The Works of Shakespeare: the text of the First Folio with Quarto variants and a selection of modern readings. Edited by Herbert Farjeon

[London]: Nonesuch Press / New York: Random House 1929 - 7 vols. Full tan niger morocco gilt, top edges gilt. Spines of vols i, ii, iii, iv and vii a trifle faded (the volumes were issued separately, 1929-33,and are often unevenly faded), but a handsome set. Edition limited to "1050 [numbered] copies for sale in Great Britain & Ireland and 550 copies for sale in the United States of America", this set bearing the armorial bookplates of Geoffrey Moseley, and later in the library of Anthony Hobson. Edition "designed by Francis Meynell, printed and made in England by Walter Lewis, M.A., Printer to the University, at the Cambridge University Press, in Monotype Fournier with new capital letters made for this edition, and bound in London by A.W. Bain". "This is the finest of all editions of our greatest poet" (Nonesuch Century). Brian North Lee identifies the bookplate owner as Geoffrey Moseley (1882-1953). Anthony Hobson, ever hopeful of boosting his books' shelf value, has characteristically slipped in several booksellers' catalogue descriptions and valuations. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Gesammelte Werke / Musarionausgabe * G A N Z L E D E R - V o r z u g s a u s g a b e

Coates' novel "quite brilliantly applies a wide arsenal of literary devices, some of them surrealistic, to the exaggeratedly spoof-like tale of a master criminal and his absurd super- weapon, which sees through solids and applies remote-control heat to kill people invisibly; beneath the spoofing and the cosmopolitan style lies a sense of horror." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 239.         The Return of Sherlock Holmes (Original screenplay for the 1929 film)

Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures, 1929. Early treatment for the 1929 film, the first Sherlock Holmes film to have been produced with sound, and the first to include the Holmes utterance, "Elementary, my dear Watson" (a phrase never used by Doyle), though that statement regrettably does not appear in this draft. The first known treatment was written by Oliver P. Garrett, followed by this one, scripted by F. Hugh Herbert, and the final writing credits went to Garrett Fort and director Basil Dean. This treatment differs substantially from the finished film, and is more faithful to Doyle's source material. A rare surviving artifact from the great detective's earliest days on the screen. Side-stitched tall self-wrappers, noted as an "Outline Treatment" on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped project No. 1491 and MASTER FILE, dated May 21, 1929, with a credit for screenwriter Herbert. 52 leaves, mixed original and carbon typescript on yellow stock, with a few holograph pencil notations on the first leaf, including "1st Rough Draft." Very Good condition, with some wear to the first leaf at the bottom stitch.

        The Fairy Caravan.

Philadelphia: David McKay Co.,, 1929. Large octavo. Original green boards, illustration pasted down to front board, gilt titles to spine. With the dust jacket. Housed in a red quarter morocco solander box made by the Chelsea Bindery. 6 colour and numerous monochrome illustrations in the text by the author. Light bumped to lower end of spine, light occasional spotting to pages, in the dust jacket with light spotting, light wear along extremities, chips to ends of spine, closed tears along spine folds. A very good copy. Signed limited edition, number 48 of 100 copies signed by the author. The bibliographic story of this book is strangely charming and endearingly amateurish. Potter considered this story of a miniature animal-run travelling circus as "too personal [and] autobiographical" for her comfortably to allow publication in England. She arranged for the Philadelphia publishing house of David McKay to produce a nicely proportioned and illustrated edition. However, due to reciprocal arrangements between the US and England, publication in one nation implied a consequent relinquishment of rights in the other. Potter therefore took 100 sets of sheets from the US edition and had the local printer run off 100 copies of an altered first signature (8 pages), together with a further leaf, substituted the one for the other and had this hybrid plainly bound. Potter took the opportunity to replace the printed dedication "To Henry" with several illustrations of her pet dogs. The first UK trade edition did not appear until 1952.

        Autograph letter signed ("Moritz").

Vienna, 7. I. 1929. - Large 8vo. 5 pp. Important letter to his friend, the actress Gerda Tardel: "[.] I am again severely burdened with unpleasant tasks, especially scientific correspondence and reading dissertations, and I am thereby hampered in developing my own thoughts. But that makes no difference: I do manage to finish the really important things, and the more I encounter the true brilliance of genius, the less importance I attach to the normal professorial productions. In the meantime, a long-planned project, a series which I would like to edit and which I hope will achieve nothing less than a revolutionary reform of philosophy, is getting under way [.]". - Together with Philipp Frankl, Schlick was soon to introduce the "Schriften zur wissenschaftlichen Weltauffassung", which he would go on to edit until his death.
