Russell, Bertrand
New York: Horace Liveright, 1929. First American Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by author Bertrand Russell at top of title page in his characteristically neat hand. Russell himself credited this profoundly important and controversial work for his receipt of the Nobel Prize: "When I was called to Stockholm, at the end of 1950, to receive the Nobel Prize, somewhat to my surprise, for literature, for my book Marriage and Morals. I was apprehensive, since I remembered that, exactly 300 years earlier, Descartes had been called to Scandinavia by Queen Christina in the winter time and had died of the cold." In this book Russell advocates, in the wake of the advent of contraception, for a fundamental reassessment of the institution of marriage, and for rejection of Victorian notions of morality. It led to the infamous court decision that he was "morally unfit". First American edition in original dark navy blue cloth stamped in gilt and red (slight wear and spotting to cloth; minute puncture to spine; tiny ink name on endpaper). PROVENANCE: From the library of noted University of Washington Professor Garland Ethel, one of the subjects of a notorious anti-Communist academic witch hunt in Washington State history, with Ethel's signature on front endpaper. It is worth noting that Washington State was one of the first states to create a legislative Committee on Un-American Activities, and that the University of Washington was one of the first universities to begin investigations.

Mechanically scanned color television was also demonstrated by Bell Laboratories in June 1929 using three complete systems of photoelectric cells, amplifiers, glow-tubes, and color filters, with a series of mirrors to superimpose the red, green, and blue images into one full color image." Doyle, A. Conan
Garden City NY: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1929. Original black cloth decorated in yellow, with dust jacket. First American Edition of the last volume of fiction to be published during Doyle's lifetime. The title tale is Doyle's great science fiction adventure in which Professor Maracot leads an expedition to the floor of the Atlantic Ocean and encounters an ancient submarine civilization -- illustrating Doyle's long-time interest in the Atlantis legend. Two of the other three tales are Professor Challenger science fiction stories -- "The Disintegration Machine" and "When the World Screamed." The other one, "The Story of Spedegue's Dropper," is a World War I tale in which a cricket bowler's lob technique is adapted for hurling grenades in trench warfare.~The very uncommon dust jacket is a color pictorial one, designed by Fay Turpin, showing a battle between man and shark in front of undersea buildings. The volume is in fine condition; the jacket is near-fine, with the red spine lettering a little faded, and a few tiny tears (but nothing is lacking). Green & Gibson A47c. Housed in a felt-lined morocco-backed clamshell case. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Marinetti Filippo Tommaso - Azari Fedele
Morreale, 1929. In-16° (180x125mm), pp. 153, (7), cartonatura editoriale rosa a stampa blu con dorso perfettamente rifatto (design di Azari con tavola aero-parolibera al piatto posteriore). Sguardie verdi. Un'annotazione del tempo alla p. 68. Una dedica cassata all'occhietto. 13). MITCHELL, Peter Chalmers
Cover title: The Zoological Society, London. Official Guide to the Gardens Regents Park. London : Harrison & Sons [for The Zoological Society], [1929]. 26th edition. Royal octavo, original pictorial stiff wrappers (a little creased), pp i-xviii, 1-106, xix-xxii, photographic illustrations, folding map; bottom corners dog-eared and some damp marks to outer leaves; else a good copy. On page 88 of this guide is a photograph of the London Zoo's "Thylacine, or Tasmanian wolf", taken by D. Seth Smith. This was the last living specimen outside Australia. A female, she had been purchased for £150 in 1925, and was the last of numerous thylacines which had been exported (with varying degrees of success) to zoos in London, Paris, Antwerp, Cologne, Berlin and New York between the 1850s and 1920s. She died at London Zoo on 9 August 1931. The last known captive specimen of Thylacinus cynocephalus died in the Hobart Zoo in 1936. Monash University University Library holds a complete run of the Guide from 1904-1939; otherwise, no individual copy of the 26th edition is recorded in Australian collections.
