Tiny brown speckles (light foxing) to a few pages at the beginning and end. Slight waviness to the upper margin of some pages. No stain. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. First Edition (1. Auflage). First printing of the standard work by the Nazis' chief ideologist. The year of publication, 1930, is imprinted on the title page. Bound in the original gilt decorated black cloth. Alfred Rosenberg (1893-1946) was editor of the Nazi party organ, VÖLKISCHER BEOBACHTER. It was his anti-Semitic, anti-Christian, and neo-pagan book, DER MYTHUS DES 20. JAHRHUNDERTS [The Myth of the Twentieth Century], that supplied Adolf Hitler and the Nazis with a philosophical and pseudo-scientific basis for their racist doctrine. In 1933, Rosenberg was appointed foreign affairs secretary of the party. He became minister for the occupied Eastern territories in 1941. Following conviction at the Nuremberg war crimes trials, Rosenberg was executed in 1946. With the possible exception of Hitler's MEIN KAMPF, Rosenberg's DER MYTHUS DES 20. JAHRHUNDERTS was the book that most influenced the German people in their acceptance of Nazi ideology and doctrine. This copy is from the library of Radio Munich, with two small ink stamps: "Eigentum des Radio München." The association with Radio Munich is important for two reasons: 1) Propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels and the Nazis relied heavily on radio to disseminate their ideology and to build support among the German people. 2) Nazi party headquarters was in Munich and Radio Munich was at the epicenter of the Nazi propaganda machine during the Third Reich's early years. In a speech, entitled: The Radio as the Eighth Great Power, given on 18 August 1933, Goebbels said: "Future generations may conclude that the radio had as great an intellectual and spiritual impact on the masses as the printing press… It would not have been possible for us to take power or to use it in the ways we have without the radio... It is no exaggeration to say that the German revolution, at least in the form it took, would have been impossible without... the radio." Hans Fritzsche, a leading Nazi radio broadcaster, wrote: "Without exaggerating, one can say that there is no country in the world where the radio is anywhere near as intensive an intermediary between the government and the people as in Germany." First edition of this extravagant vision of the future. The first Earl of Birkenhead (1872-1930) was a dashing figure, a 'swashbuckler' and 'ready subject for the caricaturist,' (DNB) who had a lengthy career as Solicitor General, and after 1919, Lord Chancellor.Reading The World in 2030 the knowledge that Birkenhead was drinking himself to death whilst writing comes as little surprise. It is an extraordinary work, displaying the occasional prescience of the unhinged. Amongst a very odd collection of statements about ectogenesis, the unlikelihood of future wars due to trans-national integration, scientific relativism, and the creation of a Florida-style 'playground for all Europe' in the basin of the Sahara, there is the bald announcement that atomic energy will be harnessed, that eugenics will be commonplace and the genes mapped, and that a 'mad dictator, jealous of Western progress, may precipitate a war, which will finally burn up and destroy Western civilisation'. Best of all, advances in television will mean that a busy Englishman will be able to follow 'an Australian test-match'.Accompanying the work are nine futurist plates by E. McKnight Kauffer.

        Amish Love Adventures in a Puritan Cult

      Florence, Italy: Michael Angelino Press, 1930. Blaine, Mahlon. Small quarto. 264pp. With woodcut cover illustration and five erotic, half-tone reproductions of paintings by Mahlon Blaine. This book is part of the swelling trend in the 1930's for "privately printed" erotic books, which would often be published by anonymous or pseudonymous authors and illustrators and printed with fake publication information in order to protect the creators from public backlash. This erotic tale, supposedly taken from a diary of an Amish woman telling of the scandalous sexual exploits of her mother, is one such work. Blaine's stirring illustrations bring life to the text, combining sensual lines with cunning details. Both the cover, in Blaine's bold woodcut style, and the illustrations, with their broad washes over sketched lines, have a raw quality to them, a sense of hurried energy that echoes the excitement of the reader. Near fine in wrappers, with spotting, crease to front cover, and scratch to back. Blaine, whose most respectable and recognizable works were illustrations for Edgar Rice Burroughs, John Steinbeck, and the New Yorker, published over two thousand drawings between 1917 and his death in 1969. An interesting work from this underappreciated master. (Trenary, "Mahlon Blaine, One-Eyed Visionary," p. 59).

The original zinc plates were used in the printing of this monograph, on authentically inferior paper which has subsequently toned, as is usual in this work. Posada used the symbolism of the Calavera (as pictured) as political satire.

One of 157 numbered copies on japon (total edition 177, including twenty for collaborators), signed by Schmied in the colophon. 13 x 10 inches, [32] leaves, (plus front and rear endpapers); 8 full-page color wood block illustrations, (including the cover) and 23 other designs. Original wrappers, fine condition, in publisher's blue cloth chemise and slipcase (the latter lightly used), with the bookplate of Charlotte de Biencourt, Comtesse de Cossé-Brissac. Nasti notes the incorporation in this volume of both Schmied's naturalistic style and abstract decorative motifs, and here for once the two styles seem to mesh in perfect harmony, producing the most beautiful of any of his books, and one of the most beautiful of any twentieth century volume, with complex and integrated illustrations. The title page alone according to Ritchie is "the most intricate of all Schmied's illustrations, requiring some forty-five different blocks ... it took almost two months to print that single page". The illustrations of the scribe and the man carrying a book are Schmied's self-portraits.

