Skalden offrar till Gratierna. - Illustration till Goethes elfte romerska elegi.

      - Laverad pennteckning. Ytterst diskret signerad "Yngve" i nedre vänstra hörnet. 39,5 x 29 cm.

        The World Crisis: The Aftermath

Thornton Butterworth Limited, London 1929 - This is the first British edition, first printing of the fifth volume of Churchill's The World Crisis. Of The World Crisis, Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the front; Churchill was First Lord of the Admiralty until 1915 and then, after bearing blame for the Dardanelles tragedy, served as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. Condition is very good plus in a very good plus original dust jacket. Blue cloth boards and spine show bright gilt, square corners, and only just a hint of the bubbling of the cloth endemic to this particular edition. The contents are crisp, bright, and tight, with a hint of spotting apparent only on the ffep an the fore edge and top edge of the text block. Errata present at p.9. The dust jacket is highly complete, with only minor wear at the corners and very modest chipping to a maximum depth of .25 inch at the head and tail of the spine. The spine is a little darkened, but quite presentable. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A69.2(IV).b, Woods A31(bb) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Legislative Activity of the Chicago Board of Trade and Other Exchanges, XI. Stable and Unstable, XII. How Exchange Gambling and Lobbying Affects the Farm Home -- end. 101 pp., About the Author: GOUGH, LYSIUS (1862¿1940). Lysius Gough, farmer, businessman, and author, one of ten children of Asher and Elizabeth Gough, was born in Lamar County, Texas, on July 29, 1862. His father, a minister in the First Christian Church, owned a 160-acre farm on which Gough developed an early interest in cattle raising. In 1876, at the age of fourteen, he ran away from home and got his first job as a cowboy for B. L. Murphy, who ran cattle in Hopkins and Hunt counties. During the next five years Gough participated in several overland drives to Kansas. In 1882 Jule Gunter hired him to work for the T Anchor Ranch. Because he never swore, Gough's fellow cowhands gave him the nickname "Parson." He remained with the T Anchor until 1884, when he decided to complete his education. He entered Pilot Point Institute, finished high school at the age of twenty-six, obtained a teaching certificate, and was hired to be principal of the institute. While he was there, Gough published his first collection of cowboy verse, Western Travels and Other Rhymes (1886). He also studied law and qualified for the legal profession. In 1888 he married Ida Russell, a former pupil of his at Pilot Point, and they settled on a farm south of Dimmitt. They had ten children, six of whom lived to adulthood. In 1891 Gough taught the county's first school in Dimmitt. Later that year he assisted in the organization of the county and was elected the first county judge. In October 1898 the Goughs moved to Hereford, where he engaged in the real estate business and was for a time in partnership with C. G. Witherspoon. In 1910 Gough was involved with D. L. McDonald in the drilling of irrigation test wells and was among the first to drill his own irrigation well. In 1911 he entered into a contract with the C. B. Livestock Company of Crosby County and conducted experimental work on 10,000 acres to determine what crops and seed types would be most profitable in the county. His detailed weekly reports are in the archives of the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. After 1914 Gough began large-scale farming for himself. He was president of the Texas Wheat Growers Association from 1923 until 1928. In 1929 he published a book entitled Crime, in which he denounced the activities of speculators in the Grain Exchange and their effects on prices paid to farmers. He began lecturing on farm subjects and was known throughout the Great Depression as a champion of farmers' rights. Summary: EXTREMELY SCARCE DEPRESSION ERA TITLE on the Grain Trade and what the author views as the dangers brought forth by excessive speculation. HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE. Maisons d'habitation. L'Art International d'Aujourd'hui, n°3

Paris: Editions D'Art Charles Moreau, 1929. A superb collection of 45 plates illustrated with wonderful black and white nicely printed photographs of modern style architecture by some of the great architects of the early part of the 20th Century including Gropius, Le Corbusier, Rob Mallet-Stevens, Andre Lurcat and many others. The plates genreally have several photos on each one, but there are many that have a single image. There are 9 plates missing from the edition, and some of the plates have wear including chipping to the tips and edges, but generally they are in vg. condition considering the age of the portfolio and the contents. The portfolio has an introduction printed on the back inside panel that continues on the back of the portfolio. The portfolio itself has wear some chips and mends with most of the wear on the back panel which has specks of paint. Most of the plates have tiny tack holes on the tips which lead me to believe that they were at one time used in a school or an architectural firm. The photographic images themselves are fine with no damage intruding on the images. A very rare book documenting an important period in architectural history. Condition noted and sold as is. . First Edition. Oversize Portfolio.

