Gouache of male and female mallard ducks flying over marshland, sky and clouds in the distance

New York: The Derrydale Press, 1929 - Edgar Burke, MD (1889-1950) successfully combined the vocation of medicine (he was a member of the American College of Physicians and Surgeons) and the avocation of sport. He was an enthusiastic wildfowler and upland gunner, and expert angler and fly tyer (he designed the flies "Doctor Burke" and "Family Secret") and was interested in pigeon racing and cock fighting (it was he, in the Jersey City cock-fights of the 1930s, who sewed up the wounds of the injured birds). He was also a celebrated sporting artist, illustrating two Derrydale Press classics, Feathered Game (1929)--such as the example offered here--and Upland Game Bird Shooting in America (1930), and producing front cover vignettes for seven more, including Grouse Feathers, and De Shootinest Gent'man. He was, notes Siegel, a childhood companion and lifetime friend of Derrydale proprietor Eugene Connett--a relationship that paid large dividends for readers of the Press. A UNIQUE AND BEAUTIFUL ORIGINAL DUCK GOUACHE FOR THE DERRYDALE PRESS CLASSIC "FEATHERED GAME" First edition. Image 10 x 7 inches, matted and framed to 15-1/2 x 12-1/2 inches overall. Signed lower left "Edgar Burke 1927". The drake is the original painting of the illustration for "The Mallard" section of Connett's Feathered Game from a Sporting Journal. Fine condition.       Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., 1929., 1929. First U. S. edition. Near fine copy in a fine, bright dust jacket. The first Roger Sheringham mystery. This book was praised by Howard Haycraft as bringing a "naturalistic quality that was a welcome and needed relief." Roger Sheringham is an amateur detective "who was loquacious, conceited, occasionally downright offensive, on good terms with the police, and something of a man-about-town with contacts in all the right places." In this case the coroner had pronounced Victor Stanworth's death a suicide, but Sheringham noticed that the bullet wound was in a position that would have made suicide an impossibility. It clearly was murder. A beautiful copy of this scarce title and an early Crime Club mystery. An exceptional copy.

Laid in is a postcard order form for the book. One of 100 numbered copies Signed by the author, as well as additionally signed on the limitation page by actress Mary Pickford, and by the book's dedicatee, Frances Marion. Author's first book, basis for the George Hill film *Min and Bill*, with a screenplay by Frances Marion and Marion Jackson and featuring Marie Dressler and Wallace Beery in their first foray as an unlikely romantic duo. Dressler won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Min over fellow nominees Irene Dunne, Marlene Dietrich, Norma Shearer, and Ann Harding. The Dressler-Beery partnership proved so appealing that they were reunited three years later in both *Tugboat Annie* and *Dinner at Eight*. Lorna Moon bore a son out of wedlock to director William DeMille, with the child being raised by Cecil B. DeMille. This copy was purchased from the library of the son, Richard DeMille. After the child was born, Moon was in dire straits and her close friends Marion and Pickford helped to get the book published, and successfully pushed to have the film made, although Moon died soon afterward.         Art Forms in Nature

