        Autograph Letter Signed

June 10, 1930, 1930 Handwritten letter signed by Thornton Wilder on Alpha Delta Phi Club stationary commenting on his disapproval of the sale of an authors manuscripts to a bookseller: "June 10, 1930/ My dear Mr. Greene: In my opinion manuscripts are not a thing that should be sold during an author's lifetime. And Galsworthy' gesture may prove - with the lapse of time-to have been ill-judged. Indeed I had hoped to see your bookshop, but the routine of campus duties made inroads into many of my good intentions and into almost all that centered downtown. Sincerely yours, Thornton Wilder"..         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1921 - 1921 to 1934 Set of Wisdens Rebound with Covers

Hi, This lot is a set of 14 rebound Wisdens all of them are rebound with covers. This Wisden set is in Good to Very Good condition. The boards are a bit of a mix but I have tried to make them as similar as possible so all are a reddish brown, all the books are in decent shape and a good but not mint set. Some notes are that the 1930 has a mark to the front cover, 1927 has a LCCC stamp to the bottom of the front cover, 1926 is a bit dark, 1923 a bit tatty and the 1925 has a cup mark to the cover. The 1932 may have a facsimile front cover , it feels facsimile but odd to see that in a rebind. They are all excellent internally all with photoplates, a great value for money set. 7/10s on average. Subject to availability I can swap any book inside this run or extend or slightly reduce the run for a different cost, please enquire for details.

London: Jonathan Cape, [1930]. First edition. Page edges dusty, covers are mottled, a very good copy in a very good dust jacket with age darkening to the spine panel, some loss to head of spine panel. Jacket also shows dust soiling, some stains to rear panel with a small chip from lower right rear corner and a short closed tear to lower rear panel. (13981). Octavo, [1-8] 9-114 [115-116] original blue-gray speckled boards, spine stamped in gold, rear cover stamped in blind with the publisher's colophon. A novel of lycanthropy unaccountably dropped from the 1978 Bleiler Checklist. Although herself a Finn, Kallas wrote mainly about her husband's country, Estonia.         Charming Peking: A Diary of Seven Days Spent in the Old Chinese Capital

Peking:: North China Standard,, 1930.. First edition.. Hardcover. Very Good+. Quarto. x, 44pp, with 12 tipped-in coloured illustrations by Gladys Mary Havers. With the author's 1952 gift inscription on blank page facing half title 'For Ruth / in remembrance of the good old days spent in China / Hope Danby/ Christmas 1952 / The Little Manor / Hawkhurst Kent'. Professional tissue repair to top edges of this and the following two leaves. Contents otherwise clean and fresh. Laid in are duplicates of two of the illustrations: one in a mount of thin card, which bears the artist's signature in pencil; the other tipped onto tinted paper, with an inked title and a nick to the edge. All being hand-coloured, they are not identical to those in the book. With the original pastedowns of deep golden silk. The book came to me with no covering to the upper board, but the faded patterned gold silk covering partially attached to the lower board. The case has been very nicely re-covered with a delicately textured off-white paper, and the (slightly creased) patterned silk re-attached to cover the upper board.

The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. Translated by Talcott Parsons. With a foreword by R. H. Tawney.

London: George Allen & Unwin, 1930 - Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, with the dust jacket. Very slight rubbing to spine ends and corners, dust jacket spine darkened, with some chipping to spine ends; a clean, bright copy in a very good jacket, rarely seen. Ownership inscription "Stewart" to front free endpaper in ballpoint. First edition of the first English translation of Weber's great work, which originally appeared in German across two issues of the Archiv für Sozialwissenschaften und Sozialpolitik (November 1904 and June 1905). He managed to substantially revise the text for its first publication in book form shortly before his death in 1920; it appeared under the title Die protestantische Ethik und der Geist des Kapitalismus and was intended as the first volume in a series collecting Weber's writings on the sociology of religion, though his death meant the project was never completed. "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism is Max Weber's most famous as well as most controversial book. In it he traced the influence of religious ideas upon the conduct of men and challenged the Marxist thesis that man's consciousness is determined by his social class Instead of completing his investigation of Protestantism, Weber began a comparative analysis of urban communities and of political organization as well as a study of the relation between religion and society. These wide ranging studies had the common purpose of defining and explaining the distinguishing characteristic of Western civilization. The Protestant Ethic was destined to serve as an introduction to this major theme of Weber's lifework, a specification of the interrelation of religious ideas and economic behaviour as the focus for further research. Weber's particular thesis – that Puritan ideas had influenced the development of capitalism – became the subject of a voluminous literature" (Bendix, Max Weber, an intellectual portrait, p. 71f).         Archive of 23 WPA Federal Theatre Project Photographs

A collection of 23 different WPA Federal Theatre Project photographs. Circa 1930. Each is 8" x 10" black and white. All but a couple have the stamped backmark "Please Credit WPA Federal Theatre Project Photos" or a similar variant of that message. All are formal portraits of actors, some of them obviously of the quirky character variety. Condition overall is near fine or better with a very few having creases or small tears. Slight evidence suggests these were for a Broadway-based group of actors. .

