"The Hogarth Press bought the rights to this, Virginia's first book, in February 1929, taking over 500 sets of sheets that Duckworth had imported from the George H. Doran Company, New York, and issuing them with a cancel title page as the third impression. The Hogarth Press issued a photo-offset edition as the first volume in the Uniform Edition of Virgina Woolf's works in September 1929 at 5s" (Woolmer). From the library of Peggy Belsher, secretary and head clerk at the Hogarth Press from 1928 to 1936, and previously a file copy from the publisher's archive, with Belsher's ownership signature to front free endpaper and "FILE" written in purple ink and crossed out in pencil to title page.       Cosmopolitan Book Corporation, 1929. First Edition. Cloth & Boards. Near Fine/No Jacket as Issued. A handsome and scarce Limited Numbered First Edition signed by President Coolidge on the limitation page and numbered 252 of 1,000 Limited Edition copies. With dark blue cloth spine and marbled paper boards with gold titling. In near fine condition with very slight cocking and a scratch on the front cover but with attractive gold gilt on the top edge and the interior is bright and clean, and the pages are stiff and fresh. There is slight darkening on the inside hinge of the front endpapers as though there had been a small article there previously, and the untrimmed page edges are naturally tanned from age. Overall a very solid book with a fresh and clean signature and clean and clear photographs. A handsome book.

Mustard cloth, top edges stained purple. The volume has mild spine toning, 4 areas (1 on front; 3 on back) of light crinkling to covers(binding flaws) and overall light soiling. There is a bookplate on the front pastedown and three pages are dog-eared.       1929. First edition thus. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good set of Anthony Trollope's famed Barsetshire novels, being The Warden, Barchester Towers, Doctor Thorne, Framley Parsonage, The Small House at Allington, and The Last Chronicle of Barset, TOGETHER WITH Anthony Trollope's Autobiography, in fourteen volumes printed at the Shakespeare Head Press and Published for the Press by Basil Blackwell, Oxford and by Houghton Mifflin Company, Stratford-upon-Avon, 1929. The printing was limited to 525 copies, this copy being presented in the Publisher's original green cloth, with the top edge of the closed page block gilded and the front edge untrimmed. In Very Good condition, the volumes show modest rubbing to the spine ends and board corners, some age dulling to the spine lettering, and occasional marks to the spines and boards, and a notable prior seller's price of $1,000 to the front free endpaper of the first volume of Barchester Towers. Having an excellent Provenance, this set belonged to Wade Hampton Hayes and each volume has his bookplate to its pastedown. Wade Hampton Hayes served in the Spanish American War and under General Pershing in World War I. He served as a member of a New York City Militia and retired from his military career as a Brigadier General of the New York National Guard. A Financier, Hayes also served as the Sunday editor of the New York Tribune. He thereafter emigrated to England, where he co-founded British Electric and became the Commander of the American Division of the British Home Guard prior to the United States’ entrance into WW II. Joseph Kennedy, the American ambassador, attempted to remove his US citizenship but failed to do so. While keeping his US Citizenship Hayes was awarded an Order of the British Empire. A Very Good set of the most successful group of works from Anthony Trollope, one of the most successful, prolific, and respected English novelists of the Victorian era with an excellent Provenance. Boards a little marked, endpapers a trifle browned, but a very good copy in a very good, unclipped dustwrapper, browned at spine, chipping with slight loss to head of spine, and one or two very small closed tears. Photographic frontispiece of author by Albert Cracknell, seven illustrations through text. Illustrated dustwrapper by Len Lye. First edition, first issue, with the Sassoon poem on pp. 341-3 present. Viscount Esher's copy, with his bookplate. Sassoon's poem is missing from later copies; complaints and the threat of legal action from the poet resulted in its removal.

