First edition. In the 1990s mankind faces annihilation at the hands of an advanced humanoid race dwelling in caverns beneath the Pacific ocean. This novel was first published as a six-part serial in ARGOSY, 2 March - 6 April 1929. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 533. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 227. From the Jack Warring collection with his signature and rubber-stamped name and address and 3 October 1930 date stamp on front free endpaper. Slight spine lean, some mild soiling to cloth and light soiling and tanning to page edges, a very good copy in very good, bright four-color pictorial dust wrapper (reproducing an Argosy cover illustrating the story painted by Robert A. Graef) with light wear along top and bottom edges, mainly spine ends and corner tips, and dust soiling to spine and rear panels. Overall, an attractive example of the dust jacket. A pretty nice copy of a book seldom found in superior condition. (#156827)

Death in Red. [Typescript detective novel] "by Robert Dewees"

[N.p., New York 1930 - Apparently unpublished. Typescript. [5], 259 leaves, text on recto only, with occasional corrections/alternative readings in pencil. 1 vols. 4to (11 x 8-12 inches). 'the friendly presence of the thousands of volumes in the stacks'. "feeling, as he often did, the friendly presence of the thousands of volumes in the stacks"An intriguing novel involving the brilliant Dr. Orlando Fenloe, whose "agency" is actualy a private library - the "Baconian Library" on Bacon Square in lower Manhattan, which doesn't have clients but "members" who are entitled to call upon the research services the library can offer. Mr. Bottsford, minority shareholder in United Emporia, asks Fenloe to look into the activities of the chairman, Mr. Manfred. Missing silver, assaults, car crashes, and when Santa Claus topples over in one of the display windows at Randall's department store, it turns out to be the corpse of Manfred. There are red herrings and tough talking policemen, and at the conclusion, Fenloe explains all.Cornwall, Connecticut, may be the link between the author and agent Nannine Joseph. The latter's clients included Mark van Doren, who had a house in Cornwall, and, at one time, the Roosevelts. An unpublished novel with bibliophilic elements. Provenance: Naninne Joseph (literary agent, 200 West 54th Street, New York), with her ink-stamp on title sheet Hole-punched and bound by metal fastener between thin card covers with typescript title label affixed to upper cover.         Silver Wings

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1941 (c.1930). New York: Alfred A. Knopf. Very Good+ in Fair dj. 1941 (c.1930). Reprint. Hardcover. [a good solid clean copy, some light shelfwear and minor bumping at bottom corners; the jacket, unfortunately, is hideously scarred right in the middle of the front panel, with a curving surface-peeled area measuring a little more than 5 inches top-to-bottom and about 1-1/4 inches at its widest point (more or less in the shape of South Vietnam, if that helps to visualize it), plus another dime-size surface scar (probably from a removed price sticker) at upper right-hand corner, just catching the "R" in "SILVER"; there's some additional edgewear and a few small tears, but the big scar really trumps everything else -- honestly, it's enough to make you cry, especially considering the rarity of this particular jacket]. Very scarce collection of World War I aviation stories (all of which, with one exception, were first published in Boys' Life), by this hard-boiled writer, who at the time of its first issue in 1930 was on the threshold of breaking out of the pages of "Black Mask" and other pulps into the realm of hardcover fiction with "Green Ice." Whitfield was an associate (read: drinking buddy) of Dashiell Hammett, and although he was "of the school," his work never did much more than brush up against that of such masters as Hammett and Chandler, quality-wise. Still, his aviation stories, as E.R. Hagemann has noted, "have a verisimilitude about them not always found in the pulps," due to Whitfield's own experiences as a pilot in the war (although by William F. Nolan's account his actual combat exploits were very limited). At one point, he was touted by an enthusiastic pulp magazine editor as "America's foremost writer of aviation fight stories," which might have been both a tad hyperbolic and yet altogether true. (Who would the competition have been, exactly?) The jacket blurb makes this sound like a novel ("a fast-moving story which describes the war crossing of a group of pilots on a transport"), but in fact there are a dozen more-or-less self-contained stories, divided into three sections: Wings of War; Wings of the Mail; Wings of Transport. (One of the most interesting is "The Camera Shoot," dealing with the use of motion-picture cameras (mounted in place of guns) at an aerial combat training school in France.) By the way, the book also features very stylized endpaper illustrations, which I believe are identical to those in the first edition.[Another couple of words about the horrible jacket-scar: it seems to me, due to the patterned design of the jacket illustration, that some talented graphic artist-type (definitely not me!) could Photoshop this jacket and digitally "fill in" the missing parts, thus creating quite a presentable restoration/facsimile. Whether this could be in any way the basis for an actual restoration of the original jacket, I couldn't say.] .

