SARTORIS

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1929. First Edition; First Printing. Hard Cover. Fair dust jacket. Octavo. [i-iv], 1-380, pp. Bound as issued in black cloth with title in red on the spine and the front cover; top edge stained red; fraying to the corners and a bit to the spine ends; top corners bumped; previous owner note in pencil on the front free endpaper else clean; dust jacket has some loss at the spine removing most of Faulkner's name and the title; other areas with chipping; large closed tear to the front panel; early cello tape repair to the back of the jacket has left stains--not really visible from the front; now protected in a mylar cover. Despite its flaws, it is a remarkably uncommon title in a dust jacket. Sartoris is Faulkner's first major novel; in it he introduces Yoknapatawpha County, a place in which nearly every novel following Sartoris would be set. Peterson A5a; Massey 280.

Housed in a (likely hand-sewn) floral cloth-covered portfolio, the script is INSCRIBED by the Hungarian-American feminist and radical socialist screenwriter Ilona Fülöp on the title page: "To Mac: / Because You still trust me! / Ilona / Christmas, 1929 / Hollywood, Cal." A unique and attractive item, and probably the only surviving copy of the script. The story of a poor girl driven out of her village when she becomes pregnant by her employer's wealthy fiancé, finding refuge working as a maid in a brothel. After her daughter is taken from her, however, she falls into alcoholism and dies. A maid in Heaven as she was on earth, she saves her daughter from befalling a similar fate by "emptying her mop bucket" on her daughter's head via a rain shower at a pivotal moment. A multinational production in which a Hungarian screenwriter and Hungarian director, both with experience in Hollywood, shot a film starring a French actress using frozen assets from a French producer that had been mandated for exclusively Hungarian use. Though not a box office success at the time, it is now regarded as one of the all-time great films originating from the country. In a 1919 article entitled "What is 'Revolution' Doing to Love?," screenwriter Fülöp describes herself as a socialist radical, as opposed to a revolutionary or a Bolshevik, and her desire to further equal rights for women strongly defines her as a modern-day feminist as well. "Spring Showers," with its women- and proletarian-friendly plot, thus comes as little surprise. Housed in floral cloth-covered portfolio studio wrappers. Title page present, with credits for screenwriter Fulop. 78 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 77. Carbon typescript. Pages Very Good, portfolio Very Good, bound with a single line of hand-stitching.

        Look Homeward, Angel

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1929 - First edition. Spine lettering worn but readable, a very good copy in worn, good only first issue dustwrapper (with the Wolfe portrait on the rear panel) lacking the bottom couple inches of the spine, with several other modest chips and tears, and several internal tape repairs. This copy is Inscribed by the author: "To Fidelia E. Stark with warmest thanks. Thomas Wolfe Oct 30, 1929." Also laid in is a four-page carbon manuscript (folded, small breaks at the folds, else near fine), unsigned, but almost certainly by Maxwell Perkins, dated April 17, 1929 entitled "Selling Points: Look Homeward, Angel by Thomas Wolfe." The "Selling Points," in the third person, recounts the editorial process in detail, and enumerates the literary wonderment of the book. A modern classic, the author's first book, and generally considered his major achievement, a breathtaking autobiographical novel. An inscribed copy, with an intriguing manuscript account of the birth of the novel. See this book in 3D on our site. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

"SELF-PORTRAIT OF LYND WARD AUTHOR OF GOD'S MAN ..." [caption title].

New York: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, [1929].. Original woodcut proof (15 x 10 cm plus large margins), with printed tissue overlay affixed by flap on verso. Fine, in publisher's envelope with return address. The upper panel of the envelope is darkened from proximity to something, not affecting the print. According to the publisher's caption, this is one of "100 proofs taken directly from Mr. Ward's wood block and sent to you with compliments of his publisher." It is signed below the image by Ward in pencil. While the edition is generous, the mode of this item's distribution as a promotional item, for Ward's first novel without words, resulted in a somewhat larger attrition rate than would normally be expected.

        Urformen der Kunst

Ernst Wasmuth A.G., Berlin 1929 - Folio. XVII, [3]pp (Text), 120 leaves (Plates). Original photo-illustrated dust-jacket over gilt-stamped green cloth with gold lettering to spine and front cover. DJ protected by modern mylar. Publisher's device on title. Second edition of the most famous work by German botanist and photographer, Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932). "His entire photographic output is devoted to plant parts: twig ends, seed pods, tendrils, leaf buds etc. These he meticulously arranged against stark backgrounds and photographed in magnification, so that unfamiliar shapes from the vegetal worlds are revealed as startling, elegant architectural forms. Since the first publication of his photographs in the late twenties (1928) his work is considered to be one of the aesthetic highlights of photo history." Originally published in 1928 when Blossfeldt was sixty-three and a professor of applied art at the Berliner Kunsthochschule, "Urformen der Kunst" quickly became an international bestseller and in turn made Blossfeldt famous almost overnight. His contemporaries were enchanted by the abstract shapes and structures in nature that he revealed to the world. In 2001 "Urformen der Kunst" was included in "The Book of 101 Books" as one of the seminal photographic books of the 20th Century. Illustrated with 120 b/w reproductions in photogravure. Each image is approx. 10 1/4 x 7 1/2" on a 12 1/4 x 9 1/2" sheet. Sporadic creasing along edges of dust-jacket, with minor chipping at head and tail of spine.         THE BOOK OF TOBIT AND THE HISTORY OF SUSANNA

Haymarket Press, London 1929 - 254 x 191 mm (10 x 7 1/2"). xvi, 47 pp. Introduction by Dr. Montague R. James. Unnumbered, but ONE OF 13 COPIES SIGNED BY THE ARTIST AND PRINTED ON VELLUM (along with 100 deluxe copies and 875 regular copies on paper). Publisher's limp vellum, gilt titling, cover laced with green silk ribbon. With four color plates by W. Russell Flint, printed on paper and mounted on vellum leaves. Ransom, p. 314; "Modern British and American Private Presses," p. 103. A hint of splaying to covers, minor variation in the grain of the vellum, otherwise a very fine copy--clean, fresh, and smooth inside and out. This is a very pleasing vellum copy of one of just four books published by the short-lived Haymarket Press, established by Halton and Truscott Smith and operated from 1928-30. According to Ransom, the Smiths intended to issue all books of the Apocrypha with illustrations by Russell Flint, beginning with the Book of Judith in 1928, and continuing with the present work the following year. Unfortunately, the contemplated project did not go further. Flint (1880-1969) was especially noted for his female nudes, and here we--with the lecherous elders--see Susanna in her bath. DNB notes that Flint began his career as "a medical illustrator recording the effects of leprosy, eye disease, and South African War wounds," and suggests that his penchant for drawing "an unchanging perfectly proportioned female type in various exotic guises" was his way of "imagin[ing] away all signs of the ravages of the twentieth century." Unnumbered, but ONE OF 13 COPIES SIGNED BY THE ARTIST AND PRINTED ON VELLUM (along with 100 deluxe copies and 875 regular copies on paper). [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
