Dream of the Red Chamber (Hung Lou Meng)

18th-century Chinese novel of manners. « A richly illustrated Chinese accordion book with 10 silk paintings about the story of the red chamber. The features of this book are nothing less than remarkable, hand made paper with the paintings hand painted on very fine silk. The story is written in both Chinese and English, the typeface is a much older type dating to the 1930's. The book is handmade after the oriental fashion. The name of the artist is clearly advertised by seal chop, and is not a studio chop, which is featured on the strip on the front cover. The paintings are flawless, bright, with no smudging or discoloring of any kind, they are framed by a rich cream silk pattern. The book cover is in good condition, done in a rich very dark plum colored silk. There is only one other known copie of this bi-lingual painting album on the market. It is in excellent condition as featured here, the size is 8.5" x 6" (21 cm x 15.2 cm) and has a total of 10 painted illustrations measuring 6.25" x 4.5" (15.9 cm x 10.8 cm).»NOTE: The book will be carefully packed and sent by Canada Post. For the International sending, please to contact us. LE LIVRE sera emballé avec soin et envoyé via Postes Canada. Pour l'envoi International, s'il vous plaît nous contacter.

Octavo, pp. [1-7] 8-318 [319-320: blank], original orange cloth, front panel stamped in black, spine panel has lettering stamped in black and diamond design in red. Title novella is a conspiracy thriller with SF elements, to wit a death beam transmitted over the wireless. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 3-93. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 116.         [MAYAKOVSKY IN FRENCH] Mayakovsky po frantsuzski: 4 poemy / Perevod Andreia Gippiusa [i.e. Mayakovsky in French / Translated by Andrey Gippius]

Moscow: Published by the translator, 1930. [2], 46 leaves. 23x19 cm. Original front cover is preserved, spine and rear cover of modern paper. Some light restoration to the front cover, lacking staples so leaves are not bound, some soiling, previous owner's pencil drawing on the last page and corrections in the text. Otherwise good. One of 150 copies. Extremely rare. The cover (in Russian) and text (in French) were handwritten by the translator and lithographed on glass to rectos only. Overall 4 poems: For the Voice, Six Monks, Christopher Columbus, Left March. This edition is made in a tradition of Russian futurist books - hand-lithographed manuscripts and handwritten hectograph publications. Unlike the expensive and elevated art books, futurist books were 'rough, cheap, small, load out and inside'. A lot of them were made by Aleksei Kruchionykh (1886-1968), regarded by many as the father of Russian futurism. He was 'a kind of a chronicler of the futurists' and quite a number of his works were illustrated by famous artists such as Goncharova, Rodchenko, Rozanova, Malevich, et al. The only cheaper books were the popular series aimed at the lowest social classes. By putting such low prices on their works (50 kopecks versus ten rubles for a typical livre d'artiste) futurists were able to create an audience, mostly of students. Mayakovsky was one of the futurists and was among authors of the first futurist manifestos. However taking a lot from futurism Mayakovsky went far away from it and created his own unique style. This book published the year Mayakovsky died is interesting because it builds a bridge between the poet and Parisian avant-garde of 1920s for which he never had affection, but it was Paris where a lot of his former comrades from 1910s worked. In this light the figure of Andrey Gippius who is responsible for the production of this book seems curious. We don't know anything about him and it's unclear who the audience for this edition was supposed to be. No copies at the Worldcat.

Photograph album documenting a Marine's life while stationed in pre-World War II Guam

San Diego and Guam. Album. Very good. This 5.5" x 8" album contains over 40 pages filled with approximately 160 photographs ranging in size from 2" x 3" to 3.5" to 5.75". All of the photographs are attached with mounting corners. Most are captioned on the page in white ink which is faint but legible. The front of the album features a somewhat faded gilt Eagle, Globe, and Anchor (EGA) logo with "U. S. Marines" below. The photographs, pages, and album are all in nice shape. Most of the images are of Guam, although several show Marines at and views of Hawaii including a nice image of derricks at the Los Angeles oil field, and a couple of the transport ship, U.S.S. Henderson. The Guam images include: 1) Piti, Apra Harbor, and other scenes of Guam including beaches, thatch buildings, water buffalo, an outrigger canoe, and a rare snowstorm, 2) Attractive Guamanian women, 3) Commercial and military vessels including the Asiatic Fleet, 4) Marines (parades, individuals, etc.) and Marine facilities (barracks, tent camps, etc.), 5) An identified Marine driving an official staff car with an EGA logo on the door, 6) Marine aircraft in flight (They appear to be Curtis HS-2L Flying Boats and a Curtis SOC-1 Observation Seaplane.), 7) A Marine artillery battery firing a celebratory salute for Memorial Day, 1930, and using the same guns during beachfront training (The appear to be French-made Model 1897 75 mm Model 1897 field guns.) 8) A bivouac and convoy with trucks and a 10-Ton Artillery Tractor, 10) and more. A scarce and very nice visual record of U. S. Marine Corps life in the Pacific in the years between the World Wars.

