Photograph album documenting a Marine's life while stationed in pre-World War II Guam

, San Diego and Guam. San Diego and Guam. Album. Very good. This 5.5" x 8" album contains over 40 pages filled with approximately 160 photographs ranging in size from 2" x 3" to 3.5" to 5.75". All of the photographs are attached with mounting corners. Most are captioned on the page in white ink which is faint but legible. The front of the album features a somewhat faded gilt Eagle, Globe, and Anchor (EGA) logo with "U. S. Marines" below. The photographs, pages, and album are all in nice shape. Most of the images are of Guam, although several show Marines at and views of Califonia and Hawaii including a nice image of derricks at the Los Angeles oil field and a couple of the transport ship, U.S.S. Henderson. The Guam images include: 1) Piti, Apra Harbor, and other scenes of Guam including beaches, thatch buildings, water buffalo, an outrigger canoe, and a rare snowstorm, 2) Guamanian women, 3) Commercial and military vessels including the Asiatic Fleet, 4) Marines (parades, individuals, etc.) and Marine facilities (barracks, tent camps, etc.), 5) An identified Marine driving an official staff car with an EGA logo on the door, 6) Marine aircraft in flight (They appear to be Curtis HS-2L Flying Boats and a Curtis SOC-1 Observation Seaplane.), 7) A Marine artillery battery firing a celebratory salute for Memorial Day, 1930, and using the same guns during beachfront training (They appear to be French-made Model 1897 75 mm Model 1897 field guns.) 8) A bivouac and convoy with trucks and a 10-Ton Artillery Tractor, 10) and more. A scarce and very nice visual record of U. S. Marine Corps life in the Pacific in the years between the World Wars.

        The Collected Sonnets

Joh. Enschede for Halcyon Press / A.A.M. Stols, Maastricht, Brussels and London 1930 - One of 16 extra-illustrated copies (16 full-page illustrations, the regular edition has 11) on pearl-white imperial Japanese vellum w. 3 extra suites of the portrait and the plates: one on pearl-white imperial Japanese vellum, one on Japanese vellum, and one on Dutch Pannekoek paper with the watermark "The Halcyon Press A.A.M. Stols Maastricht". Wright has signed every extra image in full (48 total). Beautifully bound (original binding) by Louis Malcorps (signed) in cherry Niger morocco. Wright's image of a female nude blocked in gold on the upper cover. Contents fine, binding near fine (tiny 1/16 inch nick in top gutter), spine just a touch lighter than the boards. A very beautiful binding. This copy comes with a small portfolio containing the original prospectus and 3 rejected proofs of the plates, signed and/or annotated in pencil by Buckland Wright. Note that the colophon calls for five rejects. These rejects are inferior strikes on inferior paper of the final-state plates, not variant images, so not very interesting either way. The entire production is housed in a custom morocco-edged slipcase with only minor shelfwear. The pearl-white Japanese vellum plates are incredibly vivid, the best strikes of any John Buckland Wright images that I have seen. Reid A1(b). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Scrapbook]: Pittsburgh Area Families 1908-1930

Pennsylvania 1930 - Quarto. Measuring 10" x 12". Green pebbled cloth with leather corners and spine with "Scrapbook" stamped in gilt on the spine. A collection of 243 sepia toned or black and white photographs measuring 2.5" x 3.5" to 3.5" x 5.5" affixed to white pages with captions, as well as related ephemera. Very good minus album with removed photos, cracked spine, and worn edges with near fine photographs. A photo scrapbook beginning around 1908 from the Pittsburgh area of Pennsylvania centering on the families of H. Leibold and Wilbur K. Steele. Included are group photos and scenes of upper middle class life in Pennsylvania. They include posing around new cars, attending an automobile party in 1917, photos with their horse "Dave," and on vacations to Gettsyburg, Texas, Niagara Falls, and Georgian Bay in Ontario. Another vacation page shows a group of passengers, including the Steele family, on a steamship to Cuba in 1916. The two families were part of the Pittsburgh Field Club which boasted a golf course designed in 1914 by Alexander H. Findlay and which hosted the PGA Championship in 1937. Photos of the group can be seen here lounging on the green and posing with golf clubs captioned, "W.K. Steele and party," as well as solo pictures of Leibold golfing. Steele is also pictured at rail stations with overturned train cars. A fishing trip in Georgian Bay shows Mr. and Mrs. Steele with friends in rowboats, the ladies watching from the pier, and the men posing with their catch. Also included from the trip is a tin type depicting a fairly large group of men posing. Interspersed throughout the album are newspaper clippings from the area, a Red Cross membership card, and a few letters. Five pages at the end of the album are dedicated to clippings of Charles Lindbergh. An extensive album depicting the life of well-to-do Pennsylvanians over the course of two decades. The author's first separately published work - he had earlier contributed to Our Exagmination Round His Factification for Incamination of ''Work in Progress''. Very good. The rear half of the wraparound band is missing, but this doesn't affect the announcement printed on the front that this work ''was awarded the £10 prize for the best poem on Time in a competition judged by Richard Aldington and Nancy Cunard''.