        Typed Letter Signed

np, Tel Aviv 1929 - Typed letter, in Hebrew, signed by David Ben-Gurion and Eliezer Kaplan. One page, 9.5" x 11.5", Tel Aviv, December 30, 1929, written to "Dr. A[rthur] Ruppin", a sociologist, Zionist thinker, and one of the founders of Tel Aviv. Translation of the Hebrew text: "Dear Friend! In these serious times for our endeavors, we are carrying out the unification of the forces of the Hebrew labor movement in Aretz [Eretz, Israel]. We are sure that the day of unification-will also be a great day for you, dear Dr. Ruppin, as the best of your efforts and hopes have been tied these many years with those of the Hebrew worker, who is conquering and building and creating the working Nation in Eretz Israel, and its new society and its culture. Your being with us and among us during the convention will bring joy to all our members. With many blessings, the Joint Secretariat, D. Ben Gurion, E. Kaplan". In 1930, the United Labor Party and Young Workers Party consolidated and formed Mapai, which became the strongest political party in Israeli politics until the 1960s and was led by David Ben-Gurion. In 1948 Ben-Gurion of course become the first Prime Minister of Israel while Eliezer Kaplan was appointed Minister of Finance. Usual mail folds, otherwise near fine condition. Linen cloth spine with printed paper title label [extra label tipped-in at rear]; blue colored paper-wrapped boards. Color pictorial eps duplicating an 1847 lithograph of San Francisco.. Spine label a bit chipped about the edges. Binding tips worn. A VG. copy.. This extra-illustrated copy of the special Argonaut edition has an additional 26 inserted items, including 2 mss pages by the author concerning a voyage he made from San Diego to San Francisco; the Mayor's proclamation of April 18, 1906 [... KILL any and all persons engaged in looting ..."]; original San Diego Alcalde Deed from Miguel de Pedrorena (one of the Members of the 1849 Constitutional Convention); fragment of the original log of the American schooner Julia Ann which landed in San Francisco in 1841; two pages of songs printed in San Francisco in the 'Sixties; a leaf from The Pioneer Magazine of January 1855; leaf from the March 4, 1849 New York newspaper, Brother Jonathan [30-1/2" x 20", unfolded, with 15 cuts], with extensive article, "The California Gold Mines"; and other sundry items of a similar historical nature. As the cataloguer of this work, divers copies of which I've had over the years, the most interesting aspect of this particular copy, and never before encountered in the others, is the tipped-in Mar 1849 Brother Jonathan newspaper, which provides a graphic representation on how the California Gold Rush was received, and perceived, in the East, with a plethora of information, and mis-information, being provided to the news-hungry public; all-of-which no doubt further fueled the fire imparted by Gold Fever. Finally, we cannot improve on Howes' assessment, to wit: "This the most valuable of all Californian reminiscences." . Profusely illustrated with maps & plates.