This is the very rare vellum edition of one of the most beautifully printed and attractively illustrated private press books of the 1930s. Inspired by such masters as Watteau, Canoletto, and Boucher, Whistler's work, including the witty drawings here surrounded by rococo frames, recall the 18th century heyday of French book illustration. Horne quotes a 1984 exhibit at the British Museum that says, "This playful essay in 18th century pastiche is, like much fine English book-making of the 1920s and 1930s, aesthetically backward-looking. Whistler's drawings are matched by a text printed in a revival of John Baskerville's 18th century types." Reginald John "Rex" Whistler (1905-44) made a name for himself in mural painting, stage design, and book illustration, and in "Gulliver," his skills as a theater designer and as a muralist align to produce what is widely regarded as his masterpiece, as well as a highspot of 20th century fine printing. Horne describes him as "one of the most gifted figures of the years between the wars," and laments that his artistic career was brought to a tragically premature end by World War II, during which Whistler died while serving as a tank troop leader in France. The Cresset Press operated between 1927 and 1931 under the direction of Dennis M. Cohen and A. I. Myers, and while its output was small, the books it produced were notable. Presswork was done at the Shakespeare Head Press run by Bernard Newdigate, perhaps the most important name in private press printing between the wars. Besides the present one, only one other copy of the Cresset Press "Gulliver" on vellum seems to have appeared at auction since 1975, and it had only six of the extra plates colored.. 343 x 235 mm. (13 1/2 x 9 1/4"). Two bound volumes plus a portfolio of plates. No. VIII OF 10 COPIES ON ROMAN VELLUM WITH AN EXTRA SET OF THE PLATES ON VELLUM, EACH OF THEM SIGNED BY THE ARTIST. Publisher's special russet morocco by Wood of London, raised bands flanked by simple blind tooling extending onto the boards, gilt titling, brass clasps and catches, gilt-ruled turn-ins, all edges gilt, vellum endleaves. The extra plates housed in silk-covered chemise bound into boards covered with matching morocco. The whole contained in two extremely fine recent morocco-backed felt-lined folding boxes with raised bands and gilt titling, giving the appearance of three book spines. The main volumes with a total of 27 engravings (26 images), as called for: a title page vignette featuring a bust of Swift (appearing in each volume), eight head- and tailpieces, five full-page maps, and 12 DELICATELY HAND-COLORED COPPER-ENGRAVED PLATES (including two frontispieces) BY REX WHISTLER, each within an ornate baroque-style frame, AND WITH AN ADDITIONAL SUITE OF ALL 26 engraved images (the same 12 images that are colored in the main volumes also colored by hand in the extra suite), each of the 26 extra images signed by Whistler and separately matted. Original tissue guards. Ransom, p. 7. Spines of the text and plate volumes rather darkened (though evenly so), the morocco boards covering the plate chemise a bit soiled and somewhat scratched (the scratches well refurbished), but the original deluxe bindings showing almost no other wear and retaining much of their original appeal. Fully collated. Puzzle generally fine. Envelope toned and creased throughout with several small holes at edges. An attractive example of Theodor Geisel's work as a commercial artist, predating his carreer as a children's book author. This puzzle, one of many notable advertising designs Geisel produced as a part of his longstanding contract with Standard Oil, is a scene showing Essolube defeating the five "Moto Monsters," a cast of characters symbolizing the perils of using poor quality motor oil. Signed Dr. Seuss, the puzzle shows elements of the illustrator's style that would later become key components in the the author's iconic childrens books.

An edition of a rare legendary eight-page Azerbaijani satirical political illustrated magazine in Azari, Russian and Turkic language, published in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 1930. - This is a rare surviving example of the Molla Nasraddin magazine, published between 1906-1931 for the Arabic, as well as partly Russian and Turkish readers. The name was inspired by the 13th century Muslim cleric Nasreddin, who is known for his funny stories and anecdotes. The magazine, illustrated by contemporary famous illustrators, in a style of Honoré Daumier or Toulouse-Lautrec, but with Arabic humour, depicted satirically various social phænomena, such as inequality, cultural assimilation, and corruption. The magazine was published in Tiflis (from 1906 to 1917), Tabriz (in 1921) and Baku (from 1922 to 1931) by the Azerbaijani editor Jalil Huseyngulu oglu Mammadguluzaden (1866-1932). Because of the historical events in the region, as well of a fragile paper, the magazine was printed on, the survival rate of such publications is very rare. In 2011 an exhibition, accompanied by a publication Molla Nasreddin: The Magazine that Would&#146;ve, Could&#146;ve, Should&#146;ve, was dedicated to this magazine.
