        L'École de Montmarte: a significant archive of documents

      A fantastic and scarce archive of original documents relating to the founding of the École de Montmartre in Paris in 1929, spearheaded by a small group of artists including Georges Joubin, Guy Dollian, Jean Frelezeau, Edouard Hofer, Henri Rioux, and Pierre Bonnard. Various sizes and formats. Loose sheets in a paper folder. Paris circa 1920-1930. The manifesto published by the founding artists of the École de Montmartre states its purpose as an "attempt to restore to the chosen quarters of Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, Utrillo, its true aspect. Grouped under the banner of the École de Montmartre....we believe to be able to realize a plan, not fed on abstractions, but with its very root sunk deep in life itself, a plan of flesh and blood, a living expression of our time..." Shunning quarrels between artistic groups, the copying of previous artists, and commercialism, they extolled honesty, human expression, emotion, exhibitions, lectures, and the formation of other groups of artists with similar ideals. Contents include: - Témoignages: Organe Mensuel de l'Ecole de Montmartre, nos. 1 (October 1930). 2 (November 1930), and 3 (December 1930), 2 copies of each of the first two issues, containing original signed engravings by André Foy, André Hofer, André Deslignières, and Marcel Gimond. - Two typed copies of the "Manifeste de l'École de Montmartre", dated 1929, 2 pp. each, one bearing the signatures of Jean Puy, André Hofer, Luigi Corbellini, and Pierre Dionisi, the other bearing the signatures of Georges Joubin, the founder of the École de Montmartre, and Charles Camoin. - "Buts de l'Association", 8 pp. typed, containing a list of the society's goals, beliefs, and objectives, bearing signatures of approximately 17 artists including Pierre Bonnard, Georges Joubin, André Hofer, André Foy, André Dignimont, Roland Oudot, and Jules Pascin. - Official "Récépissé de Déclaration d'Association" issued by the République Française, dated February 13, 1929, establishing the École de Montmartre as an official association. - Minutes from meetings of the École de Montmartre: December 16, 1928 (first meeting) through December 5, 1929, hand-written on a pad of paper. May 20 and June 17, 1930 are typed. - A group of approximately 19 handwritten letters and notes from affiliated artists regarding the manifesto and the École, including André Foy, Edouard Hofer, André Dignimont, Pere Créixams, Roland Oudot, Carlos Raymond, Charles Chamoin, and Pierre Bonnard. - A group of approximately 39 letters and notes and 11 calling cards from art critics, editors, writers, painters, and other figures in response to the manifesto, typed and hand-written, including Léon Lemonnier, Antonio Coen, Georges Valois, Octave Charpentier, Maurice Fréjacques, André Lebey, Pierre Vorin, Jules Adler, Raymond and Alfred Machard, Eugene L'Hoest, Claude Aveline, Louis Richard, Marc Chesneau, and Jacques Forconi. - A collection of approximately 47 contemporary newspaper clippings about the École de Montmartre and its artists, most from 1929, varying in length from short blurbs to longer articles, many with pen notations. - Two printed copies of the official manifesto, published by Maurice Lavergne, listing the authors as "Asselin, Pierre Bonnard, Corbellini, Creixams, Deslignières, Dignimont, Guy Dollian, Florias Tin, André Foy, Frelezeau, Hensel, André Hofer, Joubin, Pascin, Henri Rioux, Daniel Viau." One copy is accompanied by three sheets of ruled paper, written on five out of six sides, containing the names, addresses, and signatures of approximately 68 people who were interested in the movement and wanted to be kept apprised of future events. - A typed copy of the manifesto translated into English. - Three hand-written drafts of the manifesto. - Two posters, one in pieces, the other dated December 29, 1922.

Premier tirage des lithographies de Deluermoz, peintre animalier de talent, dont les compositions stylisées s'allient au sens aigu d'une observation réaliste ; Deluermoz, qui fut l'élève de Gustave Moreau, se situe dans le sillage de Toulouse-Lautrec, Valloton et Bonnard. Ce livre a été mis en oeuvre par Louis Jou et tiré sur ses presses avec son nouveau caractère romain bas-de-casse. Tiré à 130 exemplaires nominatifs sur vélin de Montval, celui-ci n°35 pour Emile Chouanard, fameux bibliophile qui l'a fait habiller par Madame et Mademoiselle Marot-Rodde, mère et fille unies dans une collaboration qui a donné des reliures très originales, comme ici, souvent dans l'esprit du livre, du caractère de l'auteur ou des affinités de l'illustrateur ; ici cette reliure a fait de cet exemplaire un des plus beaux connus. On ajoute le menu des Cent Bibliophiles pour la sortie du livre, relié à la fin, illustré d'une belle eau-forte à pleine page de P.L. Moreau. Très bel exemplaire.

