LAWRENCE, D. H.
London, Martin Secker, 1929. 2 volumes, octavo. Original brown cloth, titles to upper boards and spines gilt, top edges stained brown. Some browning endleaves but an excellent set. Second impressions. With Vita Sackville-West's signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper of the first volume, "Evelyn from Vita Xmas 1931". The recipient was the journalist Evelyn Irons. By 1931 Irons had become the editor of the Features page on the Daily Mail. In March of that year she arranged to interview Vita Sackville-West in London. Three days later she was invited to Sissinghurst and soon after the two became lovers. The relationship was quite short-lived but the friendship persisted up to Vita's death in 1962. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

His response to the Boston Police Strike of 1919 thrust him into the national spotlight and gave him a reputation as a man of decisive action. The next year, he was elected vice president of the United States, and he succeeded to the presidency upon the sudden death of Warren G. Harding in 1923. Elected in his own right in 1924, he gained a reputation as a small government conservative and also as a man who said very little, although having a rather dry sense of humor. Coolidge restored public confidence in the White House after the scandals of his predecessor's administration, and left office with c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hemingway, Ernest
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929. First edition, first issue in first issue dustwrapper. Fine in a nice, near fine dustwrapper with a bit of uniform overall age-toning and a tiny hole at the bottom of the front panel, but with none of the usual fading to the blue portion of the spine found on almost all copies. A nice unrestored example of Hemingway's classic story of love and war, arguably his masterpiece, and certainly one of the highspots of 20th Century literature. *Connolly 100*. Fine in Near Fine jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

[JONES, David (1895-1974), illustrator] Samuel Taylor COLERIDGE
Bristol: Douglas Cleverdon for the Fanfare Press, 1929. 4to (315 x 248 mm; 12 1/4 x 10 inches). 10 copper-engraved plates by Jones. Original quarter gilt-lettered cream cloth, green boards. Spine slightly soiled, light wear at extremities. Item #403565 LIMITED EDITION, number 265 of 480 total copies. Coleridge's poem had haunted Jones since his childhood. "Though but little known as an engraver in the 1920's, he was to be an inspired choice, and undertook his commission with great seriousness and devotion. From the first, Jones saw his task as not one of simple illustration, but as the attempt to realise in visual terms the symbolic imagery arisen from the deeps of Coleridge's imagination. Jones tells us that between 150 and 200 preliminary drawings were made in response to the commission" (Peter Larkin, "David Jones and the Ancient Mariner," in: The Coleridge Bulletin Conference Issue, [unnumbered] July 1996, pp. 2-20). In 1964, while working on the foreword to a new edition, Jones wrote to the art critic Kenneth Clark, "it was quite a business finding a copper-plate printer [in 1929]. However we found one. Even in 1929 it was becoming difficult because printing from copper-plates had of course ceased as a normal means of reproduction years before then. And as you know the process is totally different from wood-block printing. I wouldn't be surprised if very soon it will be impossible to get copper-plate engravings printed" (quoted in Thomas Dilworth, "Letters from David Jones to Kenneth Clark," in: The Burlington Magazine 142, no. 1165 (2000), p. 223). [WOMEN] JAMES, Norah C.
London: The Scholartis Press, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. First Continental edition of the author's first novel about the effects of wartime morality, an ill-fated venture seized upon by British censors on grounds of obscenity. "On February 21, 1929, Norah James, the advertising and publicity manager at Jonathan Cape's publishing house, was on her way to work when she passed a news placard that proclaimed "Woman's Novel Seized." James did not stop to buy a copy of the paper, but she would later discover that it was her first novel, Sleeveless Errand, selling papers that day. The night before, plain-clothes policemen had seized all copies of the book after Eric Partridge, the novel's publisher, unwillingly provided them with a list of "every bookseller to whom the book had been delivered" (Marshik, Celia. "Censoring War's Perversions in The Well of Loneliness and Sleeveless Errand." Journal of Modern Literature Vol.26, No.2 (2003)). The content of James's novel was condemned due to the promiscuous heterosexual behavior of the female protagonist and her set, and their use of "God," "Christ," and "Bloody Hell." "While most officials regarded sexual "deviance" during wartime as a necessary evil, they acknowledged that the majority of the public did not hold this view and that the perception of wartime sexual perversion could undermine national morale" (ibid.). A remarkable survival, as copies of the book were reportedly burned by police after their seizure. We find no copies for sale in the trade (Feb.2018), with 18 copies found in OCLC - of these, only 13 in U.S. institut … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: Editions Pittoresques, 1929. See pictures. Some shelf wear to slip case with edge wear. Book has darkening at spine; the smoke from the cannon has one small chip, and there is a 1 cm crack at the bottom of the spine. The front joint looks as though it may have been repaired but it was very well done and hard to perceive. Foreedges of binding are a little darker too but that may just be a product of the binding process. I've looked through the pages and only find one pencil price on the last blank endpaper at rear (erased, but visible). A very handsome book, both inside and out. A very handsome book, with an attractive fine binding on the outside, and bright and beautiful illustrations (pochoir - each illustration hand-colored by stencil) within. 25 pochoir illustrations including a printer's mark, frontis, 8 full-page plates, and 15 chapter heading; the colophon is also colored. One of only 425 examples, numbered 106. Printed on paper "velin de Rives". About the Binding - The following excerpt is from a mid-20th century advertisement for the work (clipping included); I will note that what the writer calls "inlay", may actually be onlay but it gives the impression of inlay: "4to, full red french levant-morocco, front cover with a sailing vessel formed by inlays of vari-colored Morocco with some tooling in blind surrounded by double inlays of brown and grey morocco forming a geometric border; back with unusual inlay of a firing cannon, the smoke of which contains the gilt lettering; innter geometric gilt borders with corner inlays of brown Morocco, gilt hand marbled … [Click Below for Full Description]
