Prijs: ?6.000,- (incl. lijst).

CAPRI : Materials for a Description of The Island

      G. Orioli, Florence: 1930 - This is a Limited Edition, "1/525 copies of which 500 are for sale", #428, and signed by the Author, renowned for his WWI era SOUTH WIND, and a notable inhabitant of Capri, then a noted artistic colony. But most interesting is ther inscription on the ffep: "DICK HOLLIDAY FROM CERIO, 1934" Cerio was one of the 20th cerntury's most colorful mayors of Capri and a historic figure in his own right. 'Dick Holliday' appears to be Dick Halliday, founder of California's Palamino Association. 365 INDEXED deckled pages, this is a first rate history of the island most notorious as the vacation spot for Tiberius where little Caligula was reared to be the once and future monster. . The provenance is much more impressive than the appearance which is Good Only with typical wear to half cloth boards, with some tanning to cover paper, edgewear with small bumps, spine worn to text block along with some fraying/rubbing spots . Interior has slight tanning along edges, and is overall clean. A book that has seen use, but not abuse. Please see or request pics or additional info.         Poems

London: Humphrey Milford,, 1930. Edited with notes by Robert Bridges. Second edition with an Appendix of Additional Poems, and a Critical Introduction by Charles Williams. Octavo. Original blue cloth boards, titles to spine and front cover gilt, top edge trimmed, others untrimmed. With the dust jacket. With 2 fascimile signatures in the text. Small white mark to bottom edge of boards, light offsetting to endpapers, occasional leaves uncut; a very good copy in the uncommon jacket, price-clipped, spine browned, faint foxing to covers and small nicks to extremities. Second, and enlarged, edition, first impression. Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–1889) published very few poems in his lifetime and destroyed many of his early writings in a crisis of faith - he had been received into the Roman Catholic faith by Cardinal Newman himself in 1866, and in 1868 made a bonfire of his juvenilia. It was only decades after his death that, collected and largely designed by Hopkins's friend and admirer Robert Bridges, the first edition of this "sensitive, handsome, and almost complete" collection was published (ODNB). Contemporary reviews were mixed though some were stridently positive, such as Theodore Maynard: "A shy mid-Victorian priest, writing while Tennyson, Swinburne and Patmore led their various schools, was more modern than the most freakish modern would dare to be... He is the last word in technical development." Sales were slow and it had only just sold out by 1930, when this "second edition was called for by the poetry public who were demanding new, difficult poetic voices. Advocated especially by I. A. Richards, F. R. Leavis, William Empson, and Michael Roberts, so that his poems appeared in general and modernistic anthologies, followed by university and school syllabuses, Hopkins had suddenly become a popular modern poet". Uncommon in the jacket, with only two copies traced at auction.

1930 - WODEHOUSE, P.G. VERY GOOD, JEEVES. Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Doran, 1930. Small 8vo., orange cloth in dust jacket; 340 pages. First Edition (so stated on the copyright page). There is an interesting story behind the dust jacket for this title and, if your copy is price-clipped, don't worry- apparently they all are! The publisher either didn't put a price or clipped it from all of the dust jackets and issued with book with a wrap-around band that advertised the book had been reduced from $2.50 to $2.00 and was now selling for $1.00, probably due to the Depression affecting sales. The dust jacket has the code "746" on the front flap and "743" on the rear flap. Very Good (little soil covers & little wear head of spine; little minor discoloration rear pastedown); little soil & minor edgewear (clean one-inch tear) d/j. $500.00. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Dimensions are 45,5cm (high), 34cm (wide), 13cm (thick). St Mawr is a short novel (or novella) written by D. H. Lawrence. It was first published in 1925.nThe heroine of the story, Lou Witt, abandons her sterile marriage and a brittle, cynical post-First World War England. Her sense of alienation is associated with her encounter with a high-spirited stallion, the St Mawr whose name provides the title for this tale. She eventually settles in a remote ranch set high in the mountains of New Mexico, near Taos.nLawrence wrote most of this brief novel whilst spending five months of the summer of 1924 at what is now known as the D. H. Lawrence Ranch, a property which he and wife, Frieda, acquired from Mabel Dodge Luhan earlier that year.nSt Mawr first appeared in St Mawr and Other Stories which, in addition to the novella, consists of two short stories 'The Overtone' and 'The Princess', and two unfinished stories 'The Wilful Woman' and 'The Flying Fish'. All these works were written during Lawrence's stay in America between 1922 and 1925. (Wikipedia)

        Alice in Wonderland

Paris: The Black Sun Press, 1930. Original Wraps. Collectible; Fine/Fine. A beautiful copy of the 1930 Black Sun edition of "Alice....". Clean and Near Fine in its original wrappers and in a seemingly-immaculate, Near Fine example of the tissue dustjacket. Oblong octavo, 114 pgs. The 6 colored lithographs by Marie Laurencin have been very neatly excised from this copy, in fact so neatly--with almost no sign of their removal-- that one can certainly speculate that this may be a trial or pre-publication copy in which the plates were never included. This copy does include though the publisher's pink chemise protecting the fragile book and a VG example of the original silver carboard-backed slipcase. Another wonderful effort from the ex-patriots Harry and Caresse Crosby.