The Spanish king sent this party to Mexico to establish an independent Inquisition of religious conversion in New Spain. In addition to their duties in the Inquisition, they became successful ranchers by exploiting their royal connections. In 1581, when his brother killed a man in a brawl, Antonio de Espejo received only nominal punishment and moved north to start a ranch at Santa Bárbara. From there, Espejo became involved in this expedition into New Mexico.Because of the loss of the friars and laity in the 1581-1582 Rodríguez Expedition (see AJ-004 to AJ-007), the local Franciscan friars at San Bartolomé sought to rescue Fray Rodríguez whom they believed was left behind at the New Mexico pueblos. Although it was likely known that Fray Jhoan de Santa Maria was killed on that expedition, Fray Bernaldino Beltrán of the Durango Monastery agreed to lead the campaign financed by Antonio de Espejo.Espejo Expedition of 1582-1583The expedition of twelve soldiers, Espejo, the friars, servants, 115 horses and mules, left San Bartolomé November 10, 1582. In addition to their mission to find if any friars remained alive, Espejo also hoped to investigate the mining prospects in the region. Espejo's account details several grass-hut rancherías of the Indians of the Conchos valley that subsisted by hunting rabbits, hares, and deer using bows and arrows, and by cultivating melons, gourds, maize, and the Maguey cactus used to make mescale. Espejo and Fray Beltrán proceeded to the Pazaguantes village, similar to the Conchos, living in grass-hut rancherías. They found silver ore while on the way to the Toboso villages, a tribe they befriended and for whom the Spaniards erected a cross for Christian worship.The expedition next encountered the Jumanos, whom the Spanish call the Patarabueyes. There were five Jumano pueblos, with permanent buildings and a population of nearly ten thousand. The nearby tributary of the Conchos River provided the Jumanos with water for gardening and habitat for fish. Espejo traveled north from the Jumanos to encounter a band of Indians converted to Christianity by Alonso Núñez Cabeza de Vaca or on the Coronado Expedition decades before (see AJ-070 to AJ-072, and AJ-086).Their travels continued from Texas into New Mexico and among the numerous pueblos along the Upper Rio Grande. In these pueblos lived tens of thousands of Indians raising turkeys, and growing maize, beans, gourds, melons, and peppers. The Spanish friars reported that the Indian religious shrines and grottoes reminded them of similar Roman Catholic religious shrines.Espejo continued north to the Tiguas provinces and the Pualas (Puruay) pueblo where Fray Francisco López, Fray Augustín Ruiz, and their four converts were killed the year before. This was the same province where the Pualas killed nine soldiers and forty horses during the Coronado Expedition in 1540-1542. Here the Espejo Expedition split up, in part because they feared that they would be attacked. Espejo and Beltrán took a small party to Maguas, a highly populated pueblo, where Fray Jhoan de Santa Maria was killed during the Rodríguez expedition.The party followed the Jemez River northwest to the province of the Emexes. There they visited Acoma, which is one of North America's oldest inhabited communities. Acoma is built on a rock rising nearly 350 feet above the plateau. Its cisterns catch rain to serve the large population, and cultivate gardens located on a nearby river. The Acoma presented Espejo with their snake and flute ceremonies, which he described as "many juggling feats, some very clever, with live snakes." While in Acoma, Espejo learned of Coronado's campaign there, and the Indians also told him that a lake of gold existed further west in Arizona.Following that lead, Espejo visited Mohoce in the Hopi region of Arizona, which other Indians warned them not to visit because the Spaniards might be killed. Espejo successfully convinced the Moqui they posed no threat and was welcomed with hundreds of woven cotton mantas, or blankets. Again, Indians told Espejo about the fabled lake of gold found further west. Although Espejo never found the lake of gold, he did extract silver ore from several regional locations that produced high-grade silver.Indian guides showed Espejo a shortcut passage back to the pueblos where he regrouped with the rest of his party. They returned to San Bartolomé, bringing with them one Mohoce (Hopi) woman and another Indian from the Tamos pueblo. Espejo's expedition is marked by his violent attacks on Indians at Puaray and Tiguex in which dozens of inhabitants were executed and their pueblos burned.Espejo arrived back at San Bartolomé on September 20, 1583, and later reported to both the Spanish viceroy and the king about his discovery of mines in Arizona and New Mexico. Espejo's expedition prompted interest in New Mexico among several Spanish adventurers in New Spain and led to the appointment of Juan de Oñate as governor of the New Mexico province fifteen years later.

