Beyond This Point.

London: Duckworth, [1929] - Tall quarto. Original blue cloth, titles to spine in black. With the dust jacket. A little rubbed and faded at extremities, spine very slightly faded, bump to edges of upper board. An excellent copy in the rubbed and chipped jacket with an abrasion to the upper panel and several closed tears, one of which is visibly repaired with tape on the lower panel, other tape repairs to verso. Illustrations throughout from photos by Francis Brugiere. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by Sieveking on the front free endpaper, "For Elizabeth Hudson, my friend: Lance Sieveking, [?] Library, June 11th 1936". Additionally inscribed by the author on the upper panel of the dust jacket, "60 Carlyle Square, Chelsea, London". The recipient Elizabeth Hudson (1885–1973), was a nurse in Paris during the First World War and became a correspondent with many soldiers, some of whom she kept in contact with for many years. She became a good friend of E. OE. Somerville, and compiled a bibliography of her works that was published in 1942. Sieveking served in France during the First World War, and it may have been there, or through post-war artistic circles, that he met Hudson . [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Zur Einheitlichen Feldtheorie.

. S.Ber. Akad. Wiss. Berl., 1929/ 1. - Berlin, Verlag der Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1930, 8°, 8 S., in schönem Pappband der Zeit.. First Edition! - "The unified Field Theory" is one of Einstein's last important scientific works. According to Weil "This paper represents a new development which was immediate news. A translation by L.L.Whyte appeared in the (London) Times of Feb. 4, 1929. It was quoted in full in "Observatory", vol. 52, under the title "New Field Theory" pp.82-87 and (1930) pp.11-118." - In 1928 Einstein embarked on a new approach to a unified field theory ... involving what he called 'distant parallelism' ... By early 1929 he had solved the main problems involved in writing down field equations for his unified field theory. On the day of offical publication of the third of a formidably technical series of 9 articles on the theory ... excited headlines appeared in foreign newspapers, throughout the world ... In this frenzied, unscientific atmosphere Einstein's new theory was hailed in the press as an outstanding scientific advance. Yet Einstein had stated in his article it was still tentative; and soon he found he had to abandon it. - cf.Parkinson, Breakthroughs, p.279 - Weil No. 165*, Schlipp, Einstein No.226; Alicke No. 141; Norman Coll. Original printed wrappers, spine repaired with clear tape. Together 2 items. Small mark from paper clip on wrappers of no. (1), small tear in front wrapper of no. (2), but very good.

First Editions, Offprint Issues. Heisenberg and Pauli’s two-part paper contains the first full-fledged relativistic quantum field theory, representing the “formal invention of quantum electrodynamics” (Miller, Early Quantum Electrodynamics: A Source Book, p. xiii). “This extremely technical and mathematical branch of quantum physics, the foundations of which were laid by Heisenberg, Dirac, Pauli, Jordan, and their colleagues during the late 1920s and early 1930s, continues to this day with much the same program and approach . . . [Heisenberg was] a leading member of the small band of abstract theorists who established the program and laid the foundations of relativistic quantum field theory as it has been pursued ever since” (Cassidy, Uncertainty: The Life and Science of Werner Heisenberg, p. 276).
In this paper—the only one that Heisenberg and Pauli co-authored—the two physicists attempted to establish “a consistent extension of
the quantum formalism that would yield a satisfactory unification of quantum mechanics and relativity theory . . . In 1929, drawing upon the work of Dirac, Jordan, Oskar Klein, and others, Heisenberg and Pauli succeeded in formulating a general gauge-invariant relativistic quantum field theory by treating particles and fields as separate entities interacting through the intermediaries of field quanta. The formalism led to the creation of a relativistic quantum electrodynamics, equivalent to that developed by Dirac, which, despite its puzzling negative energy states, seemed satisfactory at low energies and small orders of interaction. But at high energies, where particles approach closer than their radii, the interaction energy diverges to infinity. Even at rest, a lone electron interacting with its own field seemed to possess an infinite self-energy . . . Attention was directed to the resolution of such difficulties for more than two decades” (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). The Middle Parts of Fortune. Somme & Ancre, 1916

London: The Piazza Press issued to subscribers by Peter Davies, Ltd.,, 1929. 2 volumes, octavo. Original brown buckram, titles gilt to spines within double panel, top edges gilt, others uncut, marbled endpapers. Spines a little rolled and tanned, very slight rubbing to ends and corners, very slight occasional spotting and a few hinges opening a little between the quires, but still holding soundly; very good condition indeed overall. First edition, the unexpurgated limited edition, number 273 of 525 copies. The book was published in this limited edition in 1929, garnering informed praise and intemperate notoriety in close to equal measure, and an expurgated edition, under the title Her Privates We (taken from the line in Shakespeare's Hamlet immediately following "The Middle Parts of Fortune"), was published the following year. But Manning never achieved fame and it was probably not until the re-issue of the full text in 1977 that the novel received the recognition that it deserved. Manning died of pneumonia at a nursing home in Hampstead in 1935. An excellent copy of a book perceived on publication as one of the most powerfully personal visions of the Great War. In Men at War Hemingway described it as "The finest and noblest book of men in war that I have ever read. I read it once each year to remember how things really were so that I will never lie to myself nor to anyone else about them," and T. E. Lawrence remarked that "No praise could be too sheer for this book … it justifies every heat of praise." The original unexpurgated form of a WW1 classic.

Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., 1929., 1929. First edition. Professionally rebacked with original spine laid down, former owner's name on front fly leaf, else near fine in professionally restored, dust jacket. Lieutenant Valcour in his best-known case must solve the murder of a man who was murdered twice. At 8:34 P.M. the body is discovered by police. By midnight the corpse had been revived by the injection of adrenalin into the heart. By one o'clock he had been murdered again. 20TH Century Crime and Mystery Writers says, ".... provides, typically for the period, many suspects and false trails. It has, moreover, a very nice twist at the end, the kind that makes one sorry the story must finish." In 1931 Paramount Studios produced the movie of the same name that was directed by Edward Sloman with the screenplay by Henry Myers. The movie starred William Boyd [remember him of later day Hopalong Cassidy fame], and Lilyan Tashman in the leading roles. A Haycraft/Queen and Crime Club title.

Original Drawings for The Fox and the Stork.

(Moscow 1929) - Six pen-and-ink drawings colored with watercolor, with an expressionistic look, each measuring 7 3/4 by 6 1/2 inches. These delicate, stylized illustrations are tinted with shades of orange, purple, and green. The first drawing has the title and illustrator’s name, Ausbrey, below it in Russian. The images recount La Fontaine’s fable of getting one’s just deserts: the fox exasperates the stork by offering her food in a plate, which, with his long beak, the stork cannot eat. However, the stork retaliates by offering the fox a drink from a narrow, long-necked vessel. Attractive and unique illustrations for a book never published. Two have paperclip marks to edge, else fine, mounted without adhesive in a paper portfolio.

        Early Indian Sculpture

Paris: The Pegasus Press, , 1929. Two volumes, folio. Original orange half morocco on tangerine linen boards, green morocco label, spine gilt, top edge gilt. 161 collotype plates. Some foxing to the plates, cloth a little spotted, some scuffing at the extremities. First edition. Bachhofer was one of the generation of German sinologists who were forced to emigrate under the Nazis. He taught at Munich University until 1935, and also worked at the Munich Museum für Völkerkunde. Denied the Associate Professorship at Munich as his wife was Jewish, he emigrated to America becoming Professor of Art History at the University of Chicago. Here Bachhofer studies the chronological development of Indian sculpture with particular attention to "one of the most important questions of Buddhistic iconography, the Buddha representation in North-West, North and South India." This is an uncommon and superbly produced monograph, the collotypes made by Bruckmann of Munich, the binding by Hübel and Denck of Leipzig.

ELEGANT CRIMSON MOROCCO, HANDSOMELY GILT AND ONLAID, BY HENRI NOULHAC (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers framed in gilt with onlaid white camellias at the corners, central medallion containing a large red camellia surrounded by a wreath containing half a dozen more of the same flowers in white on a burnished gilt ground; raised bands, spine compartments with mitered frames and camellia medallion centerpieces, gilt titling, turn-ins with multiple gilt rules, ivory moiré silk endleaves, all edges gilt. Original wrappers preserved. In a matching calf-lined and morocco-lipped slipcase. With 20 color plates printed "à la poupée," captioned tissue guards. A Large Paper Copy. IN MINT CONDITION. This is an unsurpassable copy, in a binding of considerable beauty, of a luxury edition of Dumas' tragic tale of a courtesan, "The Lady of the Camellias," better known as "Camille." Inspired by his lover, the courtesan Marie Duplessis, it is the best-known work of the younger Dumas (1824-95). First published as a novel in 1848, it was later adapted for the stage, and has since inspired an opera ("La Traviata"), three ballets, and numerous films. As with the next item, Noulhac has designed his binding to complement the contents of the book, and its richness is an appropriate reflection of the refinement of our deluxe edition. Henri Noulhac (1866-1931) was one of the foremost binders and gilders of his generation, an artisan described as "a superlative craftsman" by Duncan & De Bartha (who reproduce four of his bindings in their "Art Nouveau and Art Deco Bookbinding"). Noulhac was born in Chateauroux, where he served his apprenticeship, then moved in 1894 to Paris, where he established his atelier at 10 rue de Buci. His work attracted several eminent clients, including the celebrated collector and binding historian Henri Béraldi, who became his main patron. In the 1920s, Noulhac gained a reputation as a binding instructor, numbering Rose Adler among his students. The pleasing plates here are based on the wood engravings done for the 1858 edition by Paul Gavarni (1804-66), a caricaturist and book illustrator known for his apt portrayals of the fashionable crowd. They are produced using the so-called "poupée" printing technique, also known as dolly printing. Béguin described the process as "an intaglio plate coulour printing technique" which "consists in applying some ink on the plate and spreading it out with one's finger tip wrapped up in a strip of cloth. This method is notable for the fact that it allows the printer to put several colours on the same plate contemporaneously." According to the National Gallery of Art, "the method takes its name from the poupée (doll), the small ball-shaped wad of fabric that is used to ink the plate.".