        The Redhead from Sun Dog

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company. 1930. First. First edition. Slight waviness to the spine, else fine in very good or better dustwrapper (with art by "Mon Randall") with some small tears. Basis for the 1934 film serial The Red Rider directed by Lew Landers, and featuring Buck Jones, and with athletic great Jim Thorpe in a lesser role. The 1934 film probably had some effect on the comic book and radio hero created in 1933 as the Bronc Peeler, but whose name was changed in 1938 to Red Ryder (of "You'll shoot your eye out" fame). .

Although there is no printed dedication in the book, this copy is the dedication copy with a signed inscription by Kallas to British author Edward Garnett on the half title page: "To / Edward Garnett / from / Aino Kallas." Accompanied by two handwritten letters from Kallas to Garnett, the first, dated 15 November 1929, asking for Garnett's permission to dedicate the English translation to him, the second, dated 28 February 1930, an anguished letter saying she had just received the first copies and Cape had not printed the dedication to Garnett in the book. A novel of lycanthropy unaccountably dropped from the 1978 Bleiler Checklist. Although herself a Finn, Kallas wrote mainly about her husband's country, Estonia.         Small Group of Original Illustrative Watercolor Artworks Signed By Phyllis Yglesias

Small group of art consisting of four pieces, with some ancillary material, done in a style very reminiscent of the work of Arthur Rackham; no date but circa 1930 or so; including: 2 'border elements' one of small undersea plantlike- beings with faces and the other with stylized goldfish or koi, swimming around blossoming sea-plants, both in muted orange and blue-gray tones, approximately 1 1/2" x 6 1/2"; one pen & ink and colored piece entitled "An Inspection." (with written below) "Conscience inspecting the book (of sins)" signed in ink lower right approx. 5 1/2" x 8"; and another pen & ink and colored piece, approx. 6 3/4" x 7" of a pondering seated elf in a patterned yellow vest with many curious creatures and plants surrounding him, done in the same 'fantastic' style, signed lower right; all the pieces accomplished on watercolor paper which was then laid-down onto cardstock and apparently had been over-matted at some point, as the old glue residue from the over-covering is evident around the edges of the card; evidently, the piece was to be set up as a panel, since there are layout instructions with measurements and pattern on the backs of the artworks, and one with "Conscience Inspecting the Book of Sins" in ink, with the other a poetic stanza: A Man of the Wilderness said to me/"How many strawberries grow in the sea?"/I answered him as I thought good,/"As many red herrings as grow in the wood". - which is a direct quote from The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin story by Beatrix Potter and evidently an old folk proverb; also another name pencilled-on the back of Geo. Duncan Es(q) 14 Y(?) Pk; Phyllis (Pog) Yglesias (d. 1977) British watercolor and drawing artist, wood carver, toy maker, was active from 1912. She was the sister of Dorothy Yglesias and daughter of British painter Vincent Philip Yglesias (1845-1911). She was one of the artists from the 'Newlyn school' and those working in the Lamorna Valley. The sisters were great naturalists and bird lovers and founded the now-famous Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital and Sanctuary, a wildlife hospital based near Mousehole, Cornwall, UK. in 1928, which later became extremely important following the Torrey Canyon oil spill disaster, spearheading the rescue and rehabilitation efforts associated with the affects on the coastal birds and wildlife after the wreck of this tanker on the Cornish coast in 1967. Rather sadly and ironically, we include here a copy of the Dorothy Yglesias book on the story of the founding of the Sanctuary "The Cry of a Bird" written in 1962, 5 years before this marine disaster occurred. The book contains a line-drawing frontispiece by Phyllis Yglesias and is illustrated with black and white photographs of the sisters' life-work of bird rescue and is in very good condition in its jacket; the artwork in very good condition, one 'border' with a tiny hole, the rest very good, with the cardstock surrounds having the old glue residue on the edges.. Very Good.