      Hunnia Filmstúdió, Budapest 1929 - Presentation copy of an early draft script for the Hungarian film, released in Hungry in 1932 as "Tavaszi zàpor," in Frace in 1933 as "Marie, Legende Hongroise," and in the United States in 1935 as "Spring Shower." Housed in a (likely hand-sewn) floral cloth-covered portfolio, the script is INSCRIBED by the Hungarian-American feminist and radical socialist screenwriter Ilona Fülöp on the title page: "To Mac: / Because You still trust me! / Ilona / Christmas, 1929 / Hollywood, Cal." A unique and attractive item, and probably the only surviving copy of the script. The story of a poor girl driven out of her village when she becomes pregnant by her employer's wealthy fiancé, finding refuge working as a maid in a brothel. After her daughter is taken from her, however, she falls into alcoholism and dies. A maid in Heaven as she was on earth, she saves her daughter from befalling a similar fate by "emptying her mop bucket" on her daughter's head via a rain shower at a pivotal moment. A multinational production in which a Hungarian screenwriter and Hungarian director, both with experience in Hollywood, shot a film starring a French actress using frozen assets from a French producer that had been mandated for exclusively Hungarian use. Though not a box office success at the time, it is now regarded as one of the all-time great films originating from the country. In a 1919 article entitled "What is 'Revolution' Doing to Love?," screenwriter Fülöp describes herself as a socialist radical, as opposed to a revolutionary or a Bolshevik, and her desire to further equal rights for women strongly defines her as a modern-day feminist as well. "Spring Showers," with its women- and proletarian-friendly plot, thus comes as little surprise. Housed in floral cloth-covered portfolio titled wrappers. Illustrated throughout. Illustrations by Vasily Vatagin were made specially for this Ukrainian edition. Vasily Alekseevich Vatagin (1883-1969), Russian Soviet artist and sculptor who produced illustrations for around 50 books about animals. But 'The Jungle Book' is considered the main of his works: «Illustrations to the 'Mowgli' became my main achievment as I put all efforts into it, and for 40 years there were no such editions to compete with it». He went to India where he made hundreds of sketches. First version of illustrations was printed in 1922 in Russia and included around 120 drawings but for this Ukrainian edition he prepared new set of drawings. First Ukrainian translations were made in the beginning of the 20 th century, and in comparison with Russian translations many consider them more expressive. Also interesting how a paragraph about the priest in "Tiger! Tiger!" that was in the first English edition (1894) but was excluded by the author in all other printings was still translated by several early translators. This paragraph passed from one edition to another for almost a century. Our edition also has this paragraph. WorldCat locates no copies.

Browning to edges and small mark to margin of page 238 (not affecting text). Good-plus in torn and slightly chipped but mostly complete dust-wrapper with owner's name on front panel. Very scarce with dust-wrapper. "In addition to his brilliant success as foreign correspondent in Russia and as author of the Swallows & Amazons series of books for children, Arthur Ransome (1884-1967) produced two irresistible fishing books. The first of these, Rod and Line (1929), a collection of pieces originally written for The Guardian newspaper, is probably the most delightful fisherman's bedside book ever produced. Arthur Ransome shared with Harry Plunket Greene a most appealing sense of humour, as well as a passion for fishing and fishing history. But unlike the author of Where the Bright Waters Meet, Ransome was no chalkstream man; he was from the North, lived for years in the Lake District, and did most of his fishing on local rivers and tarns. He confessed to being no more than an average performer with the rod, content to creel pike or perch and the odd eel when nothing finer was available. His skill as a writer, however, was of the first rank. No one has bettered Ransome's wonderful descriptions of fishing days, nor evoked with such art the characters of old anglers, fly-tyers and companions. Quarter green morocco, marbled boards, a sweet little binding by Roger Powell. Two very scarce little pamphlets brought together by the master binder Roger Powell. Jones’s woodcut is of aspistras on the title-page; immediately followed by a haunting woodcut of a mother and daughter looking through a window with an aspidistra behind them which to date I have not been able to identify.
