PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF VERNACULAR IMAGES, RECORDING A WOMAN'S LIFE IN THE PANAMA CANAL ZONE, 1929-1931

1929. Original photograph album. Full Leather. Very Good. This album contains more than 240 original photographs, mostly 4.25" x 2.5" and several at 5" x 7". The images are fixed with photo-corners to heavy black stock, and many have captions in white below the images. A leaf at the front, printed and accomplished by hand, identifies the photographer as Mrs. Pearl Davis Reynolds, although the photographs of her were taken by another. She entered the Canal Zone via the Pacific Ocean on 5 October 1929, apparently aboard a US Army Transport. The album is bound in string-tied leather over flexible boards with oil-painted tropical foliage on the cover, and an inset picture of Culebra Cut rendered on silk. The final two leaves are detached, otherwise in sound condition. 8" x 11" Pearl Davis Reynolds was born on 1 August 1913, died on 10 October 1998, and is buried at Fort Gibson National Cemetery in Oklahoma. Her Panama Canal Zone adventure seems to have been as the wife (or companion) of a US Marine Corps non-commissioned officer (named Miles) stationed there. Pearl's album includes two pages of autographs and comments made by Canal Zone friends. In the photographs, she appears as a tall, thin woman, usually dressed in jungle outfits. Seen in the photographs are Pearl, Miles, friends, family pets, Canal Zone sites and structures, forts, beaches, battleships, &c., &c. Here are some of the captions: Quarters #47-A; Miles; Pearl; Picnic; At Amador; Sherman Parade; In the Jungles; A-A gun, Fort San Lorenzo; Landing Field; Balloon Hanger; Fort Amador; Panama City; Ironad Dam; Fort DeLesseps; Fleet Maneuvers; USAT St. Mihiel; The Los Angeles (airplane); her four kids; Headquarters Hospital; 14" Disappearing Rifle; birdseye view of naval station; Chagres River; New Devil's Beach; Shimmy Beach; Gatum Lake; Panama Bay Battle Fleet; San Juan; Leaving Porto Rica; USAT Chateau Thierry; &c.

Important Autograph Letter Signed, 2 pp on separate 4to sheets of lined paper stamped with name, address and date, [Glen Ellen] Sonoma Co., June 20, 1910

To the noted bibliographer and book collector, author of "High Spots in American Literature" (1929), Merle Johnson. Jack London writes about his yet to be published work, "The Scarlet Plague." This work, a novella first published in "London Magazine" in 1912 and in book form in 1915, is a post-apocalyptic tale. London addresses his correspondent as "Mr. Johnson" and writes in response to Johnson's recent letter. "I've got a twenty-thousand word yarn, just finished... a pseudo-scientific story dealing with the things that happened in the twenty-first century when a new micro-organic enemy smote mankind and left only several survivors." He asks if Mr. Johnson would have a read. "Will you care to glance at it?" He announces the birth of his daughter, "Have just had a visit from the stork - a girl." Unfortunately, this child died 38 hours after she was born. Written in his large hand and fully signed, "Jack London." This letter is not in his collected letters edited by Hendricks and Shepard. Unpublished according to our research. A review of London's story from the perspective of the US Center's for Disease Control sees the work as the first foray in modern literature into catastrophic pandemics. The story set in America, takes place in 2073, sixty years after the Red Death nearly destroyed the world in 2013. The public fear of widespread death from uncontrollable disease almost seems prescient, particularly in light of the influenza pandemic of 1918-19, as do the class disparities presented in his dystopian future.

London: Privately printed for Subscribers by P. R. Stephensen,, 1929. Octavo. Original cream pigskin, titles and decoration to upper board and spine in brown and blue, top edge gilt. Housed in a quarter morocco solander box. Some minor wear to base of the spine and at the corners but very good indeed. First edition, first impression, private issue being one of just 50 copies on japon bound in leather. With the author's superb signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, "Aldous & Maria [Huxley] from D.H.L." A perfect association of a key book of Lawrence's later period. Pansies is a series of acerbic point pieces and was written as an immediate reaction to the storm of criticism caused by publication of Lady Chatterley's Lover in 1928. A typically bitter and spirited Lawrencian jeux it appeared in several formats the present example being the fullest and most limited version. Maria and Aldous Huxley were at this time Lawrence's closest friends, they visited each other frequently many letters passed between them particularly at this time and specifically in the subject of this book.

New York: World Wide Publishing Co., [1929]. First American Edition. First Printing. Octavo; maroon cloth over flexible boards, with titles and designed stamped in gilt on spine and front panel; dustjacket; 190pp. Spine gilt slightly dulled, with a few tiny spots to upper text edge, else very Near Fine. Dustjacket has a few very tiny chips at spine ends (not affecting lettering) and corner tips, else a bright, Near Fine example of the scarce dustjacket, with superb wraparound artwork. The novelized version of the suspense/mystery play by Charles Bennett, which was first staged in London in February 1928. It closed after just 42 performances, and would likely have remained little more than a brief footnote to the career of Tallulah Bankhead, had Alfred Hitchcock not adapted it into what was touted as the first "all-talking" British film. The film was a hit, and put Hitchcock firmly on the path to becoming the "Master of Suspense." This book, issued in the U.S. as No.9 in the World Wide Edition series, was actually printed in Great Britain but bound by a company in Long Island. A superb copy of an early, uncommon Hitchcock film source.

The Poet and The Lunatics Episodes in The Life of Gabriel Gale

London, Cassell. 1929, 1929. First Edition. 8vo. Near fine copy in publisher's black ribbed cloth, titled in bright gilt to the spine. Slightly bumped at the head of the spine. Dustwrapper worn at head and tail of spine with trifling loss, a little chipped to the extremties, bright and unfaded, there is a little darkening to the spine chiefly noticeable from the result of the removal of a label at the base of the spine that has resulted in a noticeably cleaner spot. Light spotting to page edges, internally clean. Gabriel Gale is an eccentric poet. His madness is the madness of insight and he uses this gift to solve or prevent crimes committed by madmen. Chesterton ably illustrates his own premise that lunacy and sanity may just be a point of view... Bleiler; Checklist of Fantastic Literature [281]. Book Collector No.273, p34.
