Prijs: ?750,- (incl. lijst).

        IT WALKS BY NIGHT

New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1930., 1930. First edition. First edition. Publisher's "A-E" code on copyright page. Author's first novel. Former owner's neat inked name on the front pastedown sheet (completely covered by the dust jacket flap), with yellow Harper's seal at back of book removed (as is nearly always the case), leaving only a tiny remnant attached to page.211 and the rear fly leaf. Near Fine, bright copy in dust jacket with gentle sunning to spine, with light restoration to the spine ends and corners. Carr's first novel, a formidable locked-room mystery introducing his flamboyant Parisian character Henri Bencolin. Bencolin's case involves "an impossible murder in a gambling club - the victim, seen to enter an empty room with all entrances under observation, is subsequently found there, beheaded" (Twentieth-Century Crime and Mystery Writers (2nd ed.), p.146). Dust jacket promotional blurb says "When the police burst into the ante-room of a smart Paris gambling house, they find a mangled body thrown across the floor, while staring at them from the center of the empty room was the severed head of the Duc de Seligny. So begins a mystery story as weird and terrifying as any ever contrived by Poe. All the wiles of Bencolin, most satanic, most lovable of modern detectives, were needed for its solution." A crime fiction highspot housed in a clamshell case with the dust jacket design shown on the case.

        A Coast Pomo Girl

Suffolk Engraving Company, Boston 1930 - Photogravure after Edward Curtis, printed by the Suffolk Engraving Company, wove paper (watermarked 'Van Gelder Zonen Made in Holland'). Excellent condition. A breath-taking image from "The North American Indian", the grandest illustrated work ever produced in the United States, the most important illustrated work on Native Americans, and the single greatest book in Western Americana. Only the double-elephant folio edition of Audubon's "Birds of America" surpasses Curtis in its massive ambition and beauty of execution. ".Because of the singular combination of qualities with which he has been blessed, and because of his extraordinary success in making and using his opportunities. (Curtis) has been able to do what no other man has ever done; what, as far as we can see, no other man could do. He is an artist who works out of doors and not in a closet. He is a close observer, whose qualities of mind and body fit him to make his observations out in the field, surrounded by the wild life he commemorates. He has lived on intimate terms with many different tribes of the mountains and the plains. He knows them as they hunt, as they travel, as they go about their various avocations on the march and in camp. He knows their medicine men and their sorcerers, their chiefs and warriors, their young men and maidens. He has not only seen their vigorous outward existence, but has caught glimpses, such as few white men ever catch, into that strange spiritual and mental life of theirs; from whose inner most recesses all white men are forever barred." (Theodore Roosevelt, Foreword to Volume I) Renowned for their unrivalled basketry skills, the Pomo tribe inhabited Northern California. Edward Curtis was fascinated by the story of the Native Americans from childhood. His in-depth knowledge of the various tribes increased in parallel with his skill as a photographer during his participation in a number of scientific expeditions in the 1890s. In 1896, Curtis began to take photographs of the Native American tribes (by 1930 he had taken over 40,000 negatives of eighty tribes) and evolve his hugely ambitious plan for a comprehensive work which would illustrate his romantic vision of Native American life before the disastrous impact of European contact. With the enthusiastic support of President Theodore Roosevelt (who wrote the foreword to the present work) and the financial backing of J. Pierpont Morgan (Curtis was introduced to him by Roosevelt), the publishing project finally got under way in 1906. Pierpont Morgan died in 1913 just before the completion of the ninth volume, but his son agreed to continue underwriting the project; between them, they eventually contributed about a third of the $1,500,000 cost. What had originally been projected to take five or six years eventually stretched to twenty-three, finally reaching a conclusion in 1930 but leaving Curtis a broken and bankrupt man. Nonetheless, his grand design was completed, and his work remains as his monument. Cf. Naef & Goldschmidt The Truthful Lens 40; cf. Howes C-965.