POETRY ARCHIVE Of WINONA MONTGOMERY GILLILAND. Including Typescript Poems, Publications, and Two Photographs

Mooresville, IN, et al.: (various), (various). Circa 1930 - 1950. Dark brown three-ring binder stamped "Supplements. The Seeforth Service"; teal cloth book in tan dj printed in black; wrappered magazines. Tears to binding holes of two typescript leaves; occasional minor soil or edgewear; occasional pencil notations and corrections; binder worn. Book lightly damp-stained to bottom edge of boards and some leaves, spotting/soil to endpapers and few leaves; in Poor dj (panels split and damp-stained, loss to spine and edges). Average general wear to magazines, with occasional chipped edges, faint staining, and rusted staples; wrappers of one quite foxed. Overall, Good to Very Good condition.. Binder: 64 leaves, most typescript to recto only, containing 57 poems. INDIANA POETS: 160 pp. Poetry magazines: various paginations. 2 b/w photographs laid in, both ~3-1/2" x 3-1/2". 4to binder (11-1/2" x 9-1/2"); 8vo book and magazines. The poetry archive of Winona Montgomery Gilliland, a minor Indiana poet who garnered some national and local acclaim primarily in the 1930s. The feature item of the archive is a binder of over 50 typescript poems with occasional pencil notations and corrections, in what we presume to be Gilliland's hand, accompanied by a typed (and incomplete) List of Publications. Given that several of the poems were typed on the blank verso of her husband's life insurance office stationery, it seems likely that these were Mrs. Gilland's personal collection, comprised of both published and apparently unpublished poems. Also included is a copy of Indiana Poets: An Anthology of 48 Living Writers (New York: Henry Harrison, 1935), in which Gilliland is one of the featured 48 writers; 20 issues of various poetry magazines (one duplicate), containing publications of her poetry; and two b/w photographs, one of which is identified as a portrait of the author. Mary Winona Gilliland lived in Indianapolis most of her life, graduating from Tudor Hall and then DePauw University before marrying Robert V. Gilliland in 1915. She was published in The American Mercury, Poetry, Kaleidograph, Indiana Poetry Magazine, Weird Tales, Bozart, Westward, Better Homes and Gardens, Wings, and the 1937 issue of American Women Poets, among other magazines, and was invited to join the Poetry Society of America in 1937. A unique collection of material documenting the literary achievements of a largely forgotten mid-20th century poet.

Art Deco hand-painted French Fashion postcards

1930 - A group of 10 hand-painted postcards depicting women's fashion in the 1930s. The artists include "Rucio", "Orcina' and "Susie". All are in the style of the pochoir fashion magazine "Le Gazette du Bon Ton". On the verso is the standard postcard information for France "Carte Postale. La Correspondance au recto n'est pas acceptee par tous les pays etrangers (Se renseigner a la poste)" with a split back, the address on the right and room for correspondence on the left. Two cards by "Susie" are charming - one woman is dressed in a blue sailor's suit, the duffle bag slung over her shoulder, with the notation "U.S.A.". In the other, the young woman is wearing a short pink and blue striped outfit, holding a nest of eggs, the suggestive caption saying "Nous aussi nous retrouverons bientot notre cher petit nid!" (We will also soon find our own little nest!) The outfits are charming. The postcards are unused, printed on heavy rag card with untrimmed edges. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Silver Wings

