        [CALLIGRAPHIC MANUSCRIPT] From Gallipoli.

[United Kingdom, c.1930]. Large octavo, original full dark blue morocco binding with triple gilt rule and ornament, spines with raised bands and lettered in gilt; inner boards with gilt rule; calligraphic manuscript in red, black and gold ink on vellum, [11] pages, each page with decorative borders in red, black and gold; the text comprises an extract from Masefield's book Gallipoli (1916), which describes the gathering of ships on the 23rd April prior to the landings on the 25th; the extract is preceded and followed by quotes from the Song of Roland(also used by Masefield in his book), which are rendered in red ink. Fine and unique. The poet John Masefield's Gallipoli was based on a report he had written for the British Foreign Office on the disastrous Dardanelles campaign. It was one of the first widely published accounts of the campaign. Unflinchingly realistic in its descriptions, it helped to enshrine in legend the heroic deeds and deplorable suffering of the soldiers of the ANZAC contingent. Masefield believed that, in spite of the campaign's ultimate strategic failure and the enormous human sacrifice it had demanded, Gallipoli was a glorious event, in the same way that other military defeats throughout history have been viewed by the losing side as events that shape national pride and character. 'All the thousands of men aboard [the ships] gathered on deck to see, till each rail was thronged. These men had come from all parts of the British world, from Africa, Australia, Canada, India, the Mother Country, New Zealand, and remote islands in the sea. They had said goodbye to home that they might offer their lives in the cause we stand for. In a few hours at most, as they well knew, perhaps a tenth of them would have looked their last on the sun, and be a part of foreign earth or dumb things that the tides push. Many of them would have disappeared for ever from the knowledge of man, blotted from the book of life none would know how - by a fall or chance shot in the darkness, in the blast of a shell, or alone, like a hurt beast, in some scrub or gully, far from comrades and the English speech and the English singing. And perhaps a third of them would be mangled, blinded or broken, lamed, made imbecile or disfigured, with the colour and the taste of life taken from them, so that they would never more move with comrades nor exult in the sun. And those not taken thus would be under the ground, sweating in the trench, carrying sandbags up the sap, dodging death and danger, without rest or food or drink, in the blazing sun, or the frost of the Gallipoli night, till death seemed relaxation and a wound a luxury ... they went like kings in a pageant to the imminent death.' (extract from pages 4-5 of the manuscript)

        Pendragon [SIGNED AND INSCRIBED]

Methuen and Co. Ltd London (1930) - First Edition. Very scarce Arthurian novel in which "[King] Arthur, stripped of mythical trappings but not of romance, figures as the very human and very lovable saviour of Britain. Other half-legendary names, such as those of Merlin and Anurin, are also made real, and the story culminates in the heroic climax of Mount Badon, the last triumph of Roman--British chivalry against Saxon barbarism". Reprinted in 2003 and reviewed by Cindy Lynn Speer thusly: "A totally different take on the Arthurian tales, it kills the inevitable. we know there are points to which each Arthurian story hangs parts of its plot on. Arthur getting the sword, Guenevere and Lancelot, the final, terrible battle. these things are no longer definite. Sometimes what makes a story beloved is the familiarity. There's a comfort in knowing what comes next. (Heck, I can probably recite, word for word, the script to Excalibur.) But after a time, even re-interpretations of re-interpretations get stale. Pendragon does not suffer from this at all. The story, with its non-magical, completely historically researched base is completely new, and therefore a more pleasurable read. You are still spending time with Arthur and many of the familiar faces, while having the uncertainty that comes with reading a story for the very first time. Pendragon has been a popular, if rare, volume in the libraries of many Arthurian enthusiasts for years." This copy inscribed and signed by Faraday at half-title in 1949. Found in The New Arthurian Encyclopedia [Norris J. Lacy], A Companion to Romance [Corinne Saunders], The Arthurian Handbook [Norris J. Lacy], A Bibliography of Modern Arthuriana (1500 - 2000) [Ann F. Howey]. Very Good, cover mildly askew, front endpaper removed exposing webbing at front inner hinge (but still firm), in Very Good dustjacket, vertical crease at spine.         Hills and the Sea, Malibu Coast