MONTANER SIMON AÑO 1930 - Don Quijote de la Mancha. 1930. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        History of the Peloponnesian War

Ashendene Press, 1930. Folio full cream vellum, spine with seven raised bands, lettered in gilt The History of the Peloponnesian War (Greek: π ) is a historical account of the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC), which was fought between the Peloponnesian League (led by Sparta) and the Delian League (led by Athens). It was written by Thucydides, an Athenian historian who also happened to serve as an Athenian general during the war. His account of the conflict is widely considered to be a classic and regarded as one of the earliest scholarly works of history. The History is divided into eight books. Analyses of the History generally occur in one of two camps. On the one hand, some scholars view the work as an objective and scientific piece of history. The judgment of J. B. Bury reflects his traditional interpretation of the work: "[The History is] severe in its detachment, written from a purely intellectual point of view, unencumbered with platitudes and moral judgments, cold and critical." ] On the other hand, in keeping with more recent interpretations that are associated with reader-response criticism, the History can be read as a piece of literature rather than an objective record of the historical events. This view is embodied in the words of W. R. Connor, who describes Thucydides as "an artist who responds to, selects and skillfully arranges his material, and develops its symbolic and emotional potential." Benjamin Jowett (1817-1893) was born in Peckham, Kent, and grew up in Camberwell, the third of nine children. His father was a furrier originally from a Yorkshire family that, for three generations, had been supporters of the Evangelical movement in the Church of England; and an author of a metrical translation of the Old Testament Psalms. His mother was a Langhorne, related to John Langhorne, the poet and translator of Plutarch. At twelve, Jowett was placed on the foundation of St Paul's School (then in St Paul's Churchyard) where he soon gained a reputation as a precocious classical scholar. Aged eighteen he was awarded an open scholarship to Balliol College, Oxford, where he remained for the rest of his life. He went up in 1836, and was quickly recognized as one of the leading Oxford Dons of his generation, made a Fellow while still an undergraduate in 1838; he graduated with first-class honours in 1839. He was renowned as an influential tutor and administrative reformer in the University of Oxford, and as a translator of Plato and Thucydides -wikipedia Vellum a little toned, very slight rubbing at corners and joints, interior pristine With Philip C.       New York: Coward, McCann, 1930. First edition. Hardcover. Very good or thereabouts in a very good or slightly less than dust jacket, with the jacket showing chipping at the upper and lower front panel, an old tape repair at the spine. Spine cloth slightly toned, boards slightly soiled. This copy inscribed with a drawing of men on a trapeze and signed by Gropper on the title page verso, which is detached but cleanly so, a minor repair. As is often said, a pioneering form of the modern graphic novel, not often found in a jacket, and found even less often when signed.

New York, 1930. [2]pp. on a single. octavo sheet of stationery. Old fold lines, minor wear. Near fine. Noted art collector and Winslow Homer patron Thomas B. Clarke writes to Mr. [Mantle] Fielding on artistic business matters, discussing the current values of American art, etc. In part: "...Mr. Cochran (of J.P. Morgan & Co. has given several more American paintings to Andover Academy, among them 'Eight Bells' by Winslow Homer. In the 'Nineties' Homer asked me to come to his studio...on Washington Square. I went there and he said 'Clarke here is a picture that I have just finished working on, and I have named it 'Eightbells.' I said 'Mr. Homer will you sell it to me?' He replied 'Yes, and I will accept $400 from you.' In 1899... it fetched over $4000.... Levy sold 'Eight Bells' later to one of his clients.... This buyer 'parted with it' very recently for the Andover collection for the sum of seventy thousand dollars! Some commentators upon this sale say that this price was low! The rapid advances of certain works of art by American painters seems very remarkable to me.... My inclination for the selection of oil portraits from life was manifest in the sale of my collection, and at the end of the sale I started to accumulate the paintings now hanging in the Museum in Fairmount Park Phila. and in my residence here (there are 171 in all - I feel like hiding!). ... You and I have known of marvellous increases in the values of portraits of Washington by Stuart, Peale and others. Copley, Trumbull, Sully et al also lead in the great advances. In coming years will portraits by these men mount in value? I feel such a situation is absolutely certain...." Thomas Benedict Clarke (1848-1931), American patron and art collector, is considered by many to be the foremost patron of American painters during the late 1800s. He was praised for his attention to American artists at a time when they considered themselves neglected or ignored. Mantle Fielding is remembered today for his works on portraits of Washington.

        Moby Dick or The Whale

Chicago: The Lakeside Press,, 1930. 3 volumes, quarto. Recent black morocco, titles and pictorial blocks to the spines and front boards in silver copied from the original, black and white patterned paper, silver edges. Illustrated throughout by Rockwell Kent. Fine. First Rockwell Kent edition, limited to 1,000 sets, signed by the author on the limitation page at the end of volume 3 . It is considered to be one of the finest editions of Melville's masterpiece and one of the great American illustrated books of the 20th century. In 1926 Rockwell Kent (1882–1971), then just beginning to establish his fame as an artist, was approached by R. R. Donnelley and Sons to illustrate a new edition of Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast. Kent demurred, suggesting Moby Dick instead. Kent was given complete freedom to design and illustrate the three-volume set. The resulting work has been hailed as a masterpiece of 20th-century book illustration and credited with reviving public interest in a sublime but difficult novel.