London: A. Zwemmer,, 1929. Examples From the Plant World Photographed Direct From Nature. With an introduction by Karl Nierendorf. Quarto. Original green cloth, decoration and titles to upper board and spine gilt. With the photographic dust jacket and publisher's card slipcase (a little worn at edges) printed on the spine in black. 120 full page photogravures by Blossfeldt. Some minor spotting but a superb copy in a rather torn and lightly rubbed dust jacket missing a number of very small pieces at the edges and with some internal repair. Scarce in the slipcase. First edition, first impression, English issue with the new preliminaries. A masterpiece of nature photography and one of the greatest and most influential photographic books ever to have been published. Blossfeldt (1865-1932) is "recognised for his extensive and unique collection of photographic plant portraits that reveal the tactile qualities, intricate forms, and uncanny aspects of flora. His fusion of scientific observation, sculptural form and surreal composition pioneered an artistic style that forged new approaches to modern art and photography" (Whitechapel Gallery). The artist was by training a botanist—his use of extreme close-up technique in photographing plants began as part of his study. "Over three decades, Blossfeldt produced 6,000 photographs, using a homemade camera and lens that could magnify a subject by 30 times, to capture the microcosmic aesthetic of his specimens. In 1928, the first of three ground-breaking portfolios was published under the over-arching title Urformen der Kunst (Artforms in Nature). It became an overnight sensation; Blossfeldt was celebrated for discovering a hitherto 'unknown universe' and for his exemplary technical feats as a photographer. The philosopher Walter Benjamin declared that Karl Blossfeldt 'has played his part in that great examination of the inventory of perception, which will have an unforeseeable effect on our conception of the world'" (Southbank Centre).

Some tanning to free endpapers (as is usually the case with this. book), else a fine copy in very good printed dust jacket with mild. fading to spine panel, faint vertical crease in front panel, two. short closed tears at edges, and light wear to corner tips with very. slight loss. Quite a nice copy overall. This book is uncommon,. especially in jacket, and is rarely found inscribed or signed by. Visiak. (#104781). First edition. A presentation copy with signed inscription by Visiak to H. Millar dated September 1932. "Visiak is now remembered by macabre enthusiasts for his genuinely original novel MEDUSA (1929). A weird story of a voyage to unknown waters, it earned a dreadful review from the LONDON TIMES when it first appeared, which helped it sink without a trace (the same paper forty years later in Visiak's obituary referred to the book as 'a tour-de- force')" - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 444. MEDUSA "is a hard to categorize as Lindsay's A VOYAGE TO ARCTURUS (1920). The tale moves gradually, in a slow crescendo, from its beginnings in a normal-seeming nineteenth-century England through adventures at sea and finally into a literal pit of fantasy -- a vast circular hole occupied by the eponymous sea monster which eats sexually aware men alive. The protagonist is a young boy who remains sexually innocent, though haunted by other guilts: he survives while his companions perish." - Clute and Grant (eds), The Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997), p. 987. Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 3-352. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1636. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 219. Bleiler (1978), p. 200. Reginald 14688.

Darkening in the gutters, as always seems the case with this title, else fine in a bright, near fine dustwrapper with a little wear at the crown. A title that resurfaced in the Lost American Classics series, a "Yellow Peril" novel about a Tarter-Mongol tyrant leading his hoards through Europe, into Canada and invading the United States, by an important American war correspondent who lost an eye at Chateau-Thierry and won the Croix de Guerre. Exceptionally uncommon in this condition. .

        The Fairy Caravan

Philadelphia, David Mackay and Co. 1929., 1929. FIRST U.S. EDITION (Precedes the Limited UK Edition, see below), INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. 8vo, pp.225. With the copyright asserted on the title page in blue-black ink in the hand of Beatrix Potter. In addition, she has boldly struck out the 'Philadelphia' portion of the publisher's imprint. A used copy in original green cloth with colour plate illustration laid down to upper. Copy shows some general handling, gilt dulled to back-strip, crease to p.108, ink name and address to pastedown. An important copy, housed in a silk-lined leather clamshell box. In 1929 Miss Potter realised that the publication of the US edition of "Fairy Caravan" would leave her without a British copyright on the work: "It is evident that the English copyright must be secured by me." she wrote at the time. With this in mind she spoke to David Mackay in Philadelphia and asked him to send her one hundred sets of sheets for private binding and publication in Britain. This he did, and Miss Potter took the sheets to George Middleton in Ambleside to be bound. Obviously the US copyright on the title page was no use to either Miss Potter or Mr. Middleton, the likelihood is that Miss Potter wrote the copyright legend herself on a US edition by way of illustration to Mr. Middleton. Book Collector No.271, 'The Great Illustrators'.