1930. Wood engraving Approximately 6 x 8 inches image area plus margins on wove paper, matted, glazed and framed Paul Hambleton Landacre (9 July 1893, Columbus, Ohio - 3 June 1963, Los Angeles, California) was one of the outstanding printmakers of the modern era. His distinguished body of work was largely responsible for elevating the wood engraving to an art form in twentieth-century America. Landacre's linocuts and wood engravings of landscapes, still lifes, nudes, and abstractions are celebrated for their technical virtuosity and mastery of design. In March 1932, the artist and his wife moved to a rustic house in the Echo Park neighborhood, also known as Edendale, near downtown Los Angeles, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Landacre died in 1963 soon after--and emotionally resulting from--the death of his wife who had been an essential working companion for 38 years, even helping the artist late in his life pull impressions from the formidable Washington hand press. In March 2006, with the growing appreciation of Landacre's artistic significance, their hillside home was declared a City of Los Angeles landmark (Historic Cultural Monument No. 839). Repositories of his work include the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; Library of Congress; Los Angeles Public Library; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Oakland Museum; New York Public Library; Philadelphia Museum; San Francisco, Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts; and the Seattle Museum Fine No. 32 of 50, signed by Landacre in pencil lower left.       1930 - 280x220mm. An original sequence of nine caricatures, in ink on paper, depicting village cricketers batting, with the legend, "I didn't mind bowling at the station master or - the policeman - or the butcher's boy - or the butcher - or the parson - or the publican - or Giles the farmer - but when the local quoits champion hit me into the next county - I thought it was time to retire." Signed and dated "Hillington 1930". Mounted, framed and glazed. Arthur Mailey (1886-1967) was a successful leg break bowler, taking 99 wickets from Australia in 21 tests between 1921 and 1929, however his lasting talent was as a cartoonist and he had a particular knack of caricaturing his team mates and opponents, his ready wit creating a humorous narrative with a sequence of cartoons. He drew for the Sydney Arrow and Bulletin and the London Bystander as well as writing and illustrating a number of books, most notably his account of the Bodyline series, And Then Came Larwood and his autobiography, 10 for 66 And All That. Although individual sketches appear occasionally complete cartoon sequences are rarely seen in commerce. Mailey retired from first class cricket in 1930. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        The Theory of Fundamental Processes