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1941 (c.1930). New York: Alfred A. Knopf. Very Good+ in Fair dj. 1941 (c.1930). Reprint. Hardcover. [a good solid clean copy, some light shelfwear and minor bumping at bottom corners; the jacket, unfortunately, is hideously scarred right in the middle of the front panel, with a curving surface-peeled area measuring a little more than 5 inches top-to-bottom and about 1-1/4 inches at its widest point (more or less in the shape of South Vietnam, if that helps to visualize it), plus another dime-size surface scar (probably from a removed price sticker) at upper right-hand corner, just catching the "R" in "SILVER"; there's some additional edgewear and a few small tears, but the big scar really trumps everything else -- honestly, it's enough to make you cry, especially considering the rarity of this particular jacket]. Very scarce collection of World War I aviation stories (all of which, with one exception, were first published in Boys' Life), by this hard-boiled writer, who at the time of its first issue in 1930 was on the threshold of breaking out of the pages of "Black Mask" and other pulps into the realm of hardcover fiction with "Green Ice." Whitfield was an associate (read: drinking buddy) of Dashiell Hammett, and although he was "of the school," his work never did much more than brush up against that of such masters as Hammett and Chandler, quality-wise. Still, his aviation stories, as E.R. Hagemann has noted, "have a verisimilitude about them not always found in the pulps," due to Whitfield's own experiences as a pilot in the war (although by William F. Nolan's account his actual combat exploits were very limited). At one point, he was touted by an enthusiastic pulp magazine editor as "America's foremost writer of aviation fight stories," which might have been both a tad hyperbolic and yet altogether true. (Who would the competition have been, exactly?) The jacket blurb makes this sound like a novel ("a fast-moving story which describes the war crossing of a group of pilots on a transport"), but in fact there are a dozen more-or-less self-contained stories, divided into three sections: Wings of War; Wings of the Mail; Wings of Transport. (One of the most interesting is "The Camera Shoot," dealing with the use of motion-picture cameras (mounted in place of guns) at an aerial combat training school in France.) By the way, the book also features very stylized endpaper illustrations, which I believe are identical to those in the first edition.[Another couple of words about the horrible jacket-scar: it seems to me, due to the patterned design of the jacket illustration, that some talented graphic artist-type (definitely not me!) could Photoshop this jacket and digitally "fill in" the missing parts, thus creating quite a presentable restoration/facsimile. Whether this could be in any way the basis for an actual restoration of the original jacket, I couldn't say.] .

        The Redhead from Sun Dog

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company. 1930. First. First edition. Slight waviness to the spine, else fine in very good or better dustwrapper (with art by "Mon Randall") with some small tears. Basis for the 1934 film serial The Red Rider directed by Lew Landers, and featuring Buck Jones, and with athletic great Jim Thorpe in a lesser role. The 1934 film probably had some effect on the comic book and radio hero created in 1933 as the Bronc Peeler, but whose name was changed in 1938 to Red Ryder (of "You'll shoot your eye out" fame). .

THE WOLF'S BRIDE: A TALE FROM ESTONIA ... Translated from the Finnish by Alex Matson in collaboration with Bryan Rhys.

London: Jonathan Cape,. [1930]. original blue-gray patterned boards, spine stamped in gold, publisher's device stamped in blind on rear panel, bottom edge untrimmed.. A fine copy in very good dust jacket with mild wear at edges, tanned. spine panel, and general dust soiling. Bookplate of David Garnett on. the front paste-down. A wonderful association copy of a scarce book,. especially in jacket. (#149263). First edition. Although there is no printed dedication in the book, this copy is the dedication copy with a signed inscription by Kallas to British author Edward Garnett on the half title page: "To / Edward Garnett / from / Aino Kallas." Accompanied by two handwritten letters from Kallas to Garnett, the first, dated 15 November 1929, asking for Garnett's permission to dedicate the English translation to him, the second, dated 28 February 1930, an anguished letter saying she had just received the first copies and Cape had not printed the dedication to Garnett in the book. A novel of lycanthropy unaccountably dropped from the 1978 Bleiler Checklist. Although herself a Finn, Kallas wrote mainly about her husband's country, Estonia. These two countries, together with Hungary, belong to the Finno- Ugric language group, a linguistic anomaly unrelated to the Indo-European family. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1767. Bleiler (1948), p. 166. Reginald 08046.