        The Minutes of the Hexagon.

30th. April to 1938 28th. October. Volume I all issued 1930 - Unpaginated, type-script, c.250 pages, rectos only. Half vellum and cloth, the spine lettered THE MINUTES OF THE HEXAGON. VOL. I, in very nice condition. *The volume begins with the list of members : RUSSELL BRAIN - HUGH CAIRNS - MACDONALD CRITCHLEY - DENNY-BROWN - GEORGE RIDDOCH - C. P. SYMONDS. The Minutes of the inaugural meeting records : 'A meeting to consider the formation of the club was held at the house of Dr. C. P. Symonds, 74 Wimpole Street, on April 30, 1930. There were present Drs. Symonds, Riddoch, Critchley, Brain, Denny-Brown and Mr. Cairns. After dinner and an unpremeditated and somewhat spirited but inconclusive discussion on the treatment of injuries of the spinal cord, the formation of the club was discussed. It was decided to hold three meetings a year - in February, June and October. The meetings were to be preceded by a dinner and were to take place on neutral ground. The arrangements for the next meeting were left in the hand of Dr. Riddoch.' There followed detailed notes on procedure. This volume contains the abstracts of 30 meetings, the first clinical meeting being presented by Denny-Brown, on 27th. June 1930 - Relationship of Cerebellar signs to Cerebellar Function; the final meeting for this volume was held on 28th. October 1938 and was presented by George Riddoch - Hypothalmic Autonomic Attacks. There is a point of confusion about the final meeting - the date in October 1938 is listed as such in the Index of Meetings, the note of that meeting is signed by Riddoch and dated for Oct.'38, but the meeting itself is dated for June 24th. 1938 and is so listed in Macdonald Critchley's account of the Hexagon in his essay collection - The Citadel of the Senses'. Many of these are signed by the presenters. The Index of Papers follows the Membership List and records that Symonds presented 8 papers - Riddoch presented 6 papers - Critchley presented 4 papers - Brain presented 6 papers - Denny-Brown presented 6 papers - and Cairns presented 3 papers. Thus 33 papers were given at the 30 meetings. The Minutes comprise Summary and Abstract of varying length. In addition there are a few letters bound in, either ALS [autograph letter signed] or TLS [typed letter signed], as follows : SIR HENRY HEAD to Hugh Cairns, Dec. 28, 1930, ALS - 'Your letter with its kind expressions of good will from all the members of the Hexagon have touched and pleased me more than I can tell you' ; OTTFRIED FOERSTER to Macdonald Critchley, 15.VII.32, ALS - 'I have your letter of June 27 and thank you most sincerely for your kind invitation .' ; HARVEY CUSHING to George Riddoch, July 22, 1933, TLS - 'Nothing could give me greater pleasure than to turn your famous club into a septagonal one some evening in November .' ; JEAN LHERMITTE to George Riddoch, 5 Octobre, 1934, TLS - 'Vous êtes très aimable de m'inviter si gentiment à l'occasion de mon prochain séjour à Londres .'; B. BROUWER to C. P. Symonds, Jan.6th. 1936, TLS - '. it will be a great honour for me to assist a dinner of the Hexagon Club.' These eminent neurologists were invited to attend at the meetings but did not give papers. A typed note copy from Critchley, loosely added, records that the next meeting would take place on June 30th. 1939, when Hugh Cairns '. will open a discussion on 'The cerebral circulation, with especial reference to raised intracranial pressure.' WWII began September 1st. 1939 - Critchley ends his account of the Club [Posthumous Papers of the Hexagon Club, pp.109-120, in Citadel of the Senses, Raven Press, 1986] - 'On 24 June 1938 Riddoch spoke on Hypothalamic Autonomic Attacks. He received a mixed and guarded reception, the club remained 'open-minded' on the subject. The minutes of the Hexagon end here, but apparently two more meetings were held. The war then came, and the Hexagon was a casualty. Half-hearted attempts to revive it were made in 1946, but Denny-Brown was then in Boston; Cairns had died; and George Riddoch was a very sick man.'         Maps of English Counties.