First edition, first printing. From the library of pioneering female physicist Nina Byers (1930-2014), who made important contributions to particle physics and superconductivity and had a humorous personal connection with Feynman, earning her a mention in Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman. Byers received her bachelors in physics at Berkeley and then studied under Murray Gell-Mann and Gregor Wenzl at Chicago, completing her thesis on pi-mesic atoms in 1956. In 1961 (the same year that this book was published) she joined the faculty at UCLA where she worked on particle physics as "the first and the only female in the Physics department for 20 years" (Los Angeles Times obituary). Byers remained at UCLA for the rest of her career, through for several years she split her time between Los Angeles and the UK after she was appointed the first female physics lecturer at Oxford. During the 1970s and 80s Byers and her students were engaged in cutting edge research on areas such as gauge theories of the electroweak interactions, quarkonium, and bound state systems (UCLA Physics & Astronomy department obituary). At the same time she was deeply involved with the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. "Nina served as President of the APS Forum on History of Physics, a position earned through her dedication to promoting the understanding of two weighty subjects: the role of women in physics, and the examination of physicists' role in the development and deployment of nuclear weapons" (UCLA obituary). One of Byer's most significant projects in this regard was the web archive Contributions of 20th Century Women to Physics, which includes detailed information on 83 female physicists. She also edited the volume Out of the Shadows: Contributions of Twentieth-Century Women to Physics (2006), and was a committed campaigner against nuclear weapons. In a lifetime of accomplishments, perhaps the most unusual aspect of her legacy is her warm and comical appearance in Feynman's classic memoir Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman. Byers was put in charge of a series of physics colloquia at UCLA and wanted to include some speakers on other aspects of culture. Looking around for an expert on Mayan mathematics, she was hitting dead ends until another professor recommended Feynman, who had worked on the Dresden Codex in his spare time. As Feynman recalled it, "She nearly died! She's trying to bring some culture to the physicists, and the only way to do it is to get a physicist!" Feynman's talk was very well received, and to thank him, Byers gave him some handsome colour reproductions of the Codex. The two became good friends and remained close for the rest of Feynman's life. The present text, The Theory of Fundamental Processes, was one of Feynman's first two published books, appearing in 1961 along with Quantum Electrodynamics. Both were lightly edited versions of lectures transcribed by students. The books became influential within the physics community and contributed to Feynman's growing celebrity. As a particle physicist, Byers would have been particularly interested in Theory of Fundamental Processes, a key work at the cutting edge of her field. A price sticker on the lower cover indicates that she purchased this copy at the UCLA student shop, and the ink stains, pencilled notes on the cover and in the contents list, and other signs of use confirm that that she probably consulted it as a reference work, and perhaps used it as a textbook for her advanced students. A wonderful association copy. A Lecture Note Volume. Notes Corrected by H. T. Yura. New York: W. A. Benjamin, Inc., 1961. Octavo. Original cream wrappers printed in blue, black, and orange. Ownership signature of UCLA physicist Nina Byers to the upper wrapper, UCLA student store price ticket to the lower wrapper. Some additional notes by Byers in pencil on the upper wrapper and check marks by chapters in the contents list. A little creasing, rubbing, and toning to the wrappers, some light ink stains on the lower cover. A very good copy.

ORIGINAL 1930 TYPED LETTER, SIGNED (re: The Maltese Falcon, The Glass Key & The Thin Man)

1930 - Hammett, Dashiell. ONE PAGE TYPED LETTER, SIGNED ["Sincerely, Dashiell Hammett"]. 135 East 38th Street, New York, April 21st, 1930. Highly desirable unpublished early letter from one of Hammett's most creatively fruitful years in which he makes mention of all three of his greatest novels. To "Dear Mr. Hammett" (Walter Hammett of Yale University in New Haven, who had initially written wondering -- incorrectly as it turned out -- if they shared any kin), it reads: "Thanks a lot for the latest of your always kind notes. The Falcon seems to be going over pretty well and I think Earl Boothe's going to produce it on the stage in the Fall if I can get time off from the current book to do the dramatization. The next book, 'The Glass Key' is scheduled for publication in September or October, and then 'The Thin Man' and 'The Darkened Face' in February and August, 1931. Beyond that deponent saith not. Best of luck to you with the poetry and otherwise." The letter, written only two months after the book publication of THE MALTESE FALCON has some irony to it as Dashiell Hammett's precision in rattling off titles and publication dates bore no reality to what came to pass. THE GLASS KEY wouldn't be published until 1931; THE THIN MAN didn't appear until 1934. As for "The Darkened Face" -- there is a fragment of a manuscript with that title at the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin. It now appears to have been a planned novel which never came to full fruition. Nor did Hammett write a stage version of THE MALTESE FALCON for Earl Boothe; instead the novel was almost immediately adapted to film, released by Warner Brothers Studios as a pre-code 1931 crime drama full of sexual innuendo starring Ricardo Cortez and Bebe Daniels. The Selected Letters of Dashiell Hammett 1921-1960 (edited by Richard Layman) were indeed "selected from nearly one thousand letters" yet only a mere four letters date - as this letter does -- from 1930, the year Hammett published THE MALTESE FALCON. Apart from two neat folds, the letter is in Fine, crisp condition. Custom slipcase. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Prijs: ?750,- (incl. lijst).

