Ulysse.

First edition in French, number 509 of 875 numbered copies, out of 1200 copies of this edition. Slocum and Cahoon D17. Spine skillfully repaired; tear in the lower front wrapper, without loss; some light foxing; very good copy, enclosed in a cloth clamshell box.. Large 8vo, original printed wrappers, untrimmed, 870 pages. The first French translation of Joyce's Ulysses, a complicated endeavor as indicated by the hierarchy delineated on the title-page. The poet and critic August Morel was the primary translator; he was assisted by the young (and later very important) Joyce scholar Gilbert Stuart; and their work was then reviewed by French poet and novelist Valary Larbaud (who had been the first choice as translator, but he was too busy) and Joyce himself. Joyce worked hard to balance the strengths of the collaborators and was on record as being pleased with the final result. The office of the publisher, Adrienne Monnier, was across the street from Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare & Company.

Autograph letter signed to G. M. Trevelyan.

Trinity College, Cambridge: 18 October 1929 - Single leaf, autograph letter on both sides. Small tear to left margin, a few very faint marks and a crease, very good condition. The poet and classicist A. E. Housman here sends the Cambridge historian G. M. Trevelyan (1876-1962) a parody he had written on Erasmus Darwin (not included here - beginning "See on the cliff fair Adjectiva stand", published in Poems, 1997). He had included the parody in a paper on Darwin which he read to the University College London Literary Society March 1899, and later at Eton in 1922. He excuses Trevelyan's ignorance thitherto of it, "Your ignorance must be shared by most of the world, excerpt privileged audiences at University College and Eton" since "I have always refused to let my parody be printed, because it is no rival to the Anti-Jacobin's, which is not merely amusing but subtle and profound." The Anti-Jacobin parody is George Canning's "The Loves of the Triangles" (published in The Anti-Jacobin Review, 1789), a parody of Erasmus Darwin's The Loves of the Plants (1789 - the second part of The Botanic Garden). He further notes "The simile" (presumably something in the parody) "obeys [Erasmus] Darwin's declared principle that similes ought not to be like". George Macaulay Trevelyan was once one of the most widely read historians in the world, and still respected, in the words of historian J. H. Plumb, as "the poet of English history" for his "skills of literary craftsmanship". He was a Fellow of Trinity College 1898-1903, and returned to Cambridge as Regius Professor of History 1927-43. It is early in this period that this piece of Housman correspondence appears. He later served as Master of Trinity 1940-51. Trevelyan later lectured on Housman's poetry. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Bristol: Printed for Douglas Cleverdon at the Fanfare Press,, 1929. With ten engravings on copper. Quarto. Original white cloth-backed grey-blue boards, titles to spine gilt, fore and bottom edges uncut. 10 copper engravings. Bottom corners bumped, faint fading around board edges, but an exceptional copy in excellent condition. First Jones edition, first impression, special unnumbered presentation copy inscribed by the printer Ernest Ingham, "for presentation to my Mother & Father, E. Ingham, The Fanfare Press, Aug 22, 1929" on the colophon, and again "To Father & Mother from Ernest 1929" on the front free endpaper. Ingham, in the same year as this book's production, also worked with Cleverdon to print Eric Gill's first collection, Engravings. Like David Jones Ingham had fought in the First World War. He became chairman of the Fanfare Press, and was awarded an OBE in 1952. This copy is also signed on the colophon, on the same date, by the publisher Douglas Cleverdon (1903-87), who produced numerous finely designed and printed books, of which this is one of the first. Cleverdon later became a prolific producer for BBC Radio, and worked again with David Jones in 1948 to produce, with Dylan Thomas and Richard Burton, the radio version of Jones's poem In Parenthesis (a newspaper clipping advertising which is laid in here). He also produced the first radio play of Under Milk Wood in 1954, again with Richard Burton. Laid in is an autograph letter signed from Cleverdon, dated 1984, to the book's later owner Raymond Lister (1919-2001 - artist, author and authority on William Blake and Samuel Palmer). In the letter Cleverdon congratulates Lister on his acquisition, and notes that "The printer was Ernest Ingham, a protegé of Stanley Morison (who designed the edition)." Also laid in is a contemporary manuscript copy (perhaps by Ingham's parents) of a 1930 review, in "The Studio" November 1930, in which Cleverdon's Coleridge edition is praised as "exquisitely printed and bound in delicate tones of grey and bluish green and... the special feature is that the illustrations are original copper engravings, a fashion which has been revised by the modern artist with success." It goes on to praise David Jones, who "has become known as a powerful craftsman on wood and metal with an imaginative and mystical style. The engravings to the Ancient Mariner will enhance his reputation... [This work is] worthy to bear comparison with the best of the copper plate illustrated books of the 17th and 18th century." An additional 70 copies were issued signed by David Jones with extra suites of illustrations. To have this scarce and esteemed private press book signed by printer and publisher (neither signature is called for in any of the limitations) is both appropriate and appealing, and is most likely unique.

LANCELOT 28º - 7º (GUIA INTEGRAL DE UNA ISLA ATLANTICA)

ALFA, Madrid 1929 - Materia: Libro del siglo XX. Poesía. Canarias. ilustración. Modernismo. Ultraísmo. Surrealismo. Publicación: Madrid, ALFA, 1929. Primera edición. Descripción física: Octavo (19 cm.) 127 páginas. Encuadernación en holandesa piel nueva. Conserva cubiertas originales. Spider Kin. Illustrations by Marian Brand.

Chicago: Robert Packard & Company, 1929 - Octavo. Specially bound green-cloth backed green spider-web patterned boards, titles to spine and front cover gilt. With the illustrated dust jacket. Light rubbing to spine ends and tips, an excellent copy in the jacket with chipping to spine and folds of flap ends, some missing, closed tear to head of rear panel, tape repair to verso. Frontispiece and 3 full page woodcuts, all with spider-web patterned glassine guards. First edition, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed by the author, "For Mr and Mrs Parker – a very meager recognition of all their kindness – Forman Brown" on the front free endpaper. The cloth issue with the illustrated jacket precedes the wrappered version, which was issued with a jacket retrospectively advertising this cloth issue and its "webbed boards". This is the first book of noted gay author Forman Brown, also remembered for writing, under the pseudonym Richard Meeker, the 1933 novel Better Angel, about a young man coming to terms with his homosexuality. It is seen as one of the first American novels to view being gay in a positive light. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1922 Brown began travelling in Europe and the United States with a group of strolling puppet players serving as puppeteer and playwright, eventually establishing the noted Turnabout Puppet Theatre in Los Angeles, which drew celebrity attention and support from Greta Garbo, Marie Dressler, Douglas Fairbanks, and even Albert Einstein.