Oblong 4to. 25.5 by 36 cm. Album in original beige cloth, handwritten large title lable with pen and ink border decoration upper cover; with 29 manuscript maps, done in pen and ink and watercolours, title/contents page with floral ornamentation for borders; a little soiling to cover and label, otherwise near fine. This a charming and beautifully drawn manuscript atlas. There is one map for each English shire, plus London, with each map surrounded by many vignette illustrations highlighting points of interest and activities (industry, agriculture, cultural, sports) associated with the particular area. The number of these vignettes can vary, with London, which has the greatest number, featuring by our count 33, with pictures of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's, and other landmarks, of a Beafeater, a radio announcer, an equestrian, a bobby, zoo animals, paintings to mark galleries, a painter before a canvas to suggest Chelsea, and more. In some of the maps, there are additional tiny vignettes worked into the map, such as a fly fisherman or a golfer, over and above the many tiny cottage illustrations to mark villages, towns and cities in the particular county. London may have the greatest number of these vignettes, but the others are just as charming. For example, Hertfordshire has marching vegetables to signify market gardens, small planes for "aerodromes", rather precise representations of Haileybury & Imperial S. College, and so on. Minnie Whalley was a listed Cornwall artist, which is where she was originally from. She studied at the Gloucester School of Art and the Birmingham Central School of Arts and Crafts, and exhibited at the Clfton Arts Club, of which she was a member, the Dundee Society of Artists and the Royal West of England Academy, the oldest art gallery in Bristol, where she came to reside, and the St. Ives Art Gallery. Besides painting, Whalley worked in pewter and embroidery. She was included in the 1929 edition of "Who's Who in Art."

Photograph Album of Travels to Algeria and Tunisia, Through Desert Regions and Remote Villages in the Kabylia Region, with Views of Ancient Sites.

Algeria, Tunisia, 1930s., 1930. Pre-independence photograph album containing stellar scenes captured by an evidently affluent British couple, Mr. and Mrs. Fry, whose extensive travels saw them to principal cities and ancient sites, through desert regions and remote villages in the Kabylia region. 185 gelatin silver print photographs (130 from Algeria, 55 from Tunisia), most captioned in manuscript, and one colour printed drawing, mounted onto cardstock leaves. Photographs vary slightly in size, the largest measuring approximately 13 x 11 cm and the smallest 8,5 x 7,5 cm. Oblong 8vo. album measuring approximately 31 x 26 x 3 cm, green cloth boards. Wear to cloth boards mainly at extremities, otherwise in Very Good Condition, with crisp and captivating images. Further research is warranted to identify the Fry couple. They may be relations of English architect Edwin Maxwell Fry (1899-1987), who along with his wife and architect Jane Drew, established a firm and developed buildings for the British government in its West African colonies. Centering primarily in French Algeria, and continuing to the French Protectorate of Tunisia, the couple's tour is indeed noteworthy, the scenes captured in photographs most pleasing. Nomadic Bedouins, Arab towns, a camel market, views of the Ottoman built Kasbah, seldom photographed remote settlements and their inhabitants, these are but some of the striking snapshot views. Landing on the north coast of Africa at the port of Algiers and touring the city, nicknamed Alger la Blanche, several views are taken whilst walking through the Kasbah, commonly known then as the Arab quarter and built between the 16th and 18th centuries under the rule of an Ottoman sultan. From Algiers the foreigners traversed the country in a convertible motorcar which seems to be a 1920s Packard touring car, complete with chauffeur. Views begin with Tizi Ouzou city, the Oued Aissi river running through the Wadi Sebaou valley, the town of Azazga, and. Also in the Tizi Ouzou province, spectacular mountain and valley landscapes are seen from the remote village of Michelet [Ain El Hammam] in the Kabylie mountain range. Several photographs show the mountainous Kabylie region, also spelled Kabylia, including indigenous Kabyle families, and two Kabyle women carrying enormous bundles of twigs on the backs. The journey continues east to Bougie [Béjaïa], another important Mediterranean port city of Kabylia. Twelve photographs illustrate life in Constantine - the capital of Constantine Province in north-eastern Algeria, beginning with views of Old Town and the iconic bridge of Sidi Rashed, which had been completed not long before in 1912 and was then one of the highest and largest concrete arch bridges in the world. The bridge spans the mouth of the deep Rhumel River gorge, which has its own remarkable natural archway bridge not far from the city. It was a special day of festivities in Constantine when the Fry couple arrived, four images showing a very busy market place on that particular occasion. We also find one photograph of the Bey's palace and one of the "Arab quarter" Following Constantine are three street scenes in the city of Batna, a large bus and some faint store signs revealing French influence. Also in Batna province, twelve photographs show Timgad, founded by the Roman Emperor Trajan around AD 100, with the Arch of Trajan, half walls, the theatre, stone streets, and partial pillars piercing the isolation. In the town and commune of El Kantara, in Biskra Province, the travellers meet nomadic Bedouins travelling with a camel caravan, and more permanent settlements with dwelling made of stones and mud. In the town of Biskra, the couple experiences a camel tour. The city of Touggourt was evidently of special interest, with thirty-two photographs to illustrate and remember it by. The former sultanate and capital of Touggourt District, in Ouargla Province, images show a lively market square, where camels were sold - one of which had an amputated front leg. Innumerable men are seen at the market, while only one photograph shows two dancing girls. Other views include the French military headquarters, mosques and minarets, and the tombs of the Ben Djellab dynasty kings of Touggourt who reigned from the XVth to the XVIth centuries. An adventure crossing the dunes and tenting in the desert unfolds, bringing the coupe to El Oued, the "City of a Thousand Domes." Here, images show children at school, men construction a multi-windowed building, the famous domed rooftops, the principle mosque, and oases in the surrounding desert. Views of Tunisia begin at Tozeur, the photographer noting the clever and stylish architectural use of stone, the narrow tunnel-like streets, and inhabitants, both Arab and Jewish, going about their daily routine. Water carriers, musicians, an agriculturalist, vendors in triangular stick shelters, and the like, provide a most interesting window into traditional life. Thirty photographs are from Tozeur. Passing through Kebili, the hot springs at El Hamma, and a desolate region temporarily inhabited by a nomadic family in a simple tent protected by bushels of grass, creates lasting imagery of nomadic hardships. Then the city of Sfax emerges, this place being founded in AD 849 on the ruins of Taparura and Thaenae. An olive grove was visited here, where camels were employed at ploughing the fields and carrying out tree prunings. British destroyers HMS Winchelsea (D46) which operated from 1917-1945, and HMS Venesta are seen moored at Sfax in Tunisia. The Roman amphitheatre known as El Djem, anciently as Thysdrus and the largest ruins in North Africa, is shown in three views. From there the travellers continued to Sousse, to Kairouan where they saw four mosques, and finally Tunis, from where the couple surely began their voyage home..