Fine collection of travel snapshots, taken between summer 1928 and summer 1929, showing off New York during the last months of the Roaring Twenties, not long before the Crash of October 1929. Meticulously captioned in Swedish, the series begins with an atmosperic early-morning view of New York harbor as seen from the deck of the "Kungsholm". This is followed by photos of the New York skyline, steamers on the Hudson, bathing scenes in Central Park, the newly-built Kensico Dam near White Plains, various street scenes (showing streetcars, city-buses, the elevated Manhattan Railway, Manhattan Bridge, advertisements, motorcars, pedestrians on 5th Avenue, etc.), views of architecture and shots taken from skyscrapers, Columbia University, and Long Island. The photos also show portraits not only of the travellers, but also of the hotel personnel, people bathing in Atlantic City, and a black nanny. Events captured in snapshots include a Belmont Park horse race on May 25, 1929, and the funeral parade held on July 18, 1928, in honor of the crashed pilot Emilio Carranza (the "Mexican Lindbergh"). Gustaf Schult, the main photographer of the series (and occasionally depicted therein), was a member of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce. - Includes four issues of the on-board journal of the TS Drottningholm published for the Göteborg-New York journey (June 12-18, 1928) as well as the passenger list of the MS Kungsholm during Schult's return from New York to Göteborg in June 1929. Wege zur Raumschiffahrt

      Munich: R. Oldenbourg, 1929.
Oberth, Hermann (1894-1989). Wege zur Raumschiffahrt. xi, 431pp. 4 plates. Munich & Berlin: R. Oldenbourg, 1929. 236 x 163 mm. Original cloth, front cover slightly warped. Fine copy. Publisher's blurb for Die Möglichkeit der Weltraumfahrt (1928), ed. Willy Ley, tipped to the front free endpaper.
<p.Third edition of Oberth's Die Rakete zu den Planetenräumen (1923), the first published under this title, and greatly expanded from the first edition's 92 pages. It was through this third edition that Oberth's work in rocketry became widely known.

Wege zum Raumschiffahrt was the first work to receive the REP-Hirsch International Astronautics Prize, which had been established in 1928 by French rocketry pioneers Robert Esnault-Pelterie and André-Louis Hirsch; the prize was awarded annually between 1929 and 1939. The purpose of the prize was to recognize "the best original theoretical or experimental works capable of promoting progress in one of the areas permitting the realization of interstellar navigation or furthering knowledge in a field related to astronautics" (Blosset, p. 11). In the epilogue to his book, Oberth acknowledged its receipt of the REP-Hirsch Prize and expressed his surprise and gratitude that a French organization "would award such a prize to a German . . . It is encouraging to see that science and education are able to bridge national differences" (p. [424]).

Oberth's Wege zum Raumschiffahrt began as a doctoral thesis on the rocket in interplanetary space, which he submitted to the University of Heidelberg in 1922. In his thesis Oberth set out to prove four propositions: (1) that the technology of the time permitted the building of machines capable of rising above the earth's atmosphere; (2) that these machines could attain velocities sufficient to prevent their falling back to earth, or even to escape the earth's gravitational pull; (3) that such machines could be built to carry human beings; and (4) that under certain conditions, their manufacture might be profitable. Oberth demonstrated that a rocket can operate in a vacuum and that it can surpass the velocity of its own exhaust; he also pointed out the superiority of liquid fuels in producing maximum exhaust velocity.

Oberth's thesis was rejected by the University of Heidelberg, so he published it commercially in 1923 under the title Die Rakete zu den Planetenräumen; a second, slightly enlarged edition appeared in 1925. In the 1929 third edition, which is over four times larger than the first, Oberth "reported most of [his] theories on space travel . . . described manned space travel in detail, proposed the inclined trajectory towards the east for ascending space ships, investigated the relationships between consumption of propellant and gain of energy, commented on most of the errors in the literature of the day concerning rockets, and finally, described an electrostatic space ship" (Oberth, p 136). Oberth dedicated the work to Fritz Lang and Thea von Harbou, director and writer respectively of Frau im Mond, one of the world's first serious science fiction films. Oberth had served as a consultant on the film, which was the first to present the basics of rocketry to a mass audience.

