Der Kamf. Monatshrift farn Poyle-Tsienistishn gedank. 1929, Nr. 1.

Paris, Imp. d`Art Voltaire 1929 - 1 Bl., 48 S. Gr. 8° (Format ca. 24x15,5 cm), illustr. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Midstream: My Later Life

Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. very good/good to very good. Inscribed first edition with an additional typed letter signed, both in Keller's distinctive pencil printing. Complete with dust jacket. The book is inscribed on the front free endpaper to "Mr. & Mrs. [John] Mayfield;" a one-page letter on personal stationery and addressed to "Mr. [John] Mayfield," a noted Swinburne bibliographer and book collector, is laid down inside the front cover. Additional material from the American Foundation for the Blind (including two letters with secretarial, i.e. stenciled, Keller signatures in pencil) is laid in. Keller was the first deafblind person to earn a college degree, and this second autobiography begins where her first book, The Story of My Life, left off. It describes the next twenty-five years of Keller's life beginning with her studies at Radcliffe College and provides details about her writing, lectures, work on behalf of the blind, and friendships with Alexander Graham Bell, Mark Twain, Charlie Chaplin, and the Carnegies among others. Although popular culture focuses upon Keller's personal triumph in learning to communicate, she was actually a collectivist at heart. Although in writing Midstream, Keller-a member of the International Workers of the World and avowed Marxist revolutionary ("Revolution. . . . Let us try revolution and see what it will do now. . . . I don't give a damn about semi-radicals.")-was somewhat restrained by her employment with the American Foundation of the Blind, she still did not avoid waxing poetic upon one of her Communist heroes: "The spirit of Lenin descended upon the weeping multitude . . . and they spoke . . . 'Let us not follow him without cowering hearts. . . . Revolution and even disintegration . . . is the working of God's undeviating Order.' . . . I see the furrow Lenin left sown with the unshatterable seed of a new life for mankind, and cast deep below the rolling tides of storm and lightning, mighty crops for the ages to reap. . . . [T]he old order may be shocked and unhappy when they behold the vigorous young builders of a new world sweeping away their time-honoured antiquities" No doubt, Keller's radical politics could be surprising to those whose only familiarity comes from Patty Duke's Oscar-winning performance in The Miracle Worker. Sound binding with intact hinges. Very light wear to cover. Unclipped dust jacket with minor soiling, edge-wear, and toned spine. The autographed letter and ephemera are in excellent shape.

        BLACKMAIL

New York: World Wide Publishing Co., Inc., [1929]., 1929. First edition. First U. S. edition. Novelization by Ruth Alexander and Play by Charles Bennett. Gold gilt on the spine slightly dulled, else a near fine copy in dust jacket with minor wear to the spine ends and corners. An excellent example of the scarce dust jacket with superb wraparound art work. An attractive young woman wishes to break away from the dull monotony of her routine life. In a thoughtless moment she is persuaded to follow a direction that leads to jealousy, murder, and blackmail. The novelization of the Suspense/Mystery play by Charles Bennett, which was first staged in London in February 1928. The play closed after just 42 performances, and would likely have remained little more than a brief footnote to the career of Tallulah Bankhead, had Alfred Hitchcock not adapted it into what was touted as the first "all-talking" British film. The film was a hit, and put Hitchcock firmly on the path to becoming the "Master of Suspense." This book, issued in the U. S. as No. 9 in the World Wide Edition series, was actually printed in England but bound by a company in Long Island. A superb copy of an early, uncommon Hitchcock film source.

        The Writings of Mark Twain

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1929. The Memorial Edition, one of 90 copies bound with an original Mark Twain manuscript page. Octavo, bound in half morocco, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, plates. The lightest minor shelf wear to some extremities and along very bottom edges of a few volumes. The leaf paged "43" includes notes regarding a "whisky conspiracy" against soldiers' health and morals, among other ink jottings. "To understand America, read Mark Twain. No matter what new craziness pops up in America, I find it described beforehand by him He was never innocent, at home or abroad" (Garry Wills). "High and fine literature is wine," Twain once wrote, "and mine is only water; but everybody likes water." This beautiful edition of Twain's complete novels, essays and sketches attests to the enduring popularity and power of his works--many of which, despite their author's protestation to the contrary, have come to be regarded as among the finest vintage American literature offers. Among other classics, the set includes A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, Life on the Mississippi, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

Ca. 1929.