Large 4°, 12 text pages with partly coloured illustrations within text and full-page illustrations (Very Good, partly uncut in the upper part, tiny tears in margins). - Tashkent, Uzbekistan 1930. This is an edition of an extremely rare political-satirical magazine, published in Turkic language in different scripts in Tashkent in Uzbekistan. The magazine ridicules the contemporary political situation and the pope, with the title page showing him supported by the rich, Fascists, and Muslims. The magazine was published from 1923 on under different spelling of the same word Mu?tum, My?tum and Muštum, meaning The Fist. This is the April edition, published in 1930. We could not trace any examples of the magazine in institurtions worldwide. Two German libraries (University Library of Tübingen and the State Library of Berlin) possess some separate editions from 1980s and 1990s.

BUNNY AND BROWNIE: The Adventures of George & Wiggle.

A&C Black, London. 1930 - Darkening and rubbing to spine and boards, which are a bit sprung but very sound. Decorative paper label on front. Some occasional slight spots of foxing to pages ow a very clean copy internally. A previous owner has very lightly and carefully coloured in the rear endpaper design with a faint pink shading and, less neatly, two of the in-text line drawings. investigation of a small deformation two thirds of the way down the spine dislodged the tip of a crayon, caught within the spine, which, by the shade of brown, was from the crayon used to make the colouring many years ago. Ow very good indeed. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Japanese Folio of Kimono Fabric Samples

      - N.d., circa 1930. 37.5 by 28 cm. 36 panels with content, 16 of which have large swatches of fabric with floral, geometric, wave, foliage, butterfly and other motives, often combined in unusual, collage-like ways. The facing pages have loose line illustrations, sometimes heightened with silvery metallic sprinkles, that repeat some of the decorative element(s) of the fabric, such as a particular flower formation, or supplement it, as a fabric dominated by wavy formations has an illsutraiton of seaside birds and a paddle wheel on the opposite page. The front cover has a patchwork of various fabric designs as well. The book has a beautiful cohesion, and it is an object of beauty that transcends the lovely fabrics by themselves. Light wear to the outside boards.

        Not Without Laughter

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1930 - Some relatively light edge and corner wear. Spine is somewhat sunned and has a small area of damage between title and author. Overall book shows expected aging from time and reading. This copy is from the library of civil rights activist and has his signature and bookplate along with the date (1930) and the notation "Tuskegee Institute." Moon left his position at Tuskegee in 1930 and went on to work for the NAACP as Public Relations director and eventually as editor of The Crisis. Moon also wrote books on African-American voting rights and other important subjects. Moon's signature and the Tuskegee inscription make this an important association between Langston Hughes, The Tuskegee Institute, the NAACP and, of course, Henry Lee Moon. ; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 324 pages; Signed by Associated [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Autograph draft of poem to Liese Karr

Zurich 1930 - Einstein, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph draft of an untitled poem in German, written to Liese Karr. 1 sheet, written on the back of a mimeographed slip, two lines canceled but legible. Zürich, 1930 (dated in pencil by Einstein’s secretary, Helen Dukas, in the upper right corner). Tear at vertical crease, small chip in one margin, but very good. A charming example of Einstein’s gift for light verse. In November 1930 Einstein visited Zürich to be fêted as a special guest of honor at the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology—the famous ETH, where he had received his diploma in physics in 1900 and later served as professor of theoretical physics. Einstein’s host during his stay in Zürich was Frau Liese Karr, widow of a grain merchant distantly related to Einstein’s mother; Einstein had known the Karr family since his student days, when the Karrs had kept "a watchful but discreet eye" on him during his time at the ETH (Clark, Einstein: The Life and Times, p. 25). Einstein’s poem, thanking Frau Karr for her hospitality, appears to have been drafted on the day of his departure by train for Berlin. The poem can be translated as follows: Dear Liese, before I rush off I still send you this line I heard many Swiss citizens Who talked untiringly This celebration was not in vain For it filled up my purse Valiant men, true and worthy, Not for nothing sparkles their plumage Now that it’s all over Can I find rest again Now [ ] it’s enough Today at four my train leaves To you, however, full of regret I say farewell It was cozy at your house You, your cat, your child and your feast.