Photo album]: Young Woman's College Album from 1924 to 1930 in Ypsilanti, Michigan Featuring a Photograph of Mary Pickford

Ypsilanti, Michigan / Virginia / California 1930 - Oblong octavo measuring 8" x 6". 59pp. String-tied black leather over stiff paper boards. Contains 218 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 2.5" x 1.5" and 4.5" x 2.75" with captions, with additional ephemera from 1924 to 1930. Tears and chips with some pages detached but present thus very good with near fine photographs with tiny tears and creases. The photo album contains a plethora of photographs featuring Esther Davis and her adventures. Most pictures are of the three Davis daughters; Alice, Rachel, and Esther either posed or candid shots with their friends taken at Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Esther Davis is seen dancing and smiling with all her glee club members, standing outside wearing fancy clothing or costumes, and graduating high school and college. Esther Davis lived in the Bessie Leach Priddy House, a sorority, at Michigan State Normal College. While most of the pictures are from Michigan, some are labeled from places in Virginia and California. Two of which feature photos of Mary Pickford on the set of *Little Annie Rooney* which was being filmed in West Hollywood, California. Pickford was 33 at the time of filming but played a spry and determined young Irish girl. The movie became one of the highest grossing films of 1925. Pickford is seen smiling with the cast in one photo and then posing in the other. Both photos are fine with "Mary Pickford in 'Annie Roonie," written on the bottom edge. An interesting collection of photographs from a young woman during 1924 to 1930 documenting her adventures with friends and family, completing her education, and her encounter with Mary Pickford. Mots clés : [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Doubleday, Doran, New York 1930 - First edition. Bookplate on the front pastedown else fine in near fine, first issue dustwrapper that is nominally faded and with a small nick at one corner of the crown. A classic of American historical fiction. The first issue jacket, designed by Stafford Good, is rare. Apparently Roberts complained so bitterly to his publisher about this art that Doubleday had to commission a new jacket, illustrated by N.C. Wyeth. Copies with the first issue jacket are rarely seen -- the Kenneth Roberts Centennial Commission, in 1985, located only two surviving examples of the jacket. See this book in 3D on our site.         [Storia di Biassono]. Blasionum. Notizie storico-amministrative del Comune di Biassono.

Scrap Book of Dance Marathon Participant Mel Hildebrand

1930 - Oblong folio. Yellow and blue cloth over boards with (worn) embossed crest of Camden (New Jersey) High School. Disbound. A well worn scrapbook of mementos compiled by dance marathon contestant Mel Hildebrand. Much of the material has become detached from the pages where they were mounted, but seemingly all of it is present, with many additional items laid in. Overall fair condition, although the detached photos and scraps are usually near fine. An album by a participant in one of the more curious fads and crazes of the Great Depression. While an occasional dancer's photo will appear on the market, very little primary source material and only a few printed sources for this activity are ever offered for sale. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

POETRY ARCHIVE Of WINONA MONTGOMERY GILLILAND. Including Typescript Poems, Publications, and Two Photographs

Mooresville, IN, et al.: (various), (various). Circa 1930 - 1950. Dark brown three-ring binder stamped "Supplements. The Seeforth Service"; teal cloth book in tan dj printed in black; wrappered magazines. Tears to binding holes of two typescript leaves; occasional minor soil or edgewear; occasional pencil notations and corrections; binder worn. Book lightly damp-stained to bottom edge of boards and some leaves, spotting/soil to endpapers and few leaves; in Poor dj (panels split and damp-stained, loss to spine and edges). Average general wear to magazines, with occasional chipped edges, faint staining, and rusted staples; wrappers of one quite foxed. Overall, Good to Very Good condition.. Binder: 64 leaves, most typescript to recto only, containing 57 poems. INDIANA POETS: 160 pp. Poetry magazines: various paginations. 2 b/w photographs laid in, both ~3-1/2" x 3-1/2". 4to binder (11-1/2" x 9-1/2"); 8vo book and magazines. The poetry archive of Winona Montgomery Gilliland, a minor Indiana poet who garnered some national and local acclaim primarily in the 1930s. The feature item of the archive is a binder of over 50 typescript poems with occasional pencil notations and corrections, in what we presume to be Gilliland's hand, accompanied by a typed (and incomplete) List of Publications. Given that several of the poems were typed on the blank verso of her husband's life insurance office stationery, it seems likely that these were Mrs. Gilland's personal collection, comprised of both published and apparently unpublished poems. Also included is a copy of Indiana Poets: An Anthology of 48 Living Writers (New York: Henry Harrison, 1935), in which Gilliland is one of the featured 48 writers; 20 issues of various poetry magazines (one duplicate), containing publications of her poetry; and two b/w photographs, one of which is identified as a portrait of the author.Mary Winona Gilliland lived in Indianapolis most of her life, graduating from Tudor Hall and then DePauw University before marrying Robert V. Gilliland in 1915. She was published in The American Mercury, Poetry, Kaleidograph, Indiana Poetry Magazine, Weird Tales, Bozart, Westward, Better Homes and Gardens, Wings, and the 1937 issue of American Women Poets, among other magazines, and was invited to join the Poetry Society of America in 1937.A unique collection of material documenting the literary achievements of a largely forgotten mid-20th century poet.

        Street Haunting.

Housed in the green card slipcase, as issued. Spine faded to brown; an excellent copy. First and signed limited edition, number 420 of 500 copies signed by Woolf, in her usual purple ink. It has been my experience that ... the ratio is 10-1 in favour of blue". The essay was not published separately in the UK.