      Linards Laicens (Latvju Kultura, Riga 1929 - With photographic illustrations. First edition. Printed in 1300 copies. In publisher's, constructivist cover. Printed in orange and black. 47, (1) p. "Kreis? fronte" was the first substantial leftist Latvian-language journal with international aspirations. Its concept and format followed Vladimir Mayakovsky's magazine the "LEF" and the design of "Novy Lef". Only 17 issues were published between 1928 and 1930 (the last one was double), when it was banned by the authorities, and Laicens launched his new magazine the "Trib?ne". The content of "Kreis? fronte" was more cultural than political, contained avant-garde literary elements as well as photographic artwork. The editor, Linards (Petrovich) Laicens (1883-1938) was a Latvian Expressionist writer and poet, active in politics as a member of Communist party. He was the editor or the leftist Avant-garde journals "Kreis? Fronte" and "Trib?ne". [Fraser: pp. 125-126.]. Spine worn, chipped at edges. Stains on last leaves. Overall in good condition. Original blue cloth, gilt lettered spine, red morocco labels, gilt floral borders on sides, top edges gilt, text printed on green paper, edges untrimmed. Bookplate of M. O'Gorman Munkhouse to front pastedown. Some minor fading to cloth, internally fresh. An excellent copy. First published edition, first printing, one of 12 copies printed on green paper. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Inscribed for James A. Healy, in memory of that particular Irishman & our friend Richard Campbell. W. B. Yeats." The recipient, James Augustine Healy (1890-1975) was an Irish-American stockbroker, bibliophile, and patron of Irish writers, who had an extensive correspondence with Elizabeth C. Yeats and George Yeats, from whom he obtained all the Dun Emer and Cuala Press books. Judge Richard Campbell, to whom Yeats refers in the inscription, was an Irish-born American lawyer, who assisted in forming a syndicate of Americans to re-establish the Irish Statesman. This is number 72 of 642 copies signed by the author on the half-title; this particular copy is cited by Wade in the second edition of his bibliography. However, Wade is seemingly unaware of the bibliographical background of this edition: it was in fact initially intended for publication under Crosby Gaige's imprint. The aborted issue consisted of 712 copies, of which 12 were printed on green paper, and 650 were for sale. The project was taken over when Gaige sold the publishing house in December 1928 to his business partner James Wells, who changed the firm's name to Fountain Press. The edition was thus published under The Fountain Press imprint with a redesigned title page and colophon in a limited issue of 642 copies. The 12 copies on green paper were incorporated into the rest of the limitation, hence why, most unusually for a bibliographically distinct issue, they were numbered randomly in the sequence.

Shot by photographer Cliff Leary, with his stamp on the verso, as well as a numeric reference number (6434), and the stamp of a Scandanavian press agency (Københavnerinden). A huge hit for Paramount in 1929, a comforting fact for the studio given that it was released just after the Wall Street crash. The great Ernst Lubitsch's first talking film, the film debut of Jeanette MacDonald, the American debut of Maurice Chevalier. Too "The Love Parade" is considered by many to be the first musical film in which songs were integrated with story, and the first to make innovative first use of music with no image at the end of the film. Finally, a wonderful example of the kinds of magnificent physical artwork that would routinely go into major premieres at the beginning of the talking era. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Theodor Wiesengrund-Adorno zur Uraufführung aus \"Die Musik, XXII/6 März 1930\" Max Blonda (d.i. das Pseudonym von Gertrud Schönberg, geb. Kolisch (1898-1967) ////////// In den Jahren 1928 bis 1929 stellte Arnold Schönberg die Komposition seiner einaktigen Oper \"Von heute auf morgen\" op. 32 musikalisch fertig. Das wahrscheinlich früheste Manuskript des Librettos ist auf den 21. Oktober 1928 datiert und stammt von Arnold Schönberg selbst, der jedoch lediglich auf anderthalb Seiten das Thema für die Oper skizziert hatte. Auf dem Titelblatt wurde dann später der Name \"Max Blonda\" als Textautor vermerkt. Schönberg war offensichtlich davon überzeugt, daß die nunmehr ausgefeilte Zwölftonmethode flexibel genug sei, um in einer aktuellen komischen Oper Anwendung finden zu können. Für Schönberg stellte die Zwölftonmethode kompositorisch eine Art Schlüssel zur Zukunft dar, und in »Von heute auf morgen« versuchte er zu beweisen, dass dieser Schlüssel keinen Widerspruch zu populärem Erfolg darstellen musste. Die Aufführungen an der Frankfurter Oper und über Rundfunk im Jahr 1930 sollten den Komponisten jedoch enttäuschen. Seine Hoffnungen auf populären Erfolg sollten sich nicht bewahrheiten. Etwa zwei Monate nach der Uraufführung verfasste Schönberg den Essay »Mein Publikum«, in dem er argumentiert, die Sachverständigen - vor allem Dirigenten, Ausführende und andere im Musikleben einflußreiche Personen - seien für den Mangel an Verständnis seiner Musik verantwortlich zu machen. The opera was composed at the end of 1928 (finished on the first day of 1929), and was premiered in Frankfurt on 1 February 1930, with William Steinberg conducting Herbert Graf`s production.