Some of Oberth's findings were anticipated by those of Goddard and of Tsiolkovsky; however, their work went largely unheralded, while Oberth's was greeted enthusiastically in Germany by a band of devotees that eventually became the Verein für Raumschiffahrt (Society for Space Travel). This in part explains why, when war came in 1939, Germany was able to quickly organize an efficient and competent rocketry research team capable of producing advanced weapons such as the V-2. After the war German rocket technology was transplanted into the United States' rocketry and space programs, greatly enhancing their development. Blosset, "Robert Esnault-Pelterie: Space Pioneer," in Durant & James, First Steps toward Space (1974), pp. 5-21. Oberth, "My Contributions to Astronautics," in ibid., pp. 129-140. Dark Star

Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill. (1929). First. First edition. Owner name, fine in beautiful, very near fine dustwrapper with a little light wear and fading at the spine. Laid in is a postcard order form for the book. One of 100 numbered copies Signed by the author, as well as additionally signed on the limitation page by actress Mary Pickford, and by the book's dedicatee, Frances Marion. Author's first book, basis for the George Hill film Min and Bill, with a screenplay by Frances Marion and Marion Jackson and featuring Marie Dressler and Wallace Beery in their first foray as an unlikely romantic duo. Dressler won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Min over fellow nominees Irene Dunne, Marlene Dietrich, Norma Shearer, and Ann Harding. The Dressler-Beery partnership proved so appealing that they were reunited three years later in both Tugboat Annie and Dinner at Eight. Lorna Moon bore a son out of wedlock to director William DeMille, with the child being raised by Cecil B. DeMille. This copy was purchased from the library of the son, Richard DeMille. After the child was born, Moon was in dire straits and her close friends Marion and Pickford helped to get the book published, and successfully pushed to have the film made, although Moon died soon afterward. Rare, and an important association copy. .

        AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF CALVIN COOLIDGE

New York: Cosmopolitan Book Corporation, 1929. First Edition, Limited Issue, Specially Bound. This copy out of series and with a tipped in letter signed by Coolidge on White House stationery and dated 1927. With a photogravure frontispiece of President Coolidge and eleven other illustrations throughout. 8vo, publisher’s original dark blue linen backed boards, t.e.g., others uncut. [12], 247, colophon. A bright and clean copy, the letter also finely preserved. SCARCE LIMITED FIRST EDITION, THIS COPY WITH A FINE LETTER ON WHITE HOUSE STATIONERY AND OUT OF SERIES, RARE THUS. Coolidge speaks in an endearing way of his childhood in the woods and mountains near Killington, VT and his process of political maturation and service to his community and nation. The book is ably written and articulate in its presentation and leads the reader to a new appreciation of a man often relegated to the obscure because of his quietude. Especially noteworthy in the present day is to read Coolidge’s own thinking about the methodology of the Presidency, its struggles with the other branches of government and the absolute necessity for the President to bear the burden of that struggle in order to protect in an absolute way, the rights and privileges of the executive, and thus its equality with the other branches. All of this from a man who came from a simple country environment, from local people and through service in both the legislative and legal bodies to his place in the executive branch.

        Zur Einheitlichen Feldtheorie.

. S.Ber. Akad. Wiss. Berl., 1929/ 1. - Berlin, Verlag der Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1930, 8°, 8 S., in schönem Pappband der Zeit.. First Edition! - "The unified Field Theory" is one of Einstein's last important scientific works. According to Weil "This paper represents a new development which was immediate news. A translation by L.L.Whyte appeared in the (London) Times of Feb. 4, 1929. It was quoted in full in "Observatory", vol. 52, under the title "New Field Theory" pp.82-87 and (1930) pp.11-118." - In 1928 Einstein embarked on a new approach to a unified field theory ... involving what he called 'distant parallelism' ... By early 1929 he had solved the main problems involved in writing down field equations for his unified field theory. On the day of offical publication of the third of a formidably technical series of 9 articles on the theory ... excited headlines appeared in foreign newspapers, throughout the world ... In this frenzied, unscientific atmosphere Einstein's new theory was hailed in the press as an outstanding scientific advance. Yet Einstein had stated in his article it was still tentative; and soon he found he had to abandon it. - cf.Parkinson, Breakthroughs, p.279 - Weil No. 165*, Schlipp, Einstein No.226; Alicke No. 141; Norman Coll. I, 700