        The World Crisis: 1911-1914

London: Thornton Butterworth, Ltd., 1930. First edition, 8th printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed copy of the British first edition, first printing, eighth and final printing of the first volume of the Churchill's monumental history of the First World War, in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role. This volume covers the first four years Churchill spent as First Lord of the Admiralty, as well as the beginning of the war. Many consider the British edition aesthetically superior to the U.S., with its larger volumes and shoulder notes summarizing the subject of each page. Unfortunately, the smooth navy cloth of the British first editions proved quite susceptible to wear and dulling, the contents prone to spotting and toning. Truly bright and clean bindings are seldom seen without the original dust jackets, and the dust jackets are exceptionally scarce. There were eight printings (between 1923 and 1930) of the first edition of this first 1911-1914 volume. This jacketed 1930 eighth and final printing of closely conforms to the appearance of the 1923 first printing. The dust jacket print is the same on the spine, front panel, and front flap, with substantive differences only to the rear panel, which adds advertisements for the subsequent volumes in the series, and the rear flap, which adds “Press Notices”. The binding is identical to that of the first printing with the sole exception of the addition of a single, five-pointed gilt star on the spine, denoting that this is the first volume. Given the similar shelf appearance of both jacket and binding, this copy offers the prospect of filling a jacketed first edition set at a far more modest cost than a first printing. Condition is near fine plus in a dust jacket that approaches near fine. The blue cloth binding is square, tight, immaculately clean, and strikingly bright, with sharp corners, perfectly rounded spine, vivid spine gilt, and no appreciable wear. The contents remain crisp and bright; the volume feels unread. A trivial hint of spotting appears confined to the otherwise clean page edges. A single previous owner name is neatly inked to the upper front free endpaper. The front free endpaper and facing front pastedown also show small rust stains consonant with two small paperclips that may have been laid in at one point. The dust jacket is complete apart from fractional chipping at the spine head. The panels and flap folds remain bright. The jacket spine shows moderate, uniform toning and a few faint stains, but nonetheless provides quite good shelf appearance. The jacket is protected beneath a removable, archival quality clear cover. Of The World Crisis, Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent part of his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose.         Choix

Paris : Editions Iribe, [1930]. Quarto, lettered boards with glassine cover (split, as usual), spiral bound, pp. 32; 7 gold and silver foil plates with acetate overlays (the metallic plates corroded, as always), else very good. An icon of art deco design by the legendary Paul Iribe. Limited to 800 copies, this one of the 400 copies hors commerce, with a presentation inscription from the printer. "This book, titled "Choix" (Choice), is the second of 800 copies that were published by Paul Iribe, a French illustrator, cartoonist, designer, decorator and art director, in 1930. Lamenting that French design had become "poor" and "americanized" in the years since the First World War, Iribe argues that the genius of French design lies in what he calls the "principe de l'arabesque" (principle of the arabesque). Facing the economic downturn of the 1930, Iribe is inviting his fellow French designers to choose to return to the "arabesque France" in design rather than to continue following the fashions imposed by the "cube Europe". To do so, after 31 pages with written text explaining his purpose, he presents seven plates of printed overlays over gold and silver board images depicting styles of the 1930's in home decor and fashion, as examples of industrial designs to illustrate the principle of the arabesque." - Metropolitan Museum of Art website.

        VILE BODIES

Chapman & Hall 1930 - First edition. Original marbled cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper, "For David & Tamara with love from Evelyn (published Jan. 14th 1930)." A very good copy indeed with slight wear to spine ends and bottom corners. Page edges browned and a little foxing throughout, with a few small red stains along the bottom edge of the preliminaries. Striking orange and black pictorial title page designed by the author. David Talbot Rice met Waugh at Oxford, where they, along with Brian Howard, Anthony Powell and Harold Acton were part of a set known as the Hypocrites Club, which was an influence on Waugh's depiction of the louche undergraduate behaviour in Brideshead Revisited. Tamara was also an undergraduate at the same time and became a close friend of Waugh's before being romantically pursued by Talbot Rice. They married in 1927 and both pursued successful careers in Byzantine and Islamic art. They remained on friendly terms with Waugh, Tamara being particularly supportive on the break up of his first marriage. Vile Bodies is the author's successful second novel, lampooning the rise of the 'Bright Young Things'. It is uncommon in an inscribed state. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