Hills and the Sea, Malibu Coast

Los Angeles, c. 1930. on wove paper, matted, glazed and framed. Fine. Approximately 6 x 8 inches image area plus margins. Wood engraving No. 32 of 50, signed by Landacre in pencil lower left. Also signed in the plate Paul Hambleton Landacre (9 July 1893, Columbus, Ohio - 3 June 1963, Los Angeles, California) was one of the outstanding printmakers of the modern era. His distinguished body of work was largely responsible for elevating the wood engraving to an art form in twentieth-century America. Landacre's linocuts and wood engravings of landscapes, still lifes, nudes, and abstractions are celebrated for their technical virtuosity and mastery of design. In March 1932, the artist and his wife moved to a rustic house in the Echo Park neighborhood, also known as Edendale, near downtown Los Angeles, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Landacre died in 1963 soon after--and emotionally resulting from--the death of his wife who had been an essential working companion for 38 years, even helping the artist late in his life pull impressions from the formidable Washington hand press. In March 2006, with the growing appreciation of Landacre's artistic significance, their hillside home was declared a City of Los Angeles landmark (Historic Cultural Monument No. 839). Repositories of his work include the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; Library of Congress; Los Angeles Public Library; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Oakland Museum; New York Public Library; Philadelphia Museum; San Francisco, Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts; and the Seattle Museum.

New York: Farrar and Rinehart. 1930. First. First edition. Portions of the jacket (text from the flaps) affixed to the front endpapers, binding modestly smudged and soiled, a near very good copy lacking the dustwrapper. The author's exceptionally uncommon fourth book, and considered the finest of her "Ohio" novels. Powell was a prolific and well-regarded author, but until a relatively recent and well-deserved revival, her work was mostly forgotten. For forty years she was a valued jewel of the New York literary world and if you read her books it's easy to see why. .
