned, otherwise in very good condition. A very good, clean, and unique item.

Rough cut page are lightly tanned and thumbed at the edges, with some slight creasing and foxing. Small pencil inscription to bottom corner of some pages. Toipped-in and pasted in plates are bright and clear with some tanning to edges. Binding has remained firm. Some discolouration to rear pastedown and endpaper. Leather is scuffed at corners and a little faded along bottom edge and spine. general light rub wear.
