The Metalclad Airship ZMC-2 [Original prospectus for investors in Dirigible Airship]

[Detroit]: Detroit Aircraft Corp. vg to vg+/no dj. the unprinted spine is moderately sunned.. nd, circa 1929. blue boards. small folio, [32]pp. Minor rubbing to cover edges. 4 X 7 inch sample of "Alclad Sheet (Aluminum Alloy)" laid in. . 1962 Ink gift inscription from Carl B. Fritsche (Co-founder of Detroit Aircraft Co) on the front free endpaper. Fritsche and Ralph Hazlett Upson founded the company specifically to build the ZMC2. Lower corner of pages 3-10 with a small flattened dogear. Printed on gl ossy paper stock, this copy had several pages stuck together, but they were successfully separated by the professionals at Grace bindings. There are a few spots of light adhesion damage, mostly to margins and edges. There are a very few spots affecting text, with but a few letters obscured. The "Aiclad" aluminum sample is printed on both sides with full details of it's specifications, as well as information about the principals of the Detroit Aircraft Corporation and a list of it's divisions (Lockheed was a division). The Aluminum sample is lightly rubbed and has some minor surface oxidation. An extraordinary piece of Lighter-than-Air history, this hardcover is bound in boards of verticaly striped dark blue and midnight blue, decorated with four vertical silver stripes, and a small silver sillouette of an airship over a starlit sea. Though largely dealing with technical aspects of the US Navy vessel ZMC-2, this book is a prospectus and sales brouchure clearly intended to stimulate interest in commercial applications. .

Erte -- Romain de Tirtoff -- Exposition de Ses Oeuvres Hotel Jean Charpentier a Paris 27 Mai - 10 Juin 1929

Paris, Vanves: L'Imprimerie Kapp, 1929. Limited First Edition. Wraps. Good. Scarce early Erte, a catalogue from his first major art exhibition in 1929. No. 364 of 1,500 limitation. 4to. 32 by 24 cm, 12.5 by 9.5 inches. Unpaginated, 26 leaves, including title. 12 color plates, most with a strong gold field and a lustrous sheen, as well as text illustrations, some in color. Essays by Feuillet ("Le peintre-poete Erte") and Barbier ("Erte et le theatre"). The catalogue lists 136 works that formed the exhibition. From the illustrations one can see that Erte had fully developed his signature style of highly stylized figures, often statuesque but for a certain fluidity and flow to their posture and garment, and the epitome of what we think of as Art Deco. Erte's palette has an intoxicating quality, and one also espies a sly playfulness in much of his work. From the Wraps are soiled. Lighter soiling of first few leaves, then generally clean.

Autograph musical quotation from the composer's Concerto Gregoriano, signed in full

Oblong octavo, 89 x 151 mm. Two measures, with "Concerto Gregoriano" and "Alleluja!" at head. Dated Budapest, November 9, 1929. Notated in black ink on a portion of an album leaf. Also signed by Else Respighi. Slightly worn; browned at edges; ink slightly faded. . "Despite the eclecticism and uneven quality of his output as a whole, the colourful inventiveness of his most successful works has won them an international popularity unmatched by any other Italian composer since Puccini..."& & "... The best known of the overtly abstract compositions whose use of plainsong-like material followed on from the Tre preludi is the Concerto gregoriano for violin and orchestra (1921), whose central movement features the familiar Easter sequence Victimae paschali. Elsewhere in the work the allusions to plainchant are more fleeting and disguised; the quasi-pastoral result parallels some of the more calmly modal music of Vaughan Williams." John C.G.

        A Packet for Ezra Pound

Dublin: The Cuala Press,, 1929. Octavo. Original holland boards, write paper title label to spine, titles to upper board in black, blue endpapers. Vignette engraved title page. Slight partial tanning to corners, ends and endpapers, single hinge breached within; an excellent copy. First edition, first impression; one of only 425 copies. Yeats's Packet for Ezra Pound presents one side of an intriguingly unlikely literary and personal friendship; Yeats, who lived with Pound more than once (first in Ashdown Forest, where Pound's ostensibly secretarial status produced the drastic renovation of Yeats's poetic style in his 1914 collection "Responsibilities", and later in Rapallo during the late 1920s, the period of association with which Yeats's "Packet" is concerned), describes Pound as a man "whose art is the opposite of mine, whose criticism commends what I most condemn, a man with whom I should quarrel more than with anyone else if we were not united by affection." This copy has a newspaper-clipped portrait of Yeats (with an extremely stern expression) laid in.

[Association Copy] A Florentine Christmas of a Century Ago

Florence: Giulio Giannini & Son, 1929. Third edition. 12mo. Patterned color paper wraps, printed label on cover. Color frontis, one engraving, borders in green and orange. An amazing and exceedingly rare association between two of the three principal female Brandywine artists, Violet Oakley and Elizabeth Shippen Green (the other was J.W. Smith). Signed in attractive cursive hand across the whole the front free endpaper: "Merrie Christmas Greetings/ to/ Elizabeth- the Queen/ and/ Huger- the King/ from Violet/ "Cogslea"/ December/ 1930." Huger, of course, referring to Elizabeth Shippen Green's husband, Huger Elliot. A monumental and endearing inscription. Association copies of books between the Brandywine artists are vanishingly scarce. Book is fine.

This print by Rockwell Kent depicts a woman washing her feet in a river, one leg in the water and the other bent up onto the shore.         GOOD-BYE TO ALL THAT

1929 - [this copy signed by Graves] An Autobiography. London: Jonathan Cape, (1929). Original salmon cloth, with dust jacket. First Edition, first (unexpurgated) issue, of "one of the finest books about World War I" [CGEL] -- a book that captures the sense of resulting disillusionment of his entire generation. ~GOOD-BYE TO ALL THAT, an English poet's effort to write the freezing and inhibiting memories of the war out of his mind, ought to prove one of the most enduring indictments by an individual of a system of society that failed, in a moment of crisis, to take the individual into consideration at all. [from the contemporary New York Times Book Review]~Graves had gone to the front while still in his teens; after a shell blast he was reported as killed, and as a result he had the misfortune of reading his own obituary before he was 21. He suffered from shell-shock for about a decade thereafter. He broke with his family's "respectability" when in 1926 he chose to live openly with the American poet Laura Riding -- along with his first wife and their children. GOOD-BYE TO ALL THAT was such a success that, after years of impoverishment, he and Laura (after her suicide attempt) were able to settle on the island of Mallorca. (On the eve of World War II she ran off with the American poet Schuyler Jackson, he returned to England to marry Beryl Hodge, and in 1946 he and Beryl went back to spend the rest of their lives in his beloved village of Deya on Mallorca.) ~The suppressed first issue includes the passage about Siegfried Sassoon's mother's inability to cope during the war (lines 11-19 on p. 290). It also includes "the most terrible of his [Sassoon's] war-poems" on pp 341-343. It has been suggested (by Faber & Foyle, among others) that only about 100 copies of this first issue reached the public before it was suppressed and replaced with the usual, expurgated issue (in which patterns of asterisks replace the expurgated passages). In fact, Higginson says this issue could be termed "a pre-publication state, rather than a true first edition," though he acknowledges that it is also "generally considered the collector's impression."~This copy is in fine condition; the dust jacket is near-fine (two shallow chips at the top corners of the spine, but otherwise whole and clean). The front free endpaper is SIGNED BY GRAVES in 1968 (in Deya, Mallorca). An exemplary copy of an important book. Higginson A32a. Housed in a morocco-backed clamshell case.
